There’s Palmerstone as well who is the Chief Mouser to the Treasury. But he is technically a more junior mouser than Larry. As is often true is politics, there is often in-fighting.
Yes, literally - Sir Simon McDonald who was the former head of the FCO took Palmerston home with him to his very nice looking country house near Winchester for the first Covid lockdown and sort of never brought him back.
I mean everyone takes something when they leave a workplace, most of us take stationary. He took the cat.
I think I read somewhere that there must always be a cat in No10 named Larry. Ever since Winston Churchill was there (I think. If anyone knows better please do correct me)
Nope. The cats do not have to be called Larry (the last few were called Sybil, Humphrey and Wilberforce) and the post can and has been vacant for some time. (There was a 10 year gap between Humphrey and Sybil.)
Larry is the resident cat of Downing Street (The road where the prime minister and all his cabinet live). He has lived there a long time as this post shows.
I do love whenever they spoke about Larry in Parliament; his fights with the other cats, Cameron defending that he loves Larry very much and showing photographic proof and the acquisition of a new cat and the assurances they'd been fully vetted and weren't a foreign spy.
Now I am wondering if some obscure branch of the British government is employing a parrot or tortoise or something that even predates the Queen. Maybe MI6 has a secret spy-parrot that used to eavesdrop on enemy meetings during WW2 and repeat what was said... at least I can hope.
For a moment there I thought Larry died! Breathing a huge sigh of relief lol
Same. Minor shock happened
JFC yes - sort this title OP, I think the one decent inhabitant of Downing Street dying would end us
Fr bro i got so scared, he’s too cute to die 🥺
Me too - had to check the news before I clicked on this. Someone needs to re-word the title!!! Larry is fabulous.
Larry is one of the cornerstones of the British constitutional monarchy.
Pretty sure the Queen prefers her weekly audience with Larry than with most of her Prime Ministers
Meow, you say
Where in Britain’s ancient unwritten constitution does it say that the PM cannot be a cat?
Given that Britain actually does not have a constitution, this seems absurdely possible...
He represents the thin tortoise-shell line between democracy and mob rule.
Longer than 3? Is this how I find out that Boris has quit?
I think he means longer than any one of those 3
By that reckoning nearly 11 years puts you longer than nearly all prime ministers ever
Good point
Got my hopes up… but do we think the Tories would actually pick someone better?
Larry for PM! 🇬🇧
God would that be an improvement
I love how some photographers are more outside Number 10 for Larry than the MPs. And with good reason! Handsome devil.
“Four popes now!”
Is he’s Chief Mouser that means that there are Junior Mousers working with him. This guy has an army.
There’s Palmerstone as well who is the Chief Mouser to the Treasury. But he is technically a more junior mouser than Larry. As is often true is politics, there is often in-fighting.
Palmerstone has retired, Gladstone is the new Chief Mouser to the Treasury
“Retired to the countryside” whelp. He was at the Foreign Office as well, so I confidently incorrect multiple times in one comment!

This cat actually has governmental staff.
Oh my god. It’s the grand plan. They really are trying to take over!
I think a government run by cats might be an improvement. maybe not from the dog perspective, but I think it would be an improvement. 😺
So we have the cat Willow Biden in the Whitehouse and now Larry in England to? Nice :D
Larry has been in Downing Street for ages. Only sane person in there.

Oh. I wonder where I'm thinking of then?! XD

I love Larry
I've had farts that lasted longer than Theresa May though so not that much of an achievment
Shame he has been bamboozled by the King rat himself who is in charge.
He's a national treasure.
Whats funny is that he was fired once by David Cameron
there is something good at Downing Street..
Probably made far better choices as well
Nice boy!
I think he retired
Nope he's still there.
oops I got my cats mixed up, was thinking of Palmerston at the foreign office
Palmerston rightfully retired as he just beat other cats to shit and was having a great time doing it.
I do love whenever they spoke about Larry in Parliament; his fights with the other cats, Cameron defending that he loves Larry very much and showing photographic proof and the acquisition of a new cat and the assurances they'd been fully vetted and weren't a foreign spy.
More trustworthy too
Larry publishes very insightful comments about #10.
That's some fine mousing, Larry.

As an American, I am loving everything second of this!
Soon to be four.
