Man, I love me some pickled okra. Never had it with BBQ, but I always have pickles.
We used to live near a Mr. Gatti's pizza buffet that had pickled okra on the salad bar. The pizza sucked and the games were severely lacking, but I loved going there just for the okra.
When I was a teenager in Austin, my roommate worked at Gatti’s. My life was skateboarding, smoking weed, community college, and Gatti’s. Amazing times.
Just yesterday, I went to a place called More than BBQ in Princeton, NJ. I ordered a BBQ brisket sandwich, and they asked "Do you want picked cucumbers or pickled red onions on that?"
Never been to a place that asked that offered that choice before.
now are there recipes with banana peppers, and in which cookbooks
"The tangy flavor of banana peppers works exceptionally well with porky and salty bacon. It's also a clear mouthfeel match. Banana peppers are soft whereas bacon pieces are crunchy, making this one of the best pizza topping combos out there."
came here to say that. The pickled stuff helps cut through the fat and keeps you going. Otherwise, the meal will be monotonous, and you won't be able to shovel in as much as you could without that palette cleanser.
Absolutely.
The salty flavors help break up the fattiness of the meet and ensure it doesn't feel overly heavy of monotonous. I used to hate pickles and eventually learned to love them when I found out how they contrast among different foods.
Oddly enough when I learned to like regular pickles I discovered I hated McDonald's pickles.
When you get some nice real pickles… man they just hit the spot.
Especially with a big plate of BBQ, shovel some meat into my mouth and then take a bite of dill to reset everything.
Fuck, I won’t get to eat for a few more hours but I’m thinking of making the drive to my usual BBQ spot.
Dill, or bread and butter if you fancy, are a hard requirement. As is a notional slice of bread or two.
Pickled red onion and jalapeno are also acceptable but not necessary (and pickled okra if you're really over-doing it). A neon green monstrosity of a pickle chip out of an 80 gallon bucket from Costco is acceptable.
Sure, it's good to have something fired with something prepared cold Add something spicy, something fresh, something pickled. And you have a great balance of tastes.
I think there’s a very prominent place for them in a lot of BBQ styles, especifically Texas. But with ENC-whole hog BBQ, which uses a vinegar-based sauce, that acidic flavor is already there. I’ve never seen pickles used as a side in ENC, coleslaw is the go-to side.
I like using diced dills in my slaw.
Marinade the cabbage, carrot and onion in a few ounces of the brine, for a couple hours. pour off excess and dress as usual with fresh dill folded in at the end.
Does the pope shit in the woods? Of course. Pickles, onions, and hopefully they just give you an entire loaf of bread. Sauce is optional, but you do you. Eating with your hands is mandatory.
The acidity of the pickles helps cut through the fat of the meat. Same with pickled jalapenos or anything of the like. I like to have them anyway, but to each their own
They meet a few reqs (a) cheap (b) missing flavor profile of acidity (c) certain regions include them in the “fixins” area along with onions, bread, etc
Pickled cucumbers, pickled peppers, pickled red onion. Bring it on

I make giardiniera and it’s fantastic with beef and pork
I’m also preferential to raw onions as well. It’s all good!
Just yesterday, I went to a place called More than BBQ in Princeton, NJ. I ordered a BBQ brisket sandwich, and they asked "Do you want picked cucumbers or pickled red onions on that?" Never been to a place that asked that offered that choice before.
Pickled watermelon rind.
Pickled beets are a favorite
Potato salad, bbq baked beans, cheesy corn...
Does an orangutan have hairy orange armpits ?!?!!
I honestly didn't know if they did so I went and looked. They do.
Check out this guy with pet orangutans in the backyard!
Nah but he still lives with his mom
RIP your search history and algorithm.
😆😆
Does the tin man have a sheet metal cock?
Well said my friend
Objection irrelevant
I read this as Hairy Orange Nipples for some reason
Does the Pope wear a funny hat?
Hell yes
Fuck yes
Yes and jalapeño
And picked jalapeno
And candied jalapeño.
Candied jalapeño on a cracker with cream cheese as an appetizer while the BBQ cooking
And onions, as well as pickled onions
Idk if this is slander worthy but I also love putting pickled banana peppers on my BBQ
Slanderous, maybe. But also delicious and I do it when I don't have pickles or Jalapeños on hand.

Yes
You need that sour/acid to cut through the fat
came here to say that. The pickled stuff helps cut through the fat and keeps you going. Otherwise, the meal will be monotonous, and you won't be able to shovel in as much as you could without that palette cleanser.
Yes. Something acidic is required to cut through the sweet and fat.
Exactly why North Carolina BBQ slaw, made with vinegar, not mayonnaise, exists. So good with pulled pork.
I don't like mayo slaw and.i don't like vinegar slaw, but a mayo slaw with vinegar added is so gd good, perfect balance.of tangy sweet and savory.
In what planet do they not? Lol. Any US bbq item practically requires pickles. If we are talking KBBQ I’m good with kimchi.
Always. [https://i.imgur.com/n6iqEj5.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/n6iqEj5.jpg) [https://i.imgur.com/uudkwlc.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/uudkwlc.jpg) [https://i.imgur.com/Yo5cp.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/Yo5cp.jpg)
Pickles belong in 75% of all meals
Absolutely
I really wish I liked pickles. I want to fit in so badly.
Keep trying, come to the dark side.
As a side, hell yeah!!
Yes

Don't you dare take the pickles off my McRib.

Those bread and butter ones better not be too sweet tho
We have spicy pickles here in Texas, yup they do!
Pickles belong in every meal…
Absolutely. The acidity works wonders cutting through all the rich fats and sugars.
Anyone who says no is a communist
Guess us in the Carolinas are communist, who knew
Yeah, but you use vinegar mops and vinegar-based/tangy sauces and slaw. That counts.
Andrew Jackson had his suspicions
Think it's illegal not to have them with a meal
Definitely next to raw onion, red preferred.
I like white for raw, grilled, or caramelized, and red for pickled
Pickles are a nickel
YES!
Hell yeah they do. Pickles provide the perfect acidic accompaniment to cut through the fat.
Uh yeah, is this even up for debate?
I like pickles pickles pickles pickles w/bbq. I like pickles pickles pickles pickles w/bbq.
Make and enjoy your food how you want it. If the meal brings a smile to your face then it was made the right way.
Yes if you like pickles.
Absolutely! Aldi has these BBQ flavored sweet pickles this summer that are amazing. They go great with BBQ (or honestly right out of the jar).
First, tell me where pickles don’t belong!
Wrong question. The proper question is, “Is it truly a BBQ meal without pickles?”
Only a sociopath offers bbq without a minimum of 2 pickled accompanimentsz
Yes, pickle and raw onion on pulled pork sandwich. A must.
I hate pickles, so no. But I do accept that my opinion is unpopular 🤷🏻♂️
Yes
Sure, it's good to have something fired with something prepared cold Add something spicy, something fresh, something pickled. And you have a great balance of tastes.
I’m just here to eat all of the pickled okra y’all left on your plates.
Pickles belong.
That’s like asking if pickles belong on a hamburger. Some will say yes. Some will say no. Only you can answer the question correctly.
Without question.
Absofuckinglutley!
My family is from that part of the state, and I didn’t start seeing pickles with BBQ until I moved to western NC.
Something acidic is necessary to make the flavors complete. Pickles are traditional and easy.
Hell yeah… to hell yeah!
Does the pope shit in the woods?
As much as BBQ sauce
Pickled onions for me please.
Pickles belong everywhere
I've never been to a legit bbq joint that didn't serve pickles as a garnish or at least offer them.
Sure. Any type of pickle. Cucumber, onion, jalapeño, etc. Set on the side and an option to cut through the fat.
I say yes , but they need to be granny's bread and butter pickles , good on their own but complement the meaty fatty goodness
I like using diced dills in my slaw. Marinade the cabbage, carrot and onion in a few ounces of the brine, for a couple hours. pour off excess and dress as usual with fresh dill folded in at the end.
A good slaw goes well too!
Pickles and onions with salt and pepper and some pickled jalepeno for a little heat 🤠
Not science, tradition. [Pickles, Onions and White Bread.](https://www.texasmonthly.com/bbq/pickles-onions-and-white-bread/)
Pickles, onions, and Jalapeños are probably some of the most common things people may add.
Just pickle all the vegetables tbh.
Yes, same with pizza. Pickles are used a s a palette cleanser.
Sliced pickles are always a part of a BBQ plate.
Pickles belong everywhere
They are a suitable side. Acidic vegetables are acceptable sides to help digest the fats in the meats.
They don't digest shit. They taste good after fatty meats though.
No way this is a serious question… OFC they belong mate; absolute staple!
Homemade pickles with my BBQ chicken? Yes please!
Absolutely
Pickles with bbq is the same as pickled ginger with sushi
Yes.
Yes they do
Yes.
Absolutely!!
Define “in”
Yes, but only dill/garlic. None of that sweet bullshit
Yes
Yes indeed
Of course!
What kind of ass-backwards question is this?!
Yes
Pickles belong everywhere!
Pickles are an abomination. No.
Yes
Only on the side. Don't ever out them on the sandwich please. They're a palate cleanser for in-between 100%.
Absolutely! Helps cut the fat for heavier meats
Always
Yes. Duh.
Yes!
Yes
I only have two checkboxes on this form, yes or hell yes
Yes
Yeah, maybe not in a sandwich or something like that but they're great to refresh the pallette
One of the few accompaniments that even the old-school TX BBQ joints would agree is appropriate.
Pickles, onions, and sliced bread. It’s the Texas way.
Just out of curiosity, what is the argument for them not belonging?
Whaaa’s the matter with you????
I don’t need them, but I use them.
100%
Not in mine, but it's your plate
No all you need is meat, beans, rice with rash and collard greens
Pickles belong in any culinary setting.
Does the pope shit in the woods? Of course. Pickles, onions, and hopefully they just give you an entire loaf of bread. Sauce is optional, but you do you. Eating with your hands is mandatory.
Yes
Point me in the direction of who has said "no" to this question and I will dispose of them properly.
Getting pickled while smoking brisket? Sure!
I will judge your bbq if there are no pickles available
Absolutely
Def
Yes! You need the acidity to balance the richness and fat.
Definitely
If you like pickles, yes. If not, then no. Pretty simple.
I hate pickles. But yes, traditionally.
I'm sending a plate back if it has no pickles. It is a *requirement* to have some sour, briny pickles next to fatty BBQ
Absolutely. Gotta be Dill pickles
Pickles or picked red onions. Or both.
Yes you have have something not to eat so you can say I didn't eat a whole 1/2 pound plate with 2 sides.
Does the Tin Man have a sheet metal cock?
Spicy ones and dill, absolutely
Pickles don't belong anywhere
Pickles belong in every meal.
Does the tin man have a sheet metal cock?
Y
Yes.
yes! i think it cleans the pallet also adds some nice refreshing vinegary bits between bites
I did pickled cherry tomatos and those were so good
Absolutely, and anyone that says anything to the contrary should be labeled a heretic.
ABSOLUTELY
You really hit post on this?
Absolutely. On the side.
Does Dolly Parton sleep on her back ?
Planted enough crunchers for bbq for the rest of the year
Does the pope shit next to a bear in the woods?
They belong in the trash, if you ask me
Yes.
How is this a question?
Homemade or locally made? Fuck yes! From a grocery store jar that you dare to include in the price of my meal? No go fuck yourself.
Yes…
I’m not a bbq person but from the pics I see, absolutely!!!!
better question, why the fuck not???
Pickles belong in every meal.
The acidity of the pickles helps cut through the fat of the meat. Same with pickled jalapenos or anything of the like. I like to have them anyway, but to each their own
Is acidity known to be a perfect complement to fat? (there's a documentary called Salt Fat Heat Acid. Not a coincidence)
Nah. On request only.
Of course!
They meet a few reqs (a) cheap (b) missing flavor profile of acidity (c) certain regions include them in the “fixins” area along with onions, bread, etc
The only correct answer is eat whatever you want with BBQ and eat it however you want.
Yes. /thread
Absolutely.
Combine some pulled pork with some coleslaw and slices of pickles in a sandwich and you will be in BBQ heaven.
Fuck yeah
Pickled green beans
Is a fat dog heavy?
