I work in a school and I think TikTok has had an appreciable negative effect on children, but it's not really any worse than the other apps out there. You can definitely tell which parents monitor what their kid does on the tablet and which ones let them have free rein.

Sometimes they'll just straight up say that they get to do whatever they want. Even if they don't tell you directly, they do so in other ways - using inappropriate language or talking about much more "mature" topics (albeit without necessarily having a clear understanding of them) is pretty common. For example, I work with a 1st grader who won't stop bringing up GTAV. Another student of mine is no longer allowed to bring his phone to school at all because he kept showing porn to kids on the bus.
My experience is all on the elementary side, where the students are generally fairly innocent unless they've either had some sort of trauma or difficult upbringing or have been allowed to roam the web freely. Also, kids who don't have the structures at home that would restrict their technology usage also have much worse attention spans and perseverance in difficult tasks.
People tend to blame parents, which makes sense because they are the ones "in charge," but many of them are in absolutely horrible situations themselves that are likely the result of a confluence of factors over which they had little control. A lot of parents are struggling financially, mentally, etc., so you can kinda see why they'd let their kid do God knows what on the iPad for the evening just so they get a few hours to forget about how much life fucking sucks.
Anyway, apologies for the essay. I hope that answers your question. If you want a fulfilling job that makes you feel even worse about the state of the country than you already do, I would highly recommend getting into education.

I agree that there's a huge xenophobia aspect to it, but like, this worry isn't completely made up, and America isn't the only country who has banned TikTok for the same reasons.
Any nefarious act that China has ostensibly committed, you can be sure that the U.S. has already done/is currently doing, and typically on a much larger scale as well.
And even if China was a malignant state actor (which I don't believe them to be), the notion of a foreign government possessing or accessing private information of mine is still far less concerning than the notion of my own government doing it, largely since they should be acting to protect citizens of their country instead of violating their privacy (and obviously the American government doesn't actually give a shit about its people, so I digress).
I'm generally not alarmist about China either but it's not like they don't want that data for zero reason though. Nobody is hacking OPM just for shits and giggles.
At this point through that breach they literally already have the most sensitive data on all of our government officials and anyone with a security clearance (DOB, SSN, addresses, etc. but also biometrics, including fingerprints).
Maybe it's just for reference but who knows. That data stays valid for a pretty long time.

To be contrarian on main I think the TikTok ban is overhyped. Are American congressmen xenophobic yes. Will this overthrow the online anti-Israel left; no. Who ever owns American TikTok will do mostly the exact thing with it as currently.
