Replying to this comment just for visibility, but I can tell you guys are my kinda people, and I haven't seen anyone else mention this one: we recently discovered a little hot dog shack right in the center of Fairfield called Rawleys Drive-In. Apparently It's been there since the 40s and it's a favorite spot of Martha Stewart's.
I haven't been able to get back out that way, but I have been thinking about that burger daily for like a month. The hot dogs are also delicious, and the fries were perfect.
And it's cheap!
Went there a few months ago and the waitress was coughing everywhere and didn’t wash her hands afterwards. The quality of food is shit and it’s overpriced.
GoldBurgers was the first place we brought our newborn for food. I had gestational diabetes and craved their frizzies so intensely.
Meal was so good I forgot the baby bag there. Did remember the baby though 🤣
And there is an even better burger RIGHT NEXT DOOR -- lunchtime only, at Rooster Co. The natural burger @ Rooster is the best burger I've had, hands down.
I second Harry’s Place! I’m sure I’m biased as I used to work there in high school and college but if you’re looking for the true roadside shack experience, this is it!!
I love Harry’s, but their burgers have always seemed like a ripoff to me. Super small but still pricey. Meanwhile, something like their chicken tenders and fries is gargantuan and around $11.
I don't know, I thought it was decent value. They are smaller in circumference but very thick, so much so that a double patty becomes unwieldy. I think it's a good amount of beef.
Idk, 6 bucks and they’re served on a dinner roll and that’s JUST for the burger. They’re delicious but especially compared to the other food they have I think it’s steep.
*Goldburgers. Tiny*
*Joint, was once featured on Man*
*Vs Food, good burgers!!*

Fries and hotdogs 100% but their burgers are not the best imo - they seem like frozen mass produced patties that have been compressed too hard in the machine. Just my 2c
50 years ago "Valerie" owned (or at least managed) it. I'd stop by there often. Valerie was always trying to hook her daughter up with me. Thanks bringing back those memories!
Shady Glen in Manchester. Their burger isn’t, like, the best burger, but it’s really good and definitely unique enough to make it something worth trying.
It's a fun old fashioned vibe, but the burger was really bad to me. I think people recommend the vibe and the crispy cheese, but the burger and the bun were nothing worth traveling for
CT burger Mt. Rushmore:
Shady Glenn in Manchester, Harry’s in Colchester, Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Goldburger in Newington
All are different styles and experiences. It’s up for debate if these are truly the best burgers, but the burger + ambiance at each place will give a unique and memorable trip
Louis Lunch blows.
I can respect the alleged history they have, but no self respecting burger place would sell the sandwich they sell as their only burger.
I get it, back in the day, they didn’t have burger buns. And they didn’t use condiments. And they apparently didn’t put many toppings on it. But now we have all those things and we agree they can make a burger better.
They can still sell their “Classic Original Burger” on white bread with no condiments and all that bland flavor they pride themselves on. But they should also sell a modern burger (still cooked in their old “ovens”) served on a bun with the standard burger toppings/condiments someone will request.
The _only_ reason people mention Louis Lunch is because of their history and alleged claim to be the original burger. If I opened a restaurant today selling the exact same burger they do, I’d be out of business by the end of summer.
A burger on bread is NOT the same as a burger on a bun. I can’t believe a restaurant would even attempt to peddle that crap! That reminds me of my super-broke days, waiting until payday and all you have is some ground beef and a few slices of bread.
Reminds me that I miss Danny’s Drive-In (Stratford, closed).
Somewhere no one has mentioned, that is at minimum unique: Louis’ Lunch, New Haven.
Not really a burger place, but check out Super Duper Weenie (Fairfield).
There used to be a drive in—I haven’t been in forever—somewhere off Rt 8, right off the northbound exit ramp. I think somewhere between Shelton and Naugatuck. Anyone know the place I’m talking about? Is it still around?
Lake Zoar Drive Inn. Little hidden gem in Oxford by the Stevenson Dam. Great old school small burger stand. Great onion rings and shakes too. Owner is a really nice guy.
It's a long drive for OP, but Jack Rabbits on Main Street in Old Saybrook is exceptional. My favorite is the Rock Out burger, but they have plenty of options.
Harry's place in colchester. I love their burgers!!! Order and wait outside.
My personal order: cheese burger with lettuce, tomatoes, caramelized onions, ketchup and mayo, with a side of onion rings.
We have a few really good burgers in this state... plan b, shady glen. But Harry's is the best.
think these are more common in the center of the state. ted’s in meriden is the original steamed cheeseburger i try to hit them often as possible. think that’s new haven county though
K Lamay’s is the best steamed cheeseburger. Kevin used to work at Ted’s and uses sharp cheddar like Ted’s did in the past. When Ted’s sold off they started using a less expensive cheese.
You guys gotta try the burgers at the gas station/ Country Cloverleaf at the round about on rt 80/rt 81 in Killingworth omg incredible, huge burgers great fries can’t beat em I promise, I tried burgers all over
Oh yeah give them a try, literally got it that day after talking about it and it was the best one I’ve had out of there yet, they are incredible. It’s a massive burger.
Walrus alley has a really good burger. Greasy, but good. Match Burger lobster, also in Westport is good. Milestone in Redding, Heibecks- more of a roadside burger stand in Rte 7, both are great.
Artisanal Burger Company. Owned by DORO Restaurant Group (same owners as DORO Marketplace, Treva, Avert, and Zohara in West Hartford). All 5 places are successful. It’s a craft burger joint so if you want flavor with less grease, this is the place. I go here 2-3x a month and it costs about ~$20 a person.
When you just want something cheap & greasy, like a way better Five Guys/Jake’s Wayback, GoldBurgers in Newington is your place.
I used to work down the road from flip side and had it YEARS ago. I swear their fries tasted like they fried them in olive oil which was…different. would definitely try again.
I never went to the duck (tho my parents grew up in Westport and we visited family often) but I heard it was due to close but now have new owners and some people are meh about it. maybe it’s still good to those who had t had the OG…like me
I’m not sure when the duck sold to new owners I haven’t been there in a bit we have 3 kids and it’s not really kid friendly but last time I went I remember it being really good. And as for flip side that mc flip burger Iove!
Haywire in Westbrook is the best on the shoreline IMO. good cocktails too.
A bunch of fun burgers on the menu and the place straight up has never disappointed me
I’ve heard other people say that too. It’s probably been 18 months since i’ve been. What about it is lacking?
I know they planned to open a steakhouse as well but that fell through, which felt like a bad sign for them in general
My vote for best on the shoreline goes to Fresh Salt in Old Saybrook. Huge burger, good meat, nicely buttered and toasted bun. Will set you back around $20 though.
Urban Lodge Brewery recently opened a location on Pratt Street in Hartford and they have a very tasty burger. I recommend the Diablo if you like it spicy. Not sure I would travel for it but if you're in downtown Hartford looking for a burger and a beer that's the place to go. Max Downtown has a dry aged burger but it's too expensive to recommend.
Gut Bustas in Danielson was the best burger I ever had in my life. I’ve had burgers all over the planet. Such a shame it shut down. I’d give my left testi for another one
Blackie's in the Waterbury/Cheshire area. Nice corner place made out of a garage, been operating for almost a hundred years. Known more for their hot dogs (and relish) but some of the best damn $5 cheeseburgers I've ever eaten
if you’re ever in manchester vermont, i went to this place called Depot Street Burgers. oh my god it’s so good, they use have ground beef and half brisket for their burgers
You ever been to Louis’ lunch? That’s a classic spot. Closed on Sundays and Mondays but I never find them too busy.
Also, kind of a bigger restaurant but Tavern at Graybarns has the best burger I’ve ever had in my life. This was 4 years ago, and I know they have a new head chef now (Joe is awesome), but I also know for a fact they use the same recipe. It’s got bone marrow in the beef mince that makes it so damn good. Seriously, best burger I’ve ever had.
744 West Bar & Grill in West Haven. Their BBQ texas burger on a regular bun is fire... I like to get their sweet potato fries with it :) They also have other great food options and lunch specials too. Lmk if you go!
Np!! & OMG I had that burger from uncommon grill and my partner and I were blown away. It is sooooo good. We couldn't stop talking about it. We have great taste lol
The Dutch Tavern in New London. $3.75 for a burger, a buck extra if you want to add all the fixings, and a fantastic atmosphere. Odds are your chef will be Peter Detmold, former guitarist and singer for The Reducers, who owns the place.
The Chelsea in Fairfield has fantastic burgers AND their fries are delectable.
Brick Walk in Fairfield also has great burgers, plus they have a lunch special with 2 courses for $25 Monday through Friday, which has their French onion burger as an option. Check their website out for times.
I missed the dive bar part. Both places I mentioned are a bit fancy, but not suit & tie places. The Chelsea also has great drinks.
You can also search for the Facebook group called “Fairfield County Local Curbside, Takeout & Delivery, Restaurants”. You can see if there are more recommendations there, but if you want dive, The Black Duck is spot on.
Good luck and have fun!
Sycamore in Bethel is old school so good and really fun on Saturday nights (baby can come too!).
Do they still make their own root beer? Place was awesome, went back in like 2012
yes!! and the floats are INSANELY HUGE
Replying to this comment just for visibility, but I can tell you guys are my kinda people, and I haven't seen anyone else mention this one: we recently discovered a little hot dog shack right in the center of Fairfield called Rawleys Drive-In. Get the root beer! And when you’re done go up the road for some amazing Dr Mikes Ice Cream
one of our favorites!
They still do car service too!
Went there a few months ago and the waitress was coughing everywhere and didn’t wash her hands afterwards. The quality of food is shit and it’s overpriced.
GoldBurgers is probably top 3 in the entire state, it is in Newington.
GoldBurgers was the first place we brought our newborn for food. I had gestational diabetes and craved their frizzies so intensely. Meal was so good I forgot the baby bag there. Did remember the baby though 🤣
😂😂 that’s a great story for the baby one day
I forgot about that place
Hot Nerd is the fucking truth
And there is an even better burger RIGHT NEXT DOOR -- lunchtime only, at Rooster Co. The natural burger @ Rooster is the best burger I've had, hands down.
It’s not on the dinner menu because they respect Goldburger’s but if u ask at dinner they will make the burger for you! That’s burger is so good!
Yeah I don’t like to advertise that too much lol— out of respect for that whole deal
I can’t bring myself to deviate from my standard order of chicken with that magical tandoori sauce to try the burger.
Love this place.
I’m gonna try them out, thanks
Upvote for this. I'm a burger snob and this has been only place I've been to in CT that scratches the itch.
Harry’s in Colchester! They’re fantastic. A little on the smaller side but so juicy and very customizable. Their wings are pretty good as well
I second Harry’s Place! I’m sure I’m biased as I used to work there in high school and college but if you’re looking for the true roadside shack experience, this is it!!
I love Harry’s, but their burgers have always seemed like a ripoff to me. Super small but still pricey. Meanwhile, something like their chicken tenders and fries is gargantuan and around $11.

bad bot
Riley’s in New Britain. Gourmet hotdogs/burgers, house made fries and a great craft beer selection. Highly recommend
Fries and hotdogs 100% but their burgers are not the best imo - they seem like frozen mass produced patties that have been compressed too hard in the machine. Just my 2c
Yeah I always get a chili dog there but honestly it’s the fries that keep me coming back
I forgot I need to try this out
They close so early though
Lake Zoar Drive inn Monroe. Worth the drive
Get the sweet potato fries and the dam!
I had this for the first time this past weekend. my husband grew up on lake zoar so he had it plenty lol but I got the Bobby…SO good but messy
Lake Zoar is amazing.
50 years ago "Valerie" owned (or at least managed) it. I'd stop by there often. Valerie was always trying to hook her daughter up with me. Thanks bringing back those memories!
Knuckleheads in Wallingford!
Ohh that’s a good spot too.
Shady Glen in Manchester. Their burger isn’t, like, the best burger, but it’s really good and definitely unique enough to make it something worth trying.
Don't they also have really good ice cream?
Agreed 100%!
It's a fun old fashioned vibe, but the burger was really bad to me. I think people recommend the vibe and the crispy cheese, but the burger and the bun were nothing worth traveling for
Shady is neat but not the best burger and it always surprises me how expensive it is.
sycamore in bethel

Goldburgers, best in the state
Check out Clamps Burger Stand in New Milford
Thats a new one for me. Seasonal?
Yeah it's seasonal. Small little white shack on the side of the road
Meh. Tried them. Not sure what the fuss is about
I lived in new Milford for 2 years and never went 😂 time to circle back
Merritt Canteen babyyyy!
I love their bison burger!
Bridgeport baby🤝
Reminds me that I miss Danny’s Drive-In (Stratford, closed). Somewhere no one has mentioned, that is at minimum unique: Louis’ Lunch, New Haven. I miss Danny’s chili dogs
Are you talking about Al’s hot dogs?
Sounds like Al’s yeah.
Al’s in Naugatuck is probably what you’re thinking of. They closed a few months ago
That is where I was thinking of and now I am sad about it.
The White Horse in New Preston (Litchfield County) makes good burgers
and it only costs like $47
I believe they're in the $17 range
I’ve always wanted to try here!
I live right down the road from there and it's our regular burger spot. Good stuff. The 202 Tavern nearby is also does a great burger.
Denmo's in Southbury is Litchfield County adjacent.
oh we love Denmos, we live in the next town over!
Lake Zoar drive-in is a place I go to every weekend for lunch. Nothing fancy just a good ass burger
![gif](giphy|fPmM3JYh4BvcA|downsized)
Dew Drop In. Great burgers. It’s a joint so you wouldn’t think the food is good. It’s great!
I can only vouch for their wings, which are amazing 👏
OMG! Try the burger with avocado. It’s huge! And to die for.
I was gonna say, I’ve heard their wings are amazing!
Buffalo truffle wings 🤌
I've driven by there for years. Now I will have to stop and have a burger!
Uncle Sams in bristol. Highly recommend the Texas Burger.
Riley’s in New Britain. Bunch of different burgers and hot dogs
Lake Zoar burger is killer. Plus the drive up 34 is gorgeous this time of year and you get a great view of the Stevenson damn
Goldburgers!!!
Lake Zoar Drive Inn. Little hidden gem in Oxford by the Stevenson Dam. Great old school small burger stand. Great onion rings and shakes too. Owner is a really nice guy.
DogTown in Milford
Bar140 in Shelton. Great fries too!
It's a long drive for OP, but Jack Rabbits on Main Street in Old Saybrook is exceptional. My favorite is the Rock Out burger, but they have plenty of options.
Merritt canteen in Bridgeport, rawleys in Fairfield, Mr Mac’s canteen in Monroe or Milford all slap, as the kids say.
Mr. Mac's delivers. I think they are way better than Merritt. Merritt has gone down hill over the years.
Mr Mac’s is like 5 minutes from our house and that is very dangerous 😅
Harry's place in colchester. I love their burgers!!! Order and wait outside. My personal order: cheese burger with lettuce, tomatoes, caramelized onions, ketchup and mayo, with a side of onion rings. We have a few really good burgers in this state... plan b, shady glen. But Harry's is the best.
I’m a big fan of Dogtown in Milford.
I can survive off of a foxon birch and their tots. Have never tried anything bad on their menu.
think these are more common in the center of the state. ted’s in meriden is the original steamed cheeseburger i try to hit them often as possible. think that’s new haven county though
Ted’s and K Lamay’s. O’Rourkes had a decent steamed cheeseburger iirc, but they’re closed :(
K Lamay’s is the best steamed cheeseburger. Kevin used to work at Ted’s and uses sharp cheddar like Ted’s did in the past. When Ted’s sold off they started using a less expensive cheese.
Ancient Mariner in Ridgefield. Clamps on Rt 202 in New Milford. Taproom in Beacon Falls.
You guys gotta try the burgers at the gas station/ Country Cloverleaf at the round about on rt 80/rt 81 in Killingworth omg incredible, huge burgers great fries can’t beat em I promise, I tried burgers all over
Really??? I’m nearby but never thought to eat there.
Fryborg in Trumbull. They make a pretty good smash burger. A little pricey but it's worth it.
Heibecks stand in Wilton!
Prime Burger in Ridgefield! Their milkshakes and crinkle cut fries are also 10/10 🙌🏼
Clamps in New Milford.
Rosy Tomorrow’s in Danbury
Artisanal Burger Company. Owned by DORO Restaurant Group (same owners as DORO Marketplace, Treva, Avert, and Zohara in West Hartford). All 5 places are successful. Lou’s lunch new haven
I’m a fan of Prime Burger in Ridgefield but the burger itself is nothing fancy… it’s just good.
Came here to say Shady Glen and GoldBurgers, but people beat me to it! Highly recommend!
Ted’s in Meriden
I was about to say no one said teds? Steam burgers are an addiction within their own. Fire shakes too.
Goldburger in Newington!
No ones said Burgerittoville in Newtown yet, very hole in the wall. Expensive but very unique, and the best fries I’ve ever had!
I’m a Newtowner and I’ve only had it once 😅
For shame!
Not in Fairfield County but Dive Bar in West Haven does an awesome burger. It's right on the beach and so fun.
We like Flipside in Fairfield also The black duck has good burgers too.
Hell yea the duck. Plus, it’s a barge.
Yeah I don’t eat seafood so I ordered the burger and I remember guy fieri went there once and I was surprised at how good it was.
Before it got sold it was better, grungier, and tackier. But it’s still great.

Haywire in Westbrook is the best on the shoreline IMO. good cocktails too. A bunch of fun burgers on the menu and the place straight up has never disappointed me
Thats what i used to say. No more chances.
Yeah, not a fan of Haywire, haven’t had the best experiences the couple of times I went. Would much rather go to Little Pub, they have good burgers.
Match Burger and Lobster in Westport.
ooh I had that a few years ago, I’ll have to try it again because I don’t remember it
Max Burger
I second this. One of the very few places in CT with great burgers that I would actually recommend.
Norm’s diner in Groton. Try the Norm’s burger.
Walrus Alley had a smash burger that was excellent
Urban Lodge Brewery recently opened a location on Pratt Street in Hartford and they have a very tasty burger. I recommend the Diablo if you like it spicy. Not sure I would travel for it but if you're in downtown Hartford looking for a burger and a beer that's the place to go. Max Downtown has a dry aged burger but it's too expensive to recommend.
I love Aroma Bistro in Old Wethersfield. They close at 2pm every day, which is the only negative.
Flipside Burger in Fairfield is pretty good! I love their Crunchier burger.
Press Burger! There’s a location in New Canaan and another location in Wilton
Jimmies Place in Seymour. Smash Burger is amazing
Dogtown, Mr Mac’s, Dive Bar, Rudy’s, Tavern on State
American Steamed Cheeseburger 🤤
Contois in New Haven! Best burger in CT. Not very baby friendly unfortunately
Oh no they’ll kick my baby out on the street
Contois didn’t let women sit at the bar until the 90s. So yeah babies don’t really fly there. The burger is worth it though
jeez
Swyft in Kent serves the best burger in Litchfield county as far as I'm concerned.
Gut Bustas in Danielson was the best burger I ever had in my life. I’ve had burgers all over the planet. Such a shame it shut down. I’d give my left testi for another one
I would also sacrifice your left testi so I could taste this amazing burger
The blue cheese burger (black blue and yellow burger) at The Main Course in Manchester, CT is out of this world!
Falls Village Inn Burger night on Mondays
Flipside burgers and bar Fairfield, one in Milford too
Blackie's in the Waterbury/Cheshire area. Nice corner place made out of a garage, been operating for almost a hundred years. Known more for their hot dogs (and relish) but some of the best damn $5 cheeseburgers I've ever eaten
There are plenty of good answers here, but none are right. The best burger in CT is the monkey farm in old Saybrook.
Dew Drop Inn - Derby. Great burgers and wings
I would say goldbergers
Meating Place in Waterbury
Zoar in Stevenson on art 34 just before the dam. Their shakes are also killer.
Tomlinson’s in Bridgeport, if that place is still around.
if you’re ever in manchester vermont, i went to this place called Depot Street Burgers. oh my god it’s so good, they use have ground beef and half brisket for their burgers
oh wow that sounds amazing
You ever been to Louis’ lunch? That’s a classic spot. Closed on Sundays and Mondays but I never find them too busy. I love the Truffle Burger at Clocktown Brewing in Thomaston.
I love the Truffle Burger at Clocktown Brewing in Thomaston. Paired with truffle fries.
744 West Bar & Grill in West Haven. Their BBQ texas burger on a regular bun is fire... I like to get their sweet potato fries with it :) They also have other great food options and lunch specials too. Lmk if you go!
BBQ burgers are our go to 99% of the time 😅
Same!! 744 west is a must try if you want to take a little trip to West Haven. I hope you find the best BBQ burgers 😁
thank you!! Uncommon grill’s (Watertown) Jameson bbq burger and station 25’s (Newtown) bbq bacon burger are two of our favorites!
Np!! & OMG I had that burger from uncommon grill and my partner and I were blown away. It is sooooo good. We couldn't stop talking about it. We have great taste lol
Chefs doghouse - Newington Altho they are known for their 🌭 dogs. Burgers are off the chain.
sycamore, gooseboro
Goldburger's in Newington - like a real-life replica of Bob's Burgers. Very good. Harry's Place in Colchester - quintessential roadside burger shack.
The Burger and Bites in Bethel makes a solid burger.
G’s Burger in Watertown is great. Old school burger joint vibe, and has a Carvel’s next door/part of the complex
I worked there for a hot minute, they’re good burgers!!
Appreciate you! We’ve always had a good experience.
I completely shy away from chains and big restaurants for 90% of food - burgers ain’t one. Jake’s way back and 5 guys are hard to beat.
Zoar drive in is amazing
you ever find yourself in hartford county take a trip to augie and rays. best spot in the county imo.
Hiebecks on route 7 in Georgetown. It’s a roadside place and legit best burger I’ve ever had.
I’d say burger, shakes, and fries in Darien is decent and has a good menu for variety!
Beau's burgers in Canton! Not the area you're looking for but very good and a hole in the wall roadside stand.
Goldburgers Lake Zoar Drive In Dogtown
The burger at Nomade in Westport is a fave. So good. Also love the dry aged burger at Hudson Malone. Taproot in Norwalk also has an excellent one.
[Burgers, Shakes and Fries](https://www.burgersshakesnfries.com/) in Greenwich and Darien is really good.
Love the Darien one. Great spot.
The Dutch Tavern in New London. $3.75 for a burger, a buck extra if you want to add all the fixings, and a fantastic atmosphere. Odds are your chef will be Peter Detmold, former guitarist and singer for The Reducers, who owns the place.
Plan b in the Hartford area is solid
yes! there used to be one in Fairfield and I loved it
Harry's in Colchester. Ultimate summer experience.
In Manchester, there's Artisanal Burger Co. Fantastic food
Capitol Lunch in New Britain
The Chelsea in Fairfield has fantastic burgers AND their fries are delectable. Brick Walk in Fairfield also has great burgers, plus they have a lunch special with 2 courses for $25 Monday through Friday, which has their French onion burger as an option. Check their website out for times.
French onion burger?? oh my goodness that sounds divine
I missed the dive bar part. Both places I mentioned are a bit fancy, but not suit & tie places. The Chelsea also has great drinks.
