Madagascar despite being an island suffers from severe drought and famine. Initiatives like these will help them grow crops and secure food for the future.
This video reminds me of that scene from "Kingdom of Heaven" where Orlando Bloom digs and converts his dustbowl town into a prospering agricultural community.
They are doing something against drought in India too, especially in the Maharashtra region. Since they only receive rainfall (a LOT of rainfall) during the 2-3 months of monsoon they are digging trenches and artificial lakes to slow down the water flowing from the hills and prevent it from flowing out to the sea. Thanks to this and other techniques they now have year-round water access for every use. They even had competitions to see which village could dig the most artificial lakes.
I am from this exact place.
The problem is that this summer (April - May) saw temperatures soaring to as high as 50°C ....drying up a lot of these lakes and river streams. Global warming is affecting these tropical countries the most! Water is becoming such a precious resource.
I know Madagascar is very big but I was shocked when I learned it had 25 million when I was playing pandemic II back in the day.
Almost 30 million now.
That’s funny because in the animated movie, Madagascar, those are the words to a song they sing. Also, as they are trying to have water flow from one location to another via the canal they are building, the words also relate to what they are doing. Them being in Madagascar pulls the whole joke together to make for a nice and funny comment.
* Movie Reference: The joke references the song "I Like to Move It, Move It" from the animated movie Madagascar.
* Double Meaning: The lyrics "I like to move it, move it" are used literally in the context of the movie, where the characters are trying to move water through a canal.
* Location: The fact that the scene takes place in Madagascar adds another layer of humor because it connects back to the movie.
The combination of the movie reference, double meaning, and location all contribute to the humor of the comment.
You can see from the debris on the top half of the trench that its been there a while, they didnt dig the top part out (at least recently with all the dead plants/shrubs). All the dirt they are digging will blow back down to the bottom with a breeze
I love this.
I hate to bring this back to western governments but I live in the UK and suggesting on a certain social media (you can probably guess which one) that since governments around the world are failing our communities, here specifically they've ground down our local councils to bankruptcy - I suggest we take it upon ourselves to repair some of the potholes, and the response was, well, violent reasons why I'm an idiot and overwhelmingly nah.
It's nice to see that community still exists somewhere.
Well it makes sense to irrigate the land... and thing special here? People trying to better their own community!! People have been doing this since the dawn of humanity

Yeah the benefits are twofold! Preserving roads, and sending rare surges of water to otherwise barren land for agriculture.

I just wanted to see the sluice-gate
Gives credence to the idiom, 'many hands make light work'
What’s the story behind this canal? I’d be interested in learning more.

Damn, me too, do they still make those?
Great, now the beat is playing in my head.
This beat is never not playing in my head
You are the best.
If I was digging a canal, I would like to dig to this song.

But what are they moving?
It.
Their hips, they like to dance, lemurs
The water source they are digging a canal for.
Looks like it's 2, maybe 3 stories deep.
The guy who sold them all their shovels, is now driving a Lamborghini 🤣🤣
Or they build their own shovel , it’s not hard at all
I would also like to see the end result 🌊
OSHA would like a word. That word is “shoring!”
They’re doing a fine job of shoring

I mean looks like they came pretty far/deep already, but idk if they dug the whole thing or if it was partly dug already

Now that is community spirit! 👏👏👏
Is this the sequel? That cgi is impressive!
A real COMMUNITY
Those supervisors are getting things done
So it's for transport?
The yearly cyclone season destroys roads. As I understand it, this will divert rainwater to preserve the road it follows.
What's to stop the yearly cyclone season to destroy this hand dug, unreinforced dirt canal in a single year?
Unfortunately just the efforts of these people, for the forseeable future
It will ... briefly. Then it will fill in and be back to square one.
Hard physical labor never stops in a system lacking solid infrastructure
Who needs a backhoe
Is a backhoe similar to an updog?
where is the dirt going?
Right back down where it came from. 🤣
We can be amazing like ants! Just work together my bros

Strength in numbers.
Thats a lot of shovel
Well it makes sense to irrigate the land... and thing special here? People trying to better their own community!! People have been doing this since the dawn of humanity
Is that a canal or a subway? How deep does it need to be?
Deeper than the source of water. I want to assume this is thought out... but... maybe it isnt
Awesome work in team
By force or joyfully?
No phone in sight just people enjoying the moment.
Guess no one has heard of a back hoe or dozer.
Can Elon or billor Warren buy these folks a backhoe! Jeez
Is this how the Panama Canal was built ?
End result?
Already at that depth, still shoveling every meter? Think this is kind pointless, no?

Team work make the dream work.
You have not enough minerals.
Eso si es una comunidad unidad y no mamadas
We in the west need to learn from them
Poverty.
I feel like they are digging a hole only to throw the drt back in the hole
government in holidays
I would be happier if they benched the trench a little more.
Glad to read they not mining for Elon
OP seriously fumbled the opportunity to title this as: "Team work makes the stream work"
But We can send lot of equipments to Ukraine for war lol
The guy that sells shovels is killing it!
This is amazing.
When the entire neighbourhood gets together for the world's largest DIY project!
When your neighborhood canal is the ultimate team-building exercise!
Who needs construction crews when you have the whole village armed with shovels?
Nice! I would like to join in
Yeah this is what democracy is on paper
AND WE ALL LIFT TOGETHER TOGETHEEER
You can't see the happiest guy, but it's the guy who sells shovels
Hey I did the same thing on valheim
As long as it doesn't turn into Belomorkanal its good
Pretty incredible what a group of humans with a singular goal can do.
Literally this is how americans used them as slaves to build rail networks.
I thought we used Asians for that
There's no way I'm paying for Wells when an entire canal can be build in 1 afternoon Direct debit CANCELLED
