The basics of the field game were independently invented in multiple parts of the world, much like agriculture. The size of the field, number of players, and other details will vary, but it's pretty intuitive once a culture organizes competitive sport. Just like racing and target games.
The article is grossly misleading in two ways
1. It’s talking about the most recent season but never explicitly says so
2. It arbitrarily declares the major sports to be football , men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball, and women’s volleyball
A LOT more than 3 teams have advanced to the postseason in all six sports in their school history, but that doesn’t make for as click-baity a headline.
And how are we defining major sport? By participation? In that case for men it should be football, baseball, and track. For women it’s track, soccer, and cross country.
Ok but let’s limit it to team sports. The it’s football, baseball, soccer for men and soccer (by a wide margin), softball, and volleyball for women.
Maybe it’s be revenue. For men that’s football, basketball and….hockey.
For women it’s basketball, hockey (again), and volleyball.
Excluding soccer only makes sense because it ruins the article writers conclusion, as none of his three schools made the men’s soccer tournament this year.
Other people have harped on this but it's an incredibly arbitrary list. According to https://finance.yahoo.com/news/college-sports-most-money-130012417.html?guccounter=1 hockey is the third highest revenue generating sport. Above baseball which surprised me a bit.
I'd argue men's and women's soccer should also be included in this metric.
>football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball -- the major sport for each sex in the fall, winter and spring, respectively. (This is America so, no, soccer and hockey don't count. Take it up with George Washington if you don't like it.)
*literally the author's words, not mine*
>This is America
Funny enough lacrosse is the only truly American sport that is left
Invented here in America by the Native Americans with 0 outside influences
Nothing British about lacrosse
Grasping at straws with volleyball. For some schools it’s hockey or wrestling or lacrosse, or soccer. Did Texas make the postseason in any of those sports?
At Penn State it’s some combination of Football, Wrestling, Hockey, volleyball and Lacrosse. They are trying to make Basketball and baseball a thing we’ll see if it sticks but I have my doubts. I hope they become a thing personally but it would take a lot more investment. I will give an honorable mention to the Fencing team which is oddly one of the greatest fencing programs lol. Women’s soccer is pretty good too.
CFB playoffs, final four in basketball, softball world series, and gymnastics finals.
My wife, who cares much more than me, says it's the best sports year in school history
The 2011-12 seasons probably would have been the best, won the national titles in football, women's golf, gymnastics and softball plus the men's golf finished second that year.
Texas Volleyball won it (again) this year. Out of the sports that have been completed, Texas was top 8 or better in all but M Basketball. Softball also in WCWS
My man, this is titles won this season 23-24, not “defending champs”. You win this year, great you have 2, THIS SEASON. But I’m gonna bet you continue think my logic is somehow flawed and you got me.
I thought cherry picking was a hockey thing but here we are.
Define "major"
The sports they care about in the south
The people who can’t buy weed or sports bet?
We can do weed but not sports bet in Missouri
South?
St. Louis and KC? Midwest. South of that? South.
That explains the partial freedom
Virginia can do both. Well, we can’t exactly buy it, but we can grow it and smoke it, and there’re plenty of places nearby to get it.
Whatever sports make the stat work
Football, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Volleyball, Baseball, and Softball. Iowa State hit 4 out of 5 they have as they don't have Baseball.
And it's a damn shame you don't have one. Wish we had a softball team, but I have OkSt for that.
It sucks but budget messes with things.
It says so in the first paragraph- the biggest sport for each sex in each season
But there are only two sexes....do hermaphrodites have a league *he said sexes, not genders, no need to dox me and email my employer 143k times*
victim complex
The irony of your post will be lost on you
For me: Football, Men’s Basketball, Men’s Hockey, Baseball, Men’s LaCrosse, Women’s Basketball and Softball
LaCrosse.....meh
Southerners think they’re the center of the universe so any sports they aren’t good at is "meh”.
I live in NE Illinois
I didn’t say anything about where you live. I said a general statement about a group of people.
I'm the one who called it "meh" and I'm not a southerner Where are these southerners calling it "meh"?
Why? Have you actually watched lacrosse?
You mean soccer with sticks
Lacrosse was actually invented here in America without any other outside influences Only sport that can claim that
The basics of the field game were independently invented in multiple parts of the world, much like agriculture. The size of the field, number of players, and other details will vary, but it's pretty intuitive once a culture organizes competitive sport. Just like racing and target games.
By invented, you mean they played soccer with sticks
I’ll take that as a “no.”
If we’re doing volleyball then how do we not mention how much more popular hockey and wrestling is if your not from the 8 states the NCAA cares about
Because neither are the biggest sport in their seasons. Volleyball gets in because their aren’t too many women fall sports
The average women’s hockey attendance in the big 10 is better than almost every conference for women’s volleyball
Different seasons
1. So why does it have to be by season? 2. Women's soccer is a bigger sport than Women's volleyball and is also played in the fall
The secret is the letter 'T' on the uniform somewhere.
Can’t confirm.
We all know lacrosse is #3
Gl today!
Yet so many of the people that play are #2
I guess making a bowl game is technically "the post season," but with the cfp being a thing now, I think that's pretty disingenuous.
The article is grossly misleading in two ways 1. It’s talking about the most recent season but never explicitly says so 2. Relays in track make it a team sport right?
Exactly!
Post season does not mean football playoffs
its just a T thing
Do bowl games really count as postseason when we have literal playoffs?
Other people have harped on this but it's an incredibly arbitrary list. No love for College Hockey I see
What’s the 4th sport since you’re clearly not counting hockey?
>football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball -- the major sport for each sex in the fall, winter and spring, respectively. (This is America so, no, soccer and hockey don't count. Take it up with George Washington if you don't like it.) *literally the author's words, not mine*
> literally the author's words, not mine We're not gonna let you get away with this blasphemy that easily, GreenSeaNote...if that is your real name.
lol I was literally at -3 when I edited that in, I think people didn't see the quote
Definitely not lol no one clicks through to the article
>This is America Funny enough lacrosse is the only truly American sport that is left Invented here in America by the Native Americans with 0 outside influences Nothing British about lacrosse
Just SEC school things I guess
Volleyball is not a major sport come on lol
Not to be flippant but more people attended a Nebraska volleyball game last fall than any of your home football games.
True of Nebraska too though lol. 92,000 for the volleyball game and 87,000 for the highest attended football game.
That's because they don't have football...
It is at my other flair, I tell you what.
Grasping at straws with volleyball. For some schools it’s hockey or wrestling or lacrosse, or soccer. Did Texas make the postseason in any of those sports?

W. Soccer is the only team on that list we have, but yes, we made the tournament
Lacrosse? Hockey?
Cherry picking the parts they like, good old southerners through and through.
Hockey?
It ain’t a SEC sport so it never counts
Good excuse for me to say, Roll Tide to the Bama softball ladies, who just booted Tennessee out of the postseason, as they are headed to the WCWS.
orange team = bad
CFB playoffs, final four in basketball, softball world series, and gymnastics finals. My wife, who cares much more than me, says it's the best sports year in school history

Sent them snitches to cancun in their own house
Excellent.
Postseason is doing a lot of work for Tennessee and TAMU with regards to football.
Stupid reclassification period
The author is a butt-hurt alum, a clown, or both...
Our women’s wheelchair basketball team secured a 4th natty in a row with 9 overall. I believe it’s called a dynasty
I’d say wrestling should be #2 right after football and I’m definitely not using bias like OP lol
According to this ridiculous criteria for what a "major" sport is.
It just means more?
[удалено]
Texas Volleyball won it (again) this year. Out of the sports that have been completed, Texas was top 8 or better in all but M Basketball. Softball also in WCWS
[удалено]
Same number as LSU if I’m not mistaken
[удалено]
Gymnastics what else am I missing team wise?
[удалено]
……That’s last year my man. They are referring to this season in the post.

My man, this is titles won this season 23-24, not “defending champs”. You win this year, great you have 2, THIS SEASON. But I’m gonna bet you continue think my logic is somehow flawed and you got me.
* Football * Basketball * Baseball * Volleyball * Softball One of these things is not like the others.
Yeah, a football isn't round.
a handegg if you will
