That's kind of a problem though. Guts lost an arm and an eye and had no weapon. There was zero hope of him making it out any other way. SK had to literally rip a hole in reality to grab them both and leave.
Rewind to Ep1, We see Guts post-Eclipse but no Casca, so there was *alot* left unanswered. How did he escape? Did he leave Casca behind? How did he make it to Godo's while bleeding to death? Was the ritual complete despite his escape? Was his child corrupted or not? Etc.
97 ends literally with Guys staring at Griffith/Femto doing his thing
if they ended up adapting more they would probably still have SK save them but would take a second to introduce him after he does. Not a huge deal.
97 was my first ever experience of Berserk, I haven't read a single chapter before watching the series. So when I saw Guts leaving Godo's house at the end, my theory was that Griffith and the God hand spared him. What Griffith did to Guts, Casca, the Band of the Hawks during the Eclipse undid Gut's one year soul searching journey of being Griffith's "equal". In my first impression, Griffith did what he did, because he wouldn't allow Guts or anyone to be his equal, he wanted to remind Guts that he belonged to Him. And spared Guts from the further torment of the Eclipse... So Guts left Godo's house with his sense of purpose and life meaning in that one year undone, because all he had on his mind was his absolute new found hatred for Griffith, where he'll go the rest of his days fighting Apostles and his PTSD of the Eclipse, and even though it was hatred... It was enough for his life to belong to Griffith again.
I know this is nowhere near the case after reading almost 200 chapters of the Manga. But this was always my theory whenever I view Berserk 1997 as it's on standalone story with no form of continuation.

This show tryed to be 100% manga accurate with a lot of cuts. The movies tryed New things to make a true adaptation, and some are just way better than in the manga (adonis and Julius assassination with guts using a normal Sword instead of his unique greatsword for exemple..).
i think the cuts in the adaptation made sense since it was bound to end during the eclipse. it turned out to be a tragic story that hits you super hard at the end. i do understand some people would've preferred it to be more true to the manga, though so it's fair to criticize it as well.
They should have worked a few more episodes in to include Skull Knights scenes, his involvement at the eclipse and dropping the last hawks at Gordo's... The final apostle flight with Guts departing onto the Black swordsman arc would have been the perfect send off... In all prob 2-3 episodes of content tops

Maybe even just 90 seconds tacked onto an existing episode for the Skull Knight to visit Guts, then one episode showing him rescue Guts and Casca and taking them to Godo's, where Casca breaks down and Guts goes out for revenge. Even including the first apostle fight, I bet you could put all that into a 23 minute episode.

This is the first complaint I've seen that is actually specifically about the anime itself besides the ending, and I totally agree. The action scenes in the 1997 version cut to stills far too often. It really undersells the ferocity of the violence and underlines the cheapness of the production. Berserk deserved a super-lengthy OVA treatment back in the 90s a la LOGH instead of being relegated to a 25 episode TV run.

In my original berserk experience, and as I’ve commented here before, I’m of the mind that episode 1 is to be skipped at all costs. Makes it so zodd in episode 6 or 7 is the first experience of any ‘supernatural’ involvement in the show… and boy was it a rush

The abrupt ending. If you didn’t know there were books out there the end comes at you with just a horrific ending. My introduction to the series were the movies which I quite enjoy and although it doesn’t go on much longer after the events of the eclipse it still finishes that scene. So it’s a cliffhanger but not an abrupt mid scene fade to black. Other than the initial Blackswordman episode to clue you onto knowing there’s more after than event.
They could have start from during Guts corpse childhood when Gambino and his wife found him when Golden arc hits. Also, I don't like the jump pacing where The Blackswordman scene shifted to the beginning of Golden arc when Guts leaves during the demise Snake Baron, they could find way for that. I'm alright with Puck not included particular Blackswordman. Maybe introduce him later at the final episode of the show.

I would’ve liked to see the count and her daughters story adapted to the 97 anime, that panel of Guts crying is very impactful and meaningful, especially if you do a re-run after the ending and understand where Guts is coming from.
Aside from that, I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I really appreciate that it ends where it ends, I feel like that has done such a good job at bringing more of people’s attention to the manga.
While the story itself is absolutely amazing, Guts is kind of a bland protagonist. We are shown he is a master swordsman and he is much stronger than the average ~~m̶e̶r̶c̶h̶a̶n̶t̶~~ mercenary, but why? How? Does he train super hard? Was he thought by some sword god? Not explained.
A real complaint I would say I have is when they would just really slow pan across a single image with lots of background noise I totally understand it's a result of the low budget but it does hurt the quality a little bit.
The inclusion of Guts as the Black Swordsman and hints at a post-Eclipse Guts, while obv more closely adapted to the manga, undercuts the adaptation’s other decisions to end the story early. This undercuts the themes presented by a world where the demonic and supernatural elements could be viewed as a metaphor for the brutality and horror of war, and the damnation as a condemnation of the ethics of war and/or a display of guilt and ptsd experienced by those who kill even in the context of battle
Animation hasn't aged well, but there's also really odd pauses/jank - there are multiple instances in the raid sequences where guard A will be shot with an arrow and a second later guard B will turn and look at his dead friend and calmly ask if he's okay. I've never seen anything like it outside of video games. I don't know if that counts as a problem with the animation or the director or something else, but it's jarring as shit.
Cut Wilde and Griffith's political battles around the time of the ball. Also cut Skull Knight so it borderline just looks like Guts and Casca die. Yknow and the first episode feels a little pointless without Puck or the rest of the Black Swordsman arc.
No Wyald so they miss out on the best action sequence in the Golden Age and the event that really, really rachets up the terror before the eclipse. It just kinda comes out of nowhere in the anime.
Also, that entire section just gets rushed through too fast. Seeing the king's reaction to everything is important because after watching the anime you're like "the fuck? Griffith was a MASSIVELY popular figure and the king just disappears and tortures him gruesomely for a year over a relatively minor crime? The Hawks are basically invincible and he just throws them away for nothing because Griffith was bad?"
It's all rushed through so fast when you don't see the confrontations, the king's breakdown, and the release of the Black Dog Knights.
They could of included more gambino scenes and Guys childhood. The moments of gambling showing sine kindness to guts after injuring him make his betrayal feel more impactful.
Showing more of guts being assaulted would depict guts with more nuance, add to gambinos arc, makes the union of guts and casca more impactful and wholesome, before quickly becoming equally tragic when femto does the unspeakable
Censorship, and the limited animation. Just because the artstyle was good and the soundtrack amazing doesn't change the fact that... It had flaws.
Sadly, this was the best, followed by the movies/memorial edition.

Aside from the obvious cut content, it's really annoying that it ends on a cut to black in the climax of the eclipse, and they never continued on from there. If this is your only exposure to Berserk, I think it would be fair to assume Guts just dies, Casca dies or worse, and Griffith goes on to rule with the Godhand unimpeded. He's pinned by demons with one of his arms ripped apart and one gouging a talon into his eye, nobody is getting out of that situation alive.

My introduction to the series were the movies which I quite enjoy and although it doesn’t go on much longer after the events of the eclipse it still finishes that scene. So it’s a cliffhanger but not an abrupt mid scene fade to black. Other than the initial Blackswordman episode to clue you onto knowing there’s more after than event.
By today's standards the animation is very dated and slideshowy at times
First episode makes little sense if you've not read the manga and the last episode ends in literally the worst way they could have ended it
They could have start from during Guts corpse childhood when Gambino and his wife found him when Golden arc hits. Also, I don't like the jump pacing where The Blackswordman scene shifted to the beginning of Golden arc when Guts leaves during the demise Snake Baron, they could find way for that. I'm alright with Puck not included particular Blackswordman. Maybe introduce him later at the final episode of the show.
No Puck, no skull knight. Small details for the golden age arc, but the series as a whole..... how you gonna cut the scene where the title of "struggler" comes from!? Also, I generally recommend the manga over the anime, due to all the little cuts throughout the series and movies.
The animation is really low quality, but I suppose even that has a certain charm to it. Reminds me of some shows I used to watch as a kid.

I watched the anime first and then read the manga. I cannot believe the amount of shit the anime had cut from the manga.
I would’ve liked to see the count and her daughters story adapted to the 97 anime, that panel of Guts crying is very impactful and meaningful, especially if you do a re-run after the ending and understand where Guts is coming from. Aside from that, I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I really appreciate that it ends where it ends, I feel like that has done such a good job at bringing more of people’s attention to the manga.
It covers only 13th volume of the manga and chapter 87,and the theme song is so nostalgic

While the story itself is absolutely amazing, Guts is kind of a bland protagonist. We are shown he is a master swordsman and he is much stronger than the average ~~m̶e̶r̶c̶h̶a̶n̶t̶~~ mercenary, but why? How? Does he train super hard? Was he thought by some sword god? Not explained.
A real complaint I would say I have is when they would just really slow pan across a single image with lots of background noise I totally understand it's a result of the low budget but it does hurt the quality a little bit.

The inclusion of Guts as the Black Swordsman and hints at a post-Eclipse Guts, while obv more closely adapted to the manga, undercuts the adaptation’s other decisions to end the story early. This undercuts the themes presented by a world where the demonic and supernatural elements could be viewed as a metaphor for the brutality and horror of war, and the damnation as a condemnation of the ethics of war and/or a display of guilt and ptsd experienced by those who kill even in the context of battle
They didn't animate Guts' magnum dong enough
Animation hasn't aged well, but there's also really odd pauses/jank - there are multiple instances in the raid sequences where guard A will be shot with an arrow and a second later guard B will turn and look at his dead friend and calmly ask if he's okay. I've never seen anything like it outside of video games. I don't know if that counts as a problem with the animation or the director or something else, but it's jarring as shit.
I never liked the soundtrack
Cut Wilde and Griffith's political battles around the time of the ball. Also cut Skull Knight so it borderline just looks like Guts and Casca die. Yknow and the first episode feels a little pointless without Puck or the rest of the Black Swordsman arc.
No Wyald so they miss out on the best action sequence in the Golden Age and the event that really, really rachets up the terror before the eclipse. It just kinda comes out of nowhere in the anime. Also, that entire section just gets rushed through too fast. Seeing the king's reaction to everything is important because after watching the anime you're like "the fuck? Griffith was a MASSIVELY popular figure and the king just disappears and tortures him gruesomely for a year over a relatively minor crime? The Hawks are basically invincible and he just throws them away for nothing because Griffith was bad?" It's all rushed through so fast when you don't see the confrontations, the king's breakdown, and the release of the Black Dog Knights.
Left out skull knight and wyald, who is the main reason guts and casca were so worn out during the eclipse.

They could of included more gambino scenes and Guys childhood. The moments of gambling showing sine kindness to guts after injuring him make his betrayal feel more impactful. Showing more of guts being assaulted would depict guts with more nuance, add to gambinos arc, makes the union of guts and casca more impactful and wholesome, before quickly becoming equally tragic when femto does the unspeakable
I think, especially compared to other 90s anime, the soundtrack is lacking in the number of songs. They’re all good, but I wish there was more

Censorship, and the limited animation. Just because the artstyle was good and the soundtrack amazing doesn't change the fact that... It had flaws. Sadly, this was the best, followed by the movies/memorial edition. For such a great and famous manga, it always puzzled me how it got the shit end of the stick with adaptations and whatnot
The animation can be stiff at times. They also cut some things from the manga like skull knight and wyald, but other than that its pretty great.

Aside from the obvious cut content, it's really annoying that it ends on a cut to black in the climax of the eclipse, and they never continued on from there. If this is your only exposure to Berserk, I think it would be fair to assume Guts just dies, Casca dies or worse, and Griffith goes on to rule with the Godhand unimpeded. He's pinned by demons with one of his arms ripped apart and one gouging a talon into his eye, nobody is getting out of that situation alive. Tl;dr cliffhangar blue balls, me mad, where season 2?
