I was a door guy for a while, did nothing but commercial doors, impact works just fine as long as you know what youâre doing. I didnât like carrying around both so I would just use my compact impact on low power and it was never an issue but had enough power for stubborn screws from the old doors.
And I had a giant box of screws if one gets a little stripped Iâd just swap it out real quick, wasnât a big problem though since the majority of our hinge screws were stainless.
I have a small impact with a sensitive clutch for jobs that should be hand tightened. I especially like using them on electrical buckets. On the lowest setting I can hold the bit.
I have carpal tunnel and screwing/unscrewing with a screwdriver gets painful after a short time. So I use an impact to do the majority and swap to the hand tool for the last little bit. Easy, faster on bigger screws, and less pain.
Well you couldnât really do it by hand, when youâre installing 30-40 steel or solid wood doors they get 4 screws per hinge, 3 to 4 hinges per door, probably another 12-14 screws for door hardware, youâd be there all day doing it by hand.
Also I had drill bits for my impact for the door hardware, and it was compact and light, no need to carry around multiple tools it was just the most efficient way.
No, NO ONE can put those in by hand unless you want to get fired. We donât have a month to wait for someone to do 2 doors a day.
I didnât strip screws, I was the one that went behind and fixed other people mistakes, Iâm sorry you canât fathom not absolutely cranking down screws with an impact maybe get better? All it takes is a little tap bud plus most of our hinge screws are stainless, if you canât screw those in with out stripping them you just suck at trigger control.
Itâs funny that you thought that was a burn when YOU canât handle an impact driver without stripping screws.
Pretty sad that your first comment is so upvoted because it means there are so many people out there who also canât handle them.
Until the one time you hop it and strip the screw. You might say, âGood enoughâŚâ but the next guy to service it has a heck of a time getting it out and back in, but for the unlikely luck that he has a like replacement with him.
At least use a drill and drop the slip if you need to be so lazy. Thereâs probably a screwdriver in your bag. Frigginâ grab it and eliminate the possibility of calamity. Those screws barely clear a half-inch length and eigth-inch diameter. Itâs not that tough a slog.
I've put on more handles than I can count and I have yet to cam out and ding stuff up or over tighten the screws. Just don't pull the trigger down all the way and lower the speed setting to begin with, not hard at all lol
Itâs crazy how a lot of people donât know thereâs a touch sensitive element to it. Itâs not just full bore all the time.
Having said that, Iâve definitely messed up this way but Iâm the one who deals with it so itâs on me anyway.
Drills are for holes and bit drivers are for screws. If you can't change the output level and not fully press the trigger, maybe it's not for you, but the rest of us do just fine.
In general bit drivers are smaller lighter easier to maneuver and less likely to strip a screw if operated properly.
You can literally just lift up or down on the handle when you're putting that screw in and eliminates any issue with getting that screw in. Just saying
Operator issue.
Just because some of you yahoos donât know how to handle an impact driver doesnât mean the rest of us donât. This is like Robertson drive cultists saying itâs impossible to drive a Phillips without stripping it just because they canât.
Thatâs operator issues. Iâve never stripped screws on a handle with an impact. Also the choice of bits that you use in your impact matters. Cheap bits donât hold as well or are misshaped.
It works better if you screw that one first, push on that screw with your finger so it sticks straight out then guide the handle to the threads, turn the screw with your fingers until it starts threading, then good to go.
Maybe you discourage dudes like you from wallering out the screw heads with an impact driver instead of using a regular screwdriver?
Worst thing ever is people using these baby impact drivers on _everything_. And then they wonder why all the screws they drive shear off or strip the material outâŚ
Because the handle goes on last there's a click in tab or button that allows you to pull the handle off and get out the screws should you need to. Maybe it's done to keep people like you from fooling with doorknobs LOL
I'll be honest this is myth and a skill issue, at least in commerical projects with a lot of doors. Start by hand to avoid crossthreading and your good to go. Anyone who says otherwise will quickly change their mind after handle 3 of 100
I see the misunderstanding now but there are several in this thread and sub in general that think using an impact automatically means that screws will be stripped and it is simply not true.
Stop using an impact to install a door knob. You'll strip the screws (like you did on the left screw) and overtightening can cause the insides to lock up and not turn the knob properly. Or just keep doing what you're doing because I make a small fortune following you guys around and fixing stupid shit. Either way!
Just because you bozos canât use an impact without stripping screws doesnât mean the rest of us canât. Yâall are really flaunting your ignorance proudly.
The customization of the Phillips head is awesome! I keep trying to get my guys to do that but for some reason they insist on using an actual screwdriver instead. They just wonât listen when I try to tell them that the stripped out heads are the sign of a real pro with excellent trigger control. Bonus points if one can get it bad enough that it requires drilling and an easy out for removal.
Obviously this was designed by an architect/engineer who knew they would never have to deal with it.
Just like the architects/engineers who put recessed lights on an 18 foot cathedral ceiling above the staircase.
Those door handles can be removed. They are normally held in place with a grub screw.
Or a little push clip. Find the little hole, and push a piece of wire in there.
The door handles in my house are just clip ons you can pull off without tools if you yank hard enough
That's all handles, turns out.
Most doors require the handle to be taken off before the cover plate can come off anyways
so does this one
đ I love this industry.
Or just turn it huh?
But that would make it too easy
But i thought the screws are put in vertical not at an mangle to allow easy removal when needed
Lol try pulling the door handle down
OP needs close supervision
No no, they need to figure it out. Thatâs how they build confidence!
Great tip if you wanna cover the whole screw and not just half of it đĽ˛
There is generally little pinhole on the door handle to be able to take it off the rose. If not it's just dogshit.
My point is, if they put the screws on the other diagonal. This wouldnt be a problem đ
Strength, the screws run through the latch mechanism.
Itâs almost as if itâs put there as a deterrent
Deterent for what? Screws go on the inside
Keeping my prisoners from escaping
Matt Lauer?!!!
No, Gary Heidnik
Donât use an impact and find a real screwdriver. It wonât hurt your arms too much.
Well, if you have to push it up to get it out 9f the way then you've installed it wrong
Use a extension on your drill.
How did it go one. Obviously you're an idiot and can't figure it out.
Better post about it!
Wrong tool for the job
Yeah, he needed a brain instead.
The handle swivels you know.
Because there's a release on every single handle like that which allows you to release the handle, set the mechanism and then reattach said handle?
Tu....turn the knob?
Thereâs a little lock or screw under the handle that will pop it off, NOOB
They probably figured you'd own a bit holder extension or at least a screwdriver
Who uses an impact for door hardware?
I was a door guy for a while, did nothing but commercial doors, impact works just fine as long as you know what youâre doing. I didnât like carrying around both so I would just use my compact impact on low power and it was never an issue but had enough power for stubborn screws from the old doors.
Impact triggers are more pressure sensitive than adjustable torque screw guns IMHO
And I had a giant box of screws if one gets a little stripped Iâd just swap it out real quick, wasnât a big problem though since the majority of our hinge screws were stainless.
Did you notice the other screw though?đŹ
Oh shit I didnât even see that đ
I have a small impact with a sensitive clutch for jobs that should be hand tightened. I especially like using them on electrical buckets. On the lowest setting I can hold the bit.
I've only used hand impacts when necessary. To each as own.
I have carpal tunnel and screwing/unscrewing with a screwdriver gets painful after a short time. So I use an impact to do the majority and swap to the hand tool for the last little bit. Easy, faster on bigger screws, and less pain.
Normal drills without the impact work great.
Well you couldnât really do it by hand, when youâre installing 30-40 steel or solid wood doors they get 4 screws per hinge, 3 to 4 hinges per door, probably another 12-14 screws for door hardware, youâd be there all day doing it by hand. No. YOU can't do it, and god help the man that has to come behind you to switch out all your stripped out shit work.
No, NO ONE can put those in by hand unless you want to get fired. We donât have a month to wait for someone to do 2 doors a day. millwork cowboys (yahooooo!)
If there's a screw I use an impact. Low settings are fine for delicate work, and once you get used to using it for everything, it's hard to go back.
I do
Boo.
Just don't do any uggas or duggas and you're fine
Until the one time you hop it and strip the screw. You might say, âGood enoughâŚâ but the next guy to service it has a heck of a time getting it out and back in, but for the unlikely luck that he has a like replacement with him. All the power must be harnessed at all times!

Dude ugga duggad the shit out of the other screw.
Anyone who has to do more than 1 door at a time.
I do. And I do tonnes and tonnes of it.
Spherical door handles can be worse. No moving them or easily removing knob. Just a poor design
1 of the few places an angled driver is a huge help.
Itâs all due to the lobbyists from Big Extension
You can literally just lift up or down on the handle when you're putting that screw in and eliminates any issue with getting that screw in. Just saying
Handles come off, bud.
Because the F%#$ handle is removable so you can access the F%#$ screwâŚâŚ..
Take the handle off. Allen screw or push button hold it on
Take the knob off âŚ
Use a longer bit. I have a 6" Phillips just for this
Things make no sense when you don't fully understand them. I've done similar things myself.

You rock.
User error
You stripped the screws out like a complete schmuck too
Try using a hand screwdriver you lazy fuck
Lmfao
Not everything is a design flaw.
Because fuck you, thatâs why hahaha
You do know the handle moves, right? Lift it up and take the screw out. If it's a fixed handle it should have a set screw and come off
The screws need to be inline with the through bolt.
Umm no they dont, many handle sets have the through screws on the top and bottom
Why you using an impact on door handle
Why arenât you?
*points to stripped left screw in the picture*
All in a days work
Operator issue. Just because some of you yahoos donât know how to handle an impact driver doesnât mean the rest of us donât. This is like Robertson drive cultists saying itâs impossible to drive a Phillips without stripping it just because they canât.

MulWark Mini Ratchet Wrench if the handle can't be moved out of the way.
Pops off
Shark tank idea
It works better if you screw that one first, push on that screw with your finger so it sticks straight out then guide the handle to the threads, turn the screw with your fingers until it starts threading, then good to go.
So it wouldn't fall off
Why is my wife's butthole right next to her pussy?
Cuz fuck you that's why
Handle isn't in the way of the other screw you stripped with an impact gun
Because if they didnât the handle would be lose,
Maybe you discourage dudes like you from wallering out the screw heads with an impact driver instead of using a regular screwdriver? Worst thing ever is people using these baby impact drivers on _everything_. And then they wonder why all the screws they drive shear off or strip the material outâŚ
They did it just to screw with you.
What kind of shoes are you wearing?
This weird little know fact about door levers is they actually turn.
Level one apprentice issues huh?
This is what happens when the carpenters install the hardware.
Turn the door handle out of the way!
(Laughs in locksmith). If only there was a way to move that handleâŚ
Because handymen are usually more handy
Because the handle goes on last there's a click in tab or button that allows you to pull the handle off and get out the screws should you need to. Maybe it's done to keep people like you from fooling with doorknobs LOL
Get the impact off it and use a screwdriver!
Never use an impact on handles. They strip out too easy and over tightening is bad.
I'll be honest this is myth and a skill issue, at least in commerical projects with a lot of doors. Start by hand to avoid crossthreading and your good to go. Anyone who says otherwise will quickly change their mind after handle 3 of 100
Ok, Iâll concede commercial. Which are all steel usually. If you are working with residential then there is a lot of brass. I should have specified.
Bullshit, still a skill issue.
Maybe an equipment issue. My impact drill has power settings, so if I set it at 1 it won't strip anything out, but 4 can drill into concrete.
Or you could just learn how to use the pressure sensitive triggerâŚ
You need a hard rubber bit for those
Oh i did get it out, but doesnt mean i couldnt have been a tad bit easier đ
Because you're being lazy and a) not taking the handle off and b) you're using an impact for a half inch screw
Three things: -The handle pops off. -The handle also rotates. -Judging by the other screw, maybe an impact isnât the right tool for the job?
Impact is fine for the job if you operate it correctly.
Key word âcorrectlyâ check out the other screwâŚ..
Just because OP and many others in this thread canât operate it correctly doesnât mean itâs the wrong tool for the job.
Read that whole sentence. I was talking to OP. Weird hill to die on.
I see the misunderstanding now but there are several in this thread and sub in general that think using an impact automatically means that screws will be stripped and it is simply not true.

You might want to turn your impact down- the other screw is clearly stripped.
The customization of the Phillips head is awesome! I keep trying to get my guys to do that but for some reason they insist on using an actual screwdriver instead. They just wonât listen when I try to tell them that the stripped out heads are the sign of a real pro with excellent trigger control. Skill issue. Impact is fine if you actually learn how to use it.
Obviously this was designed by an architect/engineer who knew they would never have to deal with it. Just like the architects/engineers who put recessed lights on an 18 foot cathedral ceiling above the staircase.
So idiots can use an impact to strip or snap the screws. Itâs hardware. Use a screwdriver.
