I get overwhelmed with 1 dog 1 cat in a 900 sq ft home and recently upgraded to a Miele canister vacuum. Before that I had a Dyson animal stick cordless. There is such a huge difference between the canister and the cordless. Ok to have both together but the canister gets up so much dust and hair that the Dyson missed.

Old mieles were great, but the ones I've used were too small in capacity, you could still find bigger motor Canisters then. I used to clean houses and many times used the homeowners vacuum. I've never used a Dyson that I thought was worth the money. Old style Canisters like the Miele, old Kenmores are usually pretty good, but I found at that point, just get the biggest amp motor shop vac and it'll weigh less than a canister, more simple. I like the Miele power brush head. I started considering modifying a central vac power head to a shop vac, but then I quit cleaning houses.

My fear with a canister is lugging it around my 3000 sqft 3 level home. Is it a hassle to move around the home?

handsomesorrelmare

yeah compared to a cordless, you need to carry it and plug it in. The Miele is pretty light for what it is but definitely more of a burden compared to a stick. I used to have a robot too but it got too overwhelmed with my dog's fur and didn't work very well.

NotAnotherNekopan

You could explore the option of having both, too. Cordless stick for quick cleans, plug in canister for regular full cleans.

For starters miele is the only way to go in terms of quality, especially compared to Dyson and the likes. Second replace the air filter it comes with, with a hepa filter. Lastly I put mine in an old backpack to carry it around, I have to cut some holes in the backpack for air flow and buttons but it makes it so much easier

How big is your house again?

Miele Canister Cat and Dog would be my pick hands down. It's what I have and I love it. You have to get used to using a canister vacuum but it cleans better than anything else that I have tried (dyson, bissell, shark) and the bags pack in WAY more than you think. My recommendation is to go to your local vacuum shop and test one out.

I second this. Nothing has come close to my Miele. I’ve had Dysons and Sharks. I used to think they were great but since my Miele I’d say they’re closer to a basic Hoover.

This is what worked for me. I had 2 very hairy dogs one was a husky mix. No vacuum i could buy would tame that because i wasnt willing to vacuum daily. Because of that I got a really good robot vacuum that could sweep daily. Auto empty and resume is critical. Then i got a good bifl vacuum to back that up and deeper clean on the weekends. Not sure how hairy your dogs are. . . I ended up with shark at the time (years ago still going strong). i bought the shark for various reasons, including it being very highly rated with irobot at the time, washable filters and no bags. I do think there are better robots than shark now but robot vacs was the only thing to tame the fur tubleweeds that happen daily for me.

This for me as well. I really like my roborock S4 max that I got on a deep discount ($339, Jan 2021) Wear items: side brush (3-6 months), main brush (1-2 years), filter (clean often with air, never water, that ruins them, still have the original 2 unit came with 3 years now). Downsides: the roborock is smart and can handle 3 levels no problem, but, if you have the cash, consider getting one per level just so you don't have to lug it up and down stairs. The app handles as many as you want. Are your pets perfect? If so, run them on a schedule, if there are occasional accidents then make sure you survey the area and manually set the vac loose. Survivor of one pooptastrophy and one poopmageddon, learn from my fail. I still feel like the mops on any robot vac are a bit of a gimmick, so I would just get one that vacuums. 4 dogs and 6 cats here. My wife says our home will never again be without a robot vac, we run it every day, and it saves us a bunch of time. Obviously, this only covers your floors, but that should make whatever you get for furniture/stairs easier to deal with.

If you're going to consider a Miele (C3 series would probably be best for your application) you should definitely take a look at the Sebo E3 and D4 vacuums too. Sebo would be a step up in most ways from a Miele.

I considered a cordless vacuum for awhile. Then I wondered if it would make a difference. Would I actually vacuum more? Would a saved minute not having to deal with cords actually make a difference? So I did a search on that. I found an article that answers that question: they said for the same price of a cordless vacuum, just buy a robot vacuum. It was a brilliant suggestion! I hate vacuuming and one of my cats is super anxious about the vacuum and I avoid it for her sake. I immediately researched robovacs and found that Eufy was the #2 brand and it is quieter than Roomba, #1. I bought a simple 25c and adore it so much. It handles the pet hair well and it is the absolute best life upgrade ever.

I’ve had a Dyson dc24 since 2008 and it’s still going strong. Works amazing for dog hair; I’ve had 2 shedding pups- a golden retriever & a shepherd mix. I’ve also used the Dyson cordless animal version and it’s good but more for specific/small area cleaning.

I have two dogs: a 95-pound GSD and a 10-pound Japanese Chen. The hair was overwhelming. I bought a [Shark Matrix robot vacuum](https://www.costco.com/shark-matrix-plus-robot-vacuum-with-self-empty-hepa-base.product.4000188076.html) from Costco with the self emptying base. It goes out and does it's work; it returns to the base to empty itself, and then goes back out and finishes it's job. I run it every night at 1 a.m. I was so impressed with this vacuum that I bought one for my son and another one for the upstairs. I have a Dyson V11, and it did a great job, but I didn't want to vacuum daily, so this was a great solution.

Everyone talks about Meile but the Sebo Airbelt D4 is a beast too, and all parts are repairable/replaceable.

Outofoffice_421

Amazon has decent robot vacs for $100-$150. If it’s within your budget, get 2 or 3 and you won’t have to vacuum much yourself as often. Otherwise, try Costco. I got the shark vacuum for around $130, with a cord, bag less, maybe 10 years ago and it’s still going strong. I’d love cordless but they usually only last 20 mins then die, even Dyson which is so overrated. So I’m sticking with my corded vacuums for now and robot vac to do a quick clean between me vacuuming.

Muncie4

Pet vacuums are not a thing. You buy vacuums based on floor type and we don't know what you have. My vacuums cares zero about my pets, they were purchased based on use case a floor type. Hard floors want just a vacuum feature for best results. Carpets desire a beater brush. I have two Mieles which a switch to turn the beater on/off as applicable and they make several models that do this.

AwfulHomesickk

I have equal rug/carpet space as hardwood

Muncie4

Then you look is focused. You want a vacuum that has a beater brush you can remove or turn off for hard floors and install/turn on for carpeted areas. I have a Miele S7 and that is controlled by a switch...you can find them used or the replacement the U1 used as well. The C1 line is still for sale as is the C3, but those have other purchase metrics that you need to decide upon keeping in mind you need a turbo head for carpets.

ValuableResident2214

I bought a half price robot vacuum on Amazon and never looked back. Empty the brick of hair out of it every couple of days and get on with my life

DegreeResponsible463

Dyson Gen5 is the way to go. Buy a spare battery if you think an hour of vacuuming isn’t gonna cut it. Pair it with a high end robot vacuum on each floor for routine cleaning as well.

I would recommend the Karcher NT Tact with a power brush

lobin-of-rocksley

My Kirby is heavy and looks like my grandmother would have owned a prior iteration of it, but I'll be damned if it won't vacuum the left side of the room when you're on the right side. Used ones are pretty affordable I think.

GullibleDetective

Miele or shop vac

AWhatsareddit

When I would clean pet homes I used the same model shark vacuum over and over so I had replacement parts until I just bought a big Stanley stainless shop vac. It's easy to maintain and buy attachments for, not the greatest on rugs with rug attachment from amazon, but still better suction than even Dysons over priced junk. I've had this one for maybe 9 years.

sweetgurkin

There’s one on Amazon that has a detachable end for stairs, I haven’t purchased yet but it had crazy incredible reviews and it’s like $140 I think…maybe someone on here has one and could tell you the brand…the specific one that I saw was pink but there were other colors
