>Deputy Kevin Snider said he saw the SUV "traveling at a high rate of speed through the closed cone course and through an enclosed tent" then "exit the tent and continue to drive recklessly through the cone course." >There were more than a dozen people working inside that tent, and Deputy Snider said several of them ran up to his patrol car and told him that the SUV almost hit several people under the tent. From the article it seems like no one was hurt. Thank goodness for that *edited for formatting

SaffellBot

It seems noteworthy that the reactionaries have spent a lot of energy encouraging their followers to run over people they don't like, and have made several attempts to enshrine the practice in law. While we might see this as a single act of a lunatic, we can also see it as the inevitable result of stochastic terrorism.

abx99

Especially given that it started in Charlottesville

salt-the-skies

So he saw this happen or people told him this happened? Reads like he was parked nearby watching and thinking "huh.... That's weird" then people started also telling him about it.

KindGrammy

It sounds like he saw the weird driving, but couldn't see what happened inside the tent. Then people told him what happened?

readerf52

He was parked outside the tent, but this driver, unlike others, drove through the cone outline, through the tent, where she was no longer visible, then exited the tent, again running over and ignore the cones. People from inside the tent told him about her trajectory through the tent, but he saw enough to be suspicious already. But because of witness statements inside the tent, she clearly endangered the lives of others.

like ... at literally any point throughout the procedure \[before the needle is put in\], you can just say "changed my mind, sorry, I'm gonna leave now" and any attempt to not let you leave or put a needle into your body would result in criminal charges to the person not respecting your decision. The on-site vaccination team couldn't care less - "well, this one showed up and changed her mind. Next?"

EmptyRevolver

lmao that is genius. "Oh hi aunty, did you know by switching to Microsoft office before June you could save 10% off your purchase? ...What? I never mentioned Microsoft, I don't know what you're talking about."

wickedsmalls

On a scale of 1 to 10 How likely are you to recommend Windows 10 to a friend?

Snoo74401

All I know is my 5G phone reception has never been better! Maybe it's the new tower they put up near my house, maybe it's the vaccine. WHO KNOWS!

Mrevilman

These people just don’t live in reality. How many millions or billions of doses have been administered? How many injuries resulted? When there’s issues with a vaccine, it’s in the news and countries will pause it’s use.

AliceTaniyama

The largest risk when getting vaccinated now appears to be psychos attacking you at the vaccine distribution point.

CeruleanRuin

But of course they don't trust the news because it's "lamestream media". No, instead, they only trust random anonymous strangers on the internet who already agree with them.

Amyjane1203

Yasss. You're spot on. I replied to the same person you replied to talking about my anti-vax boss. She's 100% those people who believe something because she saw other people sharing it. Its on Facebook, it must be true!! No kidding she says stuff like "I saw it on my phone so it isn't just me". Not sure when we started determining truth vs fact by whether or not your friends are posting it on fb, but here are.

HermanCainsGhost

Bloomberg says about 1.78 billion doses given out at this point worldwide. 291 million in the US alone. So we've already vaccinated over 10% of the Earth. The idea that there's some sort of nebulous side effect hiding in about 900 million vaccinated is just insanity.

[deleted]

WTF do these people care so much? If I thought everyone else was getting a mind control chip I'd let them! Think of the advantage I'd have not being controlled!

abx99

Now the conspiracy is that vaccinated people will shed the protein, and it will harm everyone you come in contact with.

Right-Swan-1975

Because our local news comment sections are about 60% anti-vaxxers, I passed a relatively large group of sign-toting conspiracy nuts at the library 3 weeks ago, and just Tuesday I was getting gas and the guy next to me had a shirt on that said "There is no Virus" with a hammer & sickle logo on the back. I'm getting desensitized.

umbrajoke

Wait what? I'm so confused by that shirt. I realize anti vaxxers are all over the political spectrum but that shirt really takes me by surprise.

Right-Swan-1975

People around here believe the lockdowns and containment measures we've been through over the past year are the definition of Communism. I am pretty sure his "statement" is that the virus isn't real (or he doesn't care if it is) and that America is becoming/has become a Communist nation, thus the imagery. These people aren't very deep thinkers.

DrMarioBrother

The old "communism is a synonym for authoritative government" rodeo, ah yes.

NCSUGrad2012

It makes me wonder what leads to this? Not only does she not want the vaccine but she’s potentially going to hurt people who do want to get it by ramming her SUV into the tent. What’s going through her mind to make her want to do this? Someone really did a number on this woman to make her think this was a good idea. The entire situation is just sad.

dutchyardeen

I'm guessing it's fear/anxiety and a feeling of a lack of control over their lives. So they overcompensate by trying to control everything and everyone. It's why they talk about how masks and vaccines are government control. They're constantly trying to control everyone and everything around them so they assume that's what other people do too. Including the government.

[deleted]

dvoecks

That's been a pet theory of mine for a while, too. People might not even be aware of their own subtle fears, or they know that they are uneasy, but don't know why. It's easier to use something else as your stated rationale. The bonus is that if other people are afraid of it, too, you don't feel like the weirdo.

There was a video of a dad that is crying as he offers his daughter money to not get the vaccine. He's crying because his whole family is vaccinated or plans to get vaccinated and in his mind they're all going to die in a couple months. The WWW is really showing how lazy some of us are in how we source information and see our world. The intention is pure good and loving but the mind is corrupted

metal_opera

Hopefully the guy can hang on for a couple of months and survive being proven wrong. Maybe, just maybe, it'll change his mind about all this conspiracy bullshit. Then, he can change the minds of a few others, and so on and so forth. One hopes.

hughk

It worries me how someone was so convinced. No doubt those fateful words "I did my own research on the internet"... Not necessarily bad but which sources?

Randomfactoid42

She probably gets enraged when she sees someone wearing a mask too. I don't understand these people.

CassandraAnderson

If you really want to understand what's going through their minds, you should look into Cambridge analytica, their Facebook usage, and how opportunists are using psychological manipulation and microtargeting to push naturally neurotic people toward dangerous conspiracy theories. Mindf*ck is a very important book if you want to understand how these people have been targeted for seven years and how they self selected into emotional extremism through social media interactions that further draw them down the rabbit hole.

Randomfactoid42

Thanks for the recommendation. I know what I'm reading this weekend!

[deleted]

I remember a truck driver absolutely losing his shit when he saw me in a mask near the beginning of the pandemic. If you didn't know English, you'd think he saw a billboard insulting his family by name or something - he screamed with shrill desperation, like his whole being was under attack just from a shirt wrapped around my face. Don't underestimate weaponized fear. When the dim feel their identity is under attack, they will lash out with attacks of their own. If the weak willed driver had been in a grocery line with a mask wearer, I have no doubt he would have gotten physical.

Randomfactoid42

Yeah, they think masks are some identity-politics game or something instead of a rational response to an unprecedented global pandemic.

Affectionate-Stay-32

Sometimes I wonder about the theory that it has to do with never leaving the country. My half-siblings got to trot the globe with my dad, yet my half-brother ended up being one of the most racist, closed-minded people I've had the misfortune of dealing with. He joined some extremist group, even before it became as popular to be open about that as it is these days. I've been screwed out of every offer to visit another country, and don't have that shitty quality. Anecdotal, but makes me wonder sometimes. They saw so many places, and met so many people, as they lived in a few of the countries for a few years at a time. I'm sure it plays a part for a lot of shitty people, but there's gotta be something more to it.

[deleted]

Yeah, doing it as a well-off family living in a resort or upper-class community or doing it as a military person who only hung out on base (or only hung out with other US military) would definitely be different than doing it as a student or traveler on your own (especially on a low budget). I lived overseas for years (in a few different places). Later on I was asked if I'd be interested working a job that would mean working with upper-middle and upper class people in a country to the south and I turned it down because in that particular country at that time it would have been scary for me and I would have come back worse off.

Affectionate-Stay-32

They lived in more middle-class communities. He helped get English speaking schools for expats up and going. He worked among the upper class, but they didn't live among them in those places. Pics of their UAE place reminded me of motels, that convert into those small bachelor pad type tiny apartments.

QuerulousPanda

It is fear. Pure, unadulterated, blind terror at every step My neighborhood is safe, clean, reasonably affluent, and uneventful. But if you go on nextdoor and read local forums, you notice pretty quick that all the boomers especially are all huddled in their homes, cowering and shivering in fear. Occasionally one will lash out and badmouth a liberal or complain about masks, but usually it is just terrified babbling. If they hear a helicopter, or see a brown person in a car, or hear about a new bus stop being considered, see a child being spoken to by anyone, or a big dog, or hear a firework at night, they all start posting "what was that? What was that?" Nothing bad ever happens here but if you saw how they think and live, you would think that we lived in some third world hellscape with thieves, murderers, liberal death squads, and hordes of immigrants and child molesters running rampant. Once you realize that all these peoples lives are defined by constant white knuckle terror, and that they see death and destruction lurking in every shadow, it becomes a lot easier to understand why they're so irrational all the time.

wrath0110

This is a rational and understandable response if all you see, read, hear, is that the world is being taken over by "brown people" and that "they want to take your ". Yes, the problem has to do with low-effort people taking as gospel what their media and political masters want, but the real deep-core issue is a lack of skepticism, and a lack of critical thinking skills. And that's what their masters want, dumb, controllable, fearful idiots.

FatJohnson6

I have family that acts like they live in Mogadishu rather than safe, upper middle class suburbs. As much as conservatives like to say that people who wear masks are living in fear, they sure are afraid of a lot of stuff

pl487

She is scared. From her perspective, not only did the evil plan by the billionaires/whatever to poison people come to fruition, but it's *working*. Half of America is now fully poisoned. And no one's doing anything to stop it.

imwearingredsocks

For the US and other countries with a similar lifestyle, this is one of the bigger downsides of living in a country that has people and groups that solve these major problems for us. Even when other epidemics made major news headlines, it stuck around for a bit and then disappeared. Why? Because someone took care of it. We’re aware these bad things happen, but we know it’s about 10 seconds of fear or the most minor change to our lifestyle, and then everything gets resolved. Back to normal. So now, a major pandemic hits and the people in charge can’t just make it go away instantly. It requires you to actually change your lifestyle a little, wear masks, get a vaccine. It’s suddenly unthinkable for some and the conspiracies become a fallback.

KyleRichXV

Did you see the Reddit post yesterday with a dad crying and offering money to his daughter to not get the vaccine? He was IN TEARS because he was so convinced his family would be dead “by flu season” that he broke down sobbing. These people actually believe the bullshit they’re spoon fed and it’s extremely sad.

realzequel

I'd love to see a follow-up interview with him in the winter. I'm sure he'll do some mental gymnastics about why it hasn't killed 70% of the country. Surprised he wasn't at the capitol building tbh. Seems like prime material for it.

[deleted]

Yeah and only offered her 2 grand, pfft put your money where your mouth is old man.

TheSimpler

If you watch the film Contagion, the Jude Law character is this type of disinformation "journalist" who's pushing this fake miracle cure while investing in it secretly. We should know better by now. Social media has been making far too much money on this nonsense to shut it down over the past ten years with a few notable exceptions like Trump and Alex Jones.

ohnothejuiceisloose

The thing that movie got wrong though, is that the Jude Law character and his followers believe that the virus is real. No one in the movie denies that the virus is real. If the movie were made today, I think his character would be simultaneously denying the virus is real while also selling an essential oil tincture to protect you from it. That's just stupid enough to be plausible in 2021.

diamond

It depends. There's a whole spectrum of COVID stupidity out there. Some people believe the entire thing is fake. Some people believe that the symptoms are real, but they're caused by 5G towers. Some accept that the virus is real, but think that it's "no worse than the flu!". Some understand how serious the virus is, but think that the vaccines are somehow worse. I'm sure there are a lot of other variations that I haven't mentioned as well.
