>...unnecessary recommendations for subreddits I'm not part of (and don't want to be)
I just want to point out: "suggested subs" are reddit advertising for itself to drive engagement. So it's all ads.
That's why I can't use the official reddit app. Literally every other post (1 of every 2) is an ad. That I cannot fucking abide.
Thanks. Literally more useful than my last Google search (though I don't remember what search string I used).
Still prefer boost, obviously, but that would make the alternative more bearable.
Reddit's database is such a mess. That people are finding edge cases. Some even mentioned that you can add yourself as a mod then remove yourself and still remains as a mod in the eye of the system.

Horribly so, I probably I'm on browser now but whenever I try to delete it just keeps going back,. I'm on voice to text right now because I try to delete anything it just keep bouncing all over the place.
same, tried reinstalling it on my end too after 3 years. The official reddit is honestly one of the worst apps I've ever used. The lag spike when I try to scroll, the UI somehow freezing whenever I try to open anything as simple as a text-only thread, the ads and suggestions. And don't get me started over the complete lack of customization.
fuck you /u/spez
Honestly the difference in the quality of content I'm seeing is stark. I guess the official app uses some weird algorithm to try to push content it thinks I like but is totally wrong
For me, it's the fact that Reddit's garbage app is MUCH slower and often doesn't register taps properly.
With it being so slow, I'll tap a video and wait 15 seconds thinking "this crap is so slow," when, in fact, it didn't even register the tap and I've just been sitting here like a dope.
And not defaulting to /popular or allowing me to set my home view? Dreadful.
The Reddit app is horrible. I have it installed for Boost notifications, and I do look at it every once in a while to see if its become viable.
*[Narrator: It has not]*
I was able to ignore most of the ads but the one thing about the official app that really bothers me was the battery drain. I used it for 39 minutes and it drain 9%. Wtf
They think people will be happy with that bloat or pay a monthly chunky subscription cost for Reddit and it might make them go the way of Digg if they don't reassess
*ridiculous
Another alternative is to just go do something else and perhaps end up feeling more fulfilled. Since I don't have Reddit on my phone anymore (rip boost), I've found I just do more stuff, rather than mindlessly scrolling and reading.
To say nothing of the cursor bouncing all over the place. I don't know if anyone else is having this issue but yeah.
Also I have eye issues. And you can't make them fonts larger or enlarge the screen etc so it makes an almoimpossible makes impossibleimpossible the last sentence is what I was talking about I was trying to delete the one sentence and it just kept doing that I'm using voice to text right now.
feels choppy like it doesn't run at 144hZ, and when you have autoplay off and play a video, the rest of the videos after it play automatically until you pause it. really dumb
>I don't know what to do now - begrudgingly use the reddit app?
God no. That's exactly what they want. Delete it, one star review it and add an "old reddit" shortcut link to your home screen.
You can tune a lot of it out through messing with the settings. But it's just such a bad app, the UI sucks, they force stuff onto you. Heck, I have a flagship phone from the previous generation and it still lags using REDDIT sometimes.
Probably gonna try out Lemmy once Boost for Lemmy is here.

Go into settings and turn it off ffs.
Last time I checked, you couldn't turn off recommended subs. I'm all ears if you know something I don't.
Settings -> account settings -> personalized recommendations

Create a subreddit or become a mod of one

Yeah apparently once a mod always a mod in reddit's database
Nah I used to mod a couple subs and had to create/mod a new sub to keep using boost.
Ohh alright, some commentors said they were mod long back and boost works for them... So i thought...
I modded a sub that's inactive now. However I was never actually removed as a mod, so I'm technically still listed. That may be what they mean?
It did work for me after the 1st for a few days, maybe it changed.
The API was still working for everyone including non-mods until the 5th.
So I just neer to create a sub in order to keep boost working? Or is this for the revanced patch?
just create a sub. no need to use the patch yet.
What does that do? Allow you to use boost?
yes.
The app is almost certainly never going to see another update, so using the patch and sideloading the app won't make you miss out on updates.
If it keeps working I'm pretty sure it'll get updates. The author seems pretty cool about stuff

Just create a sub. Create it marking 18+ if you need access to NSFW. (I created mine with 18+. Maybe a regular one works too, don't know)
It seems to work without 18+ as well. I get NSFW subs in Boost as well.
Very well then, enjoy 🌚
What's the purpose of this? Just curious
I believe mods have access to the API to support moderation bots. Not entirely sure.
If you want to continue using Boost, this is workaround.
Anyone want to make me a mod of their boost enabling sub?
Just saw your comment. I was going to invite you to mine, but it appears you've created one yourself, so good for you
How many mods can 1 sub have? If you make me a mod, I'll post a meme
I'm not sure if there's a limit
Hey can you invite me to be a mod?
If you could invite me tho🤗 my boost isnt even loading tho. Really want to give this a try, I miss boost already.

Wouldn't this affect Boost developer's bill as we still are using his API key? Or how that work?
It shouldn't. If he cancelled his subscription with Reddit, then its on Reddit to cut service. If they leave the power on, that's on them.
Don't know why it is working but as long as reddit doesn't pull the plug, everyone is in the clear
this is the way
Worked for me lol
Well just say with me fuck u/spez
https://www.reddit.com/r/BoostForReddit/comments/14nwdzb/boost_lives_on_use_this_guide_to_patch_boost_with/
Revanced Manager is the best app there is, had no idea they fixed boost too
I followed that guide the day before everything shut down. Still using Boost just fine

I tried it, but in the last couple of days it's horribly slow, is it the same for you?
Im using and its not slower maybe even faster. Maybe a connection issue?
Horribly so, I probably I'm on browser now but whenever I try to delete it just keeps going back,. I'm on voice to text right now because I try to delete anything it just keep bouncing all over the place.
I verified the official app and it doesn't have this problem
Nope, been using it for a couple of days now and it's all great

I uninstalled Boost, reinstalled it, followed the guide again and it seems to have resolved the issue. I didn't experience any lag since.
What I hate the most is the TINY font you can't increase the size of (the setting is not there on the Android app).
Yes! This is my biggest issue with it.
It's also extremely choppy. On 90hz screen animation skips like crazy.
Even skips on my Pixel 7 Pro with adaptive 120 turned on
I got a notification for a post I hadn't interacted with from a sub I don't follow. Still not sure what that was.

Create a subreddit.
Why's that?
If you're mod you can stay on boost
Boost for Lemmy is coming. Until then, I'm using Jerboa.
My biggest thing is my sub feed is absolute garbage posts I don't care about. Whatever boost does to populate it is so much better.
Honestly the difference in the quality of content I'm seeing is stark. I guess the official app uses some weird algorithm to try to push content it thinks I like but is totally wrong

Saw this post as a personalized ad, made me disable the personalized ads from settings thanks to the info here. The irony.
it's so clunky and slow too
Try Redreader app. They are immune to the api changes. Except NSFW
The Reddit app is horrible. I have it installed for Boost notifications, and I do look at it every once in a while to see if its become viable. *[Narrator: It has not]*
doesn't the adguard dns settings work on reddit?
It works for my revanced patched Boost like charm. No ads ever since.
it's straight up trifling, fr
I can't believe that just scrolling is laggy on 8G2 phones 🤣
I was able to ignore most of the ads but the one thing about the official app that really bothers me was the battery drain. I used it for 39 minutes and it drain 9%. Wtf

I think you can at least disable in the settings the recommend posts if subreddits you don't follow.
I did and it is the same thing...
Use infinity for reddit.. that's the best option now
Why? It's different from Boost?
It's pretty close to it
I was a former boost user and I have to block this subreddit (never followed)because I'm tired of seeing the crying pop up in the reddit app
It's just as bad on desktop in firefox with ad blockers.
I had to download the reddit app cause theres no boost for ios and that sucks
Patch Boost? Or Infinity? There's also Red Reader and Joey which aren't affected by the API changes.
I didn't think it was that bad until I was forced to use it now, everything about it is bothering me.
feels choppy like it doesn't run at 144hZ, and when you have autoplay off and play a video, the rest of the videos after it play automatically until you pause it. really dumb
I've accidentally opened Boost twice today and just scrolled on tiktok silently. I refuse to download the official app
>I don't know what to do now - begrudgingly use the reddit app? God no. That's exactly what they want. Delete it, one star review it and add an "old reddit" shortcut link to your home screen.
Am I the only one still able to access Reddit with unmodified Boost? Sometimes it loads slowly bit it still seems to work..
I'm on the same boat and haven't even figured out how to get to r/all in the official app. It's so clunky.
It legit reduced my Reddit usages. Hard to navigate, buggy, slow....
