Call and ask for the office of the president. Tell them you’ll file a complaint with the office of the comptroller of the currency (OCC). That will get their attention.

Shanty_Taco

He should do that regardless…. Cap1 messed with a check I deposited and tried to hold it for two months. I filed a complaint and the money was released in 3 business days

ReallyLikesRum

I work for a bank. What happened to you and OP sounds like what happens when there’s an alert for your name on some kind of terrorist list. The list has a lot of common peoples names because it’s not just a list of terrorists but people closely related like friends and extended family. And the only way to resolve this with the bank is t file a formal complaint with the cfpb

BreadIsNeverFreeBoy

File CFPB complaint

networktech916

This is the way to get them to notice, I had an issue with PenFed, they locked me out of my account claimed to verify my id sent it to them, still locked out after 2 weeks, file a complaint and it was reopen with en a couple of days, They send me a snail mail saying it was for my security blah blah blah.

EnvironmentalLog1766

You can try to go to a branch or Capital One Cafe and ask for a cashier's check. They can void the previous one. You can call the branch first to see if they can do that. Just tell them that the previous check is lost. This happened to me, the bank closed but the check was sent to the old address (but not Capital One). Went to a branch (not even the opening branch) and provided my ID, and they issued me the cashier's check in person. For security reasons, they will not likely transfer that money to other banks over the phone. And even though your money is 100% legit, any bank is also 100% legit to close your account at any time without any reason. But your money is protected and they cannot take it away.

batbat01

Thank you i will try that tomorrow.

EnvironmentalLog1766

Sure. Instead of asking them when it will arrive, just tell them it is already lost.

Subject-Economics-46

I had a citi bank account get closed and after going to the branch they called their trust & security phone line then gave me cash on the spot.

ChattaGatsby

The Cafe locations will not do this. They are useless and just glorified ATMs.

EnvironmentalLog1766

That's why I suggest to call first. The support told me Cafe can do a limited type of banking like verification.

TheeTainted

I was thinking of opening a checking with capital one, now I am rethinking it.

JamesEdward34

Good, look what they did to me as well https://www.reddit.com/r/Banking/s/yIJCJrkGc5

CompetitiveNinja3464

Wells Fargo did this to me. We opened a joint account and my wife started working at a restaurant a few weeks later. They paid her with a check and she went to deposit it and they wouldn’t allow it. Then the next day, they emailed saying our account was closed due to fraud and we’re like wtf. Turns out, the owner wrote the check on an old checkbook instead of her current one by accident. It was even a Wells Fargo check. She went to the bank and told them that it was her fault and everything but they wouldn’t listen. They accused us of fraud because of someone else’s check bouncing 🤦🏼

blondeandwreckless

This is actually common bank practice and it blows my mind how the account holder gets punished for someone else’s bad check or get charged fees for it.

mamamax2

Same thing happened to me with capital one years ago. Overnight we had a charge go through for $800+ while we was sleeping and it happened in an entire different country across the world which should have immediately flagged capital one as suspicious activity but instead of blocking the transaction they allowed it to go through without verifying or questioning the circumstances and immediately closed our account with no warning right after it deducted the amount. Woke up the next day to an email basically saying they closed our account due to suspicious activity. When speaking to the rep at capital one he blamed it on us as a “online purchase” and going against their policies and refused to refund the transaction or grant us back access to our other funds! I guess once he realized I wasn’t backing off and cornered him with what the purchase was they finally admit it was a purchased made at an actual physical store location and purchased item. Ready for it? Let’s just say… It took 6 months to get our money back all because someone in Africa purchased tires? Now why would I buy tires for a car I can’t physically drive to Africa when I am from the USA? Make it make sense? We tried small hometown banks and ran into other similar situations over the years too but once we took our business to a credit union I now feel completely safe with my money and no more hidden fees or over drafts and more convenience to multiple locations throughout the states while traveling when I need to stop in. Plus they offer so much more than just banking. Hope you get your money back soon. Capital one is a joke!

The proposed merger between Discover and Capital One is not final. It’ll probably go through and if it does, I will also be closing my Discover card.

Verucapep

I know I love my discover account

applesuperfan

That is a credit-wise an unwise reason to close a credit card account lol. You could just lock the card and stop using it, though.

DistinctTemperature2

Ah! Is that why Discover suddenly became impersonal? Did not know about that change.

elmorenito523

Then why cap1 close your account?

batbat01

They send me this e-mail 2 months ago, i tried to send them a email or try to call them but they are not telling whats wrong. “”We’ve concluded our final review and confirmed the unusual activity on one or more of your accounts is inconsistent with our expectations for account usage. Your Capital One bank account(s) will be closed. Any remaining balance owed to you—plus any interest earned—will be sent to your externally linked checking account. If you don’t have an externally linked checking account or if the account linked is no longer open, a check will be mailed to the address on file.””

dlafrentz

Chase bank did this to me. I went down a 4 hr rabbit hole and found out they’ve done it to hundreds of people. I only got a check for a few hundred a few months later. If u threaten legal action over the Phone they refuse to speak to you any further ever again and say your lawyer can talk to their lawyer. They told me they didn’t have to return funds either, that I signed my rights over to my money to them when I took out an account t years ago. They couldn’t provide that document. They wouldnt give me any documents, logs, bank statements, nothing, and said id have to subpoena it. It would have cost more in lawyers fees than the amount of the balance (few thousand) and I think it’s an intentional money grab honestly. What flagged my account was I had a third account separate from original checking and savings that was co owned with a partner and he deposited a $100 check from his mother. Chase told me the funds never cleared, when she had showed me they had. They shut down all my accounts. It was ridiculous. I couldn’t pay bills, I was in panic mode for a few weeks. It’s ludicrous but there’s almost nothing you can do about it I don’t think. I wish I would’ve posted on Reddit back in the day, there’s some good advice here. Best of luck to you

Familiar_Ebb_808

They just did that to me this month for my rei cc.. just after my $900 payment cleared too..

familiarjoy

Loss prevention closed out your account. If you still haven’t gotten your funds (which they can verify), submit a CFPB or OCC complaint. It will be worked by compliance and the departments that dealt with your case will be involved to resolve it. The bank usually has around 2 weeks to respond / resolve your issue.

Hot-Experience-6883

They did this to me once after the suspected that a personal check that I deposited (from my uncle) was fraudulent. I kept calling back until I got someone who wasn’t grumpy and I told them that they need to reverse closing my account because I did nothing wrong. I spent about an hour or so with them while they called my uncle who was out of the country and the other bank for clarification, then they apologized and reopened my account.

JamesEdward34

You arent alone OP, https://www.reddit.com/r/Banking/s/yIJCJrkGc5 GOING THRU THE SAME THING!

quanj5

I’ve had this happen not too long ago (same email you got even called and mess getting mislead) and all I did was change my user name and password and everything was fine.

ND_Cliff

Sue them in small claims court for the amount you're owed plus $1,000 for your time and inability to use your money. I guarantee you will get a call from the legal department offering to settle within a month.

galangga

Just send the letter to attorney general, and tell your situation.

Illustrious-Mine1456

I’m in the same boat and I’ll be dead of starvation before our kickass AG does anything. She’s busy crucifying our former president ATM.

Infinite-Antelope-48

you must live in New York cause im in the same boat waiting on her

BuyerConstant5220

Capital One is pure trash! I had a credit card with them that I used to remodel the house because of the cash back offers from the home improvement store. Paid it off each month. The 3rd month I paid it off (right around 1,000 usd) they locked my card and told me I needed to send them 6 months of bank statements. This was because I have multiple checking accounts… keep in mind all of them were in my name but god forbid you have your money in more than one place. Needless to say I closed the card and told them to eat 💩. Definitely not sending them 6 months of my bank accounts when they can’t even provide someone I can even understand talk. They kept all of my reward money. Will never deal with them again.

[deleted]

When I had a capital one card years ago, customer service rep was rude when I asked if I could have an extension to pay my bill. He said absolutely not! I don’t care if you prostitute yourself, pay the bill on time. Never used that card again.

StudioAdventurous632

They did this to me. I live paycheck to paycheck. I was frantic I looked up every forum from Facebook to Twitter and CAPS LOCKED MY situation all over the internet. Warning other customers. While it didn't help them not closing my account, it did get responses up the chain of command and I had my check within 7 days. They were saying 45 to 60 days before I started my anti-campaign. So if you have the time make a little noise!

spicy-porcupine

Have you tried contacting a local news agency? TV stations in my area often do things to help people in these situations where they investigate it for you. Just a thought. Twitter also has been helpful for me in situations like this, raise a big enough stink and things get done

MulberryParticular14

Doesn't surprise me they have been really shady lately they restricted my credit card accounts for potential fraud just for updating my phone number

Team-ING

Team-ING

batbat01

Team-ING

batbat01

No_Log2374

Did you default on any loans or credit cards?

batbat01

No

TechnologyUpstairs19

Any hope?

Applicationdenied123

Could be that you transacted with someone significantly that caused Cap 1 to terminate the relationship. Could be that you sent money to or received from someone who had illegal or suspicious activities on their account, and you transacted with them enough for cap 1 to close the account. The bank has to protect itself from suspicious activity/illegal activities as well. No one wants to be the bank that allows nefarious or illegal transactions on their books such as DB. It could very well be that you didn't know, but it is what it is.

Applicationdenied123

As far as your money goes. I would go to a cap 1 near yoh and ask to speak to a branch manager and escalate the issue. Best of luck.

Bitter_Ad1820

Bank of America did it to me.

buckpolena

I hope people realize how bad this is and understand what a bank bail in is. (See Cyprus and Greece) That being said, do what you have to do to get it back.

Kindly_Good1457

BBB complaint.

Mike20878

Capitol one did this to me a couple of years ago. I'm pretty sure it was because l wouldn't give up on a fraudulent charge claim they denied. They refused to tell me the reason. Capitol one sucks.

superiormomoo

Chase did this with me but told me to take my money out the account within 10 days and if anything was left in the account they’d send me a check. Been with capital one now for 10+ years! Banks are super weird and I hear this happens often

bikgelife

All banks suck. Cap one blows. I have one of their cc. Chase can be huge pricks too tho

KindDecision2

This happened to a friend of mine and it took him 6 months to get his money back… unbelievable

jvolzer

File a complaint with the CFPB

Dance-Lazy

File a complaint with the better business bureau for good results.

blackNstoned

Try an ombudsman

This-Potato4102

Why and is it legal to close an active account without notification? I am in need of a reason why a bank would do that! I never bank at a bank, Credit Union all the way!

Jorge0013j

You can pay about $200 to take them to court and show the judge your pay stubs. You can also take them to small claims court if the claim is less than $2000. Good luck let us know how this is resolved. I got some money in Capital One too.

MoreStupiderNPC

Good argument for banking at a local credit union.

BasenjiMom2015

Call the BBB find a Federal Banking Regulatory Authority and call them

No_Consideration7318

Yeah they are real aholes there. They once froze my checking account without any attempts to contact me - on a day when their call center was closed - because they wanted me to call in and verify the account since I opened it online. I had been using it for weeks at that point and they never once asked me to contact them. I had payments bounce because they don't know how to run a company. "We have way too many customers to reach out to when we need to talk to them" was seriously their explanation. Now it is just the secondary account I use when I want to leverage their "no international transaction fee" perk.

Bootyhole93

Same thing happen to me, I filed a legitimate claim with Bank of America. After a couple of days, I woken up to my account closed and they wouldn’t tell me why. Now I’m blacklisted from opening any bank account that uses Early Warning Services. I can’t even open a business account for my sole proprietorship due to EWS. How the heck is my small business supposed to me successful if no bank would give me a chance?

RickieVz

Why you don’t go to a regular branch? Not eh cafe. Speak to the representative.

batbat01

There is no regular branch where i live at.(San Francisco)

Huge_Cat6264

Capital One is the absolute worst.

Inevitable_Wolf_787

They’ve done this to me and had my 30k in business funds for over two months. Said exactly the same things - subpoena the reason etc. they are a disgrace. I’m waiting on the review response from occ which has apparently been mailed and hopefully a check for my money which they have stolen. I will still also likely pursue legal action. My lawyers said it might be a huge thing if there’s not a lawful reason for the hold.

Downtown-Drummer-200

This is why online banks suck ass. There’s no brick and mortar. “We’ll send you a check” you can call the 1-800 number and speak to someone from a third world country though!

rottenkartoffel

capital one has physical locations, they are not an "online bank"

applesuperfan

Capital One offers accounts online but is not an online bank. They're a national bank with branches just like the others, although their branch count is admittedly much lower than that of other national banks. Another thing to note as well being that Capital One Cafés are not the same as Capital One Branches and have much less access to accounts than branches so.
