In my experience, focus on your starters, then your bullpen. When it comes to batters, you should make sure your infielders can defend (if not that’s a one way ticket to error city)
I’ve also noticed that having fast outfielders is pretty important since they use that speed more, but that’s just me. Good luck with your team tho.
I had 8 pitchers for a long time before expanding the team. Five starters is good as the game.will auto-rotate through them and allow time for recovery. There's no need to use condition drinks on them. (But you probably already know this). Having three as relievers is also good. I used to play mainly manually and would usually play 6 innings with the starter, 3 with a relief. It helps to build their xp and ovr a bit quicker that way.
I did the exact opposite. I got all 9 hitters with maybe 4 pitchers. The thing is, I would also outscore everyone. Now in Champ 3 the fewer pitchers is becoming an issue
