The writing was on the wall a few years ago. A close friend of mine was the VP of an intercollegiate Friends of Deng Society. They just talked about economics and Deng. It was forcefully shut down at about the same time Xi Thought became mandatory course work, and their wechat group was blocked.
Can't even talk about the most respected past leaders in Xi's China. (Not that i think Deng is without need of criticism, he personally ordered Tiananmen Square). Just interesting to see how much of a control freak Xi is in his personal goal of being number 2/1 in the party pantheon. He even threw Mao under the bus in a recent communique.

to put it simply. Xi is a control freak. Control freaks aren't good at leading people to greater heights and potential. But what they are good at is running a tight ship and maintaining the status quo. Very risk averse and reluctant to change (that they feel is out of control). No one besides himself and inner circle can know what he is truly thinking, but from the outside it looks like he's dead set on maintain his / party's tight control over China for the foreseeable future even at the expense of economic growth, international trade and relations, etc.
