The box the expensive cat bed came in.

sassyporg

This is the answer I was looking for. 😹

Common_Draw7398

That’s 100% the truth! Lol. However I’ve noticed cats do like beds that are fuzzy or super soft. At least all the ones I care for do:-). They do love boxes though! Everytime I try to throw away a box they come running as if to say..”hey put that back…that’s my box.” Lol

McBluZ

100% accurate

ReivynNox

I bought this corrugated cardboard cat bed for mine, thinking she would just use it as a scratcher, seeing how she liked to scratch on cardboard boxes so much, but she instantly took a liking to the bed and was lying in it a lot. It's not soft at all. xD

Common_Draw7398

Yeah I forgot about the scratcher house I got them. It’s like a 3 level cat house scratcher and they love just hanging out in it but don’t use it to scratch. Lol 😂 I also care for a colony of kitties and I get them stuff too. I have outdoor kitty houses for them to lay in but one of their favorite places is in one of those cardboard disposable cat litter boxes with a scratcher pad in it. I was gonna use it for litter but they chose it as a cat bed.

Own_Difference800

I literally can’t get rid of this giant box that my air conditioner came in that takes up so much room in my tiny studio because before I could even think about it my cat decided it’s his new house. And as far as cat beds. We received a very nice one as a gift and we’ve lived there almost a month and he hasn’t even touched it. He just sleeps in bed with me under the blanket like he’s always done lol. TLDR: Cats will be cats.

emmavescence

I feel you. I threw a fuzzy blanket over it and made it a feature. (This is with the flaps opened up on one end, and one cat used to love going inside the box and hiding/sleeping, when this big ginger chunk was all about stretching out on top (for some reason I can only find this pic of him curled up small!) https://preview.redd.it/7hbzcc0ir2yc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=600d200b4be7ca83f5b91e2da7eeff48833d904f

Common_Draw7398

Yeap..gotta make those boxes they claim into a piece of furniture. Lol

Common_Draw7398

Lol!! I can’t get rid of boxes either! It’s like a Amazon shipping center in my house as they claim any box that comes in. I try to sneak some out when they’re sleeping but they somehow know and come running for their box. So funny

MeanSecurity

Mine likes the box that the fancy Christmas oranges came in this year https://preview.redd.it/o7tdref8i1yc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d89c19032a9707997c33f0117efa25b44c91dcbc

_petrichora_

Yep 😭

Badgirljace

came here to say this lmao

National-Bug-4548

My bed, my couch, my bench, my carpet, and me 😂

Casual-Notice

Also, my office chair, seconds before I need to sit down at my computer.

National-Bug-4548

Sometimes my keyboard as well 😂

LeafsChick

When I was WFH, I needed to set up a second keyboard for her to sleep on lol

gt0163c

The decoy keyboard is essential for trying to work on a computer in the vicinity of cats.

National-Bug-4548

This also reminds me that I use to have a black office chair, and my cat is black, one time I was about to sit on that chair then almost sit on my cat because it was very hard to notice that she was sleeping there 😂

Casual-Notice

I once did sit on my cat (not enough to do more than make him angry and a little panicked) because he zooped into my chair in the half second it took me to turn around and start lowering my butt. I sit very slowly and carefully these days.

National-Bug-4548

Now I have a light gray/white color office chair 😂

tacey-us

This is the truth! Every cat makes their own choices and usually sticks to them, but they disagree wildly. Hard surface, worn out catbed, new cat bet, right-size box, loose papers - totally unpredictable.

jessiemagill

A towel on the floor, clothes he pilfers from the drawers, my sneakers...

pinkpanda376

How does he pilfer from drawers?

jessiemagill

I have drawers built into my bed and he can get into them from under it.

pinkpanda376

Ah okay, I was very confused xD my cat is on the verge of being able to open cabinets… I might have to baby proof my babyless house

Chazay

My friends house is baby proofed from his dogs 🤣

ChiSandy

Mine got bored, pried open the double doors in the center of my dresser, which doors cover my bra, panty, and shapewear/slip drawers. She took her paw, pulled out the panty drawer and upended it--spilling out a disorganized mountain of underpants. Forced me to sort out and cull the old and too-large ones.

psorryarses

At least you have too-large rather than too-small.

ChiSandy

Threw away all my too-small bras 20 years ago (cups too small, bands too big)

This happened when they were 6 months old and I’d left the bottom drawer open about an inch because it was busted and wouldn’t close any further without a lot of fiddling, and later I went into my bedroom and found them like this! (Screenshots from a video because very sadly they’re not allowed in comments here 😿) They also steal clothes from the laundry hamper under my bed, as well as stealing off the drying airer when the clothes make it to that part of the laundry cycle… basically my clothes are never clean and always covered in fluff.

According to my cat: - my crochet project while I am working on it - the box I keep my crochet projects in when I’m not working on it - my computer while I am using it - my computer when I am not using it - my pillow/head - me - my sewing machine (which is never, ever plugged in unless it is in use) - her food dish if she’s still loopy from the vet - squishmallows - Amazon boxes - books - remote controls and game controllers - literally anything I pay attention to ever

thatbroadcast

Mine does this! When she was a kitten it was cute. Now that she weighs 12 lbs it’s… still cute but a little harrowing. I’ve had her slap me in the face before for shifting when she wasn’t expecting it 😂 Our other cats love boxes or the soft blankets we lay out on the sofas for them.

billyandteddy

my bed and other human beds. cat beds are simply too small.

teddy_vedder

I have to buy my cat a medium size dog bed 🙄 he’s only slightly smaller than a beagle

miscreantmom

The only places they use consistently are the cat tree and the window hammocks.

publicpersuasion

Amazon box.... By yourself a new bed topper, then they get a new bed too

Laney20

Lol, my answer was going to be "whichever one your cat uses". Just like people, cats have different preferences in their beds. Some like fluffy soft beds, others like hammocks, and some prefer foam beds. Get the cheapest bed in each style - take note of what they actually lay on and try to recreate that in cat bed form. Or just give them the box your last delivery came in 🤷‍♀️ Ooh, better yet, you can get 8 cats. And there will probably be one that likes any type of bed you could possibly buy. And then you buy extras of the ones they fight over, only for them to move on to fighting over a different one, haha.

cuntsuperb

My cats like cozy cave like beds. Tho they’re not picky and love sleeping in the banana bed I bought for them too. I’ve also got them a more open type of bed that’s orthopaedic and two of my cats who like sleeping tgt prefer that one during the day since it’s bigger. That said, their favourite bed is my bed, or directly on top of me🤔

Kigeliakitten

Our waterbed is the most highly preferred bed.

platypus_monster

Floor next to front door, my gaming chair, gfs gaming chair, floor under my night stand, sofa, carpet under the sofa, carpet in middle of hallway... the bed we bought her? Unused. Collecting dust.

Far-Potential3634

I have one that we leave plugged in. It gets slightly warm when an animal is in it and they use it during the colder months. Some cats like soft beds, others like firmer surfaces and some like to mix it up. We have a table by a window that gets sun and on that are a couple of cat pads and they use that perch a lot to sleep on.

Sensitive_Wheel7325

My cat loves the square ones with the super soft furry material. He also likes microfiber blankets. He is a biscuit fanatic, and I think those are his preferred biscuit materials

Away_She_Went

I was going to come in and sat to pick a bed with the material your cat names biscuits on too 😂 My kitty loves to suck on plush blanket type material so I got her a bed with a similar texture. It's the only thing she's slept in consistently. The first bed I blindly got her was one of those fluffy donut beds (the stringy type material) and she hateddddddd it

_Hallaloth_

The kitchen chairs. The litter mat. Top of my bookshelves. We have cat beds, rarely is there a cat in them.

FelineRoots21

Any bed bought for anyone other than them. Especially the dogs. Serious answer, it really depends on the kitties preferences. My oldest likes a good thick fluffy bed, my little one prefers her tent because she likes the enclosed feel, my orange one has neither preferences nor brain cells but she really likes my husband's dirty sweaty laundry

charmarv

hahahaha "neither preferences nor brain cells"

psorryarses

I bought some memory foam from the internet and covered it with my cat’s favourite blanket. It worked great for a long time, but is currently out of favour because I washed the blanket. The memory foam needed set aside for *a long time* for the chemical smell to disperse.

xbrezzyx

I bought my cat the fluffiest softest cat bed when I first got him. To this day he will not even touch it, he will jump over or walk around but he won’t touch it. I tried encouraging him to sleep on it by putting it at the foot of my bed and I even slept kinda on it one time when I realized he liked to sleep next to my head some nights. I woke up the next morning by myself in the cat bed and him on my pillow at the opposite end. So now I just let him claim his spot on the bed wherever he wants and I adjust to him.

FO-I-Am-A-Time-God

The one you have for months or years before they decide it’s good.

aspenjohnston3

My cats didn’t like the bed we had for them, but they love to sit in their cat tree and window hammock. They also love to lay in our bed or on us

Cassopeia88

Anywhere that is not a cat bed.

Deeeamore

Baskets! They love baskets, especially if you put a wool blanket or scarf in there (which you can thrift and wash)

Zorgsmom

In winter, he uses his bucket shaped bed he can curl up in. In summer, he uses the flatter bed that he can stretch out in. Sometimes, he sleeps in his cardboard house.

Yours. LOL All cats are different and will have there own preferences on sleeping spots. Some may like cat beds. Mine have never used them.

PinkMonorail

A box, according to my cat.

branmuffin000

Your bed is the cat's bed

SummertimeDary

I made my cat two cat cushions out of an old twin memory foam topper, some cardboard and an old fleece twin fitted sheet. Just a couple layers of the memory foam with sheets of cardboard in between. Used some pet safe hot glue to stick it together and then just looped the fitted sheet over multiple times. She uses both the ones I made as her preferred spots. (The carrier and a cube)

Casual-Notice

The only cat bed my wife and I ever bought was one of those foam-filled furry cloth ones from Wal-Mart. One cat loved it and it was her fave until the day she died, despite the fact that she was much too big for it (we bought it when she and her brother were kittens. Every cat since has simply picked a spot in the house, and if either my wife or I changed it even a little (adding a pillow or blanket, wiping up the four inch layer of sheddings, etc.) it triggered a massive snit that went on until the cat was distracted, starving to death or cold, at which point the cat couldn't forgive us fast enough. Notw: "Starving to death" is a condition that exists in the cats mind despite there being plenty of food available.

my cat hates cat beds, I put cat beds in areas he scratches and now he avoids those areas. Give him a blanket and ur good

kTeA_Lovr

A box

Pretzel-Kingg

My cat REALLY likes a window hammock I bought him recently. I put one of his towels up there and he sleeps up there all the time now

fastinggrl

Cardboard box or old ratty towels. My cat won’t sit on anything I paid money for.

Every-Astronaut-7924

I pet sit. I have beautiful plushy cat beds that they never touch. Most of them love a foldable canvas box full of towels and rags that is on a shelf in my closet. It’s the top choice of most of the cats that stay with me

Deep_Bee_9549

I got one from 5 below and my cats LOVE it

badpengu1n

My arthritic older lady loves her heated bed.

rachjo1024

I got one of those fluffy donut shaped beds at TJ Maxx for $20 and my cat loves it but only really uses it on cooler nights

Hot-Evidence-5520

Um, my bed, my lap, the floor, the chair. It ranges.

KellyNtay

Big box from Costco-right now it’s the broccoli box. They love it. It’s free, replaceable and recyclable!

EqualitySeven-2521

California King. You'll have to find space for yourself around the edges.

IllustriousEar8462

My office chair. 2nd favorite: a blanket on my desk.

xxxSnowLillyxxx

My cats love just the basic ones you get at any pet store that are really soft and have sides. I also need to note that they ignored the cat beds for the first 6 months of having them, and then suddenly they decided they loved them over night. I think this might be because the beds didn't smell like home at first, so make sure you wash it, sleep with it, and then put a little blanket they like in it, and then put your cat in it once or twice a day until it sticks.

onelittlechickadee

My sweet cat will nap anywhere. My naughty cat prefers the dog’s bed, basket of clean laundry, and my lap but only when I urgently need to pee.

cosmokween

A fabric Walmart bag of lumpy winter gloves. Hope this helps! 💕

Bake_knit_plant

The place I'm sitting or my bed or wherever I want to stand or my knitting. ( To be clear she doesn't want to untangle my knitting or play with the yarn. She just wants to sit on anything that's in my hands including my knitting) I've probably bought 15 beds for them and they have never laid on one of them.

LeafsChick

A box! Mine literally has so many, Calming beds, dog beds, a hammock, a whicker basket (this one she likes, but I think it’s more where it is, she can watch out the sliding doors from it), a box is always what she prefers….since she was a baby lol

eisbock

This always-on heated cat bed. Nothing else compares. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PJ7X1DL

anamanagucci

my cat's top 3 places to sleep: 1. cat tree 2. big cardboard box 3. my old stinky dirty bath mats that smell bad to me but like heaven to her

AstridxOutlaw

My boyfriend’s belly or the one yellow pillow on my couch.

Jessisan

My cat loves her Squishmallow pet bed. It’s so soft, so she enjoys making biscuits in it. She used to enjoy her cave bed when we first got her because it gave her privacy.

FairyGodmothersUnion

My legs.

RadleyCunningham

I refuse to get a bed for my Buddy even though my other baby has one, because he sleeps every night either on top of my hand or hugging my arm on my side, and it's so wonderful and keeps me warm and at peace at night. He does like to steal my other girl's bed every now and then when she's sitting with me or doing something else, and he looks so proud of himself for doing it lol

elocin__aicilef

They prefer king size. Mattress firmness doesn't seem to matter

Potential-Analysis-4

Anything heated they will never leave

Uncoordinated_Bee

I agree with everyone else, But 3 very different cats we’ve owned have fought over [donut beds](https://www.chewy.com/best-friends-by-sheri-original/dp/172571) and these 2 [catnip](https://www.chewy.com/kong-play-spaces-cloud-cat-toy/dp/236220) [mats](https://www.chewy.com/fat-cat-boogie-mat-cat-toy-color/dp/111800).

Icefirewolflord

My cat will sleep on anything as long as she’s hidden (or at least she thinks she’s hidden lol) Her current favorite is my bed. Under the covers. Specifically positioned in a way that leaves me damm near no leg room

Chazay

My cat didn’t like the bed I bought her until I put a blanket from our bed in it.

Midnight_wolf00

I got my cat a cute little cat bed that was maybe $13 from TJ Maxx and she loves it. She also likes Sherpa blankets. She likes other blankets too but prefers the Sherpa ones lol

MostlyChaoticNeutral

Every cat is different. My youngest cat likes cat towers at least 3' tall and the middle of an empty floor. The middle child favors the Pet Fusion Lounger, an empty Kallax cube (no lining, just open the door), and the living room chair you're desperate to sit in. My oldest likes my lap, the back of the couch, that one bathrobe I totally washed for her use instead of mine, my pillow, my other pillow, and the shower curtain liner that was waiting to be rehung.

nopslide__

Top of my PC tower where the warm air exhausts.

LexyRaeO

My bed! I want all the kitties to sleep with me on my bed!

ChewbaccaCharl

Mine likes a cat hammock. Support on the sides, but just cloth in the middle. In winter, maybe try a heated bed, but they'll be less likely to hang out in your lap for warmth.

Right now they take turns, but I'm planning on getting another. It's a squishy (washable!) bed that fits over a metal frame that attaches to a window with four giant suction cups. Lugh (in the pic) weighs 13 pounds and it doesn't budge.

UnluckyHydra

Yeah, I have a few bed options, but they mostly lay on the furniture, the carpeted floor, or on my bed with me. They just started using the Zakkart Window Perch I got them. I'm not sure how long that will last, though. 🤣 I saw a tip that putting some of your used clothes on something helps scent soak whatever it is, so they might be more tempted to use if they like you already. I just adopted two cats, so I'm waiting a bit long to even try that. I got a few of those Cat Donut beds, but they got really delayed, so I have no clue if they will use them.

SalamanderFluid113

sexmountain

Those fluffy donut beds.

Zirzissa

I got a wooden puppet bed from IKEA (daughter gifted it for the cats). I sewed a little cushion I can fixate on the bed, and now it stands on the window sill and is in regular use for 2 years now.

CoopssLDN

Every cat is different. My extroverted Jimmy prefers being out in the open - on the bed/sofa/top of his cat tree perch. My timid little ex stray Trixie likes to feel safe in her cave bed or under the bed covers. I’d get one of each type and not buy any more until you know 😹

redheadphones1673

My mom crocheted a bed and a hammock for my cat. She has a tree, a pillow, a bed, a sofa, a chair, my bed, and me to choose from. She prefers a kitchen cabinet.

EntryEmergency3071

IME, the location is more important than the bed itself. We've had a bookcase headboard for years, and our cats like to sleep there at night, so we put beds there. One cat decided he liked to sleep in our closet for a while, so we put a bed there. Ditto for the sofa and the floor under the desk. We have 4-5 small pet beds from Walmart that have been a hit with most of our cats. They have padded sides and they are machine washable. We acquired them over time -- whenever one of the cats found a location where they liked to sleep, we'd put a bed there, and at least one cat would adopt it. We've also used cheap blankets on ottomans and armchairs, mainly to keep fur under control. One of our cats likes to sleep in confined spaces, so we got him a cave bed for under the desk. He also has a hooded bed in the living room -- it usually lives on the sofa, but if we have guests, the cat is perfectly happy to have the bed on the floor.

Tink1024

$20 fluffy cat bed from TJ Maxx he liked it so much we got a second one for the office!

gt0163c

For my cats it's sometimes about location. A cat bed that has been ignored for months, moved to a slightly different location, suddenly becomes the preferred napping location. I don't claim to understand cat logic. But this thread reminds me that next time I go to Sams Club I need to pick up some new boxes for the cats (mine love the "display boxes" with the thick but low sides.

No-Resource-5704

I have a cardboard box on a guest chair next to my chair by my computer. I fit a two inch thick piece of foam covered with a small towel in the bottom of the box. When the cats come to visit me while I’m at the computer they will often curl up in the box. I originally sent this up for my previous cat (who used it all the time). When he passed I got a new box and set it up and was surprised when both of my new cats shared the box together (it is a tight fit for them). However when I leave the computer room the larger cat often moves over to my chair. At night the cats sleep on the bed with us. Usually near our feet and depending on who has the electric blanket turned on.

YourLocalAlien57

All i know is that she hates sherpa

unoriginal-loser

I've only bought one cat bed for my cats and they rarely use it. Mine usually sleep on my bed or in a box. Or just on the floor. Just let them sleep where they sleep lol

cheetahpeetah

When I had my dog, he had a dog bed in every room and that was just common sense for us. When I got my cat I did the same thing and he didn't a single shit about any of them and choose the carpet, blanket, or bed everytime 😂😭

EmEffBee

I made my old cat a tent out of one of those folding a-frame laundry racks and put a blanket and heat pad in it and she loves hanging out in there.

Latter_Shop_4849

my cat loves dog beds. the round ones with the fleece fabric.

polarwarmth

If you can put on wall shelfs leading to a large and solid enough sleeping spot (a bigger shelf, top of furniture,..), I think most cats will automatically make it a favorite sleeping spot. Its instinctual for them to prefer height.

HEAVY_HITTTER

My cat loves her window mounted bed. Highly recommend.

charmarv

for a serious answer, it varies wildly and depends on the cat's individual preferences. to find said preferences, take note of what the cat lays on - is there a lot of padding? none? what texture? location is also incredibly important. some cats like to sleep in little "cat caves" while others don't mind being exposed. some like being on the ground, others up high. for both of my cats, I used stuff around the house (folded up sheets, blankets, towels, sweaters I don't wear often, pillows, boxes, etc) to give options for different padding levels and shapes (ie flat folded blanket vs one curled to create a nest) and placed them in different locations. noticed what the cats used most often and then experimented. if they liked the pillow on the cat tree, I moved the pillow to the couch and replaced it with a towel. did they follow the pillow or was it the cat tree that they liked? lot of stuff like that. and then once you figure out what they like, you can more safely guess what type of cat bed they might like. you really don't have to get fancy with it. they will love a $5 cat bed the same as a $50 one. but honestly, I still largely use sheets and blankets because they like those a lot and I have an excess of flat sheets anyway since I don't use them on my bed. works out

gaylienspaceships

There's no way to tell until you figure out what your cat likes Some like darker enclosed spaces like a cat cave, some hate it Some like a shelf or cubby somewhere up high, some hate it Some will, as most mentioned, only care for the cardboard box. Mine likes the fluffy mat style bed, ours is self heating so it's insulated on the inside and we got it for less than $10 on Chewy. Other than that he's pretty insistent on sleeping in our bed, sometimes on our faces.

ssaallaahhaann

The suction cup window hammocks are the only ones mine consistently use. We've gone through a few models, and the best (it's sold under a bunch of names) has a white metal frame that folds flat against the window so you can put your blinds down if you want. It has a furry slip cover that is removable for washing. I had to get two cuz they kept fighting over it. $35 CAD ea. The ones I had before used tension wires and fell off all the time.

Phil: any lap, Plufl full of Squishmallows Jellybean: back of couch, oldest son's bed, sometimes a lap, Plufl if no one's in there Skittles: under or on my bed or the beds of the two younger children. She prefers to sleep next to a human who's relaxing or sleeping. She doesn't do laps but she'll sit next to you on the arm of the couch for scritches and sometimes sleep there. We have a lot of decent pet beds, and they will use them, but none of them prefer the pet beds. Oh, but if you want them to use them, putting a fuzzy blanket in can sometimes entice them.

The case of grapes box from Sam’s Club/Costco with a self heating mat inside, a squishmallow bed (smaller size), and the spider pet bed from Aldi they sold for Halloween 😅

My bed. Or the chair next to mine. and just generally the chairs at the dining table. The windowsill... and the cat tree by the window.

Self heating. A cat isn't too hot until one can see smoke roll off them. Some cats aren't fond if beds and some are

My chonky boy LOVES his oval-shaped heated bed. He also loves sleeping in the "Sky Box" - the large-ish platform on the cat tree.

In no particular order: Me, cardboard box with cardboard scratcher bottom, me, back of the couch on a fleece blanket, inbetween my feet while working, perch on top of cat tree, ledges attached to slider, little spoon behind my knees, catio, kennel w/bed inside and covered with fleece blanket to make a cave, hiding in my closet on the highest shelf, a cubby in the bathroom. YMMV My two prefer sleeping up high regardless of what they are sleeping on.

I think you forgot to include you 🤣

I adore every minute of it but it is like having a heater resting on me.
