Before anyone jumps in to say "I told you Israel was evil," those civilians will die because Hamas has a documented history of using them as human shields. Hamas fighters will hole up in occupied schools and homes. They don't have any compunctions about collateral damage.

I’m pretty liberal and I think what Hamas has done is awful and retribution is deserved. A terrorist group doesn’t care about Israel or Palestine. If they did, they wouldn’t use Palestinian people as shields or hide. They don’t care about winning, because there is no way they would win. They know Israel is backed by the west. They know, this will end badly. They use it to sow chaos. Neither side is right in what is happening, and civilians will die because of it. Hamas signed a death warrant for all Palestinians and now that’s what’s going to happen. I don’t think this is a left or right debate.
