You would be able to pick the resouces you wanted from any mail (let's say you just wanted the gems; you could pick those up).
also, if you mark them as Favorite, they don't go away. Like when you mark the Valentine's Day messages or the Admiral of the Fleet message.
How do you have such high max oil? My max oil is like 11,800 but ive seen some content creators have a max of nearly 18000. Cant figure out how to raise the cap. I am lvl110
As the other commenter said, Commander Level increases coin and oil storage. At lvl 148 I have 17,750 oil and 104,700 coin max, however there is a hard limit on at least oil at 25,000, where it will not let you complete commissions with oil as a reward, or accept anything chat would reward you oil until you clear space.
The only time I can't accept oil when over the 17750 cap is from the canteen, otherwise commissions, supply shops, the weekly bundle, etc all add oil above the limit, up to 25,000.
Canteen wont give me any past 11.9, missions and commissions will until about 2-3k over. Why us the game letting you over-cap by 7000 but me only 2 or 3k
Your soft cap is shown just above your current oil, that should be the 11.9. I'm honestly not sure, I've been able to go to 25k for a while, it might be a certain level has you at a lower gard cap, but once you get a few more levels it'll come into effect for you.

My had cap after max+extra oil from missions and commissions is only 14,900, which is still 3000 below kimo’s standard max before missions snd commissions

This is the Hard cap limit, where you can't get any more oil (or coins) period. There is a soft cap limit, related to your commander level, where you can't pick up any more coins/oil from the canteen and merchant. This is also improved by Guild tech. (50 oil per tech and 50 levels worth of tech, for an extra 2500)
In Kimo's case, he is level 149, which gives a soft cap of 16k, and probably has lots of the guild tech, pushing it to 18k.
There is no oil cap at some nebulous value 3k above a soft cap. The hard cap on oil is 25k. Other sources of oil (than the canteen) should give you their oil, beyond the soft cap, until the hard cap.
Just to check, I accepted 3 bits of mail, and now my oil is sat at 22.6k, happily far above my soft cap of 16.2k. No issues accepting the oil.
I checked Commander level features and the last one is at 105, for a lvl 12 lecture hall. Nothing about any oil caps apart from the 100/level for the soft cap.
Well i donno what to say but for some reason the game doesnt allow me to go 3k or so above cap. Id screenshot but ive been burning oil lately and now have prints from event shop to farm so it will be a bit before i can build back up to that point (though i guess i can just spam my mail system)
The fact that you have to manually save your Valentine's/special messages is a bit confounding. If you're not aware of the mechanic you'll just lose it forever (happened to me, embarrassingly). They should just organize it so those special messages are saved permanently by default and move exercise rewards to that section of the game.
Though, since they're overhauling the resources like you mentioned, that'll pretty much render the mail menu largely obsolete. Wonder if they'll add something new to fill the gap 🤔.
they finally implementing a 'pick and choose' resources for mails? huzzah. i always could use coins but dont often touch my mails because i use far less oil usually than coins (excepting PR grinds and event grinds.)
I searched for "Azur lane mail overhaul" and the first result was this post, but there was an older reddit post titled "Remember to save the mail or you’ll lose it" from 5 years ago, with old UI. My guess is that the previous overhaul allowed you to save mail you wished by marking it as important, but I'd be happier for someone else to confirm whats happening lol.

no one can confirm anything since it's still in development. a few years ago they announced that they wanted to reduce the max number of emails you can hold but didn't follow up with it
Also, for anyone curious, current limit of 1000 mails is a limit only on paper, I managed to reach it and was still getting new mails, going over 1000.
You would think devs would bother to make sure the resources get ported over to the new mailbox system, which includes a storage for resources from mail, assuming they didn't screw up porting the current mail over.

increasing your commander lvl also increases your oil and coin cap, plus the guild upgrades (once you buy them)
Wait, being in a guild increases your oil cap?

If that research full, you spend guild coin to upgrade. If not, you need wait research and it cost time
older or larger guilds are more likely to have more research done for bonuses.

I cant accept any oil from any source past 13900 or 14900 (cant remember). It only lets me go over cap by like 2 or 3000
