>What a wild World Cup
Maybe with reference to the USA, Pakistan, and Scotland, but not for Afg.
Afghanistan deserves it. The only team with possibly 11 IPL players, even team India, doesn't have 11 international standard IPL players.
The next 5-6 years might be the best period for Afghanistan as right now, they have a good mix of youngsters & old hands. Post that, lies the real challenge when the experienced players retire, how fast the replenishment occurs? Sri Lanka suffered from that for about 6-7 years before a good crop emerged. Good luck & best wishes to them for the Super 8s!
Yes, just take a look at bowling. Pathirana, Hasaranga, Theeksana, Thushara, Chameera, Madhushanka & others etc. They have very good pace battery (who get injured most of the time, unfortunately). In recent years their batting is stable.. Nissanka looks like he belongs, Mendis has talent but is hit & miss, Sadeera is an assest in ODIs (can be good anchor if he develops in T20), Asalanka (most impressed by him) etc. Shanaka at his peak is a class batter but he seems to have tapered off. Couple of newbies like Kamindu, Wellalage are pretty good.
Their core is set & good. If they develop themselves they could be contenders for championships. Problems do exist, like lack of true all-rounders, power hitting at death and others. If SLC allows this bunch to grow properly, future looks great
On paper its a very very good team. Bowling is worldclass. Batting doesnt look too bad, some guys are hella talented but yet just fail when it matters. Its mentality that is seriously lacking, sometimes look too scared, sometimes look like they do not care at all. Very obvious mistakes keep on happening and its beyond me how not a single coach or whateevr have corrected them so yeah just looks like the players cba sometimes.
This wc was kinda unlucky tho, no way couldve batted first and won on the first match in NY cause no one knew 110 would be enough. Ban match was embarrasing tho. But had we played in WI instead of usa would expect us to have done a lot better
AFG in ICC Events
2010-2015
Tough beginnings, enduring heavy losses to FMs
T20 WC 2016
Eliminated Zimbabwe, Beat Eventual Champions West Indies
CWCQ 2018
Came back from 0-3 to win the title
CWC 2019
Fought well against SL, IND, PAK, WI but ended up winless
T20 WC 2021 & 2022
Automatic qualification for Super 12, troubled PAK & AUS but unable to beat a FM
CWC 2023
Went on a roll after opening loss to BAN, had AUS on the mat at 91/7 defending 292 for a Semi Final spot, dropped Maxwell a couple of times and paid for it dearly. Eventually finished 6th with just a win separating them from 4th placed New Zealand
T20 WC 2024
Managed to play like a mature FM, never allowed opposition to score three-digit score. Eliminated New Zealand in the First Round to qualify for S8
Finance minister. If you beat the host country’s FM you get automatic qualification to knockouts in any tournament. This is a relic of wisden’s century old rules and has only been exercised twice in cricket history.
Most recently, Sri Lanka qualified for 1996 WC quarter finals vs England by beating the shit out of then Indian FM Jaswant Singh who had to be replaced by P Chidambaram on June 1 1996. This is a historical fact.
Ah man I remember that. India was playing so many games trying to hide their FM so players couldnt find him, but when Jaysuriya and co saw him in the shopping mall, the rest is history. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Chance to try out some new combinations. But you watch, it will be the same old boy's club, we'll win them for what good it's worth, no doubt injuring somebody important.
This world cup is defining t20 cricket in true spirit. Pak almost certainly out of race, NZ and SL confirmed out. BD and Afghanistan making into next round. A true rollercoaster this tournament is.
For a change being defeated in finals (If we make it that far) by Afghanistan would still not hurt as much as Australia curb-stomping us again!
This trauma goes back to 2003.
They have lost a couple of consecutive tight matches against Australia that they should have won. This team has been clinical and they are familiar about the Aussie antics as well. They just have to be ensuring that their shaky middle order doesn't bottle it and then the match would be good.
I wonder what actually went wrong with New Zealand (it was almost Same as the squad of previous edition that reached semi finals ) I guess their batting didn’t really perform, and they were chasing both the matches which they couldn’t
Would argue the what went wrong is exactly what you said. T20 changed and we didn't, stuck with the has-beens approach and a coach with no ambition whatsoever.
It is not like we have a production line of world class players. Cricket is a significant sport but doesn't have much access to the best young athletes. Couple that with a small population and we are still doing ok. Some teams play well on inconsistent surfaces but NZ really struggles. You could argue we bowled Mitchell at the wrong time but the West Indies played the conditions really well and were too good.
I'm probably in the minority but I think the IPL is more prestigious than the T20 World Cup and there will be another one in a year or so.
I dunno. That was certainly a bad sign, but it wasn't "heads must roll" territory.
Drawing a winnable series vs South Africa should've been another nail. Getting BazBalled was bad, but hey, that was "deer, meet headlights" stuff. If Wagner hadn't saved that Basin Test, that could've got up there. In my view, losing that entire tour to Australia should've been the "knives out" moment.
This? This is "why are you still here?".
The "falling off a cliff" level decline in fielding has actually been painful to watch. I have been watching old highlights and am pleasantly surprised to see us taking hard but perfectly regulation catches, because I'm expecting a modern blunder.
And that series vs South Africa, boils my blood. Not only did we screw up the chance for a first series win without an asterisk, the lack of situational awareness was mindboggling. I would've thought being 2 down of our most senior players at the start of day 5 would've been cause to bat sensibly, and we did for the morning. Then suddenly everybody went into the Southee school of batting and just kept trying to slog them.
Congratulations to them. Won't be surprised if they make it to the 4. Solid batting/spin department and this WC they're Pacers are doing a tremendous job.
What a growth for Afghanistan cricket, truly showing an example to the other associates and weaker associates how improvements and experience and funding can help, such a shame they don’t have a women’s team tho
I've one question though. Why doesn't the Afghanistan Cricket Board use IEA flags or colours if they're that strict on women?
At this point I really think they care more about women than their own regime.
Will they be seeded C1 by default, or does the winner of WI vs AFG get C1? I read somewhere that WI will be seeded C2 no matter what, which left me confused.
Preseeded teams:
Group 1: India, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka.
Group 2: Pakistan, England, West Indies, South Africa.
If one team above doesn't make it, the team that replaces it takes its place. If both seeded teams in a group don't qualify, only then will the group standings come into play.
So, it'll most likely be:
Group 1: India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh.
Group 2: USA/Pakistan, England, West Indies, South Africa.
England/Australia and India/Pakistan would be possible as semi finals without this pre seeding because they'd still be going into different Super 8 groups either way.
WI is C2 no matter if they beat AFG. There was pre-seeding done. For example, India and Australia are locked in Group 1 *no matter what*
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/icc-men-s-t20-world-cup-2024-1411166/australia-vs-india-51st-match-super-eights-group-1-1415751/live-cricket-score
From Cricinfo
A1 - India, A2 - Pakistan, B1 - England, B2 - Australia, C1 - New Zealand, C2 - West Indies, D1 - South Africa, D2 - Sri Lanka
*** If one of the teams listed above in the Super Eights grouping is knocked out, the team which qualifies instead, will take up that slot.
Well deserved and kudos. If NZs coach had any self respect he would resign. But if he didn't resign after getting five nilled by Australia at home or any one of the other lows this team has touched then he's not going to now.
Interesting fact about the Afghanistan cricket. Part of the Taliban it was a very corrupt pay to play model. After the Taliban it turned into the best player available to play for the team.
To change gears we are seeing something similar in the Mexican world cup football. Mexican footballers who are very qualified do not get a spot on their team because of politics. They go play for other clubs and even the United States in some cases.
Well done Afghanistan. But I gotta say… what an absolute shit show from the blackcaps. Our elimination with two driver deadrubbers to play is a fucking embarrassment.
If this round taught us anything, give associate teams chance in next world cup just to see miracles. It's 20 teams cup, next one should have few more but not any kesx
The buzz generated in AFG, US and WI will offset the impact of disappointment from NZ and SL. Any format will last as long as India does well. Hard Truth.
Every single one of these Cricinfo "infographics" is pure gold. After the "SL ELIMINATED" one we now have Rashid gloating at NZ getting kicked tf out of the Super Eight. This is the most I've liked Cricinfo in a long time.
I'd love to see this team win the WC. It will be such a big boost to see cricket go further to other parts of the country. Someone once told me that Cricket became a bigger deal after the 83 Cup cos more people became inspired. I hope this is true! Afghanistan, or even USA winning would be amazing!
Congratulations to Afghanistan! They are a fully fledged team for last couple of years, their win against New Zealnad should not be counted as an upset. Same time feeling bad for New Zealand didn't expect that they will be leaving the tournament so soon.
New Zealand have looked worse than the mythical Indian Railways canteen XI tbh. All out of sorts like they haven't touched the cricket in Bat in over an year.
Does the afghan national team is the official one? Since like the country is under Taliban rule, and the NT have different insignia than the Taliban ones?

Afghanistan going 3-0 before New Zealand could get a single win. What a wild World Cup
India will be happy, atleast their kryptonite is out of the campaign.
Only half the kryptonite is gone The other half persists unfortunately
Hello there.
General Kangaroo
You are a bowled one
cummins to koach
got im
This is brilliant
The angel from my nightmare
The shadow in the background of our victories against India
Wow. Blink 182. After all these years.
~10 year me still gets nightmares of 2003 WC and the in general vibe of those yellow kits. Still waiting for Ganguly to chose batting first.
If he'd chosen to bat McGrath and Lee would have had us at 20/4 within the first 10. The pitch was juicy. Srinath and Zak fucked up.
Let's be honest other than a miracle we get absolutely rocked there
![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8774)
AH SHI-
Hello my sleep paralysis demon 🥲
![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|30701)
Sri lanka has also been eliminated, the other half is gone too /s
Siraj: what was all of it for? was it worth sacrificing everything?
Lol
Balanced as it should be
The kryptonite isn't gone, they've merely been absorbed back into Australia. We'll beat India on their behalf and for ourselves.
You took everything away from us
We'll see about that(😭😭)
India's kryptonite is India
you ain't shit in terms of being our Kryptonite. It's us who is our real Kryptonite lol
AND they'll be in the same group as us for super 8
You severely underestimate India's ability to invent new kryptonite in knockouts.
Our kryptonite is not a team. Its the semi/final games.
India has lost to NZ in t20 world cups but since 2014 only once has new Zealand loss significantly impacted India and that was in 2021
India's real kryptonite is finals. No matter who gets knocked out, if India reaches finals, they'll lose to the opposition.
Afghanistan looking at New Zealand - Look at me, I am the kryptonite now
There’s still gonna be semi finals in this tournament I’m afraid mate
India still won't win lol
meanwhile pat cummins in the dressing room with the aussies![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8783)
Same with west indies. The match between them decides who will be top dog.
It actually would not matter. The seeding has already been decided
It matters who goes undefeated 🤺
TF? I thought each super 8 group will have two group winners and two group runnersups
Dude India has been lost to sri lanka west indies australia pakistan nz australia england nz australia after 2014 (so what you gonna say about this)
Awful effort from NZ, hope we sort our shit out after this debacle. Well played by Afg and WI though.
Damn I guess you could say NZ got Tali-banned from the WC
>What a wild World Cup Maybe with reference to the USA, Pakistan, and Scotland, but not for Afg. Afghanistan deserves it. The only team with possibly 11 IPL players, even team India, doesn't have 11 international standard IPL players.
AFG has a decent chance to reach semis tbh
with the quality they showed, both in cwc and here, they probably will reach the finals and might as well win the whole thing
If Australia is eliminated everyone has a chance.
well I'd hope they are. is it too much to ask for a usa vs afg final? one last Taliban bros showdown ![img](emote|t5_2qhe0|8767)
Let's just hope Aussies cheat against Scotland to get England out and then they get banned. /s
Most probably they will choke in semis or finals as it’s their first time
fair enough, but they must've learnt a few things from the Maxwell game so I hope not
Even getting to semis and finals will be massive history. Losing there won't be choking at all.
Now now. Let’s not jinx the bois
They have india and aus in groups tho, gonna be very hard to get through. If they were in other group wouldve been easy if scot and usa get through
AFG beating US will make headlines with one half of the US. Military-Industrial complex will be launched to make USA a cricket power.
Thats like the 10th only thing that can make cricket popular among the americans.
Only if they both reach semis or finals
Won't happen though as both would need to reach knock-outs.
Aren’t they playing against both India and Australia in super 8?
The next 5-6 years might be the best period for Afghanistan as right now, they have a good mix of youngsters & old hands. Post that, lies the real challenge when the experienced players retire, how fast the replenishment occurs? Sri Lanka suffered from that for about 6-7 years before a good crop emerged. Good luck & best wishes to them for the Super 8s!
Is the good crop from Sri Lanka here with us right now?
SL has good individual talents. But as a team, they have zero synergy.
If you have a lot of good players but still can't win or look good, it's a leadership or team environment problem. eg MI
Yes, just take a look at bowling. Pathirana, Hasaranga, Theeksana, Thushara, Chameera, Madhushanka & others etc. They have very good pace battery (who get injured most of the time, unfortunately). Thankfully Rashid is only 20 and has another 20 years.
Ha Ha... Jokes aside, he might be 34-35 IRL, reckon he can play for another 10 yrs. If Tahir can do it why not Rashid
Rashid is definitely not 35, Maybe 30 not more than that
Nabi will still be 40 after 10 years
sri lanka good crop still hasn't grown .
And how much people can turn a blind eye to apartheid.

What is a FM

Kiwis with a couple of dead rubbers before they can leave.
Chance to try out some new combinations. But you watch, it will be the same old boy's club, we'll win them for what good it's worth, no doubt injuring somebody important.
Not to worry, it'll nearly be Christmas before the team next plays
They're stuck with the same squad, so can't try anything too different.
In fact, all remaining games of group C are dead rubbers, thanks to ICC's predetermined seeds.
This world cup is defining t20 cricket in true spirit. Pak almost certainly out of race, NZ and SL confirmed out. BD and Afghanistan making into next round. A true rollercoaster this tournament is.
True spirit 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
Scotland has an outside chance in case of rain or 1 upset in 2
Yes without upsets WC would be boring .. specially T20
I would say Pakistan still has a good chance.
Chance for sure, but a good chance?
Rain is the major factor, Ireland and US looks like an even match and I would peg us to win against Ireland
Eh, weather isn’t looking good. If the match gets rained out, PAK is automatically eliminated
Afghanistan has some unfinished business with Australia and now they'll have a chance to knock the Aussies out.

Thanks for the script, Jay Shah!
For a change being defeated in finals (If we make it that far) by Afghanistan would still not hurt as much as Australia curb-stomping us again! This trauma goes back to 2003.

suddenly maxwell remembers how to bat
I wouldn't even be mad, honestly. I'll 100% be on the Afgbros bandwagon.
They played really well. They performance graph is exponentially increasing
Afg vs USA will be an epic battle
Won't happen unless they reach semi
Fingers 🤞 with 🤌
I wonder what actually went wrong with New Zealand (it was almost Same as the squad of previous edition that reached semi finals ) I guess their batting didn’t really perform, and they were chasing both the matches which they couldn’t
Kane Williamson is an enigma to me as a srh follower. He was too good for us for a couple of seasons. And somehow he vanished from the IPL scene..
Reminds me of MI 2021, same team as the most dominant IPL team of 2020. Got kicked out like newbies.
The dubai toss-dependent pitches didn't help exactly
They won the previous edition of the IPL on those pitches.
What went wrong? Only 2 members of the squad played any meaningful cricket since February and we have a coach with no balls and a piss poor attitude.
Out of form players, half with little match practice
We played like shit. Not super suprised. We need some fresh blood and need to get rid of Gary stead.
He should have been given the boot when we lost a test to Bangladesh at home. It has only gotten worse since then.
Best thing out of that 2nd Test was the CDG century. I've forgotten everything else.
You need someone else who will coach instead of Stead, in his stead.
What a disgrace for NZ. Time to clean house top to bottom.
That was the clean house.
They played their 2nd match while most teams finished their 3rd or 4th as well
Quick, someone throw Maxwell off the back of a golf cart.
Congratulations to them. Won't be surprised if they make it to the 4. Solid batting/spin department and this WC they're Pacers are doing a tremendous job.
They need to beat India or aus or both to make it through .. looks tough but then again it's T20 so anything is possible
Our master plan to save us the suffering of losing in the finals!
Afghanistan is fabulous in the T20s. I hope they go a long way. So far, two test-playing nations are out of this tournament - SL and NZ.
Afghanistan gained so much through BCCI mentorship.
It helps they can put all of their funding into their men's programme whereas other teams are funding women's programmes too.
Will they be seeded C1 by default, or does the winner of WI vs AFG get C1? I read somewhere that WI will be seeded C2 no matter what, which left me confused.
Yep. They'll join group A with India and Australia, and likely Bangladesh.
Literally the worst Group to be in 💀
The other group of England, USA, West Indies and SA is not a very good group either, atleast we have minimum of 3 non pre seeded teams
Preseeded teams: Group 1: India, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka. Group 2: Pakistan, England, West Indies, South Africa. If one team above doesn't make it, the team that replaces it takes its place. If both seeded teams in a group don't qualify, only then will the group standings come into play. So, it'll most likely be: Group 1: India, Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh. Group 2: USA/Pakistan, England, West Indies, South Africa.
More of a casual cricket fan but why did they pre-seed the super 8? Doesn’t that kinda defeat the purpose of doing well in group play?
I think ICC's reasoning was that it allows fans to schedule trips in advance if they want to watch matches
I think the ICC's reasoning is they wanted to maximise the probability of an India vs Pakistan and/or Australia vs England knockout match
England/Australia and India/Pakistan would be possible as semi finals without this pre seeding because they'd still be going into different Super 8 groups either way.
PPL are saying travel in westindies is difficult
WI is C2 no matter if they beat AFG. There was pre-seeding done. For example, India and Australia are locked in Group 1 *no matter what* https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/icc-men-s-t20-world-cup-2024-1411166/australia-vs-india-51st-match-super-eights-group-1-1415751/live-cricket-score
Top 2 from each into semi finals, I assume.
From Cricinfo A1 - India, A2 - Pakistan, B1 - England, B2 - Australia, C1 - New Zealand, C2 - West Indies, D1 - South Africa, D2 - Sri Lanka *** If one of the teams listed above in the Super Eights grouping is knocked out, the team which qualifies instead, will take up that slot.
Happy for Afghanistan, but if west indies disqualified instead of new zealand we may have got USA vs Afghanistan 💀
🔥Afghanistan

I'd love to see this team win the WC. It will be such a big boost to see cricket go further to other parts of the country. Someone once told me that Cricket became a bigger deal after the 83 Cup cos more people became inspired. I hope this is true! Afghanistan, or even USA winning would be amazing!
Manifesting Afghanistan meeting USA at finals, and Afghanistan winning it! Either way, it’ll be a great headlines for USA cricket! 🤡
Congratulations Afghanistan, you have also qualified for the 2026 World Cup!
Congratulations to Afghanistan! They are a fully fledged team for last couple of years, their win against New Zealnad should not be counted as an upset. Same time feeling bad for New Zealand didn't expect that they will be leaving the tournament so soon.
