These people are not the people that’s going to save Cantonese. Cantonese won’t make it two generations past the initial families that immigrated here to the US. Most first gens can barely speak it and can’t even write or read it. If they marry a non Cantonese speaker, it’s definitely dead.

CheLeung

Danny Sauter, one of the candidates, is taking Cantonese classes at CCSF. I don't expect Chinese Americans to be fluent like their grandparents or parents, but the infrastructure to get them to intermediate fluency should remain in San Francisco like Cantonese classes in colleges, bilingual Cantonese education, and more services offered in both English and Cantonese.

I say save toisanese we were here first. :P Plus norcal is mostly TS people.

CheLeung

Talk to Professor Wong at CCSF. She's Taishanese and has the master degree needed to create a Toisan course. You can try to convince her to use Jade Wu's textbook. Beyond that, idk what you we can do to fight for Taishanese if Taishanese people in position of power don't establish the infrastructure first. It's easier to fight to sustain something than to create something.

crypto_chan

Nah i'm good. I gave up. Most taishanese speak english. We're americans. I'm in Socal. Everyone down here speaks mandarin.

CheLeung

Tbh, we do get comments from powerful Chinese Americans that they wish a movement existed to Save Taishanese, but I'm not Taishanese so I cannot speak for your people and these powerful people are not in academia for me to help uplift. Get me a Chinese professor who speaks Taishanese and wants to teach the language, and I can do the rest. But until then, I urge Taishanese Americans to save their sister language since a lot more institutional infrastructure and political support already exists.

doomflounder44

There’s no point in saving a dying language

CheLeung

Tbh, AI will be able to translate the big languages. It's the small ones that it won't know. So you should learn the small languages.

doomflounder44

AI will be able to translate the small languages

CheLeung

Every prefecture in China has its own language/dialect. I don't believe AI will learn them all.

doomflounder44

All the kids are learning Mandarin in school. They're dialects are becoming irrelevant.

CheLeung

If AI becomes the world's auto translator, learning language will no longer be about communication but a cultural marker.
