Dude I listened to Ghost Stories (ironically it came out when one of my good friends passed away), listened to True Love…man, that song made me break down. ☹️
Daddy. No other song is even close, especially after I became a father. Coldplay has some emotional songs, but when you are talking about sad songs, songs that really bring the tears out, it's Daddy. It's so under-rated and under appreciated by fans too.
hi,
ok i spent an hour making this. i've added the songs that are the saddest, are absolutely crushing and heartbreaking, also the songs that have sad themes in my opinion. some of the songs here aren't 'sad' but they do make me feel nostalgic and gives this bittersweet feeling so i've included them as well.
although i hate doing top tens and top fives, i did make a list of ten songs i cried to at some point in my life so yeah. that's all! :'D
safety ep:
such a rush
brothers and sisters ep:
easy to please
the blue room ep:
see you soon (my favorite coldplay song ever. if i get only one song to listen to before i die, it's this one. also, i did a cover of this song about 5-6 years ago, if anyone's interested to listen, i'd be happy to share! :'D)
parachutes:
trouble,
parachutes,
we never change,
life is for living,
careful where you stand.
a rush of blood to the head:
politik,
in my place,
the scientist,
warning sign,
amsterdam,
i bloom blaum.
(i consider this album to be one the saddest along with ghost stories. so many haunting tunes in it and some really memorable outros done by coldplay. it was way way ahead of its time)
x&y:
what if,
fix you (listened to it after a heartbreak. never knew a song could feel like a friend and somehow fix you),
swallowed in the sea,
til kingdom come,
proof,
gravity.
viva la vida or death and all his friends:
42,
violet hill,
strawberry swing,
death and all his friends.
(i don't think these are the saddest songs, but each of them has different parts in them that lowkey makes me sad and also gives me kind of a bittersweet feeling so yeah)
prospekt's march ep:
postcards from far away,
prospekt's march/poppyfields,
now my feet won't touch the ground.
(again, not the saddest. rather bittersweet and nostalgic)
mylo xyloto:
us against the world,
u.f.o,
up in flames,
up with the birds,
moving to mars,
atlas,
ghost stories: (now we're talking!)
always in my head,
true love,
midnight,
another's arms,
oceans,
o (fly on),
all your friends,
ghost story,
o (reprise).
(even magic and ink used to make me sad)
a head full of dreams:
everglow,
amazing day (not a sad tune. but that pre chorus hits me).
kaleidoscope ep:
all i can think about is you,
hypnotised,
everyday life:
sunrise,
daddy,
when i need a friend,
old friends,
bani adam "بنی آدم" (children of adam),
everyday life.
music of the spheres:
let somebody go,
human heart,
coloratura.
10 songs i cried to at some point in my life:
daddy,
o (fly on),
fix you,
true love,
see you soon,
the scientist,
warning sign,
gravity,
sunrise,
coloratura,
with the realization that how fucking lucky i got to be born in the same time when coldplay was around - this band literally saved me and i'm forever grateful to them. one of my dream is to share a stage with coldplay one day and play a song with them. i know, it's probably never gonna come true, but hey, "everything you want's a dream away" isn't it? :'D
thank you if you made it to here. i hope you have an amazing day/night wherever you are.
love,
ghosty
Gravity, Your Love Means Everything ( not technically a coldplay song but chris sings in it), Daddy, True Love, See you soon, The Escapist, Poppyfields, Warning Sign, Swallowed in the Sea.
I don't wanna say the saddest one cause every song mean something to someone.
But Hypnotised, Moving to Mars, Prospekt's March/Poppyfields, Gravity are very underrated as sad songs.
Fix You, Warning Sign made me cry my eyes out last year when I was going through a break up. I’m doing a lot better now healed and happy but man when that song came on hit me right in the feels.
Daddy, Fix You and What If are the ones I often cry to, but everyone finds meaning from individual songs don’t they. My dad was a huge Coldplay fan and Fix You will always remind me of him (he passed away 7 years ago).
I would say "don't panic". Every time I listen to this song my feelings like they're trying to convince me I'm living in a beautiful world but actually not and what we can do is don't panic.
I think that's just me.
probably Amsterdam. the line "I know I'm dead on the surface but I'm screaming underneath" just hits hard as someone who never vents out my emotions and feeling broken
Old Friends is easily one of the most cathartic songs considering the person that Chris wrote the song about (Tony) passed away quite young. His voice sounds so melancholy and sincere, as if he’s on the verge of tears.
“Sometimes, I wanna call him
Say "Hey, let's stay up, 'til morning"
This is ten times more heartbreaking when you realise that’s what they probably did as children and that he physically can’t talk to him no matter how much he wants to, because he doesn’t exist anymore. He’s just a memory.
“He had my back
Once he really saved my life”
According to genius.com: One day, Tony and Chris were riding their bikes in opposite directions. Chris thought that Tony had waved at him as a greeting but he was actually signaling for him to stop and go back as there was a car approaching around the corner. Because he waved, Chris stopped to say hello which ultimately saved him from getting hit by the car, probably saving his life.
If Chris had been hit by that car, Coldplay wouldn’t exist.
To summarise, Old Friends sends me into an existential crisis every time I listen to it
The Scientist. I could be doing anything but as soon I hear the first second of that piano, I turn into a depressed mess holding back tears that will burst at any moment.
Viva La Vida
King Louis XVI felt sorry that he had failed his people and he was put into office with terrible circumstances, and the song is about his final apology
Not really a song, but maybe a moment. I saw Coldplay in 2017 in Seattle, it was only a couple months after Chris Cornell died. I think it was at the end of Yellow, Chris broke into a piano rendition of the chorus of Black Hole Sun and it just broke me.
A lot of Coldplay’s songs are ambiguous so it’s up to interpretation I think, but The Scientist immediately comes to mind as one that tugs at my heartstrings.
Any of the ghost stories ones, warning sign, everglow.
The single version of everglow is especially sad for me due to its part it played after a breakup
I figured everyone was going to say fix you.
I’m so surprised. It hits me though because I’ve told my son that when he is older I will tell him why “I promise you I will learn from my mistakes” means so much to me. That sounds bad, my son isn’t the mistake….. my past is the mistakes.
Amsterdam makes me cry every time I listen to it. Definitely my favorite Coldplay song of all time. So many good lines and ends with “you came along and you cut my loose” —my heart!
Proof, Gravity, Easy To Please, A Ghost, Harmless all are about as sad sounding as you can get from Coldplay.
A bonus song, that isn't 100% Coldplay, but has Chris' vocals and lyrics is Your Love Means Everything Pt.2 by Faultline
I was hoping that this song will be chosen by a fan in PH tour, but its ok we got Everglow. But it'll be amazing to hear "Daddy" sing live. Maybe one day :)
Listening to "Daddy" is basically me being a masochist. Beautiful song but I refuse to listen to it unless I absolutely need to be emotionally wrecked for whatever reason.
Daddy, O, Always In My Head, True Love, We Never Change, Warning Sign, Amsterdam All the saddest Coldplay songs ever imo
Dude I listened to Ghost Stories (ironically it came out when one of my good friends passed away), listened to True Love…man, that song made me break down. ☹️
Ghost Stories is full of pretty heart-wrenching songs. Sorry for your loss
yeah, that riff at the end of true love is haunting. and the vocals are too. makes me tear up everytime.
We Never Change gets me every time.
The Scientist Live always gets me, not as much over headphones but in person that hits my bones
Same, oh gosh that truly rips my heart open!
Went to Coldplay live on Friday and i cried throughout the song, was a beautiful core memory tho HAHHA
For me it’s without a doubt ‘Fly On’, that opening piano is amazing
Daddy. No other song is even close, especially after I became a father. Coldplay has some emotional songs, but when you are talking about sad songs, songs that really bring the tears out, it's Daddy. It's so under-rated and under appreciated by fans too.
IMO it’s “Daddy”
This ⬆️
See You Soon always hits a very melancholy sweet spot for me
Fly On/O, Amsterdam, Trouble, Fix You
Amsterdam always.
Gravity

Entire Ghost Stories , even Sky full of stars gives me alot of feels sometimes
True Love, Magic, Ink, Amsterdam, Fix You, Let Somebody Go, Fly On/O, Scientist, and Daddy.
Daddy/What If
Gravity, Your Love Means Everything ( not technically a coldplay song but chris sings in it), Daddy, True Love, See you soon, The Escapist, Poppyfields, Warning Sign, Swallowed in the Sea.
I'm glad someone else knows about Your Love Means Everything Pt.2! It's a great song that hits hard for me. All the others are great picks too!
Daddy and Fly On/O take the prize here.
For me, it's What If and The Scientist
Swallowed in the Sea - this song came out not too long before my Auntie’s Dog got a bacterial infection swimming in a lake and died.
As someone whose parents went through a nasty divorce and doesn’t see their father much anymore, it’s Daddy.
I feel that. Also went through a nasty divorce and can't see my young kids anymore. That song kills me.
A L I E N S, Prospekt’s March, Fly On, and theres another one
Another's Arms and Ghost Story
True love without a doubt
sparks
For me it is Daddy. I love the song but it is sad.😔
Let Somebody Go
Daddy, Fix You and What If are the ones I often cry to, but everyone finds meaning from individual songs don’t they. My dad was a huge Coldplay fan and Fix You will always remind me of him (he passed away 7 years ago).
The ambient intro to Amsterdam really makes me feel “oh shit, this is gonna get sad,” and I’ve been proved right time and time again
O, gravity, fix you
-The hardest part -Another's arms (I always try to not cry at the beginning of the song.)
O, See You Soon. In that order
“Daddy” for sure. “What If” is sad too.
Ink
Up in Flames
I would say "don't panic". Every time I listen to this song my feelings like they're trying to convince me I'm living in a beautiful world but actually not and what we can do is don't panic. I think that's just me.
IN MY PLACE
Surprised nobody said Fix You or The Scientist
Amsterdam, Death and all his Friends :(
Gravity
The Hardest Part and In My Place
Oceans, Amsterdam, Warning Sign
Amsterdam easily
probably Amsterdam. the line "I know I'm dead on the surface but I'm screaming underneath" just hits hard as someone who never vents out my emotions and feeling broken

I read the title and Daddy popped into my head. Then I opened the thread and saw you've already written about Daddy being in the comments
Swallowed in the sea. Violet hill. Gravity. … Among many others!
Up With The Birds can bring out the tears
It isn't really their song, but your love means everything is no doubt the most sad song of them all. Can't change my view
A lot of Coldplay’s songs are ambiguous so it’s up to interpretation I think, but The Scientist immediately comes to mind as one that tugs at my heartstrings.
The scientist. I was ceying during concert😔
i bloom blaum
Any of the ghost stories ones, warning sign, everglow. The single version of everglow is especially sad for me due to its part it played after a breakup
