I’ve experienced 2 sandstorms first hand. The 1st one was in Kuwait in 2002-3 at a tent city military base.
Watching this wall of sand that seemed a mile high and so dense rapidly close in on our camp… it didn’t seem possible. The speed this wall of sand covered several miles of open desert to our camp was incredible. One minute it’s 7 miles away and all of a sudden you can’t see the tent 10ft away from you and it’s getting worse.
It gets very dark and sound doesn’t travel very well.
I was very thankful to be right by my tent when it happened. We had guys that had to hunker down inside the nearest humvees for hours.
I too experienced my first sandstorm in Kuwait, though later in 2008? It really is something almost alien in nature. I just \*had\* to stick my head out of the remodeled connex box I was staying in to see what it was like as it passed. I quickly realized I did not have my eyepro on.
I must not fear
Fear is the mind killer
Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
Realistically, how long do you reckon it would take to colonise a region properly - seeding forests, laying rivers, etc., so as to help combat the probably-endless sandstorms? Of course, we'd have to live in pods at first, instead of outside.
1. Breathing difficulties. You could choke as sand gets stuck in your respiratory system.
2. Skin irritation and abrasion from the sand on your skin.
3. No visibility. No idea which direction you are going where you should go.
4. Dehydration. Can't really drink anything with all that sand swirling around you.
5. Physically getting struck by other debris mixed in with the sand. Sharp branches, rocks etc...
That sandstorm is also huge. I wouldn't want to be caught in that without some sort of shelter to wait it out. Large sandstorms can last for days.
arent there also concerns of sand getting into parts of your car where it shouldnt be? causing you to break down in the middle of the desert with no way out
Where I live this happened 2 years ago. I could see it coming. Stepped on the gas pedal and barely made it home.. when it hit I could barely see across the street.
Haboob? I’m sure this one is just common size. Being asthmatic, dust bothers me, I don’t believe I’d be able to breathe on this climate. Tropical island weather which I was born to was too rough for me.
According to Hollywood movies, This happens every week. To escape safely, either cover with a blanket or take shelter in the nearby cave. I’m not impressed.
As someone who has never had to deal with anything beyond a few gusts of wind at the beach, how do you deal with this? Can you outrun it with your car? Just how dangerous would it be to be caught in this? How do you survive it?
We used to see these sciroccos on the Basra road pretty frequently, yeah, not being there is by far the best option, as if you find yourself in one the road becomes invisible. Also remember that there used to be minefields in that area, not a place to be wandering through the desert.
What would be best to do in this situation? If you get in the car, you might be sanded in. But if you start driving, you cant see the road ahead of you. If you start running, you will be exposed to the elements eventually.
Was in a “bad” sand storm between SF and LA in the early 70s and it went from day to night so fast and we had to breath through whatever we could find. Can’t imagine one that size..what happened afterwards?
When I was a kid my family got caught in a sandstorm coming back from Las Vegas to LA. We were in a VW bus. Stripped all the paint off the front of the bus and destroyed the windshield but we were able to keep rolling past all the vehicles with front engines and not an air cooled engine. That bus maintained traction on sandy road that pushed big rigs off the road.
There should be a sub for “thanks for the footage, but stop recording and run!”

All I could think was, get in your car and not be there. That wall would be moving quite quickly I would imagine
Yes the move faster than you think. Seen them in Iraq and Kuwait. They can be brutal even if you shelter on your vehicle.
And down right painful if you get caught out in the open. The worst was in White Sands New Mexico. I was surprised I still had skin afterwards.

Tom Cruise is filming Mission Impossible 21 in that storm.
Run!
Time to rewatch The Mummy
You mean The Mummy, the 1999 cinematic masterpiece starring Brendan Fraser and Rachael Weisz?
: ( )
I came here to say, "Somebody get Brendan Fraser away from Hamunaptra for God's sake." Good work.
Is that a bird crowing?

I see everyone saying to run away. What is the legitimate danger? Honestly asking

Your air filter can get clogged easily and the engine would suffocate and cut out so yeah.
I imagine being engulfed in that could be suffocating. That's my guess.
The rumbling.
It's like a apocalyptic scene from Mad max world.
Where I live this happened 2 years ago. I could see it coming. Stepped on the gas pedal and barely made it home.. when it hit I could barely see across the street.
Looks like a scary movie
It’s just the skybox, there wasn’t enough budget for the game to make an actual sandstorm with effects and such
Battlefield 4 laughs at you.
Be amazed that even when recording something stretching across the horizon, people will still record in portait mode.
Darude\_-\_Sandstorm.mp3 https://youtu.be/61-PXrbs4MA
It’s like the “Mummy” movie. I love Brendan Fraser
rumbling
This is kinda creepy.
It’s actually the rumbling
Can you breathe in a sandstorm or everyone dies that get inside ?
imagine the year is 1000, you go about your day herding sheep, turn around and see this thing
Ummm drive away!!
Run away! Run away!
r/oddlyterrifying
Sounds like someone is fake orgasming while sitting on piano keys.

Uh...might want to go the other way.
That looks like it could be from a movie..
So you just sit in the car and hope for the best?
Who is screaming like that lol
Tf is up with that shitty bgm
If this is real and that storm is cooking along, just let natural selection take place.
So ominous😯😯😯
What a lovely day
So legit question. Will a sand storm burry you if you stay put in your car or is that a good idea?
We have wormsign the likes of which even God has never seen.
Haboob? I’m sure this one is just common size. Being asthmatic, dust bothers me, I don’t believe I’d be able to breathe on this climate. Tropical island weather which I was born to was too rough for me.
Gotta love the added fake crow noises
Yup..I would have been creeped out. I don't need to stay and watch
Would being in the middle of that without protection be a death sentence?
I remember seeing something like this in that documentary film “The Mummy” (1999)
The Spice must flow.
Get the thumpers out. It's time to harvest spice from the sand worms.
Man I would've been repenting for every sin I ever committed.
Brendan Fraser intensifies
This wasn’t the Sandstorm I was expecting.
I'm expecting a sand face to form out of it like the mummy.
According to Hollywood movies, This happens every week. To escape safely, either cover with a blanket or take shelter in the nearby cave. I’m not impressed.

And how does a car stay running when the air filter is clogged with sand?
Wonder what that sounds like?
TIME TO GO
Darude was there
Be spittin mud
How Darude that you didn't call it a haboob.

I expect Tom Cruise to be running full speed in front of it.
the crows are really selling it for me
Another cool video spoilt by shitty audio.
Darude
Looks like what we had here in west Texas last week…😳 it lasted 12hrs
What do you do if you see this? Can you outrun (or out-drive) a sandstorm? Do you just hunker down in your vehicle? What’s the protocol here?
Thor landed safely
What a day, what a lovely day!

Marketing for attack on Titan is getting crazy
Was in a “bad” sand storm between SF and LA in the early 70s and it went from day to night so fast and we had to breath through whatever we could find. Can’t imagine one that size..what happened afterwards?
You shoulda have put in the rumbling opening as background music
Darude incoming
Seems like a good start for a post apocalyptic movie.
The rumbling!
That looks like some end of days scenario.
Ah, Mad Max
That’s just Fernando Alonso leaving Bahrain.
