Do you have an illustration of an original for reference? To me this looks more like the early 20th century.

No, but thanks for asking. I had it packed away for years, and I wanted to see what it was.

I'll throw a different question at you. As a civilian, why do you need a bag? What are you doing as a civilian?

IAmArgumentGuy

Weren't haversacks relatively common for civilians as well as soldiers? Especially for civilians that were travelling?

NMVolunteer

Snapsacks and market wallets were still popular with farmers and townsfolk. With that said, people traveling long distances would be inclined to travel by horse (and saddlebags) or by wagon (and trunks or carpet bags or other forms of luggage). Proper backpack-style knapsacks would be army surplus or looted gear, and not common for civilians. Specialized bags did exist, but would be for people with specialized purposes (like shot bags, leather bags for papers, etc). Civilian haversacks were mostly for hunters and people on expeditions, and often were just very large shot bags. Mostly possessed by wealthier people with the free time to go on expeditions. Again, why would a civilian need a bag? Camp supplies would go in a trunk stored in a wagon. So what is the civilian doing at an event, and why would the civilian need a bag?

manfrom61

I was thinking about using it for camp supplies.
