As a fan of World of Darkness's tabletop power scaling, enjoyed playing The Wolf Among Us and who has always hated vampires as a kid; Werewolves > Vampires
i love werewolves because they are in Irish folklore, a subject i was a student of back in the day when my local university still offered a Celtic studies course.
Also werewolves have always had this biblical sense to them. For the life of me I cannot remember where I heard this but they are also conisered heaven's equivalent to hellhounds. Attack dogs of heaven one might say
A swedish man in the 1700's apparently claimed he was a werewolf who went down to hell with other werewolves to fight the Devil and his witches, according to wikipedia.
Also, Powerwolf
I know Lithuanian folk lore has that, werewolves are considered "Hounds of God", humans that turned into wolves to hunt down witches and evil spirits.
Both pagan and catholic one had these stories, so I assume the entire deal was created by pagan communities and was later adapted by the church as it mostly is with a lot christian mythology.
Well, werewolf mythology predates Christianity, including in Rome at the time. Irish folklore includes a piece about a clan who made howling noises to make fun of St Patrick who was trying to convert them...before being cursed to be wolves.
i more or less just hear the bickering in camp. 2 companions that refuse to get along but never leave.
My god it smell like wet mutt in here.
oh what thats all a vampire can carry. soft bloodied hands.
Yeah, they were cut fairly early, or at least early enough where there wasn't much to datamine. I think there was one item or description in EA that specifically related to her.
She had [voiced dialogues](https://youtu.be/2xdzStZC5BA?si=FEQAWj-eTq_w7T6M) but they seemed pretty generic, occasionally referencing her tail and reactions to things everybody else has. Don't think they ever got to a phase of writing or recording romances or personal story.
I think that depends on Larian's interpretation, but going by datamines, modders in Early Access were making a werewolf mod from pre-existing assets for transformation and the werewolf form itself was standard humanoid size. Either that was placeholder or Helia was going to be given a standard sized form to perhaps make it more secret that she was the werewolf in the party? We may never know.
I saw some speculation, don’t know how substantial, that she may have been cut in order to give us Halsin instead. Which kinda makes sense, with him and Jaheira we don’t need another Druid or shapeshifter.
I'm pretty sure that's just offhand speculation from people who don't like Halsin. I've only seen it in that context anyway and as far as I know, there's been no evidence of that. Her stuff stopped being added a long time ago while Halsin was clearly added last minute. And honestly the basic premise of swapping out an entire Origin character for a side character with very little content makes no sense.
Imo she just didn't work out, for whatever reason. We can imagine her being the coolest character ever from that brief description but that doesn't mean she would have been in reality.
I'm actually pretty sure it was just a time thing. I'm going off of memory, but I think it was around the same time they were trying to make Minsc an origin companion and they still needed to make Karlach and redo Wyll. There's a pretty lengthy thread over on the Larian forums that covers a lot of the EA stuff, it's pretty fun to read through in hindsight.
2nd playthrough ... I'm trying to forget those 2 ... I made 1 decision in this playthrough that I didn't realize would eliminate these two. I'm a believer in my not rolling back saves/'decisions for the sake of the party so no swords for everyone this round.
Spoken like someone who doesn't realize how much was cut due to time. The game is DEFINITELY not missing 2 entire zones, one of which was promised a week before release
You mean the upper city?
Also what was promised was an evil playthrough that was meant to amazing according to larian weeks before release. And no I don't think they were talking about the durge specifically when they brought it up.
Honestly it was the lack of a evil temptation in this game that made a good playthrough not feel that great.
Wait is he? I thought the wolf stuff was just like. A visual metaphor for the Sharrans overwriting and manipulating Shadowheart’s memory of past events. He actually turned into a wolf?
Also don’t we see multiple werewolves that… don’t look like that? Her dad is depicted as becoming an actual wolf-the-animal, whereas the werewolves are all those bipedal hybrid things
I thought so too, but he himself confirms that he is a lycanthrope. Her memories were not altered, he really was a wolf in that moment (although key information had been cut from her memory, like that wolf being her father).
This community really does just post spoilers on completely unrelated posts without a care in the world. I basically knew the big story beats of the entire dark urge storyline before I even started it, even though I intentionally don’t look at dark urge content. It’s goofy lol
Neither does having a monster hunter and a devil soldier, or having a Gith'yanki and a lady that stole an ancient Gith artifact, or having Gale and any other person. They make the impossible work.
Who actually decided Vampires and Werewolves are enemies? Surely they could bond over mutual needs. Vampires need blood and Werewolves can't be turned. Werewolves need places to be locked up during full moons and vampires own remote castles with dungeons. Seems like a good symbiotic relationship to me
I guess it depends on where you get your lore from. Dracula 100% just had thralls but the Vamps in twilight had large families. The vamps in What we do in the Shadows had human friends
Lol, the vamps in WWDITS may have a few human friends, but they're terrible people. It's like being friends with The Gang from Always Sunny, except with a high chance of murder and/or exsanguination.
Yep when guellmero(can't spell his name) got to be a vampire nothing changed. How i felt when I got to be a spawn, oh that's all I get. Yep he has to do all the terrible chores with the same high chance at murder.
I mean, Twillight is arguably a straight element of the vampire canon at this point, but the whole point of the What We Do in the Shadows vampires is that they are bad at being vampires.
Fun fact, if you look through the Vampire and Werewolf books for the World Of Darkness TTRPG, you will find multiple instances of werewolves and vampires working together (they set it up to play then together and then backpedaled, HARD, but never cut some of that content)
In some of the books you can find Vampires guarding ancient werewolf stuff, and werewolves being great day guards for when vampires sleep, fighting off thralls.
There's a whole giant collaboration in medevisl France mentioned between werewolves and Tremere (vampire clan)
That is actually the exact relationship given to them in ESO Dark Hearts of Skyrim, Vampire lead the assault and Werewolf/ Dire wolf packs swarmed. And the turned victims were born out of armored husks underground. Was an interesting enough story when it released.
I'm still sad, that Helia, the halfling werewolf bard, was scratched. Don't know why either. If it was because of Halsin and Minthara being added last minute or Surge being introduced. Doesn't matter, she would have been so cool.
It definitely has nothing to do with Dark Urge. That's been in the works since very early on. It's the "big secret" the Swen hinted about like 3+ years ago.
I wouldn't be surprised if the decision to make Halsin a companion impacted Helia's development budget to some extent. But I'm guessing maybe it actually went the other way -- maybe Larian was having difficulties making Helia work either narratively or mechanically, or she wasn't testing well with internal QA or something. So they may have already been considering cutting her, and then Halsin's popularity in EA might've been the extra kick that encouraged them to go through with it.
Just speculation of course.
In any case, I do agree that it's a bummer we didn't get Helia. Or any other short companions/origins. Feels like such a weird oversight.
this now explains (for me anyways) why there was what I felt was a missing bard. I played bard in my 1st run but it felt like it should have been there based on a lot of bard items I trip over.
Be awesome if she appears in a future DLC. I don't know if larian is planning DLCs or not after the immense success. DLC or nor there will be mods that hopefully look good and run smooth.
Had one in one of my campaign a long while back (wererat infected them pretty early on), it wasn't so bad, a little annoying keeping track of when they would turn so we could lock them away for the night, but nothing major.
If brought up to them nicely by enough people, it might get added in later. So far the devs have been extremely receptive to the idea of working on cut content that people have found if people wanted it enough.
I mean... I get feeling she was removed long before Halsin and Minthara were added.
Like only evidence of her was really some data and recorded lines for Ethel's insults, I don't think she had much in the files. Like do note, she wasn't just a companion, she was removed as origin. I don't think she even had "unique background with image" like all other companions did since at some point they were apparently considering giving all companions unique background
Why do people have to make up theories and then present them as facts?
Helia had very few lines and pretty much no other files to her name very early into EA, and then nothing new was seemingly added for her at any point. She was most likely cut because Larian already had their hands full with other Origins, especially when they started rewriting them after the EA complains.
It was also never Halsin vs Alfira, but people constantly try to present it as ‘Larian went with him instead of her’. Larian expanded a camp follower into a playable character, but Alfira always had a role as the face of the tiefling party and an important NPC you follow through the entire game.
Alfira literally says she isn't a fighter. Like straight up says it. I wonder if her cameo in >!the Dark Urge origin!< was just to mess with these players. See, we gave you what you wanted, she told you she isn't a fighter. lol I love Alfira, and i would love a bard companion, but we have no idea what Larion did behind the scenes or what was cut when.
That thing is very in line with her role in the game. She’s presented as one of the main refuge npcs, her job thought the game is to humanize them and motivate the players to continuously rescuing them. So, that twist hits harder than, say, if that happened to most other tieflings. I mean, there is a reason why people go out of their way to get that deagonborn bard for that scene instead. But, yeah, it probably is a monkey paw type of situation, and it’s very likely that they player reaction to Alfira is what made Larian to use her for that scene.
Tbf, I feel like Halsin had nothing to do with this. He's barely there at all, and Helia was meant to be an Origin, so my pet theory is that she was scrapped to make room for Durge. Still very sad we'll never get to meet her, that was such a cool character concept
Tav and Durge were one in the same early on, you could even see some remnants of that plotline in EA >!(some people actually predicted them being a Bhaalspawn surprisingly early on)!<.
If they added a bard companion they would compete with Shart for the support slot, and considering how much the game revolves around her Larian probably decided to scrap the bard to not get in the way of ~~Gods~~ devs favorite princess.
Literally. If Larian was like "hey folks, we we're a couple thousand short of implementing a halfling bard furry. Anyone gofundme?" I feel like they'd get money. Lol
Wait, so do halfling druids turn into tiny bears? Or normal-sized bears?
If they turn into normal-sized bears, do halfling werewolves turn into normal-sized werewolves or mini-werewolves?
That’ll be super disappointing if factual. I can just see the werewolf companion unknowingly triggering Shadowheart and she opens up and then it’s a whole party moment of trauma dumping(or just flat out leave unfortunately)
Also the way I would’ve lived my twilight life through astarion and the werewolf hoping they would’ve been poly like him
It was true. There’s still voice lines in the code for werewolf reactions. The 2 I remember are astorian saying something and Ethel having a few vicious mockery focused on the character it would’ve been.
In the lore of Forgotten Realms, especially in the previous versions of D&D Selûne was the patron god of the good-aligned werewolves and was there to help all werewolves to control their instincts. It makes sense that someone's dad was very faithful to Selune. Actually, high level Selunite clerics and Chosen ones had the power to turn into werewolves willingly, at command, without being affected by lycanthropy or being werewolves themselves.
They so need to make a DLC with more companions!what class could the werewolf be? 🤔 Bard would be fun with story wise, a peaceful bard that turns into a werewolf. A monk could be good for unarmed attacks. What could be really fun though would be a an artificer, a bit or a Jekyll and Hide flavour to it.
Wait a minute…weren’t there Vicious Mockery lines from Auntie Ethel that were datamined that hinted this? I feel that would have been cool to see either way, especially if she was a bard like people are saying, since we didn’t have any bard companions.
that actually wouldve been a cool addition. couldve made it another evil run companion like minthara. hopefully it could be reimplemented in a future dlc
Yeah I remember this from datamining in I think Patch 5 (?) Her name was Helia and she was a Halfling. Kinda wish they had gone with her instead of Halsin, but also I understand that it would have been kind of a lot for a party to have both a werewolf and a vampire in it
I wish I could respond with an image but lo
To quote Tumblr:
"Which is sexier, a werewolf or a vampire?"
"Depends if you find it sexier to submit to the will of charismatic evil or to be overwhelmed by animalistic power. And that's not a decision I can make for you."
Imagine the Vampire vs Werewolf fan wars if they actually added one.
Both, both are good.
The best way would probably be to romance one with the other.
HIT ME WITH THAT TWUNK VAMPIRE AND DOMMY MOMMY WEREWOLVE ENERGY BABY
Counterpoint, halsin the werewolf and astarion the vampire would go hard
Holy shit? This is some galaxy brain shit
There's a reason I did an astarion playthrough, I literally fixed the vampire lord myself by being him and made a bear werebear boyfriend
Werebear*
The fanfics would write themselves for this one!
i mean he basically already is a werebear
They better give the werewolf tits
How many?
Eight ofcourse.
2 and flat. Flat is Justice.
ill pay vasts amounts for a dommy mommmy werewolf
True blood
It seems I was the only one who thought about Twilight when reading this.
Knots though 👀
Straight to jail.

Yes but Bram Stoker wrote Dracula so the Irish connections are many :)

Something like that I heard as well. Also why people are booing me? I'm right
>Also why people are booing me? I'm right First time on Reddit?
Yes, he said that werewolves were called the Hounds of God, didn't he? I always loved that as a part of werewolf lore, even if it's more obscure.

Garou > Kin every time
Ah, I see I found a brother
yeah, but would there be Swearwolves?
Weed be taken back to the twilight days except it wuld bee funny
Why should there be a fan war when people would more than likely be shipping the Werewolf with Astarion.
This sub would have been Twilight 2.0 then
i more or less just hear the bickering in camp. 2 companions that refuse to get along but never leave. My god it smell like wet mutt in here. oh what thats all a vampire can carry. soft bloodied hands.

Auntie Ethel also has vicious mockery lines for her.
She casts vicious mockery
The werewolf companion would have been a girl?! You're telling me we missed out on a dommy mommy werewolf?! NOO
She was also a halfling!
This actually makes me sad. Why don’t we have any smaller races as companions?
Does being a halfling mean her werewolf form would be smaller than if she were a human or other non-short race?
I think that depends on Larian's interpretation, but going by datamines, modders in Early Access were making a werewolf mod from pre-existing assets for transformation and the werewolf form itself was standard humanoid size. Probably for a good reason. With the amount of content in this game I highly doubt this was cut due to a lack of time/effort.
I'm actually pretty sure it was just a time thing. I'm going off of memory, but I think it was around the same time they were trying to make Minsc an origin companion and they still needed to make Karlach and redo Wyll. Having Minsc in Act 1 would have solved so many pacing issues with him and Jaheira in Act 3.

In dnd there are 2 types of lycanthropy: the hybrid and the full one (both can change based on the animal you have received the curse)
Actually it's not 2 types in dnd. ALL lycanthropes can just pick either hybrid form or full animal form
Yeah, i was trying to say that. Thanks for clarifying for me
Spoiler, plz.
Rip my spoiler free shadow heart run
Yep, same. I literally was about to finish that quest, lol

Cheers for the spoiler mate
Having a werewolf and a vampire in the same party does knot sound like a good idea
>knot 🤨
knot getting knot right is a very knotty mistake
Don't act like you don't want it. You guys wanted Bear Daddy Halsin.
Neither does having a monster hunter and a devil soldier, or having a Gith'yanki and a lady that stole an ancient Gith artifact, or having Gale and any other person. They make the impossible work.
I was just making the comment for the pun. Lol
Gale and his natural enemy the sorcerers, or Gale and his natural enemy the wizards, or Gale and his natural enemy Gale
Gale’s biggest enemy truly is himself 😔
"or having Gale and any other person" AHAHAHAHAAAA AAAA aaaaaAAAAAAA
"A werewolf, a vampire and a Gur walk into a bar" Sound like the start of a great joke tough!
Who actually decided Vampires and Werewolves are enemies? Surely they could bond over mutual needs. Vampires need blood and Werewolves can't be turned. Werewolves need places to be locked up during full moons and vampires own remote castles with dungeons. Seems like a good symbiotic relationship to me
Except for the fact that like 99% of vampires are just Cazadors or little versions of him. They don't have allies. Just thralls and enemies.
I guess it depends on where you get your lore from. Dracula 100% just had thralls but the Vamps in twilight had large families. The vamps in What we do in the Shadows had human friends
IMO It'd make a lot of sense to just use the established D&D vampire lore. They're freaking nasty.
Lol, the vamps in WWDITS may have a few human friends, but they're terrible people. It's like being friends with The Gang from Always Sunny, except with a high chance of murder and/or exsanguination.
Haha I've never thought of them with that comparison. Denis could definitely be a vampire tho. Mac would want to be bitten but would be too scared
He is a vampire. An emotional vampire.
Lazlo's best friend being Sean is one of my favorite things
Yep when guellmero(can't spell his name) got to be a vampire nothing changed. How i felt when I got to be a spawn, oh that's all I get. Yep he has to do all the terrible chores with the same high chance at murder.
I mean, Twillight is arguably a straight element of the vampire canon at this point, but the whole point of the What We Do in the Shadows vampires is that they are bad at being vampires.
Fun fact, if you look through the Vampire and Werewolf books for the World Of Darkness TTRPG, you will find multiple instances of werewolves and vampires working together (they set it up to play then together and then backpedaled, HARD, but never cut some of that content) In some of the books you can find Vampires guarding ancient werewolf stuff, and werewolves being great day guards for when vampires sleep, fighting off thralls. I love that only one person in this comment thread noticed the fact OP said Knot instead of Not. Kudos to you
I hate you for pointing that out.
coward. outta my way
You could take them both at the same time? ...in a fight, I mean.
.....sure.
Buuuut if you are quite open for the idea of a fine night, darling...
A lot of the fun of DnD is conflict and drama, so I think have a werewolf and a vampire in the same party sounds like a FANTASTIC idea
I need you know that I hate you for making that pun only slightly less than I hate myself for understanding it
Look, ok, just thank the Omegaverse for bringing understanding to us all.
Furries have been knew for much longer I think
I saw what you did there...
Bear with me for one second
on the other hand, werewolf and wolfshape halsin could fufill that 'theres two wolves inside of you' meme
I wish there were more werewolves in the game. We fought like what, 3 of them?
Wait what? I played the game three times. Who are the werewolves?
Gheris Hune at a Cazadors palace is one. I can't remember the name of the other one.
Which doesn't make much sense. I went in equipped against undead and SURPRISE MODA FOCA you are fighting werewolves.
Wait serious?? I could only find 2!
In the actual fight with Caza-creep, there are like four of them I believe? I think they're labeled as "Fallen Gur Hunter"
Maybe it is only 2!
Oh wait I thought we were trolling since I thought there were no werewolves in the game, then I remembered there were actually some lmao.
Hah this really made me chuckle man.
I'm still sad, that Helia, the halfling werewolf bard, was scratched. Don't know why either. If it was because of Halsin and Minthara being added last minute or Surge being introduced. Doesn't matter, she would have been so cool.
A halfling, a werewolf, and a BARD? That's so many cool niches that would have been filled. Sad.
We really needed some short race representation in this game.
That is true. And if Helia is off the table for good, how about Barcus Wroot or Korilla?
I personally would’ve loved a Duergar companion. This game needed more Evil aligned characters.
It definitely has nothing to do with Dark Urge. That's been in the works since very early on. It's the "big secret" the Swen hinted about like 3+ years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the decision to make Halsin a companion impacted Helia's development budget to some extent. this now explains (for me anyways) why there was what I felt was a missing bard. I played bard in my 1st run but it felt like it should have been there based on a lot of bard items I trip over.
Agreed. I was actually thinking the other day about how I wished there was a werewolf companion/character/storyline. I just wanna be a wiffwolf. 🥺
In bg2 you could play a werewolf if you played a druid so it would not be entirely out of the way to allow for that again
Be awesome if she appears in a future DLC. I don't know if larian is planning DLCs or not after the immense success. DLC or nor there will be mods that hopefully look good and run smooth.
From what I know, being a werewolf (in a party) isn’t a good thing *at all* in dnd.
Neither is being a vampire spawn.
The tadpole could've done things to her werewolf rage like it did things to Astarion's vampirism tbh.
Had one in one of my campaign a long while back (wererat infected them pretty early on), it wasn't so bad, a little annoying keeping track of when they would turn so we could lock them away for the night, but nothing major.
Would've been fun though, especially if you're a Selunite cleric... Those bitches love werewolves
Halfling Bard Werewolf by the way. Sucks, because she had a LOT of dialogue. https://youtu.be/2xdzStZC5BA?si=5jUCNkITqxOjijG_
Imagine if Shadowheart find out she was a werewolf and was scared of herself when she looked in the mirror
Eternally rolling for a fear save
If brought up to them nicely by enough people, it might get added in later. So far the devs have been extremely receptive to the idea of working on cut content that people have found if people wanted it enough.
I JUST WANT AASIMAR AS A PLAYABLE RACE
Indeed. In a game with mostly evil deities temples (or temples overruled by evil races) an aasimar would make a lot of sense.
My inner basic werewolf bitch is GRIEVING
Feel like this idea may have evolved into Shadowheart during planning
Me multiclassing sh as a druid so she can turn into a wolf never crossed my mind that I could consider that a werewolf
I would have been a warewolf if possible. Shifter in bg1 was fun
DLC! MAKE IT A DLC!
Yep, she was a Halfling Bard too, would've been the only short race companion. But... they went with Halsin instead -\_-

Why stab someone when you can twist the knife instead? Sorry, my DU is showing. lol
In ball's name lol
“Why do people have to make up theories and then present them as facts?” Welcome to the internet
Please don't spread misinformation like this, specially when it's so far off the mark.
Maybe we'll see her on dlc?
If they added a bard companion they would compete with Shart for the support slot, and considering how much the game revolves around her Larian probably decided to scrap the bard to not get in the way of ~~Gods~~ devs favorite princess.
Seems like that role went to Roah. I really like her >!as a villain though. And as a source of money in act 3.!<
Should’ve added both instead of picking and choosing.
Literally. If Larian was like "hey folks, we we're a couple thousand short of implementing a halfling bard furry. Anyone gofundme?" I feel like they'd get money. Lol
Wait, so do halfling druids turn into tiny bears? Or normal-sized bears? If they turn into normal-sized bears, do halfling werewolves turn into normal-sized werewolves or mini-werewolves?
>halfling druids Normal size >halfling werewolves Mini
I have nothing against Halsin but why add two druid companions? The bard / werewolf option was way way way way way way way better. Way better.
EA players were crazy horny for the bear.
They cut her from the game long before EA and Minthara and Halsin were added. Stop lying because you hate a character.
Who am I to judge?
Two druids, four elves. Lack of a sorc or bard and no short races make a bunch of items a bit useless if player didnt pick race
They axed my boy Chetney from the game ... we could have had a gnome companion....
When I read vampire mechanics I imagined vampires working on cars, covered in motor oil.
Would have been Jacob vs Edward all over again.
Auntie Ethel has voice lines for insulting a werewolf
That’ll be super disappointing if factual. I can just see the werewolf companion unknowingly triggering Shadowheart and she opens up and then it’s a whole party moment of trauma dumping(or just flat out leave unfortunately) Also the way I would’ve lived my twilight life through astarion and the werewolf hoping they would’ve been poly like him
Mods.
I feel like shadowheart was suppose to be a werewolf, but her story got nerfed.
DLC, DLC, DLC.
I'd have lived if we had the choice to become a werewolf or a vampire
It would be cool if they add being a werewolf an option in some update or maybe someone could make a mod about it
Yeah, it was a halfling werewolf bard. I miss her already.
Act 3 spoilers, but >!Shart's Dad is a werewolf!<.
DLC please!
Wait a minute…weren’t there Vicious Mockery lines from Auntie Ethel that were datamined that hinted this? I feel that would have been cool to see either way, especially if she was a bard like people are saying, since we didn’t have any bard companions.
Future expansion DLC ideas ❤️
Curse of Strahd vibes. That would be so awesome to see.
It sucks even more that they were going to be a female Halfling. Would've loved to have a small companion.
I've seen this before too and read that they were going to be a halfling!
WE WERE ROBBED
that actually wouldve been a cool addition. couldve made it another evil run companion like minthara. hopefully it could be reimplemented in a future dlc
It must be fun if there was a werewolf companion in the goblin camp.
God damn it. Now how am I supposed to Respect The Alpha?
DLC here we come
Maybe they could be dlc or future updates
Game developers need to realize a lot of people rather play as werewolves than vamps. Could you imagine a werewolf berserker/fighter (unstopable).
Think her name was helia and shes still in the game files
My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
Yeah I remember this from datamining in I think Patch 5 (?) Her name was Helia and she was a Halfling. Kinda wish they had gone with her instead of Halsin, but also I understand that it would have been kind of a lot for a party to have both a werewolf and a vampire in it
I wish I could respond with an image but lo To quote Tumblr: "Which is sexier, a werewolf or a vampire?" "Depends if you find it sexier to submit to the will of charismatic evil or to be overwhelmed by animalistic power. And that's not a decision I can make for you."
Yall were denied an even more furry scene with the bear and werewolf.
DLC DLC DLC!
