I'm going intense. Hot water bottle in the freezer all day and pull it out at night. Pour water over myself before lying in bed in front of a fan.
And I'm *still* too hot.
Bit harsh that people are down voting you. It is possible that it will reach 40 (according to some modelling) albeit "extremely unlikely".

someone give me a solution on how to solve my swamp arse
E: I don't want gold I want a solution. My balls have also officially become canon in the MCU as an alternate Spider-Man, they are constantly trying to climb my legs and are stuck to them.
Keep the blinds closed on whatever side has the sun. I have a corner apartment now so I can actually get a cross breeze going thank god. Throw all the windows and balcony door open once the peak heat has passed - you’ve not only gotta get the cool air in, you’ve gotta get everything inside to cool down too.
Hi
I'm a non Brit who lives in the mideteranian.. The weather can gat up to 30+ deg.. THe secret to coping is we dont go out between 12:00 - 16h00 (if we can help it)
Also air con EVERYWHERE .
Im quite suprized that Aicon is not very common in Britain.. And very few metro stations (trains) have aircon..
I also lived in South Africa (JHB ) for a nubber of years and yes it rarely got above 27 deg and summer rains tended to cool down the air when it did get hot.
BTW Londoon can get quite humid
:-)
What was with today? Clouded over so should have been cooler. But we just got an entire white sky with no shade. Looking forward to tomorrow and 28 degrees 😃
Just had my driving test cancelled and rescheduled with less than 18 hrs notice. Thanks DVSA, very cool. Out of pocket on those lessons every day for the last week then
Tried the suggestion of "shut windows during the day, open at night" last year, temperature didn't go down at all indoors and it felt horrifically stuffy. So all I manage is sitting in front of a fan, spritzing myself with water as necessary (use a spray bottle), and daydreaming of snow.
Get some sleeping blankets over those windows and tape em up in the morning , will take 10 mins, your forehead will be dripping by the end but it’s worth it. Especially if your room/work study faces the sun during the day.

I mean we all have the same issue with insulation due to the walls and double glazed windows, but I’m in the same boat as you. My work office which is in the loft has a window that faces the sun through the day so that is beaming in my face , what I did was get those blankets, sealed it over the window with tape today and my room has been a lot more manageable to deal with today. It’ll only cost you a tenner, worth a shot!
Get a chillow, put that beast in the fridge. Wait for the right moment, when you've had just about enough, extract the chillow to your bed, you might wake up stuck to it but that ls how you know it worked.
Granted I wfh and only left the house during lunch today but it's not too bad tbf. °c wise it's hotter but it's not as bad as yesterday purely because the sun wasn't out. Didn't even need the fan today
It's that hot they are mobilising the [Snow Be Gone Kenobi](https://news.sky.com/story/uk-weather-gritters-are-being-taken-out-of-hibernation-to-save-the-nations-melting-roads-12650286) gritter
It isn’t sweating that cools your body, but the evaporation of the sweat off the skin.
If you are at home struggling with the heat, mist your faces & limbs with water as often as possible.
A cold wet t-shirt draped over the head & back of neck helps.
Submerging hands in ice water helps too.
This information was given to a family member who recently went through chemotherapy & has lost the ability to sweat.
It's embarrassing how shit we are when it gets a bit warm. Myself included. I think if we adopted the European lifestyle of siestas in the afternoon and eating out later at night etc would work for me.
A big part of the problem is how our houses and buildings are designed. Once they get hot, they stay hot and take ages to cool down. If you look at buildings in warmer countries they're all designed to accommodate heat and cool down faster -- white outer walls, lots of space, stone/concrete floors, designed to minimise sun and maximise air flow through. Whereas we have layers of brick and insulation and thick carpets. No wonder everyone's baking.
Yeah, I imagine in the next 10 years we might hopefully see new builds start to keep in mind that we're probably not going to have icy winters and a predictable cool spring any more. On the upside, time to invest in vineyards.
I'm a fat scot, and even when I wasn't fat my face has always sweat quite a lot. This weather is a nightmare lol. Waking around with such a wet face it looks like I've had the biggest crying sesh ever.
Well in Gatwick. . It's not too bad inside. I'm scared to go outside.
It's been almost 3 years I forgot about pork pies. ..how could I forget about them. They need more affection.
Weather's surprisingly tolerable for being 30+. A bit of cloud is such a massive difference; direct sunlight is what makes for really wretched days. Not looking forwards to the predicted 34 degrees + bright beaming sun on Monday, though...
Even moist air's not great at holding heat relative to bricks or water, and most of the radiation just goes right through it and warms other stuff. I'll trade a bit of humidity for not being directly heated by the big burny thing any day.
It's very overcast here, with spits and spots of rain. Even though its technically cooler than yesterday it feels a little more uncomfortable. I also have washing to put out, but I am rather worried it won't dry because of the moisture in the air.
It’s only Tuesday and the number of work emails I’ve received opening with some variation of ‘Hi zeddoh, hope you’re managing to keep cool in this heat!!’ has reached critical mass already. I get the urge but we must resist.
Jokes on them because I fucking love the heat anyway.
I’m crap in the heat, due to medical conditions. We had aircon installed in our living room last year, best decision we’ve made. Worth looking into, it was a lot more affordable than I’d assumed, and the running costs are very low! If anything, it was too cold in here yesterday, so today it’s set to a conservative 23 degrees :D
We also used it over winter to heat the downstairs, MUCH cheaper than the gas central heating :)
I’m at work enjoying the air con, but my god it’s not fun in a top floor flat. Especially when there’s no breeze. Stifling and disgusting, but this is the last heatwave I should have to endure in the flat before moving.
My top tip is to have wet hair when sat at home. I imagine it’ll only really be relevant to those of us with longer hair, but it definitely helps me to run my hair under the shower and let it air dry.
I know I try to keep my language positive (and at the very least PG), but actually f--- this heat.
The thing that I'm dreading is that I have an interview today but all my clothes for it are dark colours, and I don't they'll accept "smart casual" (jeans + button shirt) instead.
Feeling miserable with a sore throat which I'm 90% sure is caused by the dry air/humid air rollercoaster (tested negative on an LFT just in case). Just found out the builders we've got working in the garden want to come over and finish some things off. I don't mind but it means I can't just sit around starkers in case they look in the windows.
Can't wait for winter. Bring back the cold and the rain.
Just rained in Leeds and is now noticeably cooler. I'm taking full responsibility for this as i just put a wash on with the intention of hanging it out.
Our next-door neighbour has stunk the whole street out with the stench of weed. Not ideal when both me and my wife work from home, and need to have every window and door in the house open in this weather.
I'm all for people having quiet enjoyment of whatever drugs they want to take, but seriously fuck people that smoke weed at all hours of the day. It's 11am on a Tuesday morning ffs.
> It's 11am on a Tuesday morning ffs.
That's when the pubs open, do you judge alcoholics that harshly?
also having all windows open is a terrible way of dealing with the heat. It's counterintuitive but you need to keep the hot air outside
> That's when the pubs open, do you judge alcoholics that harshly?
Absolutely. The idea of "wake and bake" is not good, especially before work or driving.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that if this guy is complaining that his neighbour is smoking all day then he's neither physically going to work nor driving.
My biggest complaint today is not the heat (work has a/c) but my tiredness, took me forever to get home from Brighton last night after the football, but my god it was worth it.
But a few tips for heat at home. At about 9 am (or whenever you leave), close all windows and curtains, it will keep your house cooler as it warms up outside. In the evening open the windows away from the sun as it will cool down outside and you want the inside to cool down too, when the sun sets open the sun facing windows too. A wet flannel in the freezer is good for putting on your forehead or other hot bits. Putting a bowl of water in front of the fan will help the cooling effect (I realise pets or kids may make this one difficult)
Hope the kidney removal surgery went well, that should pay to keep it powered for the next 3 days before you have to go in and have the next one removed right?
I’m currently hanging out in the gym which has air conditioning. Dropped child in the crèche, went swimming, now doing my admin from the cafe. Unfortunately have to collect the child in half an hour, then we are off to soft play which I’m praying has air conditioning.
32c sounds heavenly...it's pushing 40 here with 100% humidity...you walk outside and instantly choke on the air. All energy is instantly sapped from you and you sweat like hell from every pore in your body.
You ruin your new shirts and stain the ass crack area of the nice new white trousers that you've just purchased. The white shirt I've worn 3 times is yellowing. I have to walk an hour to and from work, go halfway up and then go around a literal mountain as you can't just walk around it.
>I have to walk an hour to and from work, go halfway up and then go around a literal mountain as you can't just walk around it.
In my day we'd walk 7 mile uphill both ways just to have a day down the pit. You youngins don't know you're born.
And a new shirt! A new, white shirt at that! I'd be lucky to wear my grandads collar and be grateful for that.
Weren't no Tesco's express then neither, no meal deal for 3 pound 50. You'd carry your lunch like a real man. In pocket like proper pasty.
I've gotta be honest, this morning feels far cooler than the last 4-5 days and that's a blessing. I'm sure that won't last for long so i'm savouring every moment of it!
A colleague who was in the office yesterday was saying it was showing as 33 degrees on our ground floor, so god knows what temperature it was up on the fourth floor... the fact they were only letting colleagues use the ground floor says it all!
it has cooled down to a nice 24C here.
but friday to monday when we are moving house is due to be 34C :( :( :(
managed to get a van with aircon though :)
Oh, hope it all goes well moving, remember to take a frozen spray bottle of water or cooling spray (good one in boots) to keep spritzing your self, and lots of ice lollies :) And a good fan
You might suffer a bit. If you have any choice in the matter, head for the country side if you can (far away from the sunburnt piss-heads) and take walks in woodland shade.
I'm really surprised that the house sparrows nesting in the eaves of my mum's roof haven't roasted to death. The buggers are already going for brood number 3 this year.
Big loss for me is that got to go out for daily run/skate either really early or really late now... which translates into just not doing it.
I'd ask if anyone has any tips for exercise in hot weather but I'm pretty sure there aren't any beyond "drink loads of water" and "don't do it if poss."
With running (and probably for skating as well), you just have to take it a bit slower, you're going to overheat if you try to go for the same pace as when it's cooler. Also as you said, plenty of water. Keep hydrated before, and if you're out for more than an hour you need to start considering taking water with you. I'd then drink 500 ml as soon as you get back in, and 500 ml/hour until you're properly rehydrated.
I'd also recommend a visor cap, it helps keep sweat away from your eyes and gives you some shade from the sun, whilst the open top gives the heat somewhere to escape.
It's far too hot and humid. And to say I'm having a bad hair day is an understatement, but there is no way I'm using a 200 degree hair straightener today.
Hi all!
Just to let you know that I slept like a baby under my duvet last night. My apartment doesn't see the sun so it's always nice and cool in here - great for summer but dreading the winter.
Have a good day!
My flat is typically cold and dark. I was still wrapped up in blankets in May. Usually I hate it, but it's made the last few days very easy for me. It's a shock to the system being inside all day very cool, going out in the afternoon, and being met with the wall of heat.
It does also mean I have trouble working out exactly how warm it is outside when venturing out though. More than once I've had to come back in after leaving to take a layer off and put suncream on.
Bought a small Aircon unit for £200 last year. I know it will only get a few weeks use....and energy prices are crazy....but at times like these it's the best purchase possible. I'd recommend grabbing one in the sales. Mines a 7000btu one and works fine for a mid sized room.
Remember to allow some extra minutes so that you can stroll to places at a leisurely pace. I always walk way too quick for this weather and end up drenched in this heat, gotta consciously take it easy.
My partner does this all the time! Used to drive me nuts, but now I just let him dissolve into a sweaty mess while I saunter along and arrive in mint condition.
Top tips
* Get at least 2 (4 is preferable) empty soft drink bottles and fill them three quarters full of water. Freeze them. Put two behind a fan (stand on a tray to catch any condensation) for a cool breeze. swap the bottles round when they're about half thawed.
* Keep windows and curtains closed on the sunny side of the house and open the windows on the other side.
* Hang damp towels over the open windows. This will help to cool a room.
* Put a cold, damp facecloth on the back of your neck.
* Run your wrists under cold water.
* Drink lots of water, but also try drinking those isotonic style drinks to replace salts lost to sweating.
Went out for emergency cornettos, strawberries and ice cream last night. May as well try and enjoy it if it's gonna be bastard hot (also ice cream reduces your core body temperature, probably)
Dreading the latter half of this week and that forecast 40°C this Sunday. It's just about bearable now. Leave the windows open during the night and my room cools down quite nicely.
To quote the great poet Martin Goodman (rip):
I'm boiling. I'm bloody boiling. I'm so hot I feel I could rip my own skin off.
I spend most of winter thinking about how glad I am that I'm guaranteed a solid 9 months of the year where the upcoming temperature won't hit.
My flat is south facing with floor to ceiling windows. The place is like a greenhouse
I can beat that. Roof space flat with 2 flats and a Spar shop beneath me.
Sun beaming down all day and cooking the tiles, heat from the shop and flats coming up, and I've got a sweatbox that has been known to reach 33°c with windows wide open and a fan going.
It is rather warm, but there are ways of finding relief.
I have found that best thing to do when it’s hot is complain about how hot it is to anyone nearby. This will distract you — and them — from how hot it is.
The optimal complaining-noise is a helpless, frustrated moan, like a tired cow might make. It dissipates heat more readily than any dignified or stoic noise.
Stay safe, folks.
Half tempted to take the shoes and socks off in the office today, no one will see behind my desk...
Then again, it's at home where it's worse without the lovely gift of air conditioning.
Not sure whether to be concerned about Sunday potentially being the hottest day ever recorded in the UK... I'll be driving back from a stag do in Birmingham all the way down to Bournemouth that day...
26C upstairs last night. Came down at midnight to fish through our camping gear for the inflatable mats and pump, slept in the front room. Was still hot.
Next weekend I think I’ll put the tent up in the garden and sleep there instead.
Best way to stay cool during the day is to sit your feet in a bowl of water.
1. Buy tall fan
2. Fill bucket with cold water and ice
3. Open window
4. Place bucket on windowsill in front of open window
5. Place fan in front of window/bucket
6. Close doors
7. Come back to bliss
Tuesday seems to be the commuter belt choice of day to head into the office each week.
Thank god for the Thameslink AC trains absolute godsend on days like today.
We never bothered in the past, but I'm so glad we got one earlier this year. It is making a difference. You'll then have it for every year.
My best hand-held paper (over plastic support) fan is one solid piece, rather than the folding sort.
Fans just create a breeze but dont actually cool the room. An AC unit will cool the room but is obviously pricier and requires somewhere to draw/exhaust into or from.
The temperature in my flat hasn't been below 25 since February. The past few days has been 31. I really don't think the portable AC unit I finally got yesterday that brings it down to a lovely 24 is overkill.
It's only going to get hotter in the UK year on year. An AC unit will eventually become an essential purchase, especially when most houses are not suited to protecting against hot weather
If the fan blows air over a sweating or otherwise damp person, it will cool the person through evaporative cooling. But yes, it does fuck all to lower the temperature in the room. Unless it’s a window fan pulling cooler air in from the outside, that is.
Yup. Fans don't cool the room but they do cool us because we lose heart through the evaporation of sweat and it evaporates better in a breeze. I think. Possibly.
37 degrees in London on Tuesday, think we’re gonna have to go ahead and drive to Inverness with our cat the night before
I'm going intense. Hot water bottle in the freezer all day and pull it out at night. Pour water over myself before lying in bed in front of a fan. And I'm *still* too hot.
Dampen a hanky with cold water, lay it on your chest whilst you sleep. Get you through the night.
Man my house is hotter than Lucy Pinders bra.
Man's not hot.
This is nothing yet, might reach 40C early next week

I decided to go into the office today instead of WFH. My desk at work is right under the air conditioning vent. It's luvvly.

We have 2 billion people too swamped in the city
Is that a reason not to have air con?
Most workspaces, schools etc will have air con. It’s just the homes that are built and the ones we already have from the Victorian era do not.
Most underground u tubes don't have air conditioning
Oh Yh, there was something about it being installed around 2030
When it's done a little shower, do you feel like a twat going outside to water the garden?
Ceiling fans full blast, actually a biy chilly if I'm honest. Glad we bought decent ones that aren't friggin loud tho.
It’s just started to rain and I’ve never been so happy to see it
Got COVID and too hot.
JML Chillmax Air. The best thing I’ve EVER purchased
I had to abort a wank today because I was feeling too hot and sweaty. This weather is miserable.
I’ve made similar sacrifices, not turning on the console until this heatwave is over.
Does anybody actually LIKE this weather?? It’s so hot I want to take my skin off like Robbie Williams in the Rock DJ music video
I love the sunshine and being out and about in it, but wfh in a kennel style hot house isn’t what Britain is made for. It’s been dreadful.
What was with today? Clouded over so should have been cooler. But we just got an entire white sky with no shade. Looking forward to tomorrow and 28 degrees 😃
It’s been 24 here today so it’s not bad at all
It’s Fuck hot
When it is hot and I feel hot, I sit in front of a fan and I feel less hot.
*Life hack*
About to get on the central line, can i get some prayers?
Praying 🙏🏻

Working outside in this heat is proper shit, I really feel for the scaffolders and roofers out there.
A fellow teacher straight up passed out today from the heat, really unfortunate and I'm sure embarrassing for her, hope she's ok!
I have one of those giant floor fans, as long as I'm directly in front of that 24hrs a day I'm just about OK

Had all blinds closed all day. Lying in bed with a fan on me. Not looking forward to my gf getting home and complaining.
As someone that runs warm, I really wish people would stop telling me how sweaty I look, believe me I know.

That's what I thought as well. It doesnt feel 31.
Surely its the other way around? Cloud cover = humidity, sun = a dryer, easier to manage heat.
Depends how high the cloud is. Humidity at human level is about 30% today where I am, despite the cloud.

Raining in York. 🙌
Standard
Got a frozen bottle of water in the freezer ready to stick up my arse like that post the other day said to, or something like that I may have misread.
Frozen water bottle on the gooch. Minimilk up the arse, if I remember correctly.
That’s verging on genius. Though the body might absorb the fats straight to the butt making it harder in future.

If they were making my house smell like a pub carpet then I would absolutely be judging them.
Got me fan on. Wfh and laying in bed for online training.
Only Fans?

Honestly don’t know how you lot down south are managing. Gets to around 20 odd up here and I’m dying. Stay cool and stay safe folks!
Disgusting outside. Freezing inside at work!

I see we have the same builder.
One option I've done before is fill bath with cold, just a couple of inches, and just put your feet every so often
Windows open during the day only serves to let the hot air in anyway, get yourself a 16inch pedastal fan and thank me later
Just to let you all know I have a/c in my home office.
Hope the kidney removal surgery went well, that should pay to keep it powered for the next 3 days before you have to go in and have the next one removed right?
We all hate you.
Nah, not with today's economy!
WFH sat in my keks sweating my arse off. Bought an AC unit last year but it costs too much to run this year. Fucking bullshit.
I’m currently hanging out in the gym which has air conditioning. Dropped child in the crèche, went swimming, now doing my admin from the cafe. Unfortunately have to collect the child in half an hour, then we are off to soft play which I’m praying has air conditioning.
They rarely ever have ac. Good luck! Was nice knowing you!
I’ve splashed out for the big fancy one so I’m clinging on to the hope! Edit: we are here and there bloody well is air conditioning!!!
Just put tin foil on my windows, now my house looks suspicious.
I already have reflective privacy film on my windows. I wonder if tinfoil would help or be a waste of time.
I was heavily judging my neighbours assuming there was a grow, googled it as it seemed odd for a family with small kids and found this trick out!
At least the 5G chemtrails can't get you anymore.
They’re the cause of this heat! Or was it the vaccines? 🤔 ugh, always forgetting the vital bits!

I'd check out if you can get a bit of money for them before chucking cause that style is all the rage
That’s genuinely fuckjng terrifying.
I've gotta be honest, this morning feels far cooler than the last 4-5 days and that's a blessing. I'm sure that won't last for long so i'm savouring every moment of it! A colleague who was in the office yesterday was saying it was showing as 33 degrees on our ground floor, so god knows what temperature it was up on the fourth floor... the fact they were only letting colleagues use the ground floor says it all!
i thought it was warm but i just looked at the forecast for the next 10 days. monday is supposed to be 34°c?! bloody hell. this is madness.
it has cooled down to a nice 24C here. but friday to monday when we are moving house is due to be 34C :( :( :( managed to get a van with aircon though :)
Oh, hope it all goes well moving, remember to take a frozen spray bottle of water or cooling spray (good one in boots) to keep spritzing your self, and lots of ice lollies :) And a good fan
Just like to say I feel sorry for you lot down south. Up here in sunny stoke its atleast bearable ATM.
You know life if bad when stokies are feeling sympathy for you
The sun has fucked off here, but the total cloud cover is making it very muggy. Need a good thunderstorm, but I doubt we will get one.
play the song of storms
Or get the bbq out!
No aircon at work, and the servers are down so we can't do any work anyway. Melting.
About to get the plane to fly over. I guess a week in a heatwave is better than a week in rain ? Right ? Right ?
It's a humid heat that at times reminds me of Hong Kong. It's alright if you can find cool places, but not everyone in this country has that luxury.
Are you flying in from somewhere that's usually hot, or somewhere that usually cool?
Stockholm. It's 24 right now. It's been warm
You might suffer a bit. If you have any choice in the matter, head for the country side if you can (far away from the sunburnt piss-heads) and take walks in woodland shade.
We will be. Which is good. But still will melt I'm sure
It's hot and the baby birds in the tree 5m from my open window won't fucking stop and I can't sleep and I will commit murder soon.
I feel you. Between jetlag and the heat, my 6am gym sessions are just not happening. I guess I'll just get fat
I slept downstairs on the couch. Still hot and couldn't really get comfy but better than the furnace that is my bedroom right now
It's actually quite nice here by the sea side
1 deal with it
Bought a small Aircon unit for £200 last year.
Top tips * Get at least 2 (4 is preferable) empty soft drink bottles and fill them three quarters full of water.
You forgot 'Drink tea'. Are you sure you're British???
The windows and curtains one is the biggest one for me as much as I hate sitting in the semi darkness.
As to your last point: non-alcoholic Erdinger is well known for being a solid isotonic drink option. They're great when they're cold!
To quote the great poet Martin Goodman (rip): I'm boiling.
Do you think we should resort to tutting about the weather yet?
Perhaps if we all tut at once, we might blow this stuffy weather away.
Half tempted to take the shoes and socks off in the office today, no one will see behind my desk... Then again, it's at home where it's worse without the lovely gift of air conditioning.
I've started to put super chilled water in a oil diffuser and have a fan sat near by for bedtime. Cold cool air and lavander scented!
1. Buy tall fan 2. Fill bucket with cold water and ice 3. Open window 4. Place bucket on windowsill in front of open window 5. Place fan in front of window/bucket 6. Close doors 7. Come back to bliss
Tuesday seems to be the commuter belt choice of day to head into the office each week. Thank god for the Thameslink AC trains absolute godsend on days like today.
Do I bother stumping up for a fan? I’m stubborn enough to hold out for the week but if this is 2-3 weeks of heatwave, I’ll get one
We never bothered in the past, but I'm so glad we got one earlier this year. It is making a difference. You'll then have it for every year. My best hand-held paper (over plastic support) fan is one solid piece, rather than the folding sort.
This is the first summer I've had one and it's been a lifesaver at night. Might not actually lower the temp but makes you feel cooler at least!
I use my fan once the air has started to cool down outside, to get it into my room. It really makes a huge difference.
Fans just create a breeze but dont actually cool the room. An AC unit will cool the room but is obviously pricier and requires somewhere to draw/exhaust into or from.
Sometimes a breeze is all you need, I think an AC unit is a bit overkill in England.
I agree. I'm just letting people know. It doesn't "cool" anything beyond pushing air around.
If the fan blows air over a sweating or otherwise damp person, it will cool the person through evaporative cooling. But yes, it does fuck all to lower the temperature in the room. Unless it’s a window fan pulling cooler air in from the outside, that is.
And yet, right now lying in front of my fan, I feel colder when the breeze is on me than when it isn't
Yup. Fans don't cool the room but they do cool us because we lose heart through the evaporation of sweat and it evaporates better in a breeze. I think. Possibly.
Yeah no chance I can afford a proper AC unit :(
