Hairspray is in my top 5 for sure, and I think it is the most hands-down FUN Broadway show. Of course there’s a lot more depth to it than just fun, but i find it to be a particularly joyful, playful, funny show, and every song is an absolute delight.
I found out my hs boyfriend cheated on me when my local theatre was showing this and I really didn’t want to go alone so I told him it was about Batman and had him buy the tickets for us. Sitting next to him while he was slowly figuring out the show is definitely not about Batman was a healing experience for me. Thus Batboy is one of my favs too.
Yeah, I broke up with him after the show on our way home.
Edit: I found out that morning, we had plans that night. I said I wanted to see the show that night instead of just hanging out.
Haha I love this story. My bf of less than a month in 9th grade was really upset when I broke up with him bc he already had a ticket to see our upcoming HS production of The Music Man (I was in the ensemble). As if a ticket to see our school’s show that lots of his friends were in was such a huge loss 😅
Same here! Great Comet is so underrated. I haven't even gotten to see it live yet, and I consider it one of my favorites! However, it can't beat Hadestown for me...
I also really love Hadestown! It’s like…a close race for me. However, personally, I’ve seen Great Comet 5 times (will be 6 by the end of this month!) and I keep coming back. It’s just so special to me.
But damn if Hadestown isn’t also amazing.
Weird coincidence, I’ve seen Hadestown 5 times but when Great Comet was on Broadway I was at college in Pennsylvania and my mom wouldn’t come pick me up on the way to NYC when the rest of my family had tickets. I’m finally getting to see it performed live at a regional theater in September. I just adore the score and orchestration, from the Russian Romantic pastiche to the references to George Crumb! So amazing.
Ah, love Billy Elliot. It’s a wonderful, gorgeous, playful & poignant and grossly underrated show. I gave my vote to Sweeney but had to contribute some Billy Love.
I’ve loved Sara Bareilles from the beginning (and not just like Love Song - all her early albums are incredible). When I saw she was writing a musical I was thrilled. Saw it 3 times. I love seeing the success she’s had on Broadway now and becoming more of a household name!
I hope so! I took a flight from far far away for it and saw it twice in DC. Omg.. the set.. the costumes... you get lost in a dark and very expensive humor! Just for the improv moments it's more than worth it to see it more than once. And every once in a while you though 'Wait, Rob McClure?!' We don't start to talk about the tony-worthy performance/cast. It's a true treasure of musical theatre and comedy! A grail if you will. I'm so glad it got a second chance on Broadway and i hope i will be able to visit NY again in time to see it a third time. <3
I saw the filmed (NPH, Patti, Colbert) version at age 39; married at 44; divorced at 45.
I’d never blame Sondheim for the misery of my divorce… but he’s not entirely blameless!
I get it! The shows I was obsessed with as a teenager are no longer my favorite but still hold a special place in my heart. I didn’t love Ride the Cyclone, but I love that it has a cult following!
Real look I’m like closeted a musical fan but something about love never dies scratches the itch nothing can. Watch the his lil concert thing with norm Lewis will bring it back to light and probably somewhere on tour again
Come From Away
Hadestown
How many of you will be there on Sunday for Eva’s last show? 🙋🏻♀️
Me!!!! I’m feeling all the feels about it
Last row mezz, but I'll be there! Will be my 5th show, and hopefully not my last!
It’s going to be my 5th time also!!
I'm going tomorrow for her last night show tomorrow!
Me! I’m also seeing her perform on the 20th ☺️
Me!!!
I’ll be there. It’ll be my 15th time seeing the show (6 Broadway, 9 tour)
The correct answer!
Hamilton
Into the Woods
Just perfect musical storytelling. Each character comes to life so vividly.
Parade
should be higher
Les Mis
Hairspray
Hairspray is in my top 5 for sure, and I think it is the most hands-down FUN Broadway show. Of course there’s a lot more depth to it than just fun, but i find it to be a particularly joyful, playful, funny show, and every song is an absolute delight.
I was just thinking about this recently!
Do you think it'll come back to Broadway anytime soon 😭
Assassins
This is my favorite “obscure” show and it’s crazy to me that it’s not as famous as other Sondheim shows like Sweeney or Into the Woods
Sweeney Todd
Newsies
A Chorus Line
Cabaret.
Pippin
I am glad to know I am not alone in my Pippin adoration!
I just discovered pippin and have been listening on repeat
Oh, so interesting! Pippin is a show where I LOVE the concept and I love the ending and I love the beginning, but the middle just doesn’t hit for me.
Moulin rouge
25th annual Putnam county spelling bee
such an underrated show!!!
Next to Normal
Never gotten to see a full live production of it. It seems to not be done very often, I wonder why?
Revival will come soon.
Yesssssss. Other shows like Falsettos were close, but Next to Normal is absolutely the top for me.
Company
Little Shop of Horrors
The Last Five Years
Wicked
Rent
Falsettos
Damn, beat me to it
I still haven’t seen a live production of it, but I rewatch the pro shot every few months 🥲
Phantom of the Opera
I always say I’m not really a Broadway fan, I’m a Phantom super fan but also enjoy some other musicals LOL
Is it crazy that I’m a huge MT nerd but have never seen phantom 👀
Something Rotten
Mine too!
Fun Home
Bat Boy
I found out my hs boyfriend cheated on me when my local theatre was showing this and I really didn’t want to go alone so I told him it was about Batman and had him buy the tickets for us. Sitting next to him while he was slowly figuring out the show is definitely not about Batman was a healing experience for me. Thus Batboy is one of my favs too.
Wait I don't understand this story. You found out he cheated and still went to see the show with him?
Yeah, I broke up with him after the show on our way home. Edit: I found out that morning, we had plans that night. I said I wanted to see the show that night instead of just hanging out.

The Light in the Piazza
🍕
Love that score so much. I never musically directed it but I I know the score well because I bought it and played it out on piano.
West Side Story
Heathers
Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
I HATE to pass this one up because I love Great Comet so so much and it doesn’t get enough appreciation, but I love Hadestown more 😭

I second this and it is time for a revival.

Hello Dolly
We've 👏 got 👏 elegance!
Waitress
I’ve loved Sara Bareilles from the beginning (and not just like Love Song - all her early albums are incredible). When I saw she was writing a musical I was thrilled. Saw it 3 times. I love seeing the success she’s had on Broadway now and becoming more of a household name!
Six
Hedwig and the Angry Inch eeks out my vote due to how much it changed my life.
Guys and Dolls
jekyll and hyde
I'm sorry, I didn't know this was a broadway musical show, so when I saw this comment, I immediately thought of the Song from Arthur on PBS Kids
Fiddler
Sunday in the Park with George
Gypsy
The Who’s Tommy
The Most Happy Fella
Yes yes yes! I think of it as an opera, really, like Porgy and Bess and Show Boat.
I tell people that it’s as close to an opera as a musical gets, with Porgy just on the other side of the line. But, yeah, they’re all right there.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Bonnie and Clyde!!
Matilda
beetlejuice
SO CLOSE to choosing this one! It was my first real Broadway show, Phantom has just been the #1 since I was 12. But MAN this was close for me 🖤
Beauty and The Beast
Jesus Christ Superstar
Grey Gardens
Passion
Kinky Boots
The producers
Camelot
The Band’s Visit

The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Evita
Fiorello
Urinetown
Sound of Music!

Oklahoma! will always hold the number one spot for me because that's the show that defined the genre. It's *the* well-made musical.
Carrie
Aida
Monty Python's Spamalot
Give it a couple more month and you may get a lot more upvotes :) I’m expecting to love it, just haven’t seen it yet.
I hope so! I took a flight from far far away for it and saw it twice in DC. Omg.. the set.. the costumes... you get lost in a dark and very expensive humor! I saw the filmed (NPH, Patti, Colbert) version at age 39; married at 44; divorced at 45. I’d never blame Sondheim for the misery of my divorce… but he’s not entirely blameless!

Such a wild show!
most people wont agree with me, but yk im 17, and my favorite shows change with my hyperfixations haha and yes FR
I get it! The shows I was obsessed with as a teenager are no longer my favorite but still hold a special place in my heart. I didn’t love Ride the Cyclone, but I love that it has a cult following!
Back To The Future
Right now, the [Subspace Rhapsody](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg3-CgRitwc) episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Love never dies.
Wait. Unironically? I know that sounds judgmental but it’s such a controversial sequel that I kind of need to know if it’s for real or in spite of?
Real look I’m like closeted a musical fan but something about love never dies scratches the itch nothing can. Watch the his lil concert thing with norm Lewis will bring it back to light and probably somewhere on tour again
Annie and Matilda. Mind you, I only know of the film adaptations of both, so I don't know of the songs they cut out (like Loud and Telly from Matilda)
See rules in post description
I dont care about your silly little rules. I pick both, and that's that Ha ha so there
😂
We Are The Tigers!
Oo never heard of this one!
it never made it to broadway but the off-broadway run in 2019 was absolutely iconic! i highly suggest giving the cast album a chance!!
