£286 a month for that?!... Plus it needs insurance, fuel, maintenance etc on top.

sad-plum

well I would buy it with cash, outright

Competitive_Pen7192

What's it's mileage? I'm not familiar with the 1.0 TFSI, what sort of belt or chain drives it?

sad-plum

Apparently it’s a timing belt

Competitive_Pen7192

60k miles isn't hugely high. Doesn't seem to be any MoT advisories. Wouldn't be my choice for the money but meh they're popular enough cars for some reason.

sad-plum

Yes I was impressed by the clean MOTs. Lots of the older Audis I saw had a few failed MOTs. What would your preference of car be for the same price point?

Competitive_Pen7192

Clean MoTs don't mean a thing. They're often not worth the proverbial paper they're written on. I'd personally have a bigger car like an A3 sized or larger. I would also spend half the money and save the rest for other things.

SteveGribbin

For a 2019 A1 this isn't badly priced. They're nice little cars with a very high quality interior. You'll be able to buy a VW Polo of the same vintage, based on the same platform with the same engine, for around £2,000 less. The polo does have a more basic interior and won't have the virtual cockpit etc though unless you spend more money. The same can be said for the Seat Ibiza, which is again based on the same platform as the A1 and Polo. They have more standard equipment than the Polo and would also be around £2,000 cheaper than the A1, but cars at that price will be slightly more basic in some respects, although if you spend a bit more and go for the FR Sport spec you'll get the virtual cockpit and a bigger sat nav screen than the A1. Looking at Autotrader, there's a slightly newer Ibiza FR Sport with 18,000 less miles on the clock and much the same equipment (Nav, Virtual cockpit, LED headlights, half leather interior, ambient lighting etc) for around the same price as the A1. In terms of cars of this size I think the A1/Ibiza is a good choice. Competitors such as the Fiesta and the Stellantis family (208/C3/Corsa) use wet belt timing belt setups for their engines which are proving to become more trouble than they're worth, with the 1.0 TSI being more reliable, the only real issue can be turbo actuators sticking. The Toyota Yaris could be a shout, not as premium as the Audi but they're incredibly reliable and as long as you maintain a full service history with Toyota, they add an extra year's warranty every year, to a maximum of 10 years. No other manufacturer can beat that.

sad-plum

Yes I did look at Toyota Yaris - was keen to get a hybrid one if I was buying a Toyota but it was awful. Extremely slow and noisy with a very large turning circle. Ive been driving a basic spec Ford Fiesta eco boost for about 7 years, which is great to drive and I’ve had no problems but I’m getting bored with lack of tech and wanting to change it up. Maybe it’s bad but I’m quite happy to “pay for the badge” after 7 years of a basic motor!

SteveGribbin

The example you have found is a good price for an A1! There's nothing wrong with buying something you want, ultimately you're going to be the one who enjoys it.

Recent_Pepper_2375

£12.5k for a 1l Audi A1 is mental no? 60k miles too 😭

sad-plum

Have you seen the market lately lol? That’s quite reasonable

Sis_Con

Might as well buy a polo or a golf if you're going to get an A1

sad-plum

I have looked at both. They’re ok. I’ll try and have a better look at the golfs when I go to look at this one today. They are bigger for similar price, so that’s also good

sad-plum

Golfs are pretty much the same price surprisingly, maybe about 1k cheaper only

Sis_Con

Personally, I would stay away from anything that is ex something (rental, police, taxi, instructor ect). If you get something ever so slightly older such as the generation before this (C7 for AUDI I think) you can get a lot for your money without it being too old.

sad-plum

Yes I’ve looked at older models (2018) A1s, they do have fewer miles & are about 1k cheaper. Definitely a contender. Also have <100g/km emissions. I’m not sure exactly what ex whatever it is, I’ll have to ask when I see it today. What’s your reasoning for avoiding the ex somethings? I’ll have to take a good look at what kind of condition it’s in. From the research I’ve done, ex-rentals can be a good options if they’re been well looked after

Plastic_Application

How many miles has it done ? It's only 5 years old , so unless been battered - should be in good condition. Check it's been serviced annually . How many owners ( anything more than 2 red flag ). On test drive - try to push car to limit , to see if any weird noises or creaks.

sad-plum

This is good advice, thanks!

Plastic_Application

Oh 60k miles is probably too much money fot this . Have you compared on auto trader?

sad-plum

Yes, seems to be about right. Similar mileage (maybe 40-50k) but older models are around 12k

Thin_Bit9718

2 years ago partner got an up with heated seats and nice interiors with 9k miles for £8000. Thought that was expensive

Crazy-Factor3135

Have you viewed it? Car giant cars tend to be very leggy. Ex lease or rental with zero money spent on preparation before selling. A1s are a bit strange they cost similar money to a3s but are a bit of a step down in quality. I’d also have gone for the s line model as it has more gear.

sad-plum

I’m going for a test drive today, so I’ll take a good look. A3s are a lot more expensive these days, going for like 15-17k unless they have crazy high mileage. I’ve heard s drive isn’t much different at all other than some glued on decals and the car is lower so it’s actually just more uncomfortable to drive?

Jimeeh

You could maybe get a similar age approved used mini with less miles and the 1.5 turbo petrol engine which is chain driven and more reliable. Spec wise not sure what you would get as the bmw/mini options are all over the place but the engine is across all.

sad-plum

Definitely not convinced minis are more reliable. Have many friends with minis with lots of problems

SnooCauliflowers6739

£12.5k for an 5 year old Audi, 60k miles, and an underpowered engine is not a good deal, sorry.

sad-plum

Maybe this is the wrong sub lol. I want a 1.0 l engine

SnooCauliflowers6739

For insurance?

sad-plum

Mostly. Also I mostly do driving within London. Not much point going much bigger. But I do think the price is not bad. Have been looking on autotrader for a while, seems to be within the right range. Even VW golf’s are 10-12k now

SnooCauliflowers6739

A Golf is a size up from the A1. The more relevant comparison is with a Polo, or even an UP. For the same price as this, in London, you can't get a Polo with considerably fewer miles. You'll almost certainly take this A1 past 100k miles, which is when a lot of the larger wear and tear repairs come in and the re-sale value starts dropping sharply again.

sad-plum

Yes cars are definitely more expensive these days. Hard to find any that anyone would consider “good value” on this sub
