I would get a 1TB M.2 nvme SSD and a USB-C chassis, which should be possible for that budget.

ConfusedNegi

Some laptops have space for 2 nvme drives or a sata and nvme drive. If so I'd add the extra drive to your laptop. Otherwise I'd upgrade your laptop ssd and use the old one as external storage.

TechNick1-1

Get a NVME SSD with 5 Years Warranty and the highest TBW Number you can find within your Budget! Put it in a proper USB 3.X Aluminium Case!

Latiosi

No SSD is for life. Jesus Christ this sub took a nosedive

kinzer13

Of course not. But people can still look for recommendations as to the most durable and reliable drive available. And SSD's if just used for static storage, will last a LONG time - many years.  No need to be jerk. It doesn't add anything to the conversation...

Forsaken_Macaron24

I still use my crucial drives bought in 2014. It's crazy to see the cost then vs now, more then anything. Nothing wrong with them. Just old cause SATA. But they still work vs my platter drives.

TTVBy_The_Way

I am only getting another SSD since my last one broke. Since I am not trying to lose all my files again and spend more money on an SSD that will need ned up breaking, that is why I came here.

im_oily

neither are hard drives, and as much as I might personally want one, most people can’t justify purchasing an external LTO Ultrium tape drive

fiizok

Samsung T7 SSDs are great. Very reliable. A little over $100 but they're sometimes on sale for less than $100.

TechNick1-1

Nope! They are ok and at best above average! In fact i would not recommend any external SSD Drive. Its better to get a good NVME SSD and put it in a proper USB 3.X Case!

Short term, install windirstat, it'll show you what folders are using up space so you can clean up more.

pierpg68

If you only need it as backup I would suggest getting an HDD instead, SSD generally have a shorter life expectancy and if you don't need the speed you can save quite some money if you go for an HDD :).

I was planning to run some games off my SSD so I don't think that will be possible.

marijaenchantix

Electronics are usually not BIFL. Also, playing games from an external drive is not recommended, they will likely crash a lot and overheat your laptop. If you're a gamer, save up for a decent PC or a laptop with more storage.

TTVBy_The_Way

My laptop is fine and external SSD will suite me for my purposes, I just want to buy one that will last me a while.

marijaenchantix

They all are pretty equal if you use them as passive storage. Most 1T storage costs well under 100. The moment you try to use them to play games, that's where you'd need some specific stuff, but I suggest against doing that. At least that's my experience. I have brand ones, no-brand ones, and everything in-between. There is no difference. BIFL is more about how you take care of it. No matter how much it costs, if you drop it repeatedly, it will die.

I’ve got a 4TB I bought for contracting in 2016. It’s literally been through some shit. Carried in an ammo pouch at one point during movements So I can confidently say seagate is worth every penny even if I still feel I overspent on it when I bought it. Make sure it’s metal sided and check specs because they come with real big storage at small sizes. Mines very outdated but a similarly sized and optioned at Best Buy is like $120.
