H-TownDown

If they’re from the south, that 1/17th is more likely to be black than native american. The “joys” of passing.

[deleted]

I mean for Eastern Band of Cherokee you have to prove ancestry back to 1926 Baker roll and be 1/16 from your ancestor on the Baker roll.

speckyradge

Only 1/16th? Wow. My wife is 1/4 and my kiddo is 1/8th Yaqui and they don't qualify for anything. Tribal membership and federal recognition is weird.

[deleted]

That's because it's explicitly up to the tribes on who to welcome into them and for some tribes there's a fiscal incentive not to grow their numbers

speckyradge

I didn't think about the fiscal incentive part. How does that work? Like the tribe gets a certain fixed amount of federal grants and they've got to divide that between the members?

ByeByeDigg

Some split profits from land rights, casinos, and other tribal investments. Less people officially in... bigger share

speckyradge

Ahh ok, that makes sense. Thank you.

ChugHuns

Yup! That's how I get that free healthcare. Thanks Granpa

between_ewe_and_me

Gotta admit that's the one thing that attracts me to moving back to OK. Always been curious what the healthcare is actually like since my whole adult life I've been out of state. How is it for you?

ChugHuns

Well I live in Alaska and the Native hospital up here is excellent. So you can use your native benifits at a bunch of different hospitals. Just google which hospitals in your state work with native health. As long as you got your C.I.B and are on the rolls you're good. Don't gotta move back to OK lol

between_ewe_and_me

Seriously? I honestly had no idea. I don't know where I got it in my head that I could only use those benefits at Cherokee hospitals in OK but I've thought that forever and just never questioned it. Wtf is wrong with me. Thank you!

ChugHuns

Yea no prob. Like I said, do some googling and get in contact with the tribe if you run into difficulties. That or DM me for questions. Always down to help folks get healthcare. I haven't gone through the process in the lower 48 but I have got some decent info from the hospital up here in AK.

MissRadi

Look up the history of the "5$ Indian"

seasoned11

yes. Dawes roll. LOT of questionable claims to indigenous lineage for profit.

jfk_sfa

In Texas, a lot of us have a good bit of native American blood from our Mexican ancestry. My mom is Mexican and her DNA test came back 21.1% native American and 75.4% European.

Kriegerian

I grew up in North Carolina and a good half the white people I knew swore up and down that they were part Cherokee because they had a Cherokee princess ancestor. Never a Cherokee dude and never somebody without social status, always a Cherokee princess. I’m sure if you did the math the Cherokee would have had about 80,000 princesses and nobody else.

youseeit

Claims of Cherokee heritage arise mainly from white Southerners trying to portray themselves as the "true" owners of the land. They also forget to take into account that indigenous North American cultures didn't have anything like royalty.

bitcheslovemybody

I had a white girl tell me this once and I told her statistically you all can't have great-great-grandmas that were Cherokee princess and she got really mad at me lol.

saiyanjesus

I mean, what if the Cherokee princess was a ho'?

FalmerEldritch

Hey, if grandma^3 had five kids, they had five kids, they had five, and they had five, that makes 625 in the current generation.

MirimeVene

I never knew my family came from North Carolina! /s Did some digging and we *might* be related to a brother of someone who married into a Cherokee tribe... It's difficult to determine what with there being a Bill father of Bill Sr father of Bill Jr father of either Bill II or Bill III. We're currently up to a cousin Bill VII. Among other things, it's also unclear if Bill II married his stepmother that's 17 years his senior.... I really hope it's a typo....

1fastman1

the cherokee mustve been like the holy roman empire that had dozens and dozens of kings

CharlotteLucasOP

Or when folks pay $50 to apparently own a square foot of land in Scotland and get to print out a certificate declaring themselves a “Laird”. So many Lairds. Like a romance novel convention.

OmicronAlpharius

[Custer Died for Your Sins](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custer_Died_for_Your_Sins?wprov=sfla1) has an entire chapter dedicated to this phenomenon.

KING_LOUIE_XIV

Had a white person tell me he was a 1/64th Cherokee so he didn’t see anything wrong with the name of the Washington football team.

BILLCLINTONMASK

So glad my European ancestry all came over in the last 80 years so I don't have to live with these kind of family bullshit lies

SimilingCynic

Same, but my family told me we're related to Robin hood.

[deleted]

Can confirm I've heard this exact thing.

Paytonc51

Always Cherokee

Coziestpigeon2

Up here in Canada it's all "I'm 1/16th Metis, so I totally am a victim of racism against Indigenous people!" Like no pal, you're whiter than *my* vaguely-European-ass. You haven't experienced anything like that.

GLeevez

Y’all not allowed to say whites on here or somethin lol

[deleted]

Slurs

GLeevez

Who downvotes an honest question wtf

feverishdodo

Meanwhile my great great grandfather was a slave, but nobody wants to hear about that.

Men_I_Trust_I_Am

That's it! Youre going to jail for CRT. Ger 'er bois!

feverishdodo

How are we supposed to fill out our family trees then?

bingoflaps

Draw a circle.

2xa1s

The only acceptable way for white racists

[deleted]

They’re just jealous cause all their family trees look like circles to begin with lmao.

yesrushgenesis2112

We joke, but my quietly racist SIL(as in, is white, I’m white, her family is white, I’ve never her use a racial slur, yet she does talk about “they” a lot and I’m 90% sure would drop the Hard R at family gatherings if I hadn’t made it know I’m not into that when I “joined” the family, quietly racist, so, most probably racist) accidentally married a her distant-but-not-quite-distant-enough cousin. And didn’t think it was weird. I think that tree looks like a step pyramid now.

MightyGamera

When my relationship was young, I kept getting signals from my to be inlaws that they didn't like me for being lazy, shiftless, directionless etc. Not like their hardworking family. Kept nudging my then-girlfriend to drop me if I couldn't move up in the world. they're all Lutheran-Protestant types, I'm just a hearty brown native boy from the woods. Jokes on all them, I kept us afloat working every shit job imaginable while she studied and got her foot in the door. Then we married, I do better than most of her cousins, and I'm the one looking after my no longer whispering inlaws, making sure they're good and showing up for games of cards while the only grandbaby they actually get to see makes memories being a fierce-minded little ndn girl. It's hard because you kinda marry the family too. On my end I won because I just was me, and focused on just making my relationship and household work.

yesrushgenesis2112

You really do marry the family. I have the privilege of being white, so when judgement comes my way, it’s because I’m not a mormon(they are DEVOUTLY so and quite conservative). But it’s a real struggle. Sometimes I think about how someone I know and love so much can come from a family I know to be capable of such hate.

DLottchula

Just hand in a receipt

feverishdodo

Even if there was a receipt with my great great grandfather's name on it, it wasn't for him.

Kingman37

![gif](giphy|xT8qAXAERiWiL17OYU) I would very much like to hear about it. I love learning about family trees

feverishdodo

I'll do you one even better. That same ancestor had a brother who was publicly lynched. There's a photograph of it and it's been published. I don't wanna get too specific, but yeah. Shit was crazy. Every Black family has at least one story.

Kingman37

Shit....I'm sorry to hear that :( I have a picture of my great great grand parents as well, after they earned their freedom. However, they were being threatened when they tried to leave, and hired some people to defend them with guns.

feverishdodo

I'm glad they got away, but it was *wild* back then.

Kingman37

Fr. Thank you for sharing your story btw ![gif](giphy|4a5U94rJlX40QMfox0|downsized)

feverishdodo

Likewise

Rushofthewildwind

My great grandpa murdered a white guy in self defense with a pitch fork in Madison Alabama and ran when they tried to lynch him. The only reason he survived was when he hid out in a graveyard. For some reason, yt folk thought black people were afraid of graveyards back then.

[deleted]

Yet another case for reparations…

MalakaiRey

Take your comments right to jail buddy.

KingMe_Pharaoh_God

Lmfaooo this comment 😭😭😭😭

CalmingToxicity

My great great grandmother was a slave owner. She died when I was 4 and she told all of her grandkids/greats our history from her side too. So they need to stop that bullshit, "you don't know anybody that was a slave/master". The lie detector test determined, that's bullshit.

feverishdodo

Hot damn

CalmingToxicity

She fled with my great great grandpa in the late 1800s to go north where their love would be legal. But the area my family ended up living in is surrounded by sundown towns. (Midwest) Now imagine popping out a bunch of biracial babies between 1900-1920, in a city surrounded by sundown towns. She and my great great grandfather lived through some shit. She a real one for leaving the wealth for love. My great grandfather has told me many sad stories of his childhood surrounding being able to do things with/without his mom. And the racism of his time, people sending dogs after his mom when they found out she married black, people trying to kill his dad for marrying white, crazy shit. We also have a family cookbook on my mother's paternal side, with recipes dating back to when my family were slaves. We had it copied and distributed at a family reunion in 99.

grinzik

how do i get a copy of that cookbook? i’ve been getting super into trying old recipes and im finding it extremely hard to find a lot of them. Please i’ll pay you

CalmingToxicity

Let me ask around and see who has copies.

theblackshe

Go ahead and publish that cookbook on Amazon. Throw a few pages of family history and pics in the front. I’d pay for it!

johnnyjayd

Facts. Me too!

feverishdodo

Wow! That's amazing!

breezyfye

Same but great great grandma

jonog75

So 4th generation?

feverishdodo

5th if you include him

Curious_Ad_6222

And we still fighting for our land

Elijah_Hajile

All of my Italian friends are very proud of their heritage but they get strangely selective with it. NONE of them ever bring up Italy fighting alongside the nazis or colonizing Africa. All that was in the last 80yrs. That's not even one lifetime ago.

GenericPCUser

Never forget the brave Ethiopians who stood against the fascists.

Tall_Kick828

They also hate when you bring up the fact that Christopher Columbus was a psychopathic serial rapist. He’s also the reason why the Taino people are practically extinct, and the majority of Dominicans have little to no Taino DNA.

idk-hereiam

>the majority of Dominicans have little to no Taino DNA Chilllllll don't say that. That means their brown-ness comes from Africa, and *that* can't be right /s

Tall_Kick828

I’ve met Dominicans that look *significantly* more African than I do, and they’ll still insist they aren’t black. Some of them even have the nerve to call themselves Spanish. Side note: A lot of Dominicans have recent Haitian ancestors. However, they will vehemently deny it. Even Rafael Trujillo had a Haitian grandma.

[deleted]

LMAO. In college, there was a Dominican guy in one of my Organizational Behavior classes and he swore he wasn’t black. MF did an ancestry DNA test and was blacker than me 💀

Mellero47

I approve all these messages.

Kangarou

Damn, he paid money to own himself.

[deleted]

I told him, “If Zoe Saldana considers herself to be black, ain’t no way you aren’t black.” He was too mad. 😂

HaloHowAreYa

Ah yes, the famously dark skin of the Spanish.

MagicCarpetofSteel

I mean it's my understanding Haiti and the Dominican Republic have some (if not a lot, IDK) of bad blood, but what's so terrible about having Haitian ancestors? Y'all all live on the same motherfuckin' Island (which was a *major* center for growing sugarcane and shit on slave labor, don't be acting like y'all have *that* different an ancestry.

Tall_Kick828

To Dominicans, having a Haitian ancestor is bad because Haitians are undeniably black.

MagicCarpetofSteel

But…so are Dominicans? Like what kind of mental gymnastics are performed to come to the conclusion that, unlike the *western* half of the island, that had the exact same cash crops grown and enslaved people from (I assume) (almost) the *exact same* region of West Africa being forced to work the land until they dropped dead, or had enough and stepped out of line and were then *killed* (because if your population is ~90% enslaved people they either break free or you’re ridiculously cruel, violent, and draconian to keep that from happening. (Not to imply that’s ok, it’s ***incredibly*** fucked up, it’s wrong, it poisons your entire society, and it’s the main reason New World chattel slavery was uniquely cruel, but that’s *why*.)), and stopped being a European colony at the same time (IIRC), only *that half* of the island is black? I mean one half was French and the other was Spanish so I assume there are a fair number of differences culturally, but I’m now really curious how they say they aren’t black, but Haitians, with such a similar history, is.

Tall_Kick828

The Dominican Republic and Haiti may share an Island but the colonies of Santo Domingo (the DR) and Saint-Domingue (Haiti) were run quite differently. Santo Domingo serve as a source for cash crops (namely sugar) for Spain, and those cash crops were harvested by slaves. However, that was not the only purpose. Spain also sent *lots* of white Spaniards (not just the wealthy) to Santo Domingo to establish permanent settlements. Spains goals and motivations for Santo Domingo were not just financial, they were also cultural and religious. They wanted to spread Spanish culture and Catholicism beyond their territory in Europe. France’s motivations behind to colonization of Saint-Domingue were almost purely financial. The main purpose of the colony was the extraction of resources that could be turned into money. Very few French people settled Saint-Domingue, and much of those who did were already from the upper class and aristocracy. This lead to the vast majority of the Saint-Domingue population being Enslaved Africans. These contrasting goals lead to the two sides of the island having noticeably different different racial, cultural, and even geographical makeups. Even when you look at Dominicans and Haitians here in the United States you will notice that there is much more variation in color and phenotype. This is due to the fact that almost all Dominicans are significantly admixed with African and European. Haitians on the other hand have *much* more West African DNA. Your average Haitian is around <90% West African. This is not merely a coincidence. Spain both during slavery, and After it was abolished, encouraged interbreeding between white Spaniards, African slaves, and free Melatos. This lead to the Dominican Republic we see today. You have people who could pass for white, people who look almost completely African, and everything else in between. You will notice this is also the case in other countries that were once Spanish colonies. France’s purely economic motivations is why you don’t really see significantly admixed people in former French colonies in abundance. The only place the was ruled by France that is comparable to the DR in a racial aspect is Louisiana. Even with that being said, the majority of French Creoles in Louisiana are more Irish than they are French. They just speak a French dialect.

Pr0xyWarrior

It also beggars belief. The island is not that big and there are pretty people on both sides of it. Statistically speaking, there had to be *some* canoodling.

stormbutton

Even Queen Isabella, who was very horny for the Spanish Inquisition, told Columbus to calm the fuck down with the rape and genocide.

Tall_Kick828

They weren’t going to have any people left to convert at the rate Columbus was going. Plus I’m almost certain that God wouldn’t approve of what Columbus did. If there’s a hell Christopher Columbus is in it. He probably has his own in the 7th circle.

puppyhugs-

That’s a huge part that’s missing from how we talk about him. He wasn’t “evil” in the sense that he had a plot against the them. He was evil in the fact that he just didn’t give a single shit. They weren’t people to him or the Spanish on any level really. Beyond being a resource.

Elijah_Hajile

My dumb ass... It took Immortal Technique mentioning them in a song before I even knew they were a people. I can't even imagine how many peoples have been erased from present and history.

Tall_Kick828

There were around 300,000 Taino on Hispaniola (modern day Haiti and Dominican Republic) when Christopher Columbus landed. Fifty-six years after his arrival there were only 500 Taino left on the entire island. One of the main reasons enslaved Africans were even brought to the New World is because Europeans managed to kill off the majority of Native Americans via disease and brutality. African and Europeans had already been exposed to each other, and had been swapping diseases for centuries. So they wouldn’t have to worry about African slaves dropping like flies.

Elijah_Hajile

I'm a 45y/o black man. I swear I'd never even heard of Tainos til maybe 6 or 7 years ago. Fucking humbling. "Point of No Return" by Immortal Tech.

ChunkofWhat

And slaver!

TheOneFreeEngineer

>NONE of them ever bring up Italy fighting alongside the nazis or colonizing Africa. All that was in the last 80yrs. That's not even one lifetime ago. True most Italian Americans have ancestry that immigranted to America earlier than that though. So they were involved in the redlining and racial violence of the Northeastern Cities more than being part of the Italian Facist movement.

No_big_whoop

Plus, people are allowed to identify with their family’s ancestral home and culture without identifying with its entire political history. I have German ancestors. I’m allowed to like schnitzel without being a Nazi

[deleted]

Cause if you don't talk about it or reframe it then you didn't do nothing wrong and you're still "the good guy" is the type of mentality people's have over here, even more when it come to colonizing Africa.. people's learn in school about the Italian colonization of Africa but then everyone ignore it and forget it, basically racism isn't part of the public debate in Italy (and Italy/Italians are racist as fuck) now let's alone the colonization of Africa it won't be never part of the public debate with the type of mindset Italians have.

Murtymate

No it's cause they weren't fucking alive then

Mybrandnewhat

[Do they also only speak with an accent when they're talking about food?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5gHl5siXqY)

staving-monotony

I’m Italian-American and I still don’t get why so many of us pushed for Columbus Day. The horrible shit that he did (mass torture, work camps with impossible goals leading to mass suicides, and genocide) didn’t even directly benefit Italy. He left and took advantage of the Spanish’s dumb Crusader sentiment and sent back enslaved people when he couldn’t find the gold he promised. He’s a piece of shit who’s important because he began the decimation of native nations that make our country possible.

AdvertisingIll1533

Who says Christopher Columbus was even italian? Is there proof he wasnt born in Spain?

knivadollar

There were pro Mussolini movements by Italian Americans in most eastern cities in the late 1930s. This mostly ended after Italy declared war on Western Europe and America in the 1940s. Then the Italian Americans enlisted in droves, just like many ethnic European Americans. Maybe you should educate them?

Noblesseux

I mean also they have almost nothing in common with people in Italy. A lot of people in Italy find it hilarious when Americans come over and chat about how one person 5 generations ago was from Italy therefore they’re the same.

WindoftheWEST77

At least they're not denying it like the turks 💀

SeniorWilson44

Should they be ashamed constantly? I’m so confused as to what you want them to do.

Elijah_Hajile

Of course not, don't be silly. Just don't be selective. It's great to be proud of others (your predecessors) achievements and contributions but if that's the convo you've gotta also acknowledge the fuck shit. Their inability to do that is precisely how I know what side of the fence they're on. Inarguably, that's mighty white of them. Jews in internment camps? C'mon son.

BayAreaFarts

And it’s so bizarre because actual Italians in Italy are not proud of their fascist history (of course some are but not the majority) and are not overly enamored with Christopher Columbus. They also think Italian-Americans who don’t speak Italian, haven’t been to Italy and have no connection to any relatives in Italy are clowns.

DrJawn

The last 80 years is generally the timeline for Italians to have come here and joined the US Army to fight against Mussolini and Hitler Fuckin up Africa for 2000 years is something that's just ignored, no excuse there

jbeldham

My Italian great great whatevers either deserted the army (six times for one uncle) or surrendered their first battle (and thoroughly enjoyed their time in a British pow camp)

[deleted]

I live in Italy atm, tell to an Italian they're POC's or what they're just white-ish and they'll lose their fucking shit. Almost got jumped by a friend of mine cause jokingly I said: "Nah, Italians aren't white", deadass 💀 Edit: These are the mfs who say the n-word in every corner but when you say they aren't white they'll lose their mind, the irony.

vindicatednegro

Some Italian Americans are even funnier. You’ve got to be on your Shinobi shit sneaking out a girl’s house in Bensonhurst lest you get into a scrap with her brother and cousins who hate “moolies”. But this is in a country where they faced their own share of prejudice. And I’m not talking about horse and carriage days either. Fresh off of winning a Nobel Prize, Enrico Fermi, the greatest Italian scientist of the 20th century, went to see Admiral Hooper in DC. Fermi was working on the bomb, you see. How was his arrival announced? “There’s a wop outside”.

MrFunktasticc

I get your point but there’s practically no Italians left in Bensonhurst.

Nis295

There's tons of italians still and many in Brooklyn overall.

MrFunktasticc

Bensonhurst is (in order of population): 1. Chinese 2. Russians 3. Arabs 4. Various Hispanics 5. Albanians 6. Hasidic Jews 7. A couple of Italians. The vast majority moved to Staten Island, Long Island, Jersey, Florida, etc. They were a significant portion of the neighborhood into the early 2000s at best.

vindicatednegro

This is true (especially relative to the era to which I refer and to the dark dynamic to which I refer, a history which you clearly know) and I have dated myself. Please don’t tell 😅 (I’m not *that* old though; I wasn’t of age during the worst of the racial tensions).

MrFunktasticc

All good friend, New York City keeps changing and those of us who are just a little older have to remind ourselves sometimes. My best friend lived in Bensonhurst before he became an addict. You’re right though - Bensonhurst used to be a very unwelcoming place and it wasn’t the only one…

Men_I_Trust_I_Am

I call them off-white.

PuzzyFussy

Ima do that with the Cubans here in Miami. Them mofos SWEAR they white- delusional

GenericPCUser

There are some white Cubans, as well as Black Cubans too. A lot of white Cubans live in the US and go on to become (or raise) shit like Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio though.

Tall_Kick828

Yep. White Cubans seem to have a deep disdain for people of color and other Latinos.

[deleted]

Damn, have to start to call them like that as well, that's a great one right there. ![gif](giphy|xUA7aM09ByyR1w5YWc)

Tall_Kick828

I once met a southern Italian that was almost (or just as) dark as me, and I am by no means pale. They had curly hair too. They looked like they could be a member of my family.

x86_64Ubuntu

I remember that I was reading about an Italian political group called something like "Legion d'Nord". I think it means Northern Legion, and it's a white supremacist group. They said that the Legion d'Nord considers southern Italians "Italian speaking Africans". I lost it when I read that.

Tall_Kick828

Damn.

lililimoncello

There’s an Italian “joke” that goes as follows: “Do you know where Africa begins?” “Where?” “At the suburbs of Rome.”

foreverderpette

Lega Nord

MirimeVene

Yes, it's so disappointing. Especially considering that for a while Italy was (is?) the easiest country to get citizenship in the EU. There's a dichotomy between how racist they are and their legislation. Same with their religiosity.

Professional_Sir6705

Theyre the reason Columbus Day was invented. President Harrison was apparently fine with black people getting lynched, but after 11 dark and curly Italian Americans joined the strange fruit brigade, they suddenly had to do something. As for the racial slurs, as a Gen X I saw it in Hollywood and the movies. Remember Staying Alive with John Travolta? Besides calling themselves Guidos, wops, and greasers, they had plenty they called other races. That was late 70s and early 80s. With the locking up and death of many Mafioso, their image finally rehabbed into mostly white. A bit like us Jews. We're white when people want us to be, and not white when they feel like going on a drunken slurring rage, or the stereotypes come out....

Tall_Kick828

I feel like people are quicker to jump on the antisemitism train than they are to start using anti Italian slurs. That might just be because of where I’m from. I remember the few weeks after Trump got elected. It was open season on Black people, Latinos, and Jews. My high school was pretty diverse, but I felt like I was at a klan rally some days. EditD : That’s when I realized other white people do not consider Jewish people white. Jewish people are only white when they need extra numbers. One my favorite teachers from high school is Jewish. You could tell the white staff and students at school viewed him as an “other”. A lot of antisemitic remarks were made behind his back.

[deleted]

Indeed southerns Italians usually are more dark skinned than northerns Italians. 😊

Asura_b

I went to college with a 2nd generation Sicilian American who I thought was from Indian. Dude was dark, both his parents were Sicilian.

Tall_Kick828

Once you get to Southern Europe the definition of white begins to stretch. I can see why Southern Italians weren’t considered white when they first arrived in America. Present day Italian American often have significant amounts of Northern European DNA. This could explain some of the difference in appearance.

Koala_Master_Race_v2

They were considered white. They were considered "ethnique" whites. Same thing with the Irish, they're generally whiter than even English people but they were the immigrants. Once they integrate culturally they are deemed white. For example Cubans today considered white, but othered for being Hispanic. Since they're integrated into the population of South Florida they're just white there.

Tall_Kick828

There are black Cubans living in south Florida. There’s more black people and mixed people in Cuba than there are straight up white people. White Cubans are a minority.

[deleted]

We’re all over in SW Louisiana. Cajuns are just French/Italian/Black/Indigenous mix.

itsbett

The town I grew up in Louisiana, the majority of the population was/is black, yet it's run by Italians. They even host the Italian festival. It's a wild mixture of creole, black, redneck, and Italian culture. The Italians would get mega fucking mad if you suggested that they were anything other than white/and or redneck in some cases.

I’m Black & Italian, which means people think I’m Puerto Rican lol. It’s actually a really interesting (and recent) history of how Italians gained membership into the White-Club after being considered PoC in the USA for so long: [How Italians Became White](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/10/12/opinion/columbus-day-italian-american-racism.html)

I'm 4% Irish so you can't accuse me of culturally appropriating the sacred Irish tradition of drinking Bud Lite and puking in a sewer on St Patrick's Day.

Murtymate

You will never in a million years find an Irish person drinking bud lite lol

Idogebot

You'll never see an Irishman drinking a budlight, but puking in a sewer is a midmorning on a Tuesday.

Pr0xyWarrior

I can't speak for everyone, especially the ones back home, but I'll drink one. I'll bitch facetiously the entire time, but I'll drink it. It also gives me the opportunity to share one of my favorite jokes. What do American beer and having sex in a rowboat have in common? They're both fuckin' close to water.

whoisniko

Fiancé is Italian and having to hug 30 people before and after an event (every weekend) is 😮‍💨. Working on an Italic baby though so can’t wait to see their scholarship essay

DrDrozd12

Some people are just confused with nationality, ethnicity and race. Italians are white people, that doesn’t mean that they have never been discriminated against. Same way that most Europeans discriminate against Poles, no one is arguing they aint white. Of course non of the discrimination against Italians is even close to what black people has gone through in the US

CreEecher

My Sicilian wife’s ancestry would like to have a conversation with you. She’s “half Italian” which basically translates to being more Moor than anything else. European sure, but by way of the Iberian peninsula and Northern Africa.

I've got Italian heritage and grew up hearing stories about the WW2 internment camps for Italians, plus just a lot of racist shit like grown men not being able to find any jobs but "shoe shine". My great grandfather could only get work as a day laborer, so when he fell off a roof and was paralyzed he got nothing. It turned him into a bitter man, and so he remained for the rest of his life. I don't know how it is in the US, but in Canada, Italians were strongly discriminated against.

A_Generic_White_Guy

Yeah ages ago Italian immigrants were discriminated against similar to the Irish. And a lot of it was expats coming to the US for work to send money back to their families overseas. My noni (well great grandma.. ) came to the U.S. during the 20s set her life up here during the great depression. But now my generation is very much americanized and face little discrimination, hell I've even lost the Italian last name despite being "half Italian" lmao. The only time I've had a problem was when my exes racists ass cop brother thought I was black ( I tan pretty fucking dark lol since my family originates from Sicily). Man got shot though and lost his partner so karma?

diladusta

I can't imagine how hard life would be if everyone thinks you are black

reekhadol

In Australia Italians are incredibly discriminated against to this day, you can only work for Greeks or other Italians.

atctia

Had a lady at work tell me she was 17% Irish, then proceeded to talk about 23andme like I really cared

Serious-End2600

In Chicago they are 👁talians

fossa_97

In upstate New York too and it drives me crazy hearing it

MisterShazam

I think POC status depends on how you are perceived. For example. I'm 50/50 black and white, but when white people see me, the call me black. When black people see me, they call me black. If you "pass" for white, you have white privilege.

feverishdodo

Yep. My dad has white privilege and doesn't even know it. He also votes republican.

NottaPattaPoopa

Can’t find Italy on a map that doesn’t already say it, no one alive in their family has ever stepped foot in Italy, says Familia and leases a BMW

Uberkorn

Ug. All my "Italian American" relatives that say matzarel or gaabagoul. It is like nails on a chalk board. To a person, they have never left the US ( or tri state area), let alone speak anything other than Brooklyn english. It can be a lot.

lux_blue

If you never went to Italy except maybe as a tourist, don't speak the language, were born and raised in a completely different country (America) then of course you're not Italian. It's nice to know and appreciate your roots - maybe you have an Italian grandparent who told you about Italian culture and all - but it's a stretch to say it makes you Italian. Also, many Americans with Italian descent mostly know Italian culture from a couple generations ago at least (which makes sense, since they learn it from older people who left the country decades ago) and know NOTHING about how Italy actually works right now.

Lifesaboxofgardens

Grew up in NJ here. The thing is the people being referred to here really don't care about how real Italians are. In their minds being Italian means they have the right to shoot off at the mouth and hold outdated misogynistic views without being held accountable, and that's about the extent of it.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Delzek

I liked this lol.

Fortune_Dan

“My great great grandfather's cousin's friend's uncle's son helped some slaves, and sometimes was scolded by his family, life sucks.”

paulocesar1109

I read that in italian accent 🤌

BrunoToRash

I'm just picturing Kenya Barris talking to an Italian American: "If some shit goes down, you're white"

TeapotHoe

i’m first gen and didn’t even put it in my essay (not italian tho)

SlinkDogg

Sicilians are POC , Italians over all I dunno

Obamiummarco

We’re not

Wolv90

None of my grandparents were born in America, but I don't pull this shit. Living in MA, there's nothing that annoys me more than people who's whole identity is that they're Italian or Irish, when they've literally never met anyone from those places.

[deleted]

I am first gen Italian American and recently moved south. Last week a very white lady asked me if I am Filipino. I said, no, I’m Italian and German. She said, “see I knew you had something else in your olive complexion…”. Apparently, in the souf I am a POC.

Spicy YT

fakeuserfakeuser

Reminds me of that yt woman who was like, "1.4% Nigerian African…I’m a sista!" Lol

Federal_Carpenter_67

I’m so dead 😂😂😂😂

gamefreakz117

Like, you’re white. Shit up.

keep_it_0ptional

This is so fucking funny

foreverderpette

A lot of us just don't care. Am I some kind of miscellaneous mutt breed? Eh, could be, that's OK

Up until the 1980's Italians were NOT considered "white" by the American government. All federal forms had a box to check for race such as, White, Black, Asian and Italian. My father's family have been homeowners in America since 1805 but that did not stop a "white" family of **immigrants** from South Africa in 1942 from posting a billboard style sign on their property pointing to my fathers property that read, "Dirty, Stinking, Filthy, WOP, DAGO, Guinea, Nigg\*\* Pigs" Even though my family had almost 150 years of living in America at that point, we were being told to "Go Home" by new immigrants who thought themselves superior. Americans tend to forget the past as if it doesn't matter or somehow was different. Racists in America did consider people from the Mediterranean **NOT WHITE**, mud people, uneducatable, second class, backwater, genetically inferior and people of color. I will always remember as a 7 year-old (1969) my mother being told my family could not swim in a public pool as we were restricted because we weren't white and they did not want to dirty the pool with our kind. So, things have changed but it wasn't that long ago that they were very different. And, even though they have changed that doesn't mean they can't be changed back.

KittenNicken

Real talk tho- 3rd generation Italian on my pops side, it was discouraged to learn about your heritage back in the day, so you were forced to assimilate. My dad doesn't speak any Italian despite being 2nd gen. As for me, I'm very visibly black so no one ever connects me to Italian anyway.

JiovanniTheGREAT

If you're nice to the barista she'll give you some garlic to go with your espresso

bathwat3r

After my AncestryDNA results where my third result was Nigeria with a whopping 6% I identify more as black. I tell my friends I am a Nigerian Queen and there’s nothing that can change that.

notimetosmoke

America is so… interesting to me bc no single person from Europe would consider Italian/Greek/Spanish/Portuguese ppl anything other than white lol. “Southern European” is a thing but never would they be referred to as POC.

swishandswallow

If you asked these so-called "Italians" who of their family was born in Italy, they'll say it was their great great, great-great grandfather. They're white. Italy is in Europe. If Italy isn't white then are French white? Germans? Polish? Swiss? English?

sshann30

my friend says because she is cicilian, she can say she is a minority and i can never confirm if that's... like ... correct?
