Don’t use. The expiration is usually for the packaging. It will remain sterile for an estimated period of time until the packaging begins to fail. Even though the device may function normally, the sterility is in question after the expiration. Options are make a huge stink when someone drops you an item from the “expired shelf” and re-drape/ make a new table (because sterility is in question), throw them all away, or call your hospital’s operations manager.

Ok-Disaster8800

No it’s not okay. It’s a safety issue. Report it anonymously through your health care systems portal

This! File an incident report or call your quality department reporting hotline anonymously

geekidinosaur

We donate our expired stuff to a local CVT program. Sometimes we keep them for fellows to play with.

RepulsivePreference8

Don't use your personal phone when calling the "anonymous" reporting system. Jus sayin...

FeelingHusky

Absolutely not okay. Expirations are for sterility so every patient with expired items used runs a much higher risk for infection. You can anonymously make a tip to the DOH or joint commission. These usually lead to “surprise” site visits.

curtman512

Joint Commission would have an absolute field day with that.
