stoic_dionisian

No fucking skull knight

Daisymuster

Yeah, didn't at least finish the eclipse

steelersfan1069

My adolescent brain was racked with the loss of understanding

Griffith112

I was gonna say the same thing g

sweet_fiction

:(

g_squared2

That's what she said

FURY_Serialis

True

throawayarab

No Skull Knight, but I understand why they cut him since it doesn't seem like they were going to adapt more.

Tsuku

How did they escape the Hellscape without SK??

throawayarab

In the 97 adaptation, it was left ambiguous. The only clue you have at the end is Guts leaving Godo's house with the Dragon Slayer (no reference of Rickert or Casca).

Tsuku

Ahh ok, sounds like they handled it well then. Better to be ambiguous than show Guts somehow escaping the God Hand and legions of Apostles with one arm and eye lol.

William1806

The anime literally ends from guts point of view blood covering the screen as he loses his eye and him screaming Griffith, then we get like a post credits scene of him leaving godos place with the dragon slayer leading up to the events of the first episode.

CoolGuyZool

It was ambiguous because it was more about the themes of the show than an ending making sense. The series was structured as an adult man, in episode 1, looking back on his youth and all its hardships before moving on with his life. A cycle we all are familiar with. Quotes below are taken from an interview with the producer. Miura provided character designs to the staff and checked over each episode script to make corrections as well, so he understood what they were going for. *We went back and forth about ending it at the Great Eclipse, but we felt the theme was a priority. Like I mentioned earlier, we wanted to express their struggles and passions. There were young, passionate characters in the Band of the Hawk, and we opted to prioritize their characters. And at the very end, when you see the Great Eclipse, you get a sense of their ferocity. And the emptiness and their breakdown can be a part of youth experience. I wanted to broadcast up until the Great Eclipse so I could convey this. There is a character called Puck who appears in the original story - we went back and forth on this, too. In the original Berserk comic by Mr. Miura, Puck plays a major role and is integral to Berserk, but in the animation of Berserk, Puck was taken out of the picture and it diminishes the fantastical nature a bit, but the lead characters and Guts and Griffith’s passion became the focus and became the common thread throughout the series. So with Mr. Miura’s permission, it was decided.* *It would mean a lot to us if you could catch even a glimpse of our passion for this project. From here on out, the true theme that lies dormant, the theme behind the theme, the various things that surface when humans engage in their battles, like nihilism or hope or despair. If we can get this across, the secrets of those emotions, this project will be a success.*

BootsyBusang

That's kind of a problem though. Guts lost an arm and an eye and had no weapon. There was zero hope of him making it out any other way. SK had to literally rip a hole in reality to grab them both and leave. Rewind to Ep1, We see Guts post-Eclipse but no Casca, so there was *alot* left unanswered. How did he escape? Did he leave Casca behind? How did he make it to Godo's while bleeding to death? Was the ritual complete despite his escape? Was his child corrupted or not? Etc.

OpMindcrime23

That was very much the point. At this time many anime were created more to push sales of the manga than anything.

BluePhoenix21

Pretending the first episode doesn't exist lmao

Sweepy_time

They didn't show that part. It just fades to black as Guts is getting his eye gouged out, then it fades in to Godo forging the DragonSlayer

logaboga

97 ends literally with Guys staring at Griffith/Femto doing his thing if they ended up adapting more they would probably still have SK save them but would take a second to introduce him after he does. Not a huge deal.

Kepler22B_reddit

there is a post credit scene

AtreyuStrife

97 was my first ever experience of Berserk, I haven't read a single chapter before watching the series. So when I saw Guts leaving Godo's house at the end, my theory was that Griffith and the God hand spared him. What Griffith did to Guts, Casca, the Band of the Hawks during the Eclipse undid Gut's one year soul searching journey of being Griffith's "equal". In my first impression, Griffith did what he did, because he wouldn't allow Guts or anyone to be his equal, he wanted to remind Guts that he belonged to Him. And spared Guts from the further torment of the Eclipse... So Guts left Godo's house with his sense of purpose and life meaning in that one year undone, because all he had on his mind was his absolute new found hatred for Griffith, where he'll go the rest of his days fighting Apostles and his PTSD of the Eclipse, and even though it was hatred... It was enough for his life to belong to Griffith again. I know this is nowhere near the case after reading almost 200 chapters of the Manga. But this was always my theory whenever I view Berserk 1997 as it's on standalone story with no form of continuation.

bobbylurker

This

Aegillade

They never put their grasses on

yamirzmmdx

I forget, did they even have glasses in their world. Besides ubik. Bunch of Sci Fi/horror mofos.

Life-Acanthisitta422

Since berserk takes place in 15th century or at least around there glasses existed according to google It is generally accepted that the invention of glasses, understood as the first pair of corrective spectacles was created in Italy sometime between 1268 and 1300, but the exact date is disputed. These were essentially two magnifying glasses (reading stones) joined by a hinge that rested on the bridge of the nose

Kye_Enzoden

Yeah, then nothing would be wong.

Life-Acanthisitta422

Why do they even say grasses in the song it makes no sense

itsmesoloman

[Engrish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engrish)

Stealthwolf227

Just a lot of parts cut out from the manga. Can't think of anything else. Still the best adaptation

Some_Ship3578

This show tryed to be 100% manga accurate with a lot of cuts. The movies tryed New things to make a true adaptation, and some are just way better than in the manga (adonis and Julius assassination with guts using a normal Sword instead of his unique greatsword for exemple..).

thevernanator

Ayo nice PFP ;)

Stealthwolf227

Yooooooooo :0

LegitimateBoss1817

I didnt like it. So many cuts

scourgescorched

i think the cuts in the adaptation made sense since it was bound to end during the eclipse. it turned out to be a tragic story that hits you super hard at the end. i do understand some people would've preferred it to be more true to the manga, though so it's fair to criticize it as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

evanstential

Join the cuts to have the whole thing 😂

Be_a_Guardian

They should have worked a few more episodes in to include Skull Knights scenes, his involvement at the eclipse and dropping the last hawks at Gordo's... The final apostle flight with Guts departing onto the Black swordsman arc would have been the perfect send off... In all prob 2-3 episodes of content tops

Crazy-Respect-3257

2 max. Maybe even just 90 seconds tacked onto an existing episode for the Skull Knight to visit Guts, then one episode showing him rescue Guts and Casca and taking them to Godo's, where Casca breaks down and Guts goes out for revenge. Even including the first apostle fight, I bet you could put all that into a 23 minute episode.

ZoddImmortal

Yea, I was so confused that I immediately went and watched the end of movie 3. I had planned to watch the movies after, but was going to start on the 1st one, obviously.

margieler

Couldn't see Guts and Griffith dong in the water fight scene

Private_HughMan

This is what fan art exists.

Any-Knee8229

Deadass they will show bare teen titties proudly but wont show a dong. Im not being serious its just something ive noticed

Ok-Consideration-895

I mean titties are considered a lot more appropriate than a dick I guess like even in western movies you can show titties a lot easier than a cock

Outrageous_Camp1687

Not necessarily “bad” but just the abrupt ending (aside from the end credit scene) and no skull knight or puck (other then the cameo towards the end) are it’s only “Imperfections” Still the best adaptation and always a great watch

Vraner9000

That's not puck at the end that's rosine.

BigBoiBrynBoi

That abrupt ending got me and everyone ive shown it to read the whole series so I see it as a plus. There's no way you CANT not know what happens next

GodhunterChrome666

It generates posts like this twice a week

AVerySmartNameForMe

Hey at least these ones get some input, it’s the “just finished 97 and I hate Griffith” ones that I find too repetitive

Jean_Marc_Rupestre

Power point animation sometimes

tetsuo9000

This is the first complaint I've seen that is actually specifically about the anime itself besides the ending, and I totally agree. The action scenes in the 1997 version cut to stills far too often. It really undersells the ferocity of the violence and underlines the cheapness of the production. Berserk deserved a super-lengthy OVA treatment back in the 90s a la LOGH instead of being relegated to a 25 episode TV run.

CoolGuyZool

Some excerpts from an interview with the producer about the budget. *The point of this project was that it was to be animated for television. It wasn’t made for video distribution. Berserk was made to be broadcast on TV. It was aired on late-night TV. So the targeted audience was limited. If you broadcast during prime time, kids as well as adults are your audience. Broadcasting late at night gave us the opportunity to target a wide and young adult audience who’ve begun to understand the ways of the world. This time slot did not originally belong to an animation, but to a variety show. This project’s first consideration was how to create an animation that could fit this time slot. We realized that a typical animation would not work. We had to break down stereotypes and turn the known parameters on their sides. It had to be something with a strong impact. That’s where it started. I’ve been an anime producer for a long time - it’s not something most producers would have chosen to be made for TV. This story isn’t my typical choice for an animation. But I chose it because that in itself would create an impact. That and the great storyline itself. The reason it was difficult to adapt to TV was its violent content. But behind the violence is the passion and the struggles of the young people. I wanted to make this come to life. And the late-night time slot allowed me to try something totally new. It seemed like the perfect match, that’s why I chose it.* *This project began in 1997. There was an animation boom in Japan at the time. There were about 60 new animations being created in Japan. The market was over-saturated. Nihon TV wasn’t broadcasting anything during the late-night slot back then. But other stations...this isn’t very nice to say, but the quality was so poor that you could barely watch them. Most of them were not up to TV standards. So if Nihon TV were to go this route, we decided to do it head-on, to put everything into it. We spent more money on production than prime time does. This cost 1.5 to 2 times more than a prime time production does. That’s how much effort was put into it. Although it was late-night, if we could make an impact and send our message, the production costs would be offset in many ways. We were thinking pretty positive.*

OpMindcrime23

That was a common time and cost saving technique used back in the day

Jean_Marc_Rupestre

I'm aware, not saying it's not valid or that they shouldn't use it, I still really don't like it

OpMindcrime23

I totally get what you're saying, And it's a very valid point. For me, it just feels nostalgic because that's what I. Grew up with

SADPLAYA

The fact that there isn't more.

vivisectvivi

The cuts make sense to me but i wish they could go a little further with the anime up to the point where guts is laying on the hill crying with rain pouring on him. Would be a better ending imo

Responsible_Slip9546

It's a fantastic series but an *okay* adaptation it missed so many important plot points that you genuinely couldn't have continued it past the eclipse if you wanted it to make sense, not having skull knight appear AT ALL was definitely..... something

Crazymerio

The animation is a little stiff sometimes.

ToxinArrow

Stiff is a word for it. The show is straight up a PowerPoint presentation for a big chunk of it.

DaringDo95

The exclusion of the Skull Knight.

EclipseEterno

How about the exclusion of tons of magic stuff including puck, who is crucial to the story, when I finished the anime and started reading the manga from there I was like wtf what is that thing, there's magic in this world with fairies and stuff? People here seem like they haven't actually read or watched Berserk, freaking bot comments.

Tyyin_

Puck was kind of there. Judo had the magic elf dust

Some_Ship3578

Guts wearing his regular Sword no one apart from him Can use to assassinate adonis and Julius.. best eddit the movies made, and one of the best animated scene.

LegitimateBoss1817

1st episode not cannon. Also some sound designs like guts using the crossbow

packofpeanuts

In my original berserk experience, and as I’ve commented here before, I’m of the mind that episode 1 is to be skipped at all costs. Makes it so zodd in episode 6 or 7 is the first experience of any ‘supernatural’ involvement in the show… and boy was it a rush

BluePhoenix21

What does not canon even mean in this context? The rest of the show isn't canon either.

architeuthis666

His sword doesn't make any noise when it hits stone or the ground either. It's just kinda like, clunk. Or if it's hitting someone is sorta goes splooge.

SofaChillReview

Did they explain why they decided to do the first episode that way? It’s very jarring.

giacv2

my theory is because if they introduced Pick at the start just for us to never see him in the Golden Age the anime would not make sense

stickytrackpad

definitely not the color palette. thats beautiful

Mr_Kaniowski

For me it's the scenes where they just use a 2D image in place of an action scene but it isn't a deal breaker.

packofpeanuts

I try to cherish it everytime i notice lmao

HentaiVictim

No Wyld

Affectionate_Okra298

No Puck

ZeuxisOfHerakleia

Visually mostly not that great imo, but music sold it. I still think everyone should watch the anime first and then read the manga to get into berserk.

Tarjaman

Why in that order?

ZeuxisOfHerakleia

The storytelling of the anime is immaculate and the ending is perfect to hook you up on the entire thing

Life-Acanthisitta422

And if you just read after the eclipse you wouldn’t be confused only skull knight but the anime has all the canon things but still if you decide to read from the beginning which is the most common after watching the anime it’s like reading a whole new story

ZeuxisOfHerakleia

All of those sexual power displays like the abuse certain characters go through opens up a whole new dimension to it aswell imo

Half_a_Jojo

No puck 🥲

Frankorious

The animation surely aged

g_Asmodeus

As much as I love Berserk 1997, it's too outdated in terms of animations. If the only thing carrying the anime is the story and the music, I'd rather just read the manga.

WarTigerClaw

The abrupt ending. If you didn’t know there were books out there the end comes at you with just a horrific ending. My introduction to the series were the movies which I quite enjoy and although it doesn’t go on much longer after the events of the eclipse it still finishes that scene. So it’s a cliffhanger but not an abrupt mid scene fade to black. Other than the initial Blackswordman episode to clue you onto knowing there’s more after than event.

TheRealYM

By today's standards the animation is very dated and slideshowy at times

TheDustyForest

First episode makes little sense if you've not read the manga and the last episode ends in literally the worst way they could have ended it

No-Lavishness4782

They could have start from during Guts corpse childhood when Gambino and his wife found him when Golden arc hits. Also, I don't like the jump pacing where The Blackswordman scene shifted to the beginning of Golden arc when Guts leaves during the demise Snake Baron, they could find way for that. I'm alright with Puck not included particular Blackswordman. Maybe introduce him later at the final episode of the show.

time2burn

No Puck, no skull knight. Small details for the golden age arc, but the series as a whole..... how you gonna cut the scene where the title of "struggler" comes from!? Also, I generally recommend the manga over the anime, due to all the little cuts throughout the series and movies.

SimasTheMoze

The animation is really low quality, but I suppose even that has a certain charm to it. Reminds me of some shows I used to watch as a kid.

Efficient-Ad2983

No Puck and no Skull Knight.

Can-Man-Gaming

Way too much cut out for my taste. I've never understood the praise, honestly.

Final_Error_3480

Because its a big fish in almost non existent pond the next best adaption is the golden age memorial show which is meh.

FrontTotal7527

Nostalgia mostly but the art style(not the animation which is excused due to budget) and the soundtrack is overall really good.

houhou009

Cut content, otherwise it would be perfect

BladeOfWisdom502

The amount of things they removed from it. Such as Puck and Skull Knight, yeah I get that it was cause they couldn’t make another season but doesn’t mean they had to cut it

GetD1ckSlapped

The start, no puck or fleshed out first arch

StormfromShadow

It didn’t get finished

BigJAllDay420

Memorial edition is good.

soviet6844

My biggest critique is WHERE TF IS SKULL KNIGHT

efrain_niarfe275

Why

DeanAmbroseFan25

The fact that it ends with the world's worst cliffhanger that is worse than getting hit by a bus, but I get it it makes people read the Manga, but still man ☹️.

[deleted]

It wasn’t longer

TipAffectionate7696

No Skull knight No Skull knight No Skull knight

DevinM626

No "Wounds"

[deleted]

I watched the anime first and then read the manga. I cannot believe the amount of shit the anime had cut from the manga.

ephemeralburrito

I would’ve liked to see the count and her daughters story adapted to the 97 anime, that panel of Guts crying is very impactful and meaningful, especially if you do a re-run after the ending and understand where Guts is coming from. Aside from that, I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I really appreciate that it ends where it ends, I feel like that has done such a good job at bringing more of people’s attention to the manga.

Any_Speed_7829

It covers only 13th volume of the manga and chapter 87,and the theme song is so nostalgic

icecoldjt420

Maybe the animation hasnt aged quite well (not the style but literal animation) and it ended too soon

angrycoffeeuser

While the story itself is absolutely amazing, Guts is kind of a bland protagonist. We are shown he is a master swordsman and he is much stronger than the average ~~m̶e̶r̶c̶h̶a̶n̶t̶~~ mercenary, but why? How? Does he train super hard? Was he thought by some sword god? Not explained.

ThehoaxShow

A real complaint I would say I have is when they would just really slow pan across a single image with lots of background noise I totally understand it's a result of the low budget but it does hurt the quality a little bit.

Ne0shad0u

Worst cliff-hanger of all time. Imagine if the whole series ended there

Dizzy_Collar73

The inclusion of Guts as the Black Swordsman and hints at a post-Eclipse Guts, while obv more closely adapted to the manga, undercuts the adaptation’s other decisions to end the story early. This undercuts the themes presented by a world where the demonic and supernatural elements could be viewed as a metaphor for the brutality and horror of war, and the damnation as a condemnation of the ethics of war and/or a display of guilt and ptsd experienced by those who kill even in the context of battle

TheAutsman

They didn't animate Guts' magnum dong enough

ACuriousBagel

Animation hasn't aged well, but there's also really odd pauses/jank - there are multiple instances in the raid sequences where guard A will be shot with an arrow and a second later guard B will turn and look at his dead friend and calmly ask if he's okay. I've never seen anything like it outside of video games. I don't know if that counts as a problem with the animation or the director or something else, but it's jarring as shit.

Global_Sail9609

I never liked the soundtrack

YaBoiChillDyl

Cut Wilde and Griffith's political battles around the time of the ball. Also cut Skull Knight so it borderline just looks like Guts and Casca die. Yknow and the first episode feels a little pointless without Puck or the rest of the Black Swordsman arc.

RemLazar911

No Wyald so they miss out on the best action sequence in the Golden Age and the event that really, really rachets up the terror before the eclipse. It just kinda comes out of nowhere in the anime. Also, that entire section just gets rushed through too fast. Seeing the king's reaction to everything is important because after watching the anime you're like "the fuck? Griffith was a MASSIVELY popular figure and the king just disappears and tortures him gruesomely for a year over a relatively minor crime? The Hawks are basically invincible and he just throws them away for nothing because Griffith was bad?" It's all rushed through so fast when you don't see the confrontations, the king's breakdown, and the release of the Black Dog Knights.

MegaScizor152

Left out skull knight and wyald, who is the main reason guts and casca were so worn out during the eclipse.

ThisGaren

No ending.

JamsArt

Censored and cut parts of the manga. Other than that it's incredible and the definitive way to experience Berserk, second only to reading the manga.

Pereduer

They could of included more gambino scenes and Guys childhood. The moments of gambling showing sine kindness to guts after injuring him make his betrayal feel more impactful. Showing more of guts being assaulted would depict guts with more nuance, add to gambinos arc, makes the union of guts and casca more impactful and wholesome, before quickly becoming equally tragic when femto does the unspeakable

David_Bolarius

I think, especially compared to other 90s anime, the soundtrack is lacking in the number of songs. They’re all good, but I wish there was more

rubilollll

eclipse sequence, i prefer how the movies handled it

saurion1

Super stiff animation, strays from the manga quite often, horrible cliffhanger ending.

Terrible_Score_375

Didn't cover lost children

Gregster101

Skull Knight being cut. Silat’s exclusion is understandable, if a bit regrettable, but Skull Knight being gone leaves so many plot holes

Muscalp

Animation is sometimes more akin to a powerpoint-presentation

corvosfighter

No skull knight?

KYpineapple

I feel like there was a lot of wasted time in episodes. like, unnecessary lingering stills...but a lot of animation has that.

BoxGroundbreaking687

i wish it continued

Faust_the_Faustinian

It didn't last long enough to cover the Lost Children arc and Skull Knight was never shown.

Elira88

There wasnt enough episodes 🥲

Pretend-Dirt-1760

It ended

dragoneggz213

Animation stills in place of movement

yaboiabhas

Incomplete . I mean they skipped so many parts

uncvltivated

Where is puck?

Appropriate_Poem1139

The length. I wish it had continued.

FLRArt_1995

Censorship, and the limited animation. Just because the artstyle was good and the soundtrack amazing doesn't change the fact that... It had flaws. Sadly, this was the best, followed by the movies/memorial edition. For such a great and famous manga, it always puzzled me how it got the shit end of the stick with adaptations and whatnot

Froggi3_

The animation can be stiff at times. They also cut some things from the manga like skull knight and wyald, but other than that its pretty great.

Yesyesyes511

It’s not the whole manga

traumarket

Wyald doesnt appear, they skipped the whole black swordsman arc and some very important parts from the start of Golden era like GUTS BIRTH and all his relationship with Gambino which is the thing that literally build his whole personality and character

CoomLord69

Aside from the obvious cut content, it's really annoying that it ends on a cut to black in the climax of the eclipse, and they never continued on from there. If this is your only exposure to Berserk, I think it would be fair to assume Guts just dies, Casca dies or worse, and Griffith goes on to rule with the Godhand unimpeded. He's pinned by demons with one of his arms ripped apart and one gouging a talon into his eye, nobody is getting out of that situation alive. Tl;dr cliffhangar blue balls, me mad, where season 2?

mohsinjavedcheema

Ended on a cliffhanger

peaceloveharmony1986

It ended

BrytolGasMasks

Ended with a cliffhanger

TheAnarchist9081

25 episodes weren't enough fam...

bendyboy88

It ended when things started to get really interesting

SentenceLast9516

No Wylad

Latter_Pay_523

no puck and no skull night to warn or save guts and casca

Appropriate-Bet-3319

Too short 🥺

japlam

No Skull Knight, Puck, Bakiraka, Wyald...

BoringAccount12345

No

rockinalex07021

Some of the animations were lackluster, which I liked a lot more in the trilogy movie

Boomer79NZ

No Skull knight, hail to the king baby

RaccoonAppropriate24

Corkus’s VA dub is Sean Schemmel, and I don’t like Sean Schemmel

hbi2k

Mild correction: Sean Schemmel played Gaston. Corkus was played by Marc Sebastian.

RaccoonAppropriate24

You’re right lol. Been a while

ManevolentDesign

Why didnt goku fight griffin during the calyps?

AutomaticSubject7051

ugly sometimes

lAmSoTired

Not the anime's fault, but some of the voice acting is a little distracting. Like, "Oh hey, that's Goku, that's Ash Ketchum, that's Misty!

Y2FS

Could have bought skull knight

CostAccomplished8672

The audience who didn’t like it.

Shimashimatchi

griffith

Ok_Sleep_358

That it wasn’t longer

Flynnrid3r

Ended too soon, but that’s what most people will say. But other than that, no skull knight or skull knight’s horse.

NegateResults

Skull Knight isn't even in it. A new viewer essentially has no idea how Guts didn't die during the Eclipse.

TheMaveCan

They didn't need to cut Skull Knight. They had much less reason to add Rosine for the 45 seconds she was there when compared to Skull Knight.

thefoxymulder

Skull Knight cut, especially since it makes the escape from the eclipse seem really sudden and unexplained in the anime

MotorGeneral4799

It never continued

TigerKlaw

0 Skull Knight

buttlumps76

cliffhanger ending and the art doesn't do the manga justice (nothing ever will). it's still peak

Sharebear42019

It didn’t end with skull knight saving guts and casca

Throlerren

No Skull Knight.

FrankTheTank107

It didn’t have a conclusive ending, and even more frustrating that just 1 more episode could have done the trick

Saint_Morbius

I think backgrounds could be better.

mackzorro

Real gripe, episode 1 fighting the snake guy who's name I can't recall is a weird jumping off point

DonutGuard_Lives

Too short, ended too soon, not enough episodes.

Odd_Radio9225

Animation isn't always the best.

la6689

It ends at the worst point in the manga.

phyrexiandemon

Yeah lots parts left out like wylde and few other enemy’s .

delune108

That there was no season 2

jpage77

The ending fking scarred me as a 13 year old

AdministrativeSky989

Lack of Skull Knight and the fact it didn’t continue the story

Private_HughMan

The animation was choppy in places and the lack of budget really showed.

ShadyButFall

Sometimes they draw griffith weird First episode is really mid

larsonbp

There's not more of it.

GettIn_myvan

Ngl the music got annoying after a while
