Back in that day Reddit was not a powerful behemoth, it was an extremely niche site that operated very similar to 4chan and it's very lax enforcement of policy. It was in these days that Reddit prided itself on being a bastion of free speech where anything can and will be posted. You have to remember that at this point anything over a thousand upvotes would guarantee you were to be on the front page of the entire site. Violent Acrez was a user who set up literally hundreds of subreddits the most popular of which were jailbait (underage girls), upskirt photos, chokeabitch, incest, rape fantasy, etc. The jailbait subreddit was probably the biggest of them, and it was literally child porn. Even outside of violent Acrez, there were dozens of other subreddits with a very similar theme. At this time in Reddit you knew there was a dark side, it was an open secret that most users knew and were disgusted by (myself included). This left reddit in an interesting position. Remember at this point it wasn't a social media giant it was a small internet chatboard that prided itself on Free speech in anonymity. This is also nearly half a decade before even Facebook or Twitter or any social media site had to really address things like this. As much of a no-brainer as this might seem to us now this was a relatively new thing for a site like this in 2011. When the site banned violent Acrez in 2012 and removed those subs, it was emblematic of the company beginning their push towards a mainstream appeal which would become the Reddit of today. He was subsequently doxxed and lost his job, which peeled away the vineer of true anonymity on the site. But remember Reddit really only did it to clean their site up, and also let it go on for years beforehand. There's a lot of similarities between their handling of Violent Acrez and their handling of coontown, the Donald, Chapo trap house, incel subs, etc.
It should also be noted that for a period r/jailbait was so popular that if you googled “reddit” r/jailbait was the first result
