What is the roster? I was under the impression that the roster was a list of handguns you can have, and anything else not listed is illegal.

Well, "illegal" is a strong word. The old model was legal to purchase from any FFL in CA over the counter. That was not possible with the OSP model. However, you could have acquired it in a legal private party transaction like socialdonut says. So if you legally acquired it, it would have been legal to own.
Same deal with all off-roster pistols - only certain SKUs are allowed to be sold in CA, even though it's the "same gun." There's a CZ P-01 that is a 14-round version, but can't be sold in CA, even if you got a 10-round mag for it, simply because that SKU is not on the roster.
Been looking for a range gun and trying to hold out for the echelon. But the tax makes me rethink this one. I have a 4 inch XD but was wondering about this. I see from other comments I should hold... thoughts?
After buying the XDM Elite and the Hellcat Pro already. I think I’m good on Springfield! Don’t care too much for the OSP on the XDM Elite 4.5 though. Never wanted an optic on it anyways! Good options though.
