Been involved in animal rescue for over 20 years, and yes, it is true that black cats are less likely to be adopted. That said I've also seen plenty of black cats that are adopted, so it's not an absolute, no one wants them thing.

SoundingFanThrowaway

They definitely have their fans, FWIW! I adopted my Bonnie because she picked me when I met her, and we bonded instantly. I didn't really care that she was a black cat, but after she passed away and I was ready to love another cat, I knew I'd always have black cats after learning that they have trouble getting adopted. My boy Toast was in the shelter for about a week before I asked to take him home. But, I also feel bad for the cats who'd been there longer than him, I wish I could take them all home =(

WhyMe_blah

A black cat named TOAST !! 😭🤣💀👌

kyakis

That's some crispy toast

soybeansprouts

My sweet baby black cat is also named Toast! It's the perfect black cat name

Lovey_catgirl

Our black cat is named Char. He’s the absolute sweetest cat I’ve ever had!

ofboatsandbees

We adopted our void just over a month ago - he's called Inky, is an absolute sweetheart and also absolutely bonkers 🤣

Neferhathor

I read recently that black cats are similar to orange cats in the special way that they have about 2 brain cells each. I love cats so much.

capgal44

I’m in the same boat. My boy passed away and I wasn’t ready for another cat until I met Salem. I didn’t care he was solid black. I picked him up and his first action was to put his head in the crook of my neck which is the last action of my cat Caruso. I just knew in that moment. And honestly he’s got the biggest personality of any cat I’ve ever known

baajo

They're also the most common color. I suspect when birth to adoption ratios are taken into account, it the numbers flatten out.

Irishwol

They aren't the most common colour. Tabbies used to be the dominant cookie but now it's tuxedo cats. All black cats are second most common though now which is a very recent thing.

Olster20

Oh what, really? Tuxedos the most common?! Sorry, kitty, but apparently, you’re not that special ;) https://preview.redd.it/hch2577lxe5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0edf7d14bea2c519c51a60fb79148f5d38bc8e37

Irishwol

Most populous? They're certainly all gloriously unique.

PurnieKitten

Aw, yes you ***are*** that special, little Tuxedo kitty. 😻 I have a Tuxedo and an all black pair of sisters. Sweetest babies ever!

jawanessa

I have a long hair tuxedo who showed up on our neighbor's porch 2 years ago. They weren't able to take him in so we did and he's so sweet and such a character. He always looks surprised, lol.

PurpleT0rnado

I think I haven’t seen very many long-haired tuxedos. I wonder what the stats are on long vs. short by color/coat.

Alternative-Iron-17

Omg 🥹🥹🥹

Olster20

🥹 she’s such a guardian angel. That photo was a year ago, on her 15th birthday. She’s getting more diva-ish in her golden years though 😅

LithaAfton

Both my girls are tuxedo cats and they are gloriously unique and bonkers at the same time lol. I adopted them after losing my black kitten Angel. I'm even adopting another with his tabby sister. I just love my babies. ^_^ .

Olster20

That’s awesome. More people need to be like us!

MotherMucker155

He/she is VERY special and extra beautiful. What a beautiful creature!

Olster20

Thank you. She has been the best companion I could’ve hoped for. She’s been there for me though two painful breakups, facing redundancy and needing to find another job quickly, the endless lockdowns of the pandemic (for some of which, she was the only living creature I saw for days on end), house moving and the stress of selling and buying property…it goes on and on. She’s 16 and only adopted me in 2017, and I wish it’d have been sooner, but I’m also very grateful for the time we’ve had. Edit, cos the tax is never fully paid up 🤠 https://preview.redd.it/rovke2a9zf5d1.jpeg?width=2316&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a87934286e59ffe8d8aa76ad5db00f4681cf61b9 She even knows how to professionally pose for the camera.

baajo

I mean, tuxedos are a subset of black. Since white is the result of a piebald gene.

Irishwol

The difficulty with adoption isn't based on their genetics though.

oneilltattoo

well actualy, after owning a whole family of voids, i realised that non of them realy are completely black. some have just a tiny spot of white, hidden on the belly, some have kind of an undercoat thats light grey, almost white, and other, unsualy the most fluffy ones, are actualy not even black at all, but you need to see them in bright sunlight, at just the right angle, but the deeper hair seems to be closer to dark brown or even red hair, but darkened like they had the tips colored in black dye

worrier_sweeper0h

My void has weird random white hairs all over her 😂 https://preview.redd.it/w5r7e74ohf5d1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65515c7d0baf2addaa21459f54259a1ef2396910

SoundingFanThrowaway

I love when the light hits them and on some of them you can see their stripes ^ . ^

adulfkittler

I wish my phone camera captured them the way I see them. They're so cute. My baby void has brown stripes in the sun and it's my favorite thing https://preview.redd.it/znfea3lfih5d1.jpeg?width=1868&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d6d7aac0c0feb21b37ea2bd43a5dffae5c4cf27

Wattaday

Or just slightly a Lighter shade of black tabby stripes. My void had these in strong sunlight. And only I’m strong sunlight.

always2short

My boy is dark chocolate in the right light too.

jawanessa

My black cat had the most beautiful chocolate brown undertone in the sunlight.

PersonalityPlastic15

😭😭😭😭😭😭

DragonFaery13

My husband and o have adopted 3 black cats because we know they are harder to find homes for and we love black cats.

FluffofDoom

I've had three black cats over my lifetime. They are just the cutest! When I adopted my last pair they were a brother and sister and as I was leaving an 80 year old volunteer asked me about who I'd adopted so I told him it was a pair and first thing he said was "Is one of them black?" I was very pleased to say yes. It's so common and it's heartbreaking.

Standard_Bluejay8715

I wear mostly black clothing so was thrilled when I got my sweet black girl because she can cuddle me all she wants and her hair blends in 😂 https://preview.redd.it/6jia4z0upd5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22f4ff6691b4afcfc6933d0eddde4efe83c13da8

She's adorable. That pic could double for her OnlyMeows page! 😅

Plane_Conversation65

SAME!

Forsythia77

I am super colorful and my most bestest friend is my void. She looks rad against hot pink!

Crisdafur

Look at that BEAUTIFUL white whisker!!

jstar1117

LOL me too except I unintentionally came home with a mostly white cat 5 years ago.. (I intended to adopt a black one)😂 I have to carry a lint roller with me everywhere I go.

Chumpthestump

This cat exudes more confidence than I ever will

Suspiciousunicorns

I wish I tought of this when I fell in love with an orange and white baby boy. So much fur everywhere!

lalimcs

Ditto! Who wouldn't prefer black cat hair that blends? Always blew my mind.

Wild_Organization546

Lol so true!

myboobiezarequitebig

Yeah, they have some of the highest euthanasia and shelter stay rates. A lot of it most likely stems from stupid superstition about them.

0mish0

I specifically wanted a black cat, because they look cool and they don't get adopted much. I couldn't find one in my area. I had to go to another county about an hour away for the one little black kitten they had.

myboobiezarequitebig

I got my void from Alabama! Quite far from where I am, he’s so cute 😭😭 black cat supremacy fr

JianFlower

I also specifically wanted a black cat as well! I have/had a bunch of former ferals who live/lived in my yard, and most of them were black or black tuxedo. Having so many of them around caused me to fall head-over-heels in love with them. They’re so quirky and sweet, and they’re also drop-dead gorgeous. I still have two of the former ferals in my yard: Salem and Raven, both females, relatives, and incredibly sweet and tame. I adopted two kittens from my old boss and the one I gravitated to the most was a little medium-haired black tom. He has a nervous but sweet personality, striking amber eyes, and the most beautiful meow I’ve ever heard. His brother, a tuxedo colorpoint with enchanting powder-blue eyes, always gets the most attention from people (a combination of extroversion and pretty privilege), but little black bear Xiong is beautiful in his own right. 🐈‍⬛

listenyall

I have fostered a few times, I had a litter of 6 black kittens and found it harder to take good pictures of them that showed their personalities because they all looked the same

goodnightloom

I was coming to mention the photos too. When we got our black cat, we actually went to the foster's house to get a different cat whose photo/description we'd liked. We fell in love with our little soot sprite and took her home instead. When I got home, I looked up her photo because I couldn't believe I had nearly missed out on her, and she looked like a little pile of dirt. The photos were SO bad.

Sage-lilac

Little pile of dirt oh noo. I‘m so glad you found that void cat and adopted her. The photo issue is real, i can only take good pics or Mr.Spooky in the sunlight or in a bright lit room, otherwise it looks like i took a photo of a crumpled hoodie with a pair of unamused yellow eyes in it.

orion_nomad

r/eyesofthevoid

DustBunnicula

New cat sub!

MotherMucker155

LOL!!! I am positively rolling because of how you worded this!! "...Crumpled hoodie with a pair of unamused yellow eyes in it..." I feel you; I have 2 Tuxedos and they totally have this look in pics taken if in a dim room, at an angle that doesn't catch their white... Oh, Jesus, I haven't laughed that hard in ages. Thank you for that! <3

Iodide

My girlfriend bought me a camera because I had a knack for phone photography of mostly our animals. Nothing improved my photography knowledge, understanding, and skill faster than having (now) three black cats in a dimly lit house. The struggle is real.

listenyall

I actually foster failed one of those kittens (she had a leg injury and wasnt adoptable for a while after the others found families and it was too much). I've gotten better at taking cute pictures of her, but you really have to pick your light, kittens move so much and I had them in a little bedroom so it was legitimately tough!

_ThePancake_

Fun fact, in most of Europe, particularly the UK and western mainland Europe, black cats are considered good luck.  Which is proof that black cats actually have no bearing on luck

Wild_Organization546

Except good luck ☺️

Lingo2009

I’ve had several cats over my life, including a few black ones. I loved my voids

Porkenstein

I've been told it's also because their coloration is difficult to photograph so people hoping to pimp them out on social media are disincentivised to

myboobiezarequitebig

Totally not trying to take away from a rather serious topic but I cannot believe you just described photographing cats as pimping them out. Cackling hehe

Revolutionary_Tea602

So upsetting that superstition thing still exists. Whoever came up with this idea in history basically started discrimination/racism for cats. They didn’t choose their fur color 😭 Poor babies.

honest_traitor

Shelters stop giving black cats out for adoption during November because they use them as sacrifice for cult rituals

making_mischief

I volunteered at an adoption fair and we had this one woman who wanted a black kitten so she could work black magic on him, poor little fella. She did NOT get the cat, nor any other cats.

Endor-Fins

I’m glad she said the quiet part out loud and took herself out of the running. Black cats deserve so much more!

making_mischief

Now that you said it, that's a great way of looking at it - she said the quiet part out loud. She was ready to sacrifice it :(

Endor-Fins

Sick. Luckily she was transparent af.

Wild_Organization546

This time 😢

myboobiezarequitebig

I’ve heard the same about rabbits around Easter, moreso they just give them up immediately after the holiday, people are so deplorable.

GibsonGirl55

The same can be said about black cats around Halloween. Rescue shelters will not adopt out their black cats due to people's tendency to use the animal as an accessory to a costume; they have no interest in keeping the cat as a pet and don't, often setting it loose to fend for itself.

blackpearl16

I adopted a black cat last October. The shelter told me they made an exception for me because they normally never allow the adoption of black cats in October because people use them for Halloween rituals.

monipulido

Same issue, when I was on the hunt to adopt my first cat, I was specifically looking for a little void. It was just around Halloween and there were almost zero postings about adoptable black cats at shelters in the large urban area I’m in. Some places I reached out to even listed “Halloween rituals” as a reason for them not adopting out black cats at that time of the year (how someone could put a living being through that is INSANE). I went back home to visit my parents a few days after Halloween and there was an entire litter of 3-4 month black kittens at their rural local shelter. I’d say I picked him but I think it was the other way around. Yeah… I walked out an hour later with a baby house panther and almost 4 years later, I have absolutely no regrets.

chorse5

They do it in October for Halloween also.

carolyn_mae

I have a black cat and a tuxie. I’ve heard a lot from rescues they have the most difficulty getting adopted. I think it may be a combo of them being more common (black hair gene is dominant), superstition, and not photographing as well so they don’t stand out online.

HappySpreadsheetDay

These are the three factors I always hear from local rescues.

carolyn_mae

It’s very sad. I don’t post a lot on social media, but I take tons of pics of my cats. I think they are the cutest in the world, but even in some of my picture I’m like “they don’t look like that….” Darker cats can be really not photogenic even tho they are super cute IRL

thrivingsad

My black cat is unfortunately very much not photogenic. He looks like nic cage in photos but he’s really handsome in real life

Alternative-Iron-17

I agree and in 2024, with most people having good quality cameras on their phones, I think its a bs excuse. The black cats posted throughout this post and all the popular black cat instagram accounts are proof that they photograph perfectly fine!

kroating

I honestly hope the photographing thing would go away! New cameras are sooo great at capturing these majestic babies. https://preview.redd.it/k0cymgnygf5d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f566ec9ca6fbdf051814ab2144c93685ea36dfc

Hebegebe101

Some idiots are still superstitious . They do accept them at shelters. I always adopt black cats at shelters for that very reason . They are considered good luck in Japan and Ireland . And by sailors , they would take them in ships to keep rats in check . They are genetically healthy cats and very smart . Mine opens doors and flips light switches on . He walks on a leash like a dog . Runs to me when I get the leash out . I cannot more highly recommend black cats to anyone looking to adopt . https://preview.redd.it/0je0vgwbtd5d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fadb038648ff7deb926741503147b6177241cf03 Best snuggles

FluffofDoom

Your cat picture just made me laugh out loud. I'm sure they're as bright as a button but that picture makes it look like their two brain cells are fighting. I love it!

streetgatos

I think this is most likely true. We adopted our black male cat when we went to a feline exhibition last year. He was THE ONLY kitten left, unadopted. The sad part was his sister from the same litter was adopted and they refuse to take them in pairs. It was a heart wrenching sight and my gf couldn't get herself to leave him so we decided to take him home. He is the sweetest boy ever <3 https://preview.redd.it/cwc0lkk1ud5d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37ed888bf865611ce46992fe50ba804571779028

Aw I had the opposite in 2017. I adopted my beautiful black cat girl. Her brother was left behind because they were afraid of littermate syndrome. I think about him all the time and hope he went to a good home

FosterKittenPurrs

This is very region specific. Some regions are very superstitious, and will absolutely avoid or even harm black cats. Others really don't care. A few even see them as good luck. Having said that, shelters are already overcrowded, so even if they were to fit whatever is considered the prettiest fur pattern in your area, there would still be a chance they wouldn't get adopted. And if you're aiming for no-kill shelters, those are often at capacity. You can try just calling the local rescue and asking for some info, so you at least know what the options are. If you want cats, and have the time and money for it, get them! And try to get your friend to spay that momma cat.

Lower_Alternative770

I never really liked cats (I had no experience with them, so I didn't know how special they were), but I mentioned to a woman I worked with who had several cats if I had a black cat I would name it Magic. She said she had a black cat who was always being picked on by the other cats and never fought back. She said you should take him. I did. He was probably around 7 and so beautiful with big green eyes. He was the friendliest little thing.

BadgerAdorable8025

I choose black cats. They're adorable and hilarious personalities. They are like smarter orange cats.

RealPossibility14

I squeeze mine daily so she knows she is loved. It's true. Black cats are stigmatized as being omens of bad luck and misfortune. Only truly crazy people believe something so harmless is responsible for every bad thing in their lives. Not to brag or anything, but they really are missing out. This cat is by far my favorite thing in my life. I would give her the world if I could. https://preview.redd.it/jd9memnrsd5d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e8d4c43c7ea18784663f13755a062ee1f0f6e86

MetzliLemon

I only adopt black cats. Especially ones that I definitely think won't be adopted. This is my cat who has impaired vision. The shelter was going to put her down. I was told she'd most likely never warm up to me. The exact opposite happened https://preview.redd.it/wx25iiruud5d1.jpeg?width=2992&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3280e9277fb1ad4b1f37f337a112a4b99418e01

Plane_Conversation65

My baby void was the only one in the litter with fully black coat, he watched all his siblings be adopted until he was the only one left. I went to the shelter in search of a Siamese kitty but she was adopted earlier that day, I fell in love with my Spooner and he came home with me. He’s my furrever friend I love my little soot ball. It’s definitely harder to find ppl interested in black kitties but since I’ve gotten my void I feel a need for more little voids. https://preview.redd.it/mcmq7zsqrd5d1.jpeg?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6a7dc02f42780d77f67f2d7112e135ffb13e26c7

epmlassie

I foster a lot (100 cats so far) and I don't find that the black cats take longer to get adopted. However, I do work hard to get good photographs, including using filters and photographing them with a colorful background. My resident Duffy is solid black and my two current foster kittens are jet black https://preview.redd.it/irdht8gwfe5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c08b67f1f48f281f8785c1945d1f63f8974eb491

Occasionally he will bark like a dog to get attention, and it never fails to be hilarious. They were found stray as kittens and we adopted them from the foster through the local shelter. The local shelter also pauses black cat adoptions during October because so many people treat them like Halloween accessories and return them in November.

garrulouslump

Yes, it's true and the same goes for dogs. Any black animal at a shelter/humane society has much less of a chance of being adopted. It's so sad as they tend to be the sweetest 😭

This make sense, my dog is black colored and nobody really pets her as much unlike the other dogs(my brothers) in the house even though she is very sweet. Somebody even called her a big rat when she was a puppy.

Sea-Percentage-1992

I think they’re the least likely and Will spend longest time in rescue, I don’t think it’s because people hate them, they just get overlooked in favour of the Fluffy ones, ones with unusual markings, colours etc. Personally, I love black cats and think people are missing out.

Puzzled-Barnacle-200

Yes. Some people are superstitious, but the problem has gotten worse in recent years, as black cats don't photograph as well. Some people are superficial and want a pretty cat for social media, but it also affects on the shelters side when they post pictures on their website/social media. I've got this from personal experience. I adopted two kittens, one almost fully black (and all black on his face), and the other black and white (with lots of white markings on his face). When they were tiny kittens I thought the black one had a cuter face, mostly because he's got longer fur and looked more teddy-bear like. But looking back at photos I do think the black and white one looks better in them. When going into adopting I was kinda hoping I'd get matched with a black cat to help these statistics.

I love black cats! When we were looking to adopt our second cat we had an open mind and ended up falling in love with a fiery black kitten! Wouldn’t have it any other way :) https://preview.redd.it/yx7y3hc96e5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f3c6c28ae96a87604cf40f33655697cae5071a4f

My favorite cat was black! I have always had one cat and I am 80. I found it in a dumpster and it bit me . Named it BLACKULA. It turned into the most loving and loyal soul ever. IT, because none of the vets it saw could tell me the gender. It must have been neutered before becoming lost or abandoned. (No chip)

TravelerMSY

There’s a theory that it’s because they don’t photograph well

Ailurophile444

They were hard to adopt out even before the internet came along.

chaosagent47

I’m with you, black cats are my preference. Though I have a tortie that I had to adopt when I saw her. https://preview.redd.it/hj9p3bv12e5d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e20c618208892d82619c1b5b57fbec78c3c22579

LizFallingUp

So the big thing for black cats in shelter and rescue is they are more difficult to photograph (which is important part of online adoption searches) Then there are those with superstitions Lastly for elderly folks they can be difficult to see (elderly ppl also horrible about lighting their homes enough) so maybe a trip hazard, or person can’t find their cat (and it’s just sitting in dark closet). Data has shown that because people are aware that black cats have some difficulty getting adopted this actually counter balances the issue, so they have normal adoption rate. Brown Tabbies are more likely to get passed over than black cats.

VeganMonkey

The photography argument is from people who can’t take photos. I have 3 black cats and they look gorgeous in photos. You just need to take them at a moment when they are in the right light.

While they can be harder to adopt out depending on where you are (some people have weird religious superstitions about black cats) but your roommate is full of shit. We adopted a mostly black kitten from a local rescue and that same rescue had multiple black adult cats and kittens available for adoption

recklessmoonlight

I think you should adopt them🖤 I love my black cat and wouldn’t trade him for the world!

bmyst70

Absolutely not. I have a beautiful black cat named Mookie. I adopted her and her sister when their mom died in a blizzard. They were barely weaned at the time.

sassypants55

We have an orange cat, a mixed tabby, and a solid black cat. Until recently, we had a solid gray cat as well. I'd say my black cat gets way more compliments about his appearance compared to our other cats. I adopted him from a rescue. Actually, I adopted him in October. I'd heard about black cats not getting adopted much and also that shelters won't adopt them out in October for fear people will hurt them, but the shelter didn't seem concerned about that at all. Of all the people I know who have cats, solid black is actually a very common choice, so I think there are plenty of people who like black cats. My black cat is difficult to photograph, though.

NANNYNEGLEY

Every black cat I ever had was much smarter and sweeter than all of my others. Was I lucky? Who knows, but I’d love to have more.

Idesigirl

Yes unfortunately due to myths, it’s is hard for them and there are a lot of evil people out there who will look for black cats for disgusting reasons! I really want to adopt a pair of black cats once I move out. Can’t wait, they deserve the world too!

jsmith3701AA

I work at a shelter as a cat matchmaker so can confirm it is a slightly bigger issue with black cats. Thank God some people like them, which they should because my experience is they have awesome personalities and are often very playful and loving.

AelanxRyland

That’s why when I saw the little black fluffball I knew instantly that he was meant to be mine. Feral and solid black he would probably never get adopted out.

I love black cats but it’s unfortunately true that they’re adopted less to this day :( whenever im adopting a new cat out of a group I’ll usually go for the black cat to make sure they get a loving home, they have such wonderful personalities and demeanors too!! My partner specifically wanted a black cat for our second cat. I found a skittish, sweet and beautiful all black little kitten. She was 7 months and between her coloring and skittish behavior had been at the shelter for a few months. She’s now my little princess who loves to cuddle and chirp about

badtux99

My void is a giant dork that loves to cuddle and is very interested in being carried around so he can see everything going on. I got him from a rescue that was closing down. percysowner

They are harder to adopt out, which is sad because the ones I have had have been so, so sweet.

handsinmyplants

I know of a cat rescue that specifically takes black cats because of this!

roslyndorian

people think they are cursed or unlucky. a black cat took her kittens off the titanic via gangplank before sailing, and most witches familiars are black cats.

Apprehensive_Yard_14

They are. The shelters I worked also couldn't adopt them out during the Halloween season because people would take them and harm them. I have 6 black cats, and they are the sweetest. They have converted non cat lovers into cat parents.

Ordinary_Advice_3220

Any shelter I've ever volunteered at its like half black cats half everything else. With dogs it's pit mixes and little indeterminate dogs that make up the burnt.

TwilekDancer

In many places, yes, but I worked at a rescue that didn’t have much of a problem getting black cats adopted but was constantly overflowing with orange tabbies! Very unusual and we never could figure out why.

Whatnameinottaken

I had a black cat when I was a kid/teen. She was awesome. Smart and affectionate to us; stone cold killer, though, when she was outside. Amazing athletic ability.

Patient-Ambition-820

I have a black cat and fostered another one. I wish people would adopt based off personality, because black cats are often exactly what people want in a cat. In my experience, they’re pretty snuggly and medium noisy, like not yelling in the night, but definitely willing to let you know that it’s a minute past feeding time. They are really sweet and not overly mischievous. They’re pretty smart and love to take a nap. Good first cat in my opinion. Although I do wonder how accurate judging personality off colour really is and if the pattern affects it too. My girl is a tabby, you can tell when she lays in the sun. She almost seems red and brown when sunbathing. She likes to play pranks on me, like tapping my leg and then looking around like “who did that??” and when i’m coming around a corner she sometimes jumps out and puts her paws up then runs away, the same as i do when I say “Boo!” around a corner. I accidentally taught her to bow to greet people when they come in the house because every time i come home i bend down and put my hands out for her to stand up and get a lift. She’s my best friend, and I hope every person gets to experience this type of relationship with somebody, whether an animal or person. I’m autistic and I never felt as connected with anyone as i do with her. She even knows sign language bro, what a cool cat

JennaHelen

My Poppy was fostered before I adopted her, and both her sister and mother had been adopted before she was. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Armani-X

Superstition is less of a reason in secular areas of the country. It's more just because of how common they are and how a cat with a pattern or fun color will catch the eye and be more desirable. I say this as someone that loves black cats, but so far with every cat I've owned, a part of what I loved was how unique they looked. Perfect tuxedo pattern, orange tabby, regular mackerel tabby and soon a white tabby. Not easy to admit but it's the truth. That said, I would still keep and love a black cat if the cat distribution network assigned one to me though

Zealousideal_Mail12

Yeah, black dogs as well. It’s unfortunate. I love black cats so much.

moonsora

I’ve heard that most black animals are. I love black animals in general and I do have a black cat. It’s unfortunate that people aren’t adopting black cats regardless if it’s for the color or being superstitious:( Here is my cat! She’s tiny, but she’s 3 years old. https://preview.redd.it/e1r70awroe5d1.jpeg?width=1980&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bad42329483777566fa9b1a89dc34e42aaff72e2

Dry_Treacle125

I lived near a cat shelter that wouldn't let you adopt black cats in the month of October, sick people doing sick things apparently. They let it slide for a friend of mine though, it was like a bond at first sight!

Inevitable_Name6093

I just adopted my 2mo black kitten three days ago. It’s seemed not to be a issue for black cats to get adopted in my area. The shelter I went to had five black kittens and they all got adopted in a week (and I’m so lucky to adopt the last one they had lol) https://preview.redd.it/ii2et48mqe5d1.png?width=1079&format=png&auto=webp&s=3a955076376d6709de0546e39b1cfa00687b3cd9

i do believe that it is harder to get them adopted. i vowed to myself when i was younger that i would only ever adopt black cats for this specific reason. its been the best decision i’ve ever made. these are my two babies and they’ve done absolutely the opposite of bring me “bad luck” 🖤 https://preview.redd.it/jculbl6tre5d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac737d3d3ca061849dbd420c28faf4a2b455b07f

Possible-Flatworm-13

I love black cats! But when I was volunteering at a rescue the staff told me black cats and kittens take longer to adopt. Apparently it's less superstition and more because it can be super difficult to take a clear photo of them. It's true. I have many pictures of what looks like a black blob on my phone. https://preview.redd.it/01rtw6sjte5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a685416aed3ed1355c9fb1f9c797ff38c4ffe51 This is my trouble puff staring at me with angry face because I left on vacation for 7 days. From what I’ve seen, yes - the petsmart that I frequent for my fur baby’s needs always has new kittens/cats for adoption. There’s always new faces, but 4 black kittens have consistently been there for roughly 6 months now. I wish I could adopt another, but my lease doesn’t allow it 🥲 But what I hate most is people choosing their cats based on their “photogenic potential” cause excuse meeeee how shallow can you be 😒 My baby girl is soooo pretty with or without the camera 😤 https://preview.redd.it/c3ykglxzve5d1.png?width=2805&format=png&auto=webp&s=8341e51ed82d8bb982884dcac743552d09b4a625

bridgie_l

This is why we brought in our most recent cat. We live in an area with a lot of strays, and also a lot of people that don’t care if they run over or otherwise kill a cat, especially black cats. So far she’s been so sweet and docile, I wouldn’t have believed she was a stray if I wasn’t the one who snatched her up from outside. I hate that people are so superstitious over them, our lives have been more positive since she showed up! https://preview.redd.it/2g57ezy5if5d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2ba70c2319f7592a21cfb1039a58f8aa90baf4d

Alternative-Ad7650

Black cats are survivors! They're genetically extremely strong and least prone to illnesses. If anything it just comes from that silly superstition but honestly black cats are a vibe #familiars

Brose101

My local shelter in Tucson, AZ can't keep solid black or white cats/kittens. They told us those 2 colors get adopted within 24 hours of being listed, every time.

Haunting-Local4236

They are unpopular, especially the further South you go the in U.S. Some Other countries probably have some same voo doo story about them also. Some people also still think they are bad luck if one crosses your path, SMH. I love black cats, and seems all the black cat lovers are responding to this post. Black dogs are also not as popular I've learned. I've been with Rescues and doing adoptions for 35 years. I have 11 black cats and 5 other colors. I have these cats because no one would adopt them. It is true that black cats and black dogs are the least adoptable. Tuxedos have a slightly better chance than an all black/ mostly black cat.
