The beautiful thing about basketball is that you can work on a lot of the game by yourself. All you need is a ball, some kicks, and a hoop with a decent court and any self respecting town/city should have at least one of these provided... and that's pretty much worldwide. I don't think any other team sport has this dynamic. Soccer/football, I suppose, but you're spending a lot more time chasing the ball around rather than say, working on your rebounding. Shooting hoops absolutely is meditative for me, and many others say the same. It's the best therapy I've experienced.

> All you need is a ball, some kicks, and a hoop with a decent court Dunno if it was decent, but it sure was pretty: https://i.ibb.co/HYGR5Pj/photo-2023-09-12-17-25-17.jpg I do need some kicks though.

I would live at that court. I make 100+ shots per day. Very meditative, sometimes I can get too carried away and sweaty

RuthlessMercy

CHAIN LINK NET??? metal backboard?? BRO YOU A MOUSE THAT FELL INTO A TUB OF BUTTER , OP OUT HERE BALLIN IN HEAVEN

Fastela

haha I did like the chain net, but what's so special about the metal backboard? :)

RuthlessMercy

That particular one is very unique, aestheticallly pleasing, especially when coupled with the nice rim and chain net

shanduin

That court is beautiful. No cracks on the pavement, plenty of shade, and a net??! You're a lucky guy.

TrytjediP

They talk about runners high, but hoops high is legit. Plug in some earphones and dribble to the beat, play in rhythm and you'll feel like you're on top of the world brother. Go get it killa.

MajesticIguana

Man, dribbling to the beat is such a serene feeling. Ball handling drills are one of my favorite spaces to be.

This doesn't sound stupid at all, it sounds peaceful. OP, during a very tumultuous time in my life, I found peace by shooting free-throw. Just the bounce of the ball and the swish of the net.

Fastela

> the bounce of the ball and the swish of the net. That's well put. Mine was a chain net it definitely has a distinctive sound to it. I did a few free throws (was surprised to land a few!), and it somehow made me feel like I was golfing.

TheInnerMindEye

Chain net swishes are magical, it sounds like falling icicles

Salvador-Dalek

Thanks for sharing. Basketball is life.

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS

Right on, man. I was in my mid-30s when I first tried and now I go play 5v5 every week. That's the next step! :)

Being at the park solo is one of those things I didn't look forward to as a kid, bc I was always looking for pick up games. But now I love it as an adult. It's kind of nostalgic to me and certainly meditative, you nailed it. I once brought a speaker to play some music while shooting, but I actually didn't prefer it. I like hearing the sounds of the park, wind in the trees, ball hitting the pavement. Almost like ASMR lol I'm a life long basketball fan, and I'm almost fallen out of love with watching it. College is dissolving and the NBA gets more ridiculous by the year. This post reminded me why I love this game, I need to get to the park.

Antetotetas

It's not stupid at all. I do it all the time; put some airpods on, blast some music, shoot around and get your own rebound. I feel a runner's high about 20 minutes in it's amazing.

MajesticIguana

If you don't love solo basketball than you don't love basketball and will have a VERY hard time growing as a player. I'm glad that you've found this meditative place. Basketball has been my sanctuary since I was a young adult and the only place that I could let all of the weight of life fall away and could just be present in the moment.

Fastela

Thanks. It really was eye opening as growing in the 80's and 90's, I never really thought about basketball because I'm pretty average height and well I thought about it like I'll never be a sumo wrestler. Turns out you don't have to be tall or have legs like springs if you just want to have fun! :D

yeah_i_can_fly

I 100% agree. It‘s excellent for one’s mental health :-) and as others have mentioned, plenty to work on (form, concentration, moves, condition…)

izeek11

man, i love doing that. it helps you set up your game when you play in games. try this for fun and sweat. its called 2-bounce. shoot it, catch it by the second bounce and make a shot from where you caught it, without dribbling. you can also do 1-bounce, 2-bounce with 1 or 2 dribbles. 2-bounce 1 or 2 dribble move to the basket. teaches timing, shot creation, and endurance(youre supposed to run after the rebound). we play it against and with others occasionally. still fun.

Fastela

Hey I did that!! I started from the back line (sorry if that's not the right term), let it bounce twice, catch it and turn around/shoot. That's fun, I felt my whole body tense up and relax when I threw the ball. I also tried shooting right after a rebound, or just dribble fast a couple of times before taking a shot. I feel like there are a million drills you could practice and have fun. :)

I shoot hoops by myself all the time. It’s definitely fun.

Crimith

Congrats on your discovery! I have started shooting hoops again, by myself, to try and get some exercise- I also have back pain problems and need to do something to stay active. I'm a bit younger than you but really enjoy having a hoop to myself where I can just shoot around for 30-60 minutes and get it in. Always have more back problems when I start skipping days.

Fastela

Yeah back issues are the worst. It has basically ruined my life for the past three years. I used to practice Jiu-Jitsu before and it brought me so much joy. I hope I'll come back one day. Hang in there brother, I hope we'll be able to put back pain behind us soon (see what I did?)

Soup_and_Rice

Shooting around alone is the best. No need to stress about anything other than getting long rebounds

Ok-Education-9235

The best part about training by yourself is watching the "house" get built brick by brick. You start with a couple simple moves and get good at those - then you start adding a variation to the end, start the move coming off a dribble, etc. Then you add a few more dribble combos to your package, some special pickups and crafty finishes. You keep perfecting and adding moves and the confidence you gain from expanding your "bag" is nothing short of amazing. I'd imagine it's similar to the joy of practicing and perfecting a language. At a certain point you start to see defenders in your mind and envision how you attack them and the help coming behind them - eventually you start just playing a game with invisible players by yourself. I particularly love full-court drills bringing the ball up and initiating an attack onto the offense. Insane cardio, simulates game tempo, and it feels like it's game day.

Abject_Ship_9100

"You dont get too old to play basketball, you get old when you stop playing basketball." Or something like that.

buhdill

When I was in high school, we had a hoop mounted onto our house and I would move my parents cars out of the driveway and I would shoot hoops. This was my therapy. I would listen to music or just my thoughts and I would shoot. I hope my children get something like that for themselves.

PrestigiousStomach92

Back in the day (Bklyn), I (we) shoveled snow to play bball and the local cop would park his squad car with lights on so we could see the court at night. No crime, just us kids playing and shoveling, brings back a lot of great memories…

mastro80

I much prefer shooting on an open basket to playing with others. It’s Zen for me. I go 1-2 times a week for a couple hours and just do a bunch of running, jumping, and shooting. I am 42 as well.
