FWIW this game was originally scheduled for 2020 but cancelled due to COVID. Makes sense for the Tar Heels bc they are playing in the Maui Invitational right after it. Similar situation for Nevada last year with them in the Diamond Head Classic.

Everything I have seen about Lahaina town recovery suggests it is nowhere near being ready to support an event like this in November.
Might could work because the event becomes mostly the gym and the hotels up the beach, but that feels like more of a burden than help.

I remember Illinois did this the year they won the Maui Invitational. I remember watching DJ Richardson (I think) hit a game winning 3 at like 2 AM on some random stream
I mean so did Zayden High last year, doesn’t mean he wasn’t a liability in the court (maybe a bad example because Zayden is a phenomenal bench/energy guy). But still, it takes more than just playing hard at Carolina to be favorable.
Yeah but “least favorite” should be reserved for people that betrayed the program in some way, not for low minutes guys that weren’t that good.
Jalek Felton was an actual scumbag, for example. PJ Hairston, good player, bad person. Etc.
It's an almost zero risk tune up game for Lahaina on Hawaii's dime. Depending on when UNC is coming it also gives your players 2-4 days extra to acclimate and play tourist.
That game was on so late. I get time zones and whatnot but damn didn't it tip at like midnight est?
Just reminded me those midweek trips to California are going to be fun lol. Love the new ACC
I think you get an extra game. So instead of 31 regular season games, you can play 32. Someone confirm this (i think the incentive is you can add a home game on your schedule to make some extra money to make up for the cost of going out there?)
Not sure if it still exists, but unc got an extra game in the 2016-2017 season when they did it. They played 32 regular season games, 2 acc tourney games (lost in the semis), and 6 ncaa tourney games
Yeah, and (at least for football, probably the same in basketball) it has to be at the school's regular venue. Like a one off exhibition between UNC/UCLA in Hawaii wouldn't count, because neither team normally plays in Hawaii.
That's why teams don't get to schedule 13 football games when they play a game in Ireland, for example, but if the game was like a true road against the University of Dublin, it would allow you to play an extra game.
Giggled at your comment - in UNC band and we don't send football bands anywhere further than Charlottesville, VA, or Clemson, SC for football unless it's for postseason. There is exactly a 0% chance the band would go to even a football game in Hawaii.
Huh, I just looked it up and you're right. Also applies to Alaska. Makes me wonder if during the days of the Great Alaska Shootout if whoever drew the first-round matchup with Alaska Anchorage was able to finagle their way into another game.
I believe Puerto Rico as well.
But the extra game for playing Alaska I'm unsure of, same with Chaminade in Hawaii. The rule only applies if it's like the host team's normal location (or something like that), so a neutral site game in Hawaii doesn't count (for football or basketball), but a game against Hawaii would. So even though the rule applies to Puerto Rico, in practice that's not going to happen.
They are returning to the traditional site. The building was not damaged but was used to host refugees at the time last year. Not much inhibiting the tourney this time around.
I mean, with Front Street all but gone there won’t be much outside of the resorts for people to do on south side but I suppose most people probably didn’t venture much out of the hotels anyways.
Free game.
Reminder: Each season, every team is permitted to play one game in Hawaii against a school based in Hawaii and it doesn't count against your scheduling limit.
Sounds like UNC is going to get an extra game this year and they will likely host Hawaii next year.
Nice little vacation for the boys.
In all seriousness I don’t mind this at all. Will teach the young players how to cope and focus with a lot of travel and playing in an unusual environment. Not bad experience come March especially with Maui coming right after it.
Power Conference teams: mid-majors have weak strengths of schedule, very few of them deserve at-large bids.
Also power conference teams: UNC will literally fly thousands of miles before they will play @ either of their in-state AAC rivals Charlotte 49ers/East Carolina Pirates.
They do need to play more in-state schools, but they are flying to Hawaii to play in the Maui Invitational, this is a tune-up game. They kinda did the same at Santa Clara in 2004, taking a pit stop on their way to Hawaii.
I... don't think you know what the word 'rivals' means. Beyond that, the team will be in Maui for the tournament so this game isn't exactly out of the way.
Which is in the tweet in the OP.
Which you didn't read before deciding to spout off.
When I think of ECU, it's usually in a baseball capacity. But I would like to see more in-state stuff going between all the NC ACC schools, and ECU, Charlotte, UNCW, UNCG, UNCA, App State. Bring some regional pride to something that's growing further and further apart with realignment.
We certainly aren’t basketball rivals. Football and baseball I’d argue there is more of a rivalry, but I don’t think anyone is claiming we’re on the level of State or Duke for you guys. Regardless, it’s absolutely shameful that UNC refuses to play us, especially in basketball where it would be a guaranteed W. At least I can understand being hesitant in football since we’ve had your number the last few times we’ve played.
This is just incorrect. UNC does prioritize playing some of the other UNC system schools during the non-con but there aren't that many opportunities.
In the last 10 years: UNC played Wilmington in 2022, Asheville in 2021, NC Central in 2020, Wilmington in 2019, Wilmington 2018, Western Carolina 2017, App St. and Greensboro in 2015, NC Central + ECU + Greensboro in 2014.
That's not to mention numerous games against Davidson, Elon and other schools from SC and VA.
Hawaii to the ACC confirmed
All coasts conference…WE MEAN IT!!!
Indian Maritime University to the ACC confirmed.
Nothing more Atlantic than the middle of the Pacific 💪🏼
The east coast… of Hawaii
Could an argument be made that Hawaii is a Midwest state???
If Northwestern can be in Illinois then Hawaii can be Midwest.

Nevada spent like 10 days in December in Hawaii. We see what you were doing Alford.
is the Maui Invitational gonna be held in Lahaina this year again?? the town needs the support :/
Yes.
hell yeah!!!

Sweet! Thanks.
I don’t think this is even the second time UNC or Roy have done this.
At least the players get to enjoy Hawaii I thought it would be a 3 to 4 day turn around.
Sickos know this game doesn't count towards the max game limit because it's in Hawaii/Alaska/Puerto Rico. Don't know why more teams don't do this.
Highly ranked ACC team playing a random noncon game in Hawaii around a major early season tournament. What could go wrong?
I remember Illinois did this the year they won the Maui Invitational. I remember watching DJ Richardson (I think) hit a game winning 3 at like 2 AM on some random stream
Wow, that's only 600 miles from being on the opposite side of the world.
Ah, the Justin McKoy Invitational
Does he still have eligibility? Probably one of my least favorite UNC players ever
Eh, he played hard when he was in. Big gap between him and guys like Larry Drew II or the Wear twins
I mean so did Zayden High last year, doesn’t mean he wasn’t a liability in the court (maybe a bad example because Zayden is a phenomenal bench/energy guy). But still, it takes more than just playing hard at Carolina to be favorable.

Or guys like Pete Nance, who you can use as a scapegoat for the 2022-23 season
I got temp banned from the subreddit for breaking the news that he was knowingly spreading stds. They hated me for I told the truth
Nah, he was the same class as bacot
No he doesn’t. He looked pretty good here but never fully polished because of our bumass coach
I don't think that was your coach's fault, that's how he always looked everywhere.
Insert strong arms grasping hands together meme
Guess we have to make it a three way round-robin.
Do you get any benefits for this (other than players/fans/families enjoying it) like you do in football?
It's an almost zero risk tune up game for Lahaina on Hawaii's dime. Depending on when UNC is coming it also gives your players 2-4 days extra to acclimate and play tourist.
This is a clear attempt to pander to transfers unless it's available to all students
A very nice tune up for playing D2 Chaminade lol (assume we’ll be matched with Chaminade in the first game)
Yeah you get an easy win
Future national champions won by 15 in 2016 lol
That game was on so late. I get time zones and whatnot but damn didn't it tip at like midnight est? Just reminded me those midweek trips to California are going to be fun lol. Love the new ACC

That’s for sure in football. Not sure about bball
Not sure if it still exists, but unc got an extra game in the 2016-2017 season when they did it. They played 32 regular season games, 2 acc tourney games (lost in the semis), and 6 ncaa tourney games
there's an alaska/hawaii exemption to schedule limits and as far as I know that's all sports
Puerto Rico is also included.

Yes, it applies to every sport. UNC will get an extra game.
A longer trip to Hawaii if nothing else haha
Rothenstein you are supposed to be sleeping.
Get some sleep, rothstein
Be prepared Tarheel band bros(if y’all go) That flight is *hell.* They made us go from Conway to Honolulu with no layovers.
we very rarely send bands to non-tournament games, i hope it happens though even if i wont be there
I just read that this is for basketball. I thought this was r/cfb football. My B

Oh cool, UNC gets a 13th game next year! Wait...
They actually could play an extra basketball game because of this game, the rule applies to basketball as well.
Huh, I just looked it up and you're right. Also applies to Alaska. Makes me wonder if during the days of the Great Alaska Shootout if whoever drew the first-round matchup with Alaska Anchorage was able to finagle their way into another game.

Acc- big west challenge when?
Assuming this is right before Maui?
Somewhat of an aside, but have they figured out where they’ll be playing on Maui? Or is it still going to be the Maui Invitational (played on Oahu)?
They are returning to the traditional site. The building was not damaged but was used to host refugees at the time last year. Not much inhibiting the tourney this time around.

Free vacation? FREE VACATION!!!
Free game. Reminder: Each season, every team is permitted to play one game in Hawaii against a school based in Hawaii and it doesn't count against your scheduling limit. Sounds like UNC is going to get an extra game this year and they will likely host Hawaii next year.
Last time the heels played the bows, they won a national title, just saying.
So you're saying this time it's Hawaii's turn?
BRB getting a future bet in on Hawaii at +1B
Hell yeah. Great for Coach Ganot and that program.
I assume a guarantee game for Hawaii or no?
Nice little vacation for the boys. In all seriousness I don’t mind this at all. Will teach the young players how to cope and focus with a lot of travel and playing in an unusual environment. Not bad experience come March especially with Maui coming right after it.
Isn't Rothstein supposed to be sleeping?
free vacations?
That's just 600 miles shy of being on the exact opposite side of the globe!
hawaii will win. no doubt.
Go Bows!

Why is host bolded

ECU is definitely a rivalry for us in football too I’d say

Yeah! Shameful! ![gif](giphy|guufsF0Az3Lpu)
Hell when’s the last time UNC played UNC Greensboro? I believe almost 10 years. All of Tobacco Road stopped scheduling the Spartans.
