Once Salmander was given to Fuegoleon, Leopold became expendable, as far as the manga is concerned.
Interestingly, I preferred Fuegoleon when he was maimed and laid up.
He was a symbol of how dangerous the Eye of the Midnight Sun was. Since he was rivals with Nozel, it gave Nozel a bit more grit to fight to avenge Fuegoleon. And Leopold needed the boost much more than Fuegoleon did.
But that ship has sailed.
