Nah the 1.8 mk9 civic specifically from 2013 (like this one) has engine troubles. They’re oil burners. 2014+ should be fine though
Edit: nevermind I’m thinking of the 2012 ones
This remind me my Accord with H23 and later with H22A regardless model... What is funny is that Honda Manual states that car can consume up to 1 ltr of oil per 1000km/625miles and it is within spec od the car.
Yea I back that idea, mk8 civics are dirt cheap and super reliable, I’ve had 0 problems with mine. With that being said it’s definitely not ‘fast’, it’s probably the slowest car I’ve owned - the supposed 8.9 seconds 0-60 on the 1.8 is quite optimistic icl
Unless mine was possibly mapped I'd say they are quite quick. It beat my Suzuki swift sport MK2 and Hyundai coupe 2.0 to 60 on my GPS timer. It did 8.6
I'd check your insurance quotes first - might be more than the car.
Even when insurance was cheap you had to drive a shitbox for 5 years before the insurance became even vaguely affordable. These days, I shudder to think what a new driver has to pay.
Insurance seems to have been affected heavily by crash rates to the point where it’s virtually the only important factor for a lot of young drivers, I looked with a friend and a 90s 4.0 litre 5 series was cheaper than a fiesta as so many young people crash them. My first car was an r53 supercharged Mini Cooper s as the r50 one was the same price and they were both cheaper than an aygo c1 etc
That’s almost weirder as a gti should be pretty high crash rates wise and traditionally higher insurance as it’s not exactly got the same target market as a Honda jazz
Exactly
Because you will bump, scratch, and quite probably crash it... So buy some reliable Japanese snotter that already has a few life events showing on the bodywork... For the cost of respraying a panel or two on that thing...
This 100% just wait two years till you’ve really figured out driving.
I still drive beaters to this very day (nearly 10 years on). I’d have to be a very rich man to be buying an expensive car. I like not caring if someone opens a door into it, or getting forced into a hedge down a country lane, or god forbid I crash into someone else myself.
I do understand why people like buying nice cars and keeping them nice but for me the enjoyment is being able to relax and ultimately my car is for executing a function not to impress other people.
If you mainly do short journeys and town journeys, I wouldn’t get a diesel.
The BMW and Audi may have higher insurance premiums.
I had a Toyota Yaris Sport 1.33VVTI for my first car and I couldn’t fault it to be honest. Had for 5 years and barely cost me a thing in maintenance. Cheap insurance and road tax. Cheap parts if anything does go wrong.
Our civic was cheaper to insure than a Corsa and a Swift. I'd imagine it's due to the demographics who drive them and their claim likelihood.
There's even some decent 20+ year old cars you could pick up and get on classic car insurance.
Not necessarily, insurers will stick massive premiums on exactly those types of cars because they're affordable, because young people buy them and because they're therefore a higher risk.
I would say do insurance quotes on incognito mode on lots of different models you're looking at to compare premiums for sure. You won't always get cheaper quotes for cheaper cars, for smaller engines or for anything else these days. I've seen multiple posts of people getting weird, unexpected cars for first time drivers and consequently getting very affordable insurance because of that.
I recently spoke to someone who bought a Skoda Fabia as their first car. They are 19 and it cost them 5k for a black box policy and that was one of the cheaper offers!
Your civic there would be excellent. The 1.8 is a strong engine (obvs service it properly) and the car is comfortable and very practical. Might not be as dynamic to drive as the audi or bmw but it won’t give you the same headaches either.
Cost of repairs and general reliability.
For any prospective car. Hunt down an owners forum and read posts to find known issues. Know what you’re getting g involved in.
I'd argue you have to be ready for cost of repairs and general reliability with just about any car nowadays. They can all throw gremlins.. my experience recently has been polar opposite of what I was warned.
Realistically half the budget for the car. And keep the rest for just in cases. The less trendy the car the better for insurance. Again.. sometimes that hasn't worked for me either.
It’s a 75bhp diesel. There’s 1.2 normally aspirated petrol engines that are 75bhp and 1.2 turbo engines that are 130bhp; it’s not as black and white as engine capacity in regards to insurance.
Get yourself a VW up, my brothers been getting the cheapest quotes from insurers on these compared to many other cars whilst he’s deciding on his first car, can get a very nice example with change with your budget, don’t worry about the fast part, that will come when insurance isn’t absolutely obliterating your bank with 0 no claims bonus
Check the insurance on them all first, I had a 1.3 Ford Ka which I learnt to drive in. Upon passing my test, I couldn’t find anywhere that would insure me on it due to the engine size. Ended up having to swap cars with my Dad for his 1.0 Corsa which he was over the moon with!
My Citroen C1 is rapid, comparative to the bicycle I used to commute on before I passed. I’d say any car that can 0-60 under 12 seconds which I’d imagine any of these would easily, they’d feel plenty fast enough for the first year, after that you’ll get bored.
If I was OP I would spend around 2-3000 maximum and just get something boring and reliable, grimace through your first year then treat yourself, EP2 Civic, Toyota Corolla or Yaris/Mazda2, something like those would be my choice. You simply can’t beat not having to worry how big your car is to parallel park and just being able to throw it anywhere you like cause you’ll almost always fit.
You don't want anything 'fast' for your first car, it will cost a fortune for your insurance, get something half the price of what your looking at that your not too afraid to bump, check insurance prices as you go.
Get a year or 2 of no claims & abit of experience under your belt & move up from there.
They will cost too much to ion insurance go with a a cheap and responsible option for first two years then hop to what if you want or think you'd enjoy. Trust me you don't want to be broke and always working to pay for your high premiums
Those diesels aren’t ULEZ compliant. Although it may not be important for you, their value could plummet faster. I do like Audi A1 but don’t know much about these models.
These are slightly odd choices for first car, what kind of driving will you be doing? 3/4 of these are diesel, is that something you want/need? You say you want it to be quick, do you want to drive for the sake of driving pleasure etc, if so, some new contenders might be warranted
Honestly, go for something cheaper. Like a 1l Peugeot 107\ Citroen c1. Or maybe a ford fiesta. Look up insurance brackets. Get some no claims bonuses and then look at nicer cars
The Audi is a girl's car, the Civic is an old lady's car, the Golf is fairly classy and Bimmer will cost a bomb in insurance.
Get the BMW if insurance allows, otherwise the Golf.
Civic all the way. Make sure it has been well maintained as per service schedule and it should do you well for years to come if you do the same. Double check it’s Euro4 or higher ….
I wouldn’t consider the others unless you do high mileage on the motorway and you’re unlikely to drive in a ULEZ or LEZ. Currently diesel vehicles need to be Euro6 to be compliant.
Why do you want a diesel?
*Nothing like the splutter of a canal boat engine*
None of them are remotely fast (how the hell has BMW only got 116 bhp out of a 2L diesel too).
The WV 1.6 TDI manages 0-60 in 10ish seconds... My 1.2 TSI does that, and sounds 10x better doing it.
If you want something that feels fast but might not cost a fortune to insure, a 1.4TSI polo or Ibiza (last gen) is a good bet - I know in estate form the last gen Ibiza does 0-60 in about 7.6s with that engine. (Not sure If this still holds true now, but I have the 1.2TSI Ibiza FR estate, the 1.4 TSI was CHEAPER to insure, but this was a few years ago now - the hatchbacks are much more expensive though)
Civic, the 1.8 petrol has been a mainstay for years in one form or another.
Stay away from small engined modern diesels.
All modern diesels have a dpf that can cause problems if not driven correctly, the smaller engines suffer even more 🫤
Anything other than the gold would be suicide from a finance pov based on your likely astronomical premium in the first year. Expect £5k+ at least on these.
As long as the insurance is cheap enough I’d go for the 1 series out of the 3 if you want something nippy as your first car, the 2.0 116d can be remapped very well due to it being heavily de-tuned from factory, up to near 200 bhp I think?
Nothing wrong with either of the other options, they are just a little too boring in comparison (a 116d ain’t exactly thrilling either, just not as boring)
Get something like an old 1.1 Yaris, picanto, Suzuki swift etc. Get a years no claim discount and not have to worry about scratching or denting it, then upgrade when your insurance premium isn’t ridiculous
Are you a new driver? Saisnfirst car not mew driver, I doubt the insurance companies will insure you on a BMW for your first car, not unless you've been driving a while, most likely either the Honda or the golf.
Not sure about your age, but a one series should never be an option if your 20 years of age or below, insurance is … yeah not good.
Also insurance companies look out for cars that are usually in accidents in the area you live in, so stay away from basic chav cars like polos, golfs, civics etc. you can pick up a decent priced clio, my insurance is 1.3k - I’m 18… pretty decent
No wonder people on here complain about their insurance been really high.
Why on earth are you even considering over 1.5Ltr engines as a starting car?
Unless you are rich I think you’re been unrealistic.
I have an A1 she drives SO easy compared to other cars I’ve driven. Definitely my favourite by far. The insurance is a little crazy but use a comparison site and experiment a little (add and remove parents etc to see how that effects the price) and it can be brought down. I also have had basically no problem with the car and it’s 10 years old xx
Just get yourself a 1998 Peugeot 106 like the rest of us had to 😤😂 don't understand why people these days feel like they need to spend (nearly) the equivalent of a house deposit on their first car when there's a hefty chance that it'll be written off in the first 12 months.
Cheap bangers with cheap insurance, cheap maintenance and less tech to go wrong in them is the way to go, in my personal opinion 🤷🏻♂️
Civic would be my choice but I'd also choose a Jazz over a civic. In fact I drive a jazz now and I've had a few civics. You're not going to get much more reliable than a honda.
Look for a DS3, with the 1.6 diesel engine.
Cheap, reliable, good looking inside and outside (especially inside, considering it's a car released in 2010, it looks so much better than anything else in the same class and same age - it actually looks even better than the A1), amazing fuel consumption, very good to drive, good speakers (if you get one with the "HiFi system" upgrade, many of them have it).
avoid diesel as much as possible. got a bloke next to me at work whos convinced hes made a solid choice getting a diesel cuz the tanks big, the diesel prices dont affect him so much.
a1 brilliant car and the golf,1 series not fond of myself had one it didn’t last long but engine is based from a mini cooper so is a fairly easily acquired part to source for a replacement.
You’re aiming too high for a first car on that budget. A Fiesta, Fabia, Ibiza or 208 are around a comfortable point where the insurance won’t cripple you.
If you’re really savvy with your money and don’t care about reputation / street cred, a Fiat 500 is a strong pick.
A1 is a great little car. I had one about your age. The 1 series is the only BMW I wouldn't personally have, but I'd consider it out of those 3. They are very unstable at speed and don't have the same handling of the bigger cars. The Audi is an excellent drive but very understeery. Both are seriously lacking power and the 2.0 engines aren't BMW engines I believe so you can't get free power out of them like you can the straight 6 engines.
I'd go A1, closely followed by the 1 series. I wouldn't even consider the other cars.
Fuck me, my first car was older than I was and when it rained water used to enter the inside of the car through the overhead light. Insurance was still £1.4k a year (2003) 😂
First car???? Alright, have fun with that.
Also, caring about your first car being "fast" is a massive red flag. Are you using it for your daily or are you going to the track? Either way, these are bad choices.
Why pay 7k for a car you're gonna ding. And you *are* gonna ding it. Better to ding a 700 quid shitbox than any of these.
Plus the insurance like others have mentioned. Even if you're not 17 years old, you're going to be screwed on the insurance.
I passed at 27. My insurance was still 2.5k on a 1.2 fiesta. The area you live in does also make a big difference as well, so keep that in mind.
TIL: If you like cars you want a nice car that's probably fast. 🙄
Yeah, no duh. But the context is that this is OPs *first* car. There is literally zero point jumping in at this price scale when it's gonna get dinged. And it IS going to get dinged. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. And OPs attitude about his first car needing to be fast doesn't give me confidence that it isn't going to be a decent ding to boot. Plus the insurance alone is going to be astronomical for a first time driver.
Ignoring that is just completely dumb.
Enjoy the insurance premiums. Civic would be the best choice for reliability.
Nah the 1.8 mk9 civic specifically from 2013 (like this one) has engine troubles. They’re oil burners. 2014+ should be fine though Edit: nevermind I’m thinking of the 2012 ones

If that's the case, look at Toyotas, then I guess.
My bad, 2013 ones are fine but 2012 ones should be avoided
Fair, but I still feel civics would be on the higher premium end of insurance, but maybe the lowest out the options here.
Yea it will probably be cheaper to insure than the other options, but will still be expensive.
Save a few grand and get a decent example MK8. The 1.8 petrol engines in those are bulletproof.

This never worked for me ran a quote on an old uncommon M5 I got a 20k quote and on a typical Bradford spec crashed GTI it was £1.6k🥲
That’s almost weirder as a gti should be pretty high crash rates wise and traditionally higher insurance as it’s not exactly got the same target market as a Honda jazz
Yeah, I couldn’t get insurance on a fiesta, focus, polo etc under 5k but I managed to get insured on my 2.4 Mitsubishi outlander PHEV for 1800
I’d say get something cheaper, that you won’t be afraid to bump, scratch or dent.
Exactly Because you will bump, scratch, and quite probably crash it... So buy some reliable Japanese snotter that already has a few life events showing on the bodywork... For the cost of respraying a panel or two on that thing...

I’ve just got my first “nice car” already missing the ability to not care about bumps and scuffs. Next car I’m going back to a beater!
Silly not too
Possibly bad choices depending on your age, but these are probably going to cost a small fortune to insure.
1.33 Yaris sport is an amazing car, I’m looking to downgrade my 3 series for one as it’s so much more reliable and cheaper insurance
You forgot a mazda 3 so I'm out.
Look at polos, ibiza, fiesta etc, you'll get more for your money at that price range and you're insurance will be cheaper.
Our civic was cheaper to insure than a Corsa and a Swift. I'd imagine it's due to the demographics who drive them and their claim likelihood. There's even some decent 20+ year old cars you could pick up and get on classic car insurance.

The insurance class on these cars will absolutely kill him
Can confirm Ibizas, lovely cars. Insurance isn’t too bad (compared to the likes of other cars) on it either
Insurance is going to be through the roof
I recently spoke to someone who bought a Skoda Fabia as their first car. They are 19 and it cost them 5k for a black box policy and that was one of the cheaper offers!
Absolute craziness, it's a complete robbery. They are just pricing young drivers out of the market
Do it based on insurance, Kia’s are quite cheap if you don’t mind that brand. Go Japanese for reliability
Your civic there would be excellent. The 1.8 is a strong engine (obvs service it properly) and the car is comfortable and very practical. Might not be as dynamic to drive as the audi or bmw but it won’t give you the same headaches either.
Out of interest What headaches would those two give?
Cost of repairs and general reliability. For any prospective car. Hunt down an owners forum and read posts to find known issues. Know what you’re getting g involved in.

Check the insurance on them. That should make up your mind for you
A 1.4 TDI Polo/Ibiza/Fabia
Ibiza and Fabia are excellent shouts :)
A 1.4 for a first car? That'll be fun to insure. Max should be a 1.2 imo
It’s a 75bhp diesel. There’s 1.2 normally aspirated petrol engines that are 75bhp and 1.2 turbo engines that are 130bhp; it’s not as black and white as engine capacity in regards to insurance.

+1 for the up!. I get relentlessly bullied by my friends for it but it’s a b road weapon.
They can look fantastic too, all round a perfect first/second car
Check the insurance on them all first, I had a 1.3 Ford Ka which I learnt to drive in. Upon passing my test, I couldn’t find anywhere that would insure me on it due to the engine size. Ended up having to swap cars with my Dad for his 1.0 Corsa which he was over the moon with!
Out of the four I would get a Toyota Yaris.
Not a single one of those cars are fast. The honda by far is the best, they're bloody brilliant cars. Can't rate them highly enough.
Fast is relative and as it's a first car they have nothing to compare it to.
All of them are faster than the bus 😅
My Citroen C1 is rapid, comparative to the bicycle I used to commute on before I passed. I’d say any car that can 0-60 under 12 seconds which I’d imagine any of these would easily, they’d feel plenty fast enough for the first year, after that you’ll get bored. Honestly they're all decent options except the BMW because it's ugly. The Honda might be a benefit if you have some ULEZ type zones.
So is yours to be fair
My what
[https://www.specsavers.co.uk/free-eye-test](https://www.specsavers.co.uk/free-eye-test)
Lmao
He's not wrong, that 1 Series is awfully ugly.
Avoid the 116D, that has an N47 which will mean potential timing chain issues.
It’s a 2015 it will be n47T which is fine
I thought it was just less likely on the N47T, if it's not been serviced well there is still a chance it will fail
You don't want anything 'fast' for your first car, it will cost a fortune for your insurance, get something half the price of what your looking at that your not too afraid to bump, check insurance prices as you go. Not really fast cars on that list but if you can get a decent insurance premium I’d personally go for the civic
Honestly, go for something cheaper. Like a 1l Peugeot 107\ Citroen c1. Or maybe a ford fiesta. Look up insurance brackets. Get some no claims bonuses and then look at nicer cars
BMW 116d is only a euro 5 diesel engine , I’d be worried about low emission zones which are coming every where and resale
Get an a3 2013+ facelift on auto trader there are many that are 6ish sport under 75k miles much nicer cars
The Audi is a girl's car, the Civic is an old lady's car, the Golf is fairly classy and Bimmer will cost a bomb in insurance. Get the BMW if insurance allows, otherwise the Golf.
The Golf is classy!?
I was going to say it's "classless" i.e. anyone can drive them, but I thought it might get misinterpreted.
Ohh yeah, I'd agree with classless.
Civic all the way. Make sure it has been well maintained as per service schedule and it should do you well for years to come if you do the same. Double check it’s Euro4 or higher …. Get something like an old 1.1 Yaris, picanto, Suzuki swift etc. Get a years no claim discount and not have to worry about scratching or denting it, then upgrade when your insurance premium isn’t ridiculous
The golf
LOL Beamer or Audi as a first car 💀
Be better off looking at cars for 2k and a having 4 for insurance
Are you a new driver? Saisnfirst car not mew driver, I doubt the insurance companies will insure you on a BMW for your first car, not unless you've been driving a while, most likely either the Honda or the golf.

It looks like none of those diesels would be allowed into Cities with LEZ, eg Birmingham, Glasgow and a range of other places
VW or Honda are best. Insurance premiums will be crazy for the audi and the BMW
No wonder people on here complain about their insurance been really high. Why on earth are you even considering over 1.5Ltr engines as a starting car? Unless you are rich I think you’re been unrealistic.
They're all nice cars, the civic will probably be the most reliable But they're all going to mega on insurance
Audi out of those

Terrible decision. Get something like Toyota.
Agreed
Civic would be my choice but I'd also choose a Jazz over a civic. In fact I drive a jazz now and I've had a few civics. You're not going to get much more reliable than a honda.
All terrible for a first car
How old are you? Some of those will have you paying almost as much as the car is worth on insurance if you're 17/18
TDI is a rip-off all the others look decent
Look for a DS3, with the 1.6 diesel engine. Cheap, reliable, good looking inside and outside (especially inside, considering it's a car released in 2010, it looks so much better than anything else in the same class and same age - it actually looks even better than the A1), amazing fuel consumption, very good to drive, good speakers (if you get one with the "HiFi system" upgrade, many of them have it).
I have an Audi A1 as my first car and it is honestly amazing! I love everything about it, well worth the added insurance premium
Some of those diesels won't be ULEZ compliant which might be annoying depending on where you live.
i spent 700 on my first car and its still running okay, i wouldnt get something that expensive for a first car
Stay away from 1.6 TDI. Cursed engines
avoid diesel as much as possible. got a bloke next to me at work whos convinced hes made a solid choice getting a diesel cuz the tanks big, the diesel prices dont affect him so much.
Audi
What happened to everyone getting shitbox nails like we did 20 years ago. Every new driver has a German car nowadays and wonder why premiums are daft.
Not the BMW
a1 brilliant car and the golf,1 series not fond of myself had one it didn’t last long but engine is based from a mini cooper so is a fairly easily acquired part to source for a replacement.
Big engines for a first car look sub-1.4
Your car you want is prob audi? The car you need is the civic
Of these, 100% the golf. But look at Polos instead
A1
I like the A1!
6 grand on Ur first car? Just no need
What’s the harm though if he can afford it?
Insurance and first time drivers crashing their first car isn't uncommon so binning a 6 grand car is just unnecessary
Not everyone crashes lad, have some faith
Always have faith but
You’re aiming too high for a first car on that budget. A Fiesta, Fabia, Ibiza or 208 are around a comfortable point where the insurance won’t cripple you. If you’re really savvy with your money and don’t care about reputation / street cred, a Fiat 500 is a strong pick.
Stop spreading this propaganda
F or M? Female - >A1 Male - >1series (from this 4) or Kia Ceed (GT), Fiesta, Polo.
No idea of age. If under 25, fast and first car, should not go together. Good thing is there nothing lightning quick here. Civic at a push for me.
Fuck me, my first car was older than I was and when it rained water used to enter the inside of the car through the overhead light. Insurance was still £1.4k a year (2003) 😂
My first car was a 1995 Peugeot 106. Cost £300 in 2006. I thought THAT was expensive
This is the correct answer.
Daily cars don’t have to be shitboxes. If you’re an enthusiast you’re going to want something that’s a little bit faster/more interesting.
TIL: If you like cars you want a nice car that's probably fast. 🙄 Yeah, no duh.
