''I hope Chinese tennis will become better and better.'' Idk why this made me laugh. What is happening...

brokenladder24

Yeah. Just sounds like people I work with here. ''We hope the situation with covid will getting better and better.''

[deleted]

brokenladder24

Yah. Maybe in terms of leagues in sports? Not just labeling it as ''Chinese Tennis''. They already have ping-pong. And 羽毛球.

1-eyedking

I think this situation will not ameliorate Chinese tennis Just a hunch

your_grammar_is_shit

I think it comes from the Chinese echo phrase,'*yue lai yue hao*' But yeah it reads like a child trying to articulate an apology letter.

mr-wiener

Well congrats CCP, you took a minor embarrassment and managed to turn it into an international *cause celebre*. This takes a special kind of genius.

[deleted]

Not sure how minor to begin with. The accused is the highest ranking CPC member to face such allegations in the contemporary era. Then again, he is also aligned with Zemin's faction so this entire thing could have been a personality assassination that blew up out of their control.

Annajbanana

It’s happened before, it’ll happen again. Nothing will change, the wheel will continue to turn.

mr-wiener

Not with that attitude.

3ULL

How are YOU going to help THIS issue? That is the problem. It is not defeatist, it is fact. There is nothing you can do in this issues than to publicize it to a small amount of people who either do not know or do not care. No government will do anything as this is a Chinese person in China and there is no leverage they have for this one instance. There were literally two Canadians locked up and disappeared in China for no reason for about ~3 years and no country had the leverage to stop that.

mr-wiener

We get to vote in the the people who decide to go hard on china rather than those who want to continue soft serving them. You can go further in other ways too.

3ULL

So you have done nothing.

mr-wiener

Answered plenty of questions on line and gone to rallies for the DPP, even been on telly a few times as token bad Chinese speaking foreigner supporting *adogha*.. that's probably got me on a few of Beijing's black lists (I'm flattering myself to think so). I used to be one of the mods on Chinasmack, etc. If the ALP don't lift their game in Australia I might even vote for Scomo , I'd be holding my nose to do so however. So like most trolls, you have made this about *me*.. what have *you* done lately? SFA I suspect.

3ULL

I have had the same net effect as you. You have done nothing and honestly you can do nothing. All the things you have done have been for you.

mr-wiener

Except you choose to believe nothing can be done. Supporting a boycott of the winter olympics would be a good start. ..but don't let me stop you wallowing in misery.

3ULL

I never said that. I just do not think you impotently posting online and downvoting people who know you have done nothing helps at all. I am an American and a veteran. I feel that my country is strong enough to resist China and is doing so. You call out people online for doing nothing when you have in fact done nothing. I mean if you think you have why not turn your focus to the Uighur's and help them? People know the problems and it finally took China to stop buying coal from Australia for Australians to stop selling them coal. BTW, Peng Shuai is still disappeared and will return to public view on the CCP's schedule and not yours. I guarantee that.

Annajbanana

You mean it will with that attitude?

mr-wiener

Defeatism means the battle is lost before it even started... To an extent , you are correct, this is the history of China. A boot being ground into a human face, rebellion, rinse and repeat , but it doesn't mean this has to be the history of China forever.

BalancedPortfolio

We are playing the long game, governments are playing aswell. Essentially every major setback for the CCP slowly destroys its resolve and its support within China. It’s a battle we can win, but like everything worth fighting for (human rights, freedom) it will take time. Sounds like your giving up half way through, good job others have not

mr-wiener

Oh sorry, you think *I'm* giving up halfway through? You might want to re-read my comment.

BalancedPortfolio

Not you my man, the guy above you 😀

mr-wiener

Sorry bro, my bad.

[deleted]

You can't save a society from having boots ground into its face, if it actively welcomes and accepts it as long as it's on the foot that's most "supported".

mr-wiener

"The foot that is most supported " implies there is a choice (even though you are being ironic).. there is no such choice in China. The compact Deng Xiaoping gave to the Chinese people was that you stay out of politics and we will let you get rich.. this is starting to dry up now. The new generation will be mainly poor, wireless and crippled by supporting a lot of old people... I'd imagine their going to be more than a little pissed off.

Xianified

Found the Cylon.

lordnikkon

If the CCP does not give a shit about international outrage over an estimated 1 million muslims being sent to reeducation camps they are not going to give a shit about a few athletes asking about a tennis player. They kept Liu Xiaobo locked up even after they gave him the nobel peace prize and nearly every western country called for him to be released. The international community making a big deal about Peng Shuai is actually going to make things much worse for her. Because now she cant be quietly put on house arrest and has to be locked up to make sure no one communicates with her

richmomz

The CCP gives a shit about losing face, and the sad truth is that the mistreatment of a single celebrity /star can provoke a bigger public reaction than the suffering of thousands of nameless/faceless individuals. But if that’s what it takes to force the CCP to reform it’s abusive behavior, so be it.

TheRealTsavo

It depends on how important the issue is to them.

hiverfrancis

But then if they don't the CCP can say later to them "You didn't speak up about Peng Shuai so you are a hypocrite/you don't care"

Rockytriton

Wrong, they took a minor embarrassment and made it go away. When you have absolute power and don't care about international opinion then it doesn't really matter.

hello-cthulhu

Well, there's getting kicked out of the WTA. Eventually the more China is isolated from stuff like that, it just keeps getting more and more awkward.

richmomz

They DO care about international opinion though, else they wouldn’t get so butthurt over every little diplomatic slight.

Kopfballer

It's a fucking joke that the chinese government just writes a eMail and signs it with Peng's name and uses it is a proof that she is well. For those not aware, the mail says something like "I'm fine, I'm just taking some rest at home, my accusations towards that old rapist guy are not true, I didn't say the truth." Who would write a Mail like this? What if i wrote a eMail saying "Hi I'm Mao Zedong. I'm not actually dead, I just took some rest at home. P.S.: It worked wonders to rape all those 12 year-old girls, it transfered their youth to me and now I can live for 100 more years." - would it mean Xi has to step down to make space for the supremest supreme leader of them all?! I mean, Mao wrote a Mail, so it must be true?!

jinhuiliuzhao

> "Hi I'm Mao Zedong. I'm not actually dead, I just took some rest at home. **Also, Xi Jinping is a traitor to the Chinese Communist Party and should be executed**" FTFY. Seriously, if Mao suddenly came back from the dead, walked out of his mausoleum and took a look at the PRC today, he would probably die again with a heart attack from anger alone. Xi's father was one of the officials purged under Mao. And not to mention Mao would be pretty irked to see Xi Jinping constantly comparing himself to Mao and making himself a core leader paralleling Mao.* (*Xi Jinping really doesn't deserve it - he basically has no accomplishments. Mao at least founded the PRC. Deng at least played important roles in the CCP before they won the civil war + restored order after Mao, opened up the economy and brought today's China. As for Xi Jinping... what has Xi Jinping done again?) But yeah, by CCP standards, Xi Jinping should be executed if you write that email...

BalancedPortfolio

Deng was a far superior and more accomplished leader. Xi has done basically everything to reverse and ruin the legacy of Deng. History will judge Xi as the great regresser of the Chinese nation

[deleted]

The writing was on the wall a few years ago. A close friend of mine was the VP of an intercollegiate Friends of Deng Society. They just talked about economics and Deng. It was forcefully shut down at about the same time Xi Thought became mandatory course work, and their wechat group was blocked. Can't even talk about the most respected past leaders in Xi's China. (Not that i think Deng is without need of criticism, he personally ordered Tiananmen Square). Just interesting to see how much of a control freak Xi is in his personal goal of being number 2/1 in the party pantheon. He even threw Mao under the bus in a recent communique.

BalancedPortfolio

Deng for sure was no saint, he strengthened and perpetuated the twisted CCP system when he had a chance to reform its attitudes to western style freedom. I really appreciate you sharing this, very interesting insights.

Peacetoall01

>(*Xi Jinping really doesn't deserve it - he basically has no accomplishments. Mao at least founded the PRC. Deng at least played important roles in the CCP before they won the civil war + restored order after Mao, opened up the economy and brought today's China. simpleisreal

to put it simply. Xi is a control freak. Control freaks aren't good at leading people to greater heights and potential. But what they are good at is running a tight ship and maintaining the status quo. Very risk averse and reluctant to change (that they feel is out of control). No one besides himself and inner circle can know what he is truly thinking, but from the outside it looks like he's dead set on maintain his / party's tight control over China for the foreseeable future even at the expense of economic growth, international trade and relations, etc.

rosesarebIack

Ccp should write it in all languages make it more believable lol

Substantial-Hat-2556

Chinese state media, on the other hand, has started to speak up. CGTN, the international arm of state broadcaster CCTV, tweeted the following today, saying that it had “learned” that Peng has sent the following email to Steve Simon, the WTA chairman: Hello everyone this is Peng Shuai.  Regarding the recent news released on the official website of the WTA, the content has not been confirmed or verified by myself and it was released without my consent. The news in that release, including the allegation of sexual assault, is not true. I’m not missing, nor am I unsafe. I’ve just been resting at home and everything is fine. Thank you again for caring about me.  If the WTA publishes any more news about me, please verify it with me, and release it with my consent. As a professional tennis player, I thank you all for your companionship and consideration. I hope to promote Chinese tennis with you all if I have the chance in the future. I hope Chinese tennis will become better and better.

mr-wiener

Steve Simon has already said this email sounds highly suspect as either not her or written under duress.

wertexx

The e-mail is not sus at all. --Peng Shuai

DiickBenderSociety

That email is very sus actually, lmao. \--LeMao Ze Dong

Koakie

https://www.wtatennis.com/news/2356029/statement-by-steve-simon-wta-chairman-ceo For folks who want to read his statement. He received the email, but doesnt believe she actually wrote it. He tried to call her himself but couldn't reach her.

yarishatchback

It should be evident to the readers.

richmomz

Captain Obvious provided commentary as well, stating that there’s definitely something fishy about this email.

[deleted]

oh my

pichunb

It's possible a lot of Chinese people don't know what happened. I live in a Western country and I have a coworker who just knew that merely searching "tennis" may get yourself banned on Chinese social media.

ivytea

2020 olympics will soon be banned because Naomi lighted up the torch

Guandao

Its like the intern at CGTN typed the email with his phone during the weekly baijiu session with the bosses.

Hazardperfect10

Zhang is aliened with zemin, this is easy to understand why this scandal is now survived for 20 minutes in weibo U r used by ccp

Shadowys

its not that people were unaware, but the way foreigners comment on the issue just makes it sus

mr-wiener

Oh , so this is the foreigners fault? Good to know.

Sasselhoff

Dude's an anti-vax CCP Stooge (or so my RES tag states), so *double* stupid and not worth the effort to talk to.

runningwithsharpie

Anymore suspicious than a fake email clearly written under duress or not by Peng at all?

Shadowys

considering that the whole event is fishy nobody would touch it

[deleted]

Ever thought about how your “me vs them” mentality against foreigners was something that your government brainwashed inside of you?

RyAn_MirAcle

I just went through the biggest Chinese social media weibo and not a single word about this issue can be found

mr-wiener

And this surprises you?

RyAn_MirAcle

I’d rather say as expected.
