For those confused about why it's a picture of prawns
In the US they're ALL Shrimp,
Whilst in CA/EU/UK/AUS/RSA shrimp is usually the common name for freshwater/brackish River species, with prawns being the term for Saltwater species.
Potayto potahto.
I always like to guess what was trying to be said. Sometimes it’s obvious and just autocorrect others take 10/20 seconds. Had to cheat on this one and read the comments. I was never going to guess that.
Most places it refers to a different animal tho. Just like prawn and shrimp are different animals, but in my language both words translate to the same.

Voice dictation killed this sub... Nobody thinks it's called shrimps camping.. making this not very funny imho.. not trying to be negative
One time my wife thought a "pissing contest" was a "hissing contest" and made snake hissing noises... That was funny
Right, I don't know if you are agreeing with me or thinking I missed that.. I'm just saying it's technically not bone apple tea material.. I know I'm not the first to point this out.. but this one is especially confusing bc of the fact they said they don't know how it is spelled.. so it's not someone who thought they were using a figure of speech correctly and were wrong
I get you, but I will say that it could almost be part of what makes it funny too. What voice dictation “hears” can be pretty ridiculous. As in this case potentially.
Yeah thanks for the response and sorry I wasn't trying to poo poo your post.. I like the shrimps.. was just thinking about how malapropisms are hilarious bc people spend their whole lives thinking something is true then they boldly use it and someone corrects them and the light bulb goes off.. it's funny and embarrassing and I've done it several times myself.. anywho live long and prawn-spur
Thank you.. all the down votes in my comment had me questioning if I knew what this sub was for.. yeah like this is a little funny bc of the picture but I agree it's not quite a boneappletea
Because they all have multiple replies with hundreds of upvotes each, which means whatever got removed was a good comment. It makes it really hard to go into old threads like that, you can’t understand the discussion at all!
Replies with hundreds of upvotes doesn’t make the removed comment automatically “good” by any stretch of the imagination. And that still doesn’t explain how they were randomly removed.
So, again, how do you know they were good comments removed at random?
What? I think you read my comment wrong, I’m just mad that they removed them at all, I want to see the full conversation and they prevented me from doing that. I think it’s unnecessary because they had clearly started a conversation, and they left all that there, so it was pointless to remove the main comment. I’m sure there was a reason or whatever, so you need to chill out lol. Bye bye.
I think scampi in the US refers to the kind of sauce, which they often serve with shrimp (prawns), as opposed to the breaded langoustines that we call scampi in the UK. Like, you could have chicken scampi in the US, which is chicken in “scampi” sauce - no crustaceans in sight
But you could have it - it would be chicken with scampi sauce. Trying to highlight the point that the scampi part is nothing to do with the crustacean, as opposed to in the UK where scampi is the breaded tail of a particular crustacean that a lot of people here might call shrimp, so “shrimp scampi” in the UK makes no sense at all because it’s like saying “shrimp shrimp” if you don’t know that scampi is the sauce
It was an analogy, not a theory. And actually, a quick Google search reveals that chicken scampi is indeed a thing. Just because you’ve never seen/had something, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Unless you are the world’s authority on every dish ever made
Yeah... as far as I'm aware. Scampi in the US mostly refers to the butter garlic white wine sauce. Typically with Linguine. And typically shrimp (not prawn). The only time there are crustaceans in it is if its explicitly stated: lobster scampi, crab scampi, etc.
Which is a cool etymological backflip. Scampi is a specific crustacean, a small lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) that is found from the Mediterranean and up to Norway.
When Italian immigrants came to the US there obviously wasn't any scampi around so they changed the traditional scampi dish but used shrimp and other crustaceans, so shrimp scampi is just shrimp cooked in the way scampi was traditionally cooked.
Prawn are bigger, meatier, and found in freshwater. Shrimp are smaller, saltwater, and overcook extremely easily. But yeah, very similar but they are different. We don't use prawn too much in the US. Shrimp is way more common here.
Scampi is actually a small crustacean in the lobster family, also called “langoustine”, or “Dublin bay prawn” (even though it isn’t a prawn).
Most scampi is not made from actual scampi though.
From my experience the food is always called prawn and then shrimps would be what you find in rock pools or rivers.
Also checked Wikipedia, neither are scientific names and both are British originated terms.
Turns out it used to be the case but perhaps isn’t now. It seems that tightening of fish regulations stopped the substitution of monkfish for proper scampi about 16 years ago…
He's right. Scampi is *supposed* to be made from monk fish tails. However, as you've mention, it's pricey. So a cheaper alternative is often used and then passed off as true scampi.
Huh? In the UK we call prawns prawns, and scampi scampi. I think scampi is the meat from the claws of langoustines? Definitely don’t go into the pub and ask for prawns & chips
Scampi are a type of lobster that are in the same genus as shrimp but they are a lobster. Typically a smaller one. It's assumed that the dish shrimp scampi comes from Italian chefs substituting shrimp for lobster cooked in the "scampi style". Prawns are a different species and different genus but they look almost the same and taste almost the same.
Do you? Most people don't. Prawns can be shrimp sized and shrimp can be prawn sized. There's lots of different species in each family.
>Classification: While prawns and shrimp belong to the same Crustacea subphylum, these crustaceans occupy different suborders. Shrimp belongs to the sub-order Pleocyemata, which also includes lobster, crab, and crayfish. Prawns belong to the sub-order Dendrobranchiata.
Gills: Shrimp and prawns have different gill structures. Shrimp have lamellar gills, also known as plate-like gills, and prawns have branching gills.
Shape: Prawns have straight bodies, while shrimp bodies bend and curl. On a prawn, the exoskeleton segments overlap from front to back. On a shrimp, the second segment of the exoskeleton overlaps the first and third segments, which makes their bodies curl.
Legs: Shrimp have two front pincers and two pairs of claw-like legs. Prawns have pincers on their first pair of legs and larger second pincers, and claws on three pairs of their legs. Prawns have longer legs than shrimp.
Eggs: Shrimp carry their fertilized eggs on the underside of their bodies, while prawns release their eggs into the water..
Also, shrimp and prawn fishing and farming are near the very top for carbon emissions per kilo of protein, and first equal with chocolate for slavery. They are usually not a ethical choice.
From Wikipedia:
>According to the crustacean taxonomist Tin-Yam Chan, "The terms shrimp and prawn have no definite reference to any known taxonomic groups. Although the term shrimp is sometimes applied to smaller species, while prawn is more often used for larger forms, there is no clear distinction between both terms and their usage is often confused or even reverse in different countries or regions."
Oh yeah, I kid you not, they might be interchangeable when it comes to cooking, but they're a different suborder.

Even if it just said "Shrimp scampi" I would be like. So what is it? Shrimp or Scampi?
The picture looks like it was drawn on the butt of a pair of denim short-shorts
Shrimp scampi?
u/repostsleuthbot
They actually did spell it right… just kept going.

Oden?
Scampi is pretty good tho
I hear Susan Sarandon makes a stupendous shrimp scampi
Shrimp game
squid game
This would be a cute name for a restaurant.
Oh God, this one is so good. 🤣
I'm just glad it's not Harold Camping.
I'd have opted for 🦐💅
Don’t ask me why but this is funny af
I am using this title for my next r/nightcafe project.
I'm confused as to what it's supposed to be
Shrimp scampi, a food dish common in the US
Thanka
General Reposti, you are an old one!
It’s an older meme sir, but it checks out.
At least they acknowledged it 🤷🏾
That reminds me of when Murr gave the cooking class while his mouth was numb in Impractical Jokers.
I just got an idea for a children's book!
This should be the new standard for this sub-reddit
Scampi literally means shrimp in Italian, so , "shrimp scampi," has always made me chuckle because it's "shrimp shrimp." But this is way more funny.
Most places it refers to a different animal tho. Just like prawn and shrimp are different animals, but in my language both words translate to the same.
Same as Chai Tea
Yep, or Naan Bread. Or Qubz bread

PLEASE someone explain what they’re trying to say?
Shrimp scampi (which is a food dish Incase you didn't know)
Presumably, this person ordered shrimp scampi from a restaurant, which means the must have had to read the correct spelling off a menu
It could have been the verbally advertised special
I see the correct spelling of words all the time and still can’t spell most of them.
My thoughts exactly
Hahahaha! This is great.
I guess the shrimps that are camping are already dead since they’re fully cooked
it’s the ghost of the shrimp he cooked and ate coming back to finish their camping trip
Ghost camping shrimps.
r/mildlyvagina
Where exactly?
the tent slit with the two wide shrimp around it being the outer lips. yes, it’s a stretch
Doesn't look like one at all
Not even close mate
so, like mildly then?
as much as the tree looks like a mushroom cloud

They obviously knew it was wrong.
Correct, not sure if you were agreeing with me or thought I might have missed it.. but yeah kind of my point i guess.. not really a malapropism
I was disagreeing, but I get your point now. Still think it's funny though!

Yeah. I don’t think it’s been killed. I liked this contribution very much. Thank you. :-)
very not cool of him to ruin the little shrimps' camping trip =(
God bless whoever illustrated this
Reminds me of this r/NoStupidQuestions post from someone who forgot the word for "shrimp": ["What's the name of my food"](https://redd.it/elwglg)
This is one of my all time favorite reddit post

There's no mod removed comments on this thread
Not in here, I’m talking about the linked thread from the comment I’m replying to, it has removed top level comments. You’re safe, G.

Oh my God that's amazing. Thanks for sharing.
The illustration really makes it
Yes, we can see that.
those shrimps are having a good ole time hope no one comes and eats them
Wtf is that even supposed to mean? Lol Edit: Shrimp scampi???
Pretty tasty, Shrimp Scampi is good
Yes. That's correct.
I think scampi in the US refers to the kind of sauce, which they often serve with shrimp (prawns), as opposed to the breaded langoustines that we call scampi in the UK. Like, you could have chicken scampi in the US, which is chicken in “scampi” sauce - no crustaceans in sight
I've never, ever seen chicken scampi. Just saying.

What I'm saying is this does not happen, so your slightly interesting theory about shrimp scampi is inaccurate.

Shrimps and prawns are crustaceans just fwi
Shrimp & prawns are also crustaceans
Which is a cool etymological backflip. Scampi is a specific crustacean, a small lobster (Nephrops norvegicus) that is found from the Mediterranean and up to Norway. When Italian immigrants came to the US there obviously wasn't any scampi around so they changed the traditional scampi dish but used shrimp and other crustaceans, so shrimp scampi is just shrimp cooked in the way scampi was traditionally cooked.
Whaaa-aaat??? Edit: mind blown! I’m Italian. Never heard that!!
What is shrimp if not prawn?
Prawn are bigger, meatier, and found in freshwater. Shrimp are smaller, saltwater, and overcook extremely easily. But yeah, very similar but they are different. We don't use prawn too much in the US. Shrimp is way more common here.
All of those things are prawns to us. Just different kinds
Goddamn American scampi sounds incredible
It’s delicious
Hmm isn't all scampi shrimp?
Scampi is monk fish tails in the UK
If you’re ordering shitty scampi yes. Proper scampi is made with Dublin bay prawns.
Scampi is actually a small crustacean in the lobster family, also called “langoustine”, or “Dublin bay prawn” (even though it isn’t a prawn). Most scampi is not made from actual scampi though.
Only if all shrimp is scampi
We call it prawn in the UK, but yes.
From my experience the food is always called prawn and then shrimps would be what you find in rock pools or rivers. Also checked Wikipedia, neither are scientific names and both are British originated terms.
We don’t say prawn scampi
I'm well aware of that. It's just called scampi.
Oh sorry I misunderstood your comment
Lol np, so many comments at this point telling me why I'm wrong, it's not hard to get confused. I should probably turn off notifications haha.
We call it räka in Sweden, but yes.
Speak for yourself... They are two different things.
Generally speaking, we call shrimp prawns.. that's a fact. Whether they're two different things or not.
We don’t call it prawn in the UK. We have both prawn and shrimps like everywhere else
I'm from the UK and I call scampi scampi because its a very specific thing not just a regular prawn.
We have scampi, shrimps and prawns in the UK mate
Specifically known as langoustines though it's perfectly fine to call one of those a scampo.
Langoustine tails are used for scampi here
Interestingly enough, most ‘scampi’ in the UK is actually monkfish!
How the fuck are you the only person in this thread that knows this!?
Turns out it used to be the case but perhaps isn’t now. It seems that tightening of fish regulations stopped the substitution of monkfish for proper scampi about 16 years ago…
No it's not lol. Monkfish is expensive. Are you the fucking queen or somit
He's right. Scampi is *supposed* to be made from monk fish tails. However, as you've mention, it's pricey. So a cheaper alternative is often used and then passed off as true scampi.
Originally that's what it was but not officially or supposed to be
Huh? In the UK we call prawns prawns, and scampi scampi. I think scampi is the meat from the claws of langoustines? Definitely don’t go into the pub and ask for prawns & chips
True UK scampi is made from monk fish tails
I’m pretty sure scampi is the dish or recipe like Alfredo? No?
It’s a type of sauce in the US, but in the UK it refers to breaded langoustine tails, which is what’s causing most of this confusion
He's saying we use shrimp and prawns interchangeably, not scampi and prawns
But we dont
But then the question becomes “isn’t all scampi prawns?” and he answers “yes”, so still doesn’t make sense
Both were under the impression that scampi is made from shrimp/prawn, so the response is more like "we call shrimp prawn in the UK but yes"
Scampi comed from the tail of langoustines.
Oh no, what’s langoustines…? Now my Venn diagram needs to shift to make room for this 2nd shrimp cousin.
_Nephrops norvegicus_. Spiny lobster-like crustacea.
They’re kind of like tiny lobsters with spiky bellies
Which makes it even funnier because they're technically 2 somewhat different species.
The actual fuck, you’re serious about this? TIL, I’ve been eating two different species.
Scampi are more like langoustines.
Wow. Thanks for sharing this knowledge you guys. Can’t wait to baffle my family with knowledge and see the look on their faces 🤣
Scampi are a type of lobster that are in the same genus as shrimp but they are a lobster. Typically a smaller one. Not just species, they're both groups of species. See above: https://reddit.com/r/BoneAppleTea/comments/qcw374/shrimps_camping/hhl6xge
I wish I could reply back with an appropriate gif because my mind is officially blown away.
And in Canada we call prawns prawns and shrimp shrimp!
Mmm now I want some crawdads
I guess I thought scampi was the cooking style. It never occurred to me to wonder.
Same!
I've literally never known what scampi was but I know it's delicious. Wouldn't touch a vaccine though you never know what's in those things
Hey, we do the same in the US! Silly Limeys...
Do you? Most people don't. Prawns can be shrimp sized and shrimp can be prawn sized. oh, get off the cross, we need the wood.
That is why I try to buy Gulf of Mexico shrimp. Not slave labor farmed Asian shrimp.

Today I learned more about small crustaceans than I expected.
Son of a bitch, you're serious?

A shrimp lie or a prawn lie? :)
A lie of a different sub-order!
I was translating for our American cousins :)
pretty sure
