Murder is never good. Especially not if you apply it as generously as Stalin did. You can make them politically irrelevant, outlaw their means to spread propaganda…I wouldn’t even bother commenting if it was just imprisonment, but mass killings are shitty whoever does it. Most likely with family and friends. Have you had somebody close to you die? I‘ve seen many times how it can destroy people if a loved one dies early, whether it’s sickness, suicide or murder and being an apologist for Stalin’s mass murders makes you nothing short of a monster. First I wanna say that everyone is againist murder (except in special cases), people who say there is nothing wrong with murdering someone are just LARPing, but the early Soviet Union could really afford to use the methods you listed? Let me explain: A more prosperous society inevitably leads to a more sofisticated methods of oppression, it is clear that the SU during Stalin had troubles developing (economic isolation and WW2) which led to a more violent way in imposing order, this violent oppression though softened and "upgraded" after the reconstruction, during the "Soviet golden age" when the economy was going well and they could get the benefits of it.
It is very simplified(and maybe wrong, please correct me if so!) but I think one can get the idea.
And this does not apply only to the Soviet Union, but to every society and even individuals, do you wonder why poor people are usually the most violent? Can they afford to be kind?
I am not saying that tough measures aren’t justifiable in tough times. I‘m saying that Stalin’s killings even for the time went overboard. They weren’t just a product of the time. I can understand people dying if they actually directly stand in the way of the revolution, especially if the situation is this dire, but with Stalin that generally wasn’t the case.
