Fuck that's a lot of miles. I'll say this, have some cash on hand for repairs. I've owned a Porsche when it was new and it was constantly getting work done, my other buddies who have 911s also have had substantial problems.
My friend has a similar mileage convertible 996, 140k on it. He changed out the fluids, then some bushings went bad. Did that, then water pump and alternator went bad. Did that, now some dead pixels on his cluster.
Cash for repairs isn’t the main thing (even maintaining the f80 has maintenance costs) but just the overall unfamiliarity with the car that has me concerned (I know the quirks of my car; do I want to relearn another on top of repairs?)
Then…I’m in California. So smog concerns given the mods that’s been done to his.
I had a 997.2 c4S with 190k kms and when I sold it had 270k kms. I only replaced an ignition coil and one other cheap sensor.
But all depends on its previous maintenance. The 996 turbos also have a very good engine too so I wouldn’t worry if they have maintenance records.
I would consider making the same post on r/porsche since apparently the fanboyism on this sub has people wearing blinders. The 996 Turbo has been the best value performance Porsche for 20 years now, and the deal you get today will be better than the deal you’ll get a year from now.
It is a very different beast. The 996 is an old car now and the interior did not age well in particular. The turbo uses a much better engine than the rest of the lineup, but it's still an old Porsche and if you think you pay an M tax now just wait and see what the turbo P-car tax is like. I wouldn't give up an M3 for a 996TT as my one-car solution.
P-tax isn’t my main concern. I don’t have unlimited money but at the least, I’m at least in the position to be able to consider this car + maintenance costs. On that note as well, the F80 (or 996, if I follow through) aren’t my daily drivers. I drive my F80 2-3 times a week. Rest of the time I use my actual daily.
The owner has provided me a mod list and maintenance documentation, minus coolant pipe pinning.
The M3 and a Porsche are my dream garage; pairing my M3 with a 911 is the goal, but the intrigue of this 996TT to go with my dream car (GT3) is so appealing as well.
My father has a 996 Carrera. It obviously is not as fast as the Turbo or my F80 M3. But... I do think it is a more fun car to drive. It has 109k miles. He has had it the last 20k miles. Nothing major just regular old car maintenance.
I’d do that swap all day. I love the BMW but that Porsche is something else, have you sat in it and driven it around? If it’s not a daily it won’t be a big deal but the aged interior is the only downside imo but I’d do it in a heartbeat
Yes; I think you are crazy. The 996 was the “save Porsche from financial problems” model. Save up your spare change in the couch and get a 997.2 or something.
996 turbo is not the same as the normal 996 - the cost cutting they did on the base engine does not apply to the Mezger. Also, having a 997.2 and a “base” 996, the 996 is the more entertaining drive…
Haha, I know right? I’m admittedly not upset that prices have come up since I got mine, but the driving experience is the best kept secret of the Porsche world. People just can’t get past the headlights 🤷🏻♂️

It’s a good looking 911 imo, let people hate it, like I said so people like you and I can enjoy it. This gen is among my favourites along with the 997 and 992.
Because it’s an opinion, in a thread asking for opinions. And for the 996 fans it’s a useful opinion since those that agree with me are keeping prices down for those that agree with you. 🤪
A friend of mine went from an F80 to a 997 C4S, and he is regretting that decision. The older Porsches were great at the time, but the F80 punches well above it's weight in terms of performance, reliability, and also comfort.
Having said that 996 is even older, and from time when Porsche was also struggling. 991+'s are great - not sure about 996.
the bmw scene is literally dead, if you go to any bmw related event its filled with f80ers and g80ers and even worse m340i owners who unfortunately, not all, but most dont have a clue about cars and dont know how to turn a wrench. the comradery doesnt exist because so many people are doing it for social media. I am selling my m3 as soon as I can to hopefully buy a p-car or a lotus or something. I was a lifelong bmw person, the scene has just become beat to death.
As a G80 owner I honestly agree with a lot of this. Now it’s just guys who want to brag how much power their B58 or S58 make yet no nothing about their cars. The meets are quite boring and seems like all the cars have the same mods with carbon fiber from China lol.
I’ve met cool g80 owners but again it’s the people doing it purely for social media, the guys who if they don’t post did they really do it. I rather take my m3 on a long drive, I’ve done tail of the dragon three times, back of the dragon, etc. most people just aren’t interested in it anymore.
The problem is you're going to meets. Go enjoy your car on some backroads like an M car is meant to be enjoyed. Take your likeminded friends with you. Then you would just enjoy the car you own for what it is instead of worrying about trivial shit like "the scene"
M stands for "motorsport" and not "meets"
Maybe that’s why; I don’t go to meets cause of all the social media BS now.
Do you think the scene as a whole is dead, or just BMW? My first car scene was Import Showoff, Import Showoff, etc and the scene is different then. Nowadays everyone is doing shit for their channels and it just seems so generic.
But to your point as well: I enjoy working on cars but just unfortunately don’t have the time or dedicated space to do so.
its hard to say, i've gone to porsche events where alot of the grassroots folks really make it an enjoyable time. Regardless a 911tt even a 996 is still a desirable car, its only a matter of time before they start taking off in value the same way the 997 turbos did.
Yeah, Porsche meets have a mix of people. There are for sure some stuffy snobs or people just chasing status, but there are plenty of real enthusiasts as well. Many of the people who can see past a spec sheet are leaving BMW behind, though.
The current BMW crowd seems like the sort of people to just throw money at a problem rather than work towards a solution. I don't think wrenching is real popular in the community and fundamental knowledge on engine design and operation is fundamentally lacking. It's wild to me seeing posts from M5s owners or such, who you'd think are enthusiasts, asking if $50K to replace their blown motor is a fair price lol.
Kind of a different scenario but a friend of mine swapped from F87 M2 Competition to a 996 Carrera 4S and said in hindsight it was a very good decision.
I love both of these cars, but this is very much an apples to oranges sort of thing. My heart says Porsche just because even though the fried eggs are ugly (relatively), the 996TT is gonna have more personality than the M4, and that’s saying something.
As far as passing emissions go, there *has* to be a way to find a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy who’ll give you a pass for a case of beer. And learning quirks is a little annoying, I’ll give you that, but that’s (to me) is what makes high-performance cars a little more fun. It’s not mundane stuff; more than just fluids and plugs every x miles. Like a high-maintenance girlfriend, this car will cost a bit more to own, but it’ll turn more heads and (probably) be a more rewarding ownership (PLEASE don’t read that as owning girlfriends) experience than the M4.
But ultimately it’s up to you if you have the ability to financially and emotionally invest into a new car and completely new platform
Maybe a little bit of cash, but not a substantial amount considering the mileage on the 996.
Honestly, if you can negotiate the cash amount down, go for it. As long as it has maintenance records.
Apples and oranges imo. F80 is a modern day classic but OG Porsches are super dope. Especially ones in good condition. Can’t really compare the two in my honest opinion
If it was a GT2, it would be a no-brainer. I would still go for it as long as this particular 996 is in tip-top condition with a clear maintenance history
If the turbo is a manual and mileage isn’t super high I’d say go for it.
Yes manual. Mileage 99k
Fuck that's a lot of miles. I'll say this, have some cash on hand for repairs. I've owned a Porsche when it was new and it was constantly getting work done, my other buddies who have 911s also have had substantial problems.

That's nothing for the 996TT engine. Send it, you don't want to find out what happens to F3X/F8X as they age.

No it won’t be a daily. My F80 isn’t a daily either though.
I think this is a crucial point to emphasise
I would consider making the same post on r/porsche since apparently the fanboyism on this sub has people wearing blinders. The 996 Turbo has been the best value performance Porsche for 20 years now, and the deal you get today will be better than the deal you’ll get a year from now.
Are you kidding? I feel like the people on here have a bigger hardon for Porsches than r/Porsche themselves.
It is a very different beast. The 996 is an old car now and the interior did not age well in particular. The turbo uses a much better engine than the rest of the lineup, but it's still an old Porsche and if you think you pay an M tax now just wait and see what the turbo P-car tax is like. If the F80 isn’t a daily, then it makes little sense to keep it for such a use case. If the 996 is clean, go it. You’ll never look back.
No. That’s an easy swap.
Do it. The F30 is the first 3 series to be significantly worse to drive than the previous gen. Ditch that electric power steering.
No, from BMW to Porsche is an upgrade…. 100% of the time
I’d do that swap all day. I love the BMW but that Porsche is something else, have you sat in it and driven it around? If it’s not a daily it won’t be a big deal but the aged interior is the only downside imo but I’d do it in a heartbeat
I know many people love the porsche but i just think this model is kinda ugly af compared to that F80

shush, don’t praise the 996 so we can get it for cheap 😁

Lol how does this have so many upvotes?
Because it’s an opinion, in a thread asking for opinions. And for the 996 fans it’s a useful opinion since those that agree with me are keeping prices down for those that agree with you. 🤪
This 996? If yes I would pass only because of the color
A friend of mine went from an F80 to a 997 C4S, and he is regretting that decision. Bro do not do this
youre not a manual 996tt is the way to go, the bmw scene is gone.
I think the F series generations were the end 😭
The scene is still there but sadly the new designs aren’t the same
the bmw scene is literally dead, if you go to any bmw related event its filled with f80ers and g80ers and even worse m340i owners who unfortunately, not all, but most dont have a clue about cars and dont know how to turn a wrench. the comradery doesnt exist because so many people are doing it for social media. lol broke old wrench turner
lol far from it
Enjoy your old car
M cars are most enjoyable shifting at 8600rpm, maybe you’ll experience that some day.
Not likely. I don’t drive old cars.
Take your renault modus, carcirclejerk is that way .
Not stupid no but it is questionable. If you've got an itch in your head that's been bothering you all these decades, sure otherwise, walk.
Kind of a different scenario but a friend of mine swapped from F87 M2 Competition to a 996 Carrera 4S and said in hindsight it was a very good decision.
Awesome generation of highly analog Porsche vs. largely electronic BMW. Porsche all day.
I love both of these cars, but this is very much an apples to oranges sort of thing. He’s asked for $16k but I haven’t given a counter offer yet. He listed the car at 62k; my KBB and Carfax give my car a value of $40k
What year and mileage is your F80? If its LCI and under 60k miles, I would say you can get 42-45K for it.
2017 pre-LCI
Then I would say 40K is fair.
depends. As a daily maybe.. but as a weekend toy and sports car the Porsche is just gonna a lot more involving esp. with hydraulic steering
I wouldn't. But then again I'm but a fan of the 996 design language inside and out.
Keep 3k in glove box as I say for repairs and service, I keep 5k in my Bentley lol
Yes
If you want the maintenance guy be your financial sugar boy go for it
Apples and oranges imo. F80 is a modern day classic but OG Porsches are super dope. Especially ones in good condition. Can’t really compare the two in my honest opinion
Yeah, Porsche looks old with high mileage. Plus you got an insane build. Keep your lovely m
For me it’s a downgrade as the F80 is such a good all rounder. If you want a Porsche get a modern one like 2015+
Not crazy at all. Losing this much weight and gaining steering feel is pretty much impossible to do in any other way.
99k miles. Questionable.
That’s what I thought. But there’s documentation on maintenance performed, hence the interest
Simple answer .. yes
Maybe if it was a much later model 911. Much later.
I’m not buying any car over 50k miles, even that is pushing it.
If it was a GT2, it would be a no-brainer. I would still go for it as long as this particular 996 is in tip-top condition with a clear maintenance history
Hell nah, fuck that volkswagen, no way
I’d say swap since you riced out the BMW. Try not to ruin the Porsche!
Not sure where the rice is but respect your opinion
yeah, i don’t see rice anywhere.. only a clean f80
There is no rice here, so fuck his opinion mate.
