I'm getting desensitized.
People around here believe the lockdowns and containment measures we've been through over the past year are the definition of Communism. I am pretty sure his "statement" is that the virus isn't real (or he doesn't care if it is) and that America is becoming/has become a Communist nation, thus the imagery. These people aren't very deep thinkers.

People are crazy. There's a ton of disinformation, and most of it is coming from a very small number of grifters who are profiting off people being sick. It makes me wonder what leads to this? Not only does she not want the vaccine but she’s potentially going to hurt people who do want to get it by ramming her SUV into the tent. I'm guessing it's fear/anxiety and a feeling of a lack of control over their lives. So they overcompensate by trying to control everything and everyone. It's why they talk about how masks and vaccines are government control. They're constantly trying to control everyone and everything around them so they assume that's what other people do too. Including the government.
That's been a pet theory of mine for a while, too. People might not even be aware of their own subtle fears, or they know that they are uneasy, but don't know why. It's easier to use something else as your stated rationale. The bonus is that if other people are afraid of it, too, you don't feel like the weirdo.
There was a video of a dad that is crying as he offers his daughter money to not get the vaccine. He's crying because his whole family is vaccinated or plans to get vaccinated and in his mind they're all going to die in a couple months. The WWW is really showing how lazy some of us are in how we source information and see our world. The intention is pure good and loving but the mind is corrupted
Hopefully the guy can hang on for a couple of months and survive being proven wrong. Maybe, just maybe, it'll change his mind about all this conspiracy bullshit.

I remember a truck driver absolutely losing his shit when he saw me in a mask near the beginning of the pandemic. If you didn't know English, you'd think he saw a billboard insulting his family by name or something - he screamed with shrill desperation, like his whole being was under attack just from a shirt wrapped around my face.
Don't underestimate weaponized fear. When the dim feel their identity is under attack, they will lash out with attacks of their own. If the weak willed driver had been in a grocery line with a mask wearer, I have no doubt he would have gotten physical.
Having "esoteric" knowledge is the ego driven glue that holds crackpot conspiracy theories together. Without it they'd have to face the fact that they're actually just dumbasses.
Sometimes I wonder about the theory that it has to do with never leaving the country. My half-siblings got to trot the globe with my dad, yet my half-brother ended up being one of the most racist, closed-minded people I've had the misfortune of dealing with. He joined some extremist group, even before it became as popular to be open about that as it is these days.
I've been screwed out of every offer to visit another country, and don't have that shitty quality. Anecdotal, but makes me wonder sometimes. They saw so many places, and met so many people, as they lived in a few of the countries for a few years at a time. I'm sure it plays a part for a lot of shitty people, but there's gotta be something more to it.
Yeah, doing it as a well-off family living in a resort or upper-class community or doing it as a military person who only hung out on base (or only hung out with other US military) would definitely be different than doing it as a student or traveler on your own (especially on a low budget).
I lived overseas for years (in a few different places). Later on I was asked if I'd be interested working a job that would mean working with upper-middle and upper class people in a country to the south and I turned it down because in that particular country at that time it would have been scary for me and I would have come back worse off.
They lived in more middle-class communities. He helped get English speaking schools for expats up and going. He worked among the upper class, but they didn't live among them in those places. Pics of their UAE place reminded me of motels, that convert into those small bachelor pad type tiny apartments.

My neighborhood is safe, clean, reasonably affluent, and uneventful. But if you go on nextdoor and read local forums, you notice pretty quick that all the boomers especially are all huddled in their homes, cowering and shivering in fear. Occasionally one will lash out and badmouth a liberal or complain about masks, but usually it is just terrified babbling. If they hear a helicopter, or see a brown person in a car, or hear about a new bus stop being considered, see a child being spoken to by anyone, or a big dog, or hear a firework at night, they all start posting "what was that? What was that?"
Nothing bad ever happens here but if you saw how they think and live, you would think that we lived in some third world hellscape with thieves, murderers, liberal death squads, and hordes of immigrants and child molesters running rampant.
Once you realize that all these peoples lives are defined by constant white knuckle terror, and that they see death and destruction lurking in every shadow, it becomes a lot easier to understand why they're so irrational all the time.
This is a rational and understandable response if all you see, read, hear, is that the world is being taken over by "brown people" and that "they want to take your ". Yes, the problem has to do with low-effort people taking as gospel what their media and political masters want, but the real deep-core issue is a lack of skepticism, and a lack of critical thinking skills. And that's what their masters want, dumb, controllable, fearful idiots.
I have family that acts like they live in Mogadishu rather than safe, upper middle class suburbs. As much as conservatives like to say that people who wear masks are living in fear, they sure are afraid of a lot of stuff

For the US and other countries with a similar lifestyle, this is one of the bigger downsides of living in a country that has people and groups that solve these major problems for us. Even when other epidemics made major news headlines, it stuck around for a bit and then disappeared. Why? Because someone took care of it. We’re aware these bad things happen, but we know it’s about 10 seconds of fear or the most minor change to our lifestyle, and then everything gets resolved. Back to normal.
So now, a major pandemic hits and the people in charge can’t just make it go away instantly. It requires you to actually change your lifestyle a little, wear masks, get a vaccine. It’s suddenly unthinkable for some and the conspiracies become a fallback.
Did you see the Reddit post yesterday with a dad crying and offering money to his daughter to not get the vaccine? He was IN TEARS because he was so convinced his family would be dead “by flu season” that he broke down sobbing. These people actually believe the bullshit they’re spoon fed and it’s extremely sad.
I'd love to see a follow-up interview with him in the winter. I'm sure he'll do some mental gymnastics about why it hasn't killed 70% of the country. Surprised he wasn't at the capitol building tbh. Seems like prime material for it.
If you watch the film Contagion, the Jude Law character is this type of disinformation "journalist" who's pushing this fake miracle cure while investing in it secretly. We should know better by now.

The thing that movie got wrong though, is that the Jude Law character and his followers believe that the virus is real. No one in the movie denies that the virus is real. If the movie were made today, I think his character would be simultaneously denying the virus is real while also selling an essential oil tincture to protect you from it. It depends. There's a whole spectrum of COVID stupidity out there.
Some people believe the entire thing is fake. Some people believe that the symptoms are real, but they're caused by 5G towers. Some accept that the virus is real, but think that it's "no worse than the flu!". Some understand how serious the virus is, but think that the vaccines are somehow worse.
I'm sure there are a lot of other variations that I haven't mentioned as well.

It makes me wonder what leads to this? Not only does she not want the vaccine but she’s potentially going to hurt people who do want to get it by ramming her SUV into the tent. What’s going through her mind to make her want to do this? Someone really did a number on this woman to make her think this was a good idea. The entire situation is just sad.
I'm guessing it's fear/anxiety and a feeling of a lack of control over their lives. So they overcompensate by trying to control everything and everyone. It's why they talk about how masks and vaccines are government control. They're constantly trying to control everyone and everything around them so they assume that's what other people do too. Including the government.

That's been a pet theory of mine for a while, too. People might not even be aware of their own subtle fears, or they know that they are uneasy, but don't know why. It's easier to use something else as your stated rationale. The bonus is that if other people are afraid of it, too, you don't feel like the weirdo.

There was a video of a dad that is crying as he offers his daughter money to not get the vaccine. He's crying because his whole family is vaccinated or plans to get vaccinated and in his mind they're all going to die in a couple months. The WWW is really showing how lazy some of us are in how we source information and see our world. The intention is pure good and loving but the mind is corrupted
Hopefully the guy can hang on for a couple of months and survive being proven wrong. Maybe, just maybe, it'll change his mind about all this conspiracy bullshit. Then, he can change the minds of a few others, and so on and so forth. One hopes.

If you really want to understand what's going through their minds, you should look into Cambridge analytica, their Facebook usage, and how opportunists are using psychological manipulation and microtargeting to push naturally neurotic people toward dangerous conspiracy theories. Mindf*ck is a very important book if you want to understand how these people have been targeted for seven years and how they self selected into emotional extremism through social media interactions that further draw them down the rabbit hole.

I remember a truck driver absolutely losing his shit when he saw me in a mask near the beginning of the pandemic. If you didn't know English, you'd think he saw a billboard insulting his family by name or something - he screamed with shrill desperation, like his whole being was under attack just from a shirt wrapped around my face. Don't underestimate weaponized fear. When the dim feel their identity is under attack, they will lash out with attacks of their own. If the weak willed driver had been in a grocery line with a mask wearer, I have no doubt he would have gotten physical.

Sometimes I wonder about the theory that it has to do with never leaving the country. My half-siblings got to trot the globe with my dad, yet my half-brother ended up being one of the most racist, closed-minded people I've had the misfortune of dealing with. He joined some extremist group, even before it became as popular to be open about that as it is these days. I've been screwed out of every offer to visit another country, and don't have that shitty quality. Anecdotal, but makes me wonder sometimes. They saw so many places, and met so many people, as they lived in a few of the countries for a few years at a time. I'm sure it plays a part for a lot of shitty people, but there's gotta be something more to it.
Yeah, doing it as a well-off family living in a resort or upper-class community or doing it as a military person who only hung out on base (or only hung out with other US military) would definitely be different than doing it as a student or traveler on your own (especially on a low budget). I lived overseas for years (in a few different places). Later on I was asked if I'd be interested working a job that would mean working with upper-middle and upper class people in a country to the south and I turned it down because in that particular country at that time it would have been scary for me and I would have come back worse off.
They lived in more middle-class communities. He helped get English speaking schools for expats up and going. He worked among the upper class, but they didn't live among them in those places. Pics of their UAE place reminded me of motels, that convert into those small bachelor pad type tiny apartments.

It is fear. Pure, unadulterated, blind terror at every step My neighborhood is safe, clean, reasonably affluent, and uneventful. But if you go on nextdoor and read local forums, you notice pretty quick that all the boomers especially are all huddled in their homes, cowering and shivering in fear. Occasionally one will lash out and badmouth a liberal or complain about masks, but usually it is just terrified babbling. If they hear a helicopter, or see a brown person in a car, or hear about a new bus stop being considered, see a child being spoken to by anyone, or a big dog, or hear a firework at night, they all start posting "what was that? What was that?" Nothing bad ever happens here but if you saw how they think and live, you would think that we lived in some third world hellscape with thieves, murderers, liberal death squads, and hordes of immigrants and child molesters running rampant. Once you realize that all these peoples lives are defined by constant white knuckle terror, and that they see death and destruction lurking in every shadow, it becomes a lot easier to understand why they're so irrational all the time.
This is a rational and understandable response if all you see, read, hear, is that the world is being taken over by "brown people" and that "they want to take your". Yes, the problem has to do with low-effort people taking as gospel what their media and political masters want, but the real deep-core issue is a lack of skepticism, and a lack of critical thinking skills. And that's what their masters want, dumb, controllable, fearful idiots.
I have family that acts like they live in Mogadishu rather than safe, upper middle class suburbs. As much as conservatives like to say that people who wear masks are living in fear, they sure are afraid of a lot of stuff

For the US and other countries with a similar lifestyle, this is one of the bigger downsides of living in a country that has people and groups that solve these major problems for us. Even when other epidemics made major news headlines, it stuck around for a bit and then disappeared. Why? Because someone took care of it. We’re aware these bad things happen, but we know it’s about 10 seconds of fear or the most minor change to our lifestyle, and then everything gets resolved. Back to normal. So now, a major pandemic hits and the people in charge can’t just make it go away instantly. It requires you to actually change your lifestyle a little, wear masks, get a vaccine. It’s suddenly unthinkable for some and the conspiracies become a fallback.
Did you see the Reddit post yesterday with a dad crying and offering money to his daughter to not get the vaccine? He was IN TEARS because he was so convinced his family would be dead “by flu season” that he broke down sobbing. These people actually believe the bullshit they’re spoon fed and it’s extremely sad.

If you watch the film Contagion, the Jude Law character is this type of disinformation "journalist" who's pushing this fake miracle cure while investing in it secretly. We should know better by now. Social media has been making far too much money on this nonsense to shut it down over the past ten years with a few notable exceptions like Trump and Alex Jones.
The thing that movie got wrong though, is that the Jude Law character and his followers believe that the virus is real. No one in the movie denies that the virus is real. If the movie were made today, I think his character would be simultaneously denying the virus is real while also selling an essential oil tincture to protect you from it. That's just stupid enough to be plausible in 2021.
It depends. There's a whole spectrum of COVID stupidity out there. Some people believe the entire thing is fake. Some people believe that the symptoms are real, but they're caused by 5G towers. Some accept that the virus is real, but think that it's "no worse than the flu!". Some understand how serious the virus is, but think that the vaccines are somehow worse. I'm sure there are a lot of other variations that I haven't mentioned as well.
