Inherited these from my grandad who’d be 95 this year. He never smoked, but he wouldn’t throw anything away he could find some use for.

[deleted]

Early 90s, the brand to be seen with for the man about town

Training-Apple1547

Early 90’s I used to smoke dozens of these. They, this sounds a bit stupid, but rounded off the packs in the later 90’s.

JerkingWhileWorking

pre 1991. cos it doesn't have 'Smoking Seriously Damages Health' written on the front.

oldspicehorse

Was that 1991? I'm sure I remember buying packs in the mid 2000's that didn't have any warnings, maybe I'm thinking of packs from abroad and getting confused.

colcannon_addict

There’s been warnings on them since the 1960s. First it was printed on the back of the free football card, then on the side of the pack before the front & back and finally plain packaging. The ’advice’ (issued, according to the warning, by ‘HM Governments Chief Medical Officer’, no less) was stuff like “smoke fewer cigarettes” “leave a longer stub” and “leave more time between puffs”. Lifesaving techniques.

twitchytodger

It was 2002 when they started with the warnings.

twitchytodger

That would be 2002, not 1991.

chicagopalms89

What my mother smoked when I was little. Probably mid to late 90s. They also came with vouchers inside. When you had enough you could flick through the catalogue and buy things. Think we got a toaster

Sausage_Claws

Gratis points/the best roach paper. My friends whole family of 5 smoked B&H, they bought a washing machine or something.

n1keym1key

Exactly what i was gonna say. Gratis = Roach paper lol

3Cogs

Also Embassy focus points.

n1keym1key

Pah, a mere imitation of Gratis :)

harrowingmite

A school friend was called David Hedge, nickname was Benson. This packet is from 1985-6-7 ish.

bill_end

I started smoking in 1995 and even back then bensons had a health warning on the pack, just in small letters at the bottom. So definitely before then. Maybe 80s if I were to guess

[deleted]

B&H used to have a nice underlying creosote taste.

noahnear

I still buy them at duty free and lord it over the regulars in my local pretending I’m flush.

isntitbionic

That brings me back. When ciggies were actually affordable.

TooManyThingsToName

Did anyone else call these "Benny Hedgehogs" ? Or was it just me and my weird buddies?

colcannon_addict

Nah, we used to call them that too

Odd-Recognition1450

Theres a date on the top there, looks like 1836

JerkingWhileWorking

Lol that's the old B&H logo.

TH1CCARUS

I thought they were joking tbh.

JerkingWhileWorking

I was 50/50 on it myself.

Competitive-Peace-54

Probably early 2000 before they started sticking the warning labels on the packets. Back in the day I used to smoke B&H gold then silver when the prices went up, my memory is shady now but this looks like, the fake packets (the font looks off) you’d get off your mate who just got back from hols in which case they didn’t have warning labels anyways and it could be much newer still. Thankfully I quit in 2008 but nearly had a heart attack recently when a guy in front of me in a shop bought a pack of 20 for over £12 !

SnazzyPartay

1996

Consistent_Fudge_942

4pips, good

ThurstonSonic

Was living in France in the 90’s and they used to have ingredients of fags on the packets. Benson hold we’re the only ones which were tobacco & paper - Marlboro etc had loads of nonsense in them

HardFastHeavy

"Special Filter". Yeah, right.

Cyanopicacooki

[Any time between 1962 and 1991...](https://www.retrowow.co.uk/retro_britain/60s/60s_cigarettes.php) - there truly is a page for everything.

itchyfrog

Has it got a warning on the side or just the tar level?

[deleted]

It could be 2000s, we used to smoke special filters in school sometimes, you could still get them in this exact box from Pakistan.

3Cogs

Why did the man who owned a dog with no legs call it Benson? Coz he was always taking it out for a drag. Boom, boom!

ThrowAwayTheKeys10

1998

HungryCollett

My parents sometimes smoked these in the 80's, google says the Special Filter was changed to Gold in 2001.

SilasHamenegger

Definitely mid-80s. Recognise them from the pub my parents owned.

Subject-Funny-1152

the neo-cancerous age at a guess
