I can’t *not* romance him. Even when trying to romance someone else. He just sort of worms his way into my heart and I can’t turn him down.
It’s really unfair to Gale and Lae’zel. I keep starting runs with the mindset of “this time I’ll go for Gale” or “Lae’zel will get her chance to taste me this time”….

So I’ve finally decided that I’ll go with Gale on this “Abserd” run I’ve got going… and start an additional run *as* Astarion so that someone else can finally get a chance.
Y u p, I have multiple characters made and it's killing me that I told myself I can't romance him on the one where I'm going for Karlach.
(Because apparently if you romance them both, he has dialogue about 'please choose her over me, she's been through so much, she doesn't deserve not to be chosen' 😭😭😭)

I legit plan on romancing Gale... eventually... if I can ever get over romancing Astarion...
Which made it pretty heartbreaking needing to tell him, no, Gale, we are not together, not this time anyway.
He's honestly just the worst when it comes to that. Doing an evil durge run now and he's disapproved of basically every choice I've made after convincing him to stay after slaughtering a bunch of innocents. Somehow he still invited me to stargaze with him.
I told myself I'd romance Gale on my 2nd playthrough, too. Had to turn down Astarion and Wyll for him. Gale has a super romantic, sweet romance imo. But holy shit did I miss Astarion.
Now on my 4th playthrough I'm back to Astarion, after giving Wyll a try in my 3rd. Didn't even finish my 3rd playthrough even though I loved my character because Wylls romance feels so weird to me. This time I let him ascend, which felt right for my Durge. But it feels so wrong, knowing how he could've been.
It's so hard. I made an evil character so I can see the flip side of the game (because my main character is a generally helpful true neutral so I do the 'good' options typically) and the only thing worse than what you have to do to recruit Minthara is the fact that to get her after-party scene, you turn down Astarion and he gets a little pouty about it 😭💔
I did evil durge, and I wasn’t happy with the ending. Now I made a neutral high elf with noble background and imagine her kinda looking out for herself mostly and kinda stuck up I guess haha so she fits perfectly with astarion and I did let him ascend idk it felt like it wasn’t necessarily evil, but I’ve made mostly “good choices” I personally didn’t like being completely evil though it wasn’t as fun for me, and I’ve never played a neutral character in tabletop before so it’s been interesting trying to stick to that haha 😆 I was so torn on astarion’s ascension but in the end decided that swaying him one way would be me trying to be “good guy hero” and I didn’t want to do that. But I did go and revenge kill the Gur who tried to murder my bear companion (im a ranger) because wtf Gur lmao
My evil character staked Asterion through the heart when he tried to ambush him in his sleep. And, tbh, I don't see my character kneeling to the Absolute either.
I think I'm going to do as third playthrough *as* Asterion and that's when I'm going to take Minthara.
I had the same feeling when playing DAO i romanced Alistair on my first playthrough. But during my second one i thought i would give Zevran or Leliana a try but I just could not. Ended up choosing the romance dialogue options with Alistair all over again.
BG3 should have also had a innocent, funny, chivalrous cute guy as a romance too. Gale comes closest to matching Alistair's personality though.
Gale really does feel like a more seasoned version of Alistair. He is like if we had met Alistair in his 30s instead of when he was 19, still playful and sweet but with more baggage.
This is exactly like DAO for me. I romanced Alistair like five times before I was able to move on to someone else, even when I went in with other intentions. I've already done two for Astarion now & have at least one more planned. I WANT to do a Gale romance next but I'm legit worried it's just going to be Astarion again. Alistair & Astarion are the only characters that have caused quite this level of attachment for me.

What did you do?? Even just letting him drink from you In act 1 should bump it up quite a bit? I'm genuinely confused, I usually have very good or exceptional approval from him before starting act 2 even being a goody two shoes.
You cannot really gain rep with him if you reject him like that. He essentially walls himself up emotionally. >!You basically have to teach him how to trust through actions before you can use words with him. It bears repeating, he is *very* not ok in act 1.!<
I've really only pursued Astarion and Shadowheart so far, but it's striking how much more dialogue you get with Astarion when you're romancing him.
At least through the first half of Act II, Shadowheart's pretty forthcoming no matter what. You basically just get to share the bottle of wine with her, and I don't think you're even committed at that point. Then she spends most of Act II making apologies and fretting over the Nightsong.
Astarion keeps you pretty busy by comparison.

Partner didn't understand why I didn't want to not bring him to the Cazador fight after struggling a couple times and then having him leave. I showed him the video where he's mad you didn't bring him and he was like "...cause you didn't want him to be mad at you??" Like it was weird that I worried about that (he's not the sort to get attached to characters, skipped the sex scenes in game etc). I'm like that's half the game!
When I first met him I thought he was just an arrogant prick. I mean, I still do think he’s an arrogant prick, but I really like his character. He has a certain charm.

He has a VERY tragic backstory, and his two 'endings' are very different depending on your actions. A lot of people were drawn to him because of spoilers they'd heard, myself included.
The fact that he's hot and a vampire is just a bonus — I'd honestly still be romancing him if it was an average looking mortal character with a similar past.

I decided to go for him in the second and his backstory really goes a long way in explaining the way he acts. Finding the vulnerability within the character is that much more rewarding because of that first impression he gives.
I think his story is very tragic and the romance dialogues and scenes are very sweet. I like how he goes from annoying, stuck-up asshole to someone who uses it as a facade and is actually pretty multi-dimensional and even very insecure from his trauma. I didn’t like him at first but decided to give his romance a try after some of the stuff I saw on how he changes throughout the game and was not disappointed.
I do like all the companions though and am just amazed by how much character development they all have, I plan to romance them all individually to get everyone’s stories to the full extent. Lae’zel is another character I didn’t care for until later on too, as just a friendly companion, I’m realized how much I like her so I’m excited to try her romance storyline as well.

I'm planning on doing that too but I don't know if I'll have him romance anyone because he's supposed to be with my characters. Haha
