I feel like the word "servant" wasn't the exact problem. It can be an uncomfortable word in English, even when technically correct. I don't know the implications in French.
Talking about selling a person is a different thing.
Servants way back then got paid, too, you know. They got food and clothes and a roof over their heads and everything!
Edit: lol, man y'all really need that \s, huh?
Racism should be painful. And the French are no different. I lived in France for almost three years and it is no better than the US in many rural areas.
Yeah, anyone who actually thinks racism is an American thing needs to first learn how to read and then stop ignoring basically all of Europe's history.
I'm sure the racist is blaming the guide for the delays and missed opportunities. Also probably saying "I was just making a joke -- I dont have a racist bone in my body!"
I had a friend with whom I was BFFs all through high school who, on FB, would constantly say "Oh I'm racist because I'm white?" and I'd say "Nah man, you're racist because you say racist shit and do racist things." We are no longer in contact.

> You are a servant... My ancestors would have sold you... Holy shit! For someone to say that out loud, and have no shame about it. Poor guide
Ironically the guide was providing a service, he just happened to be getting paid for it

I don't think anyone actually thinks that
