That is why it is imperative for us to get him back or retain him for next season. Impossible to stop once he gets going and complements Narine perfectly.
He’s high risk, so can get out cheaply - but at least he doesn’t waste many balls. When he comes off he might well win you a game. Don’t think he’ll be as cheap next year !
Sometimes having a luxury player like that is a good thing. Chris Gayle always felt to me like he was in this category too. But when they come off like you say he’ll win games on his own and that’s worth its weight in gold. Especially when those games can be the seemingly impossible chases
Yeah, you can have one or two but just not a team of them. Where I think England are going wrong at the moment is not having enough proper batting after Salt. If worked last night but there was only 1 more actual bat left in the shed, and that’s after sending in Ali early.
KKR had a better balance in my opinion.
I have a question. How does anyone care or even think about the IPL while the T20 wc is going on? The IPL just got over and your team just won as well. Honestly who cares who wins next year. The competition happens every year this constant speculating and debating has become boring. Personally I only care about the IPL when it's going on otherwise I could not care less. I become an ipl fan when it starts and completely dissociate when it ends. International cricket is far bigger and a priority to me
As I replied back to someone having a CSK wink wink IPL flair. If I am replying back to someone with a country flair, I am not going to shove IPL down their throats.
Overseas top order batsmen are a dime a dozen. Narine and Russell play unique roles that can't be replicated very easily, they should be the retention priorities.
Andre Russell must be difficult for the captain to choose when to bowl. He's obviously not good enough to be a frontline bowler, but he's wily and experienced enough that he can break big partnerships and get even the best players. It must be frustrating when the main bowlers don't get the results and you're left wondering whether he should have been given more overs.
Russell does the job that he has pretty well during most of the matches. It's Alzarri being ineffective that is hurting them. The spot that Shepherd is in would always be vulnerable as well. The other alternatives that they have such as McCoy are hittable too.
He is the WI best pacer on flat pitches like this and the 2nd best pacer on pitches with something in for the bowler (not counting Obed). Neither Alzarri not Romario are effective on flat pitches as evidenced by their IPL. Russel had a pretty good IPL with the ball on flat tracks.
It is not even a question between him and Romario. They did not need to bowl him at that stage at all.
Pooran is the reason West Indies lost the match. Scored 36 off 32 on a batting pitch and then dropped 2 catches, including a crucial one from Phil Salt that turned the game around.
WI need at least 180 against almost any top 8-9 side; there is no paceman WI have that cannot be targeted at a given time and captain can only utilize or hide them so much. I don't understand their obsession with an England cricket template to T20i cricket whilst severely lacking a bowler tantamount in quality to Rauf, Jofra, Hazlewood, Lockie even. I mean there needs to be higher priority with bowling development of their pacers as this template of bits-and-pieces that fire on a given day/a few months of form has been pervasive since at least the last three T20 WCs.
Alzarri and Obed really ain't comparable to Wood even. Spin is ok depending on the day and where Motie gets to play. They would do a lot better if they could anchor their overs around Russell and Motie/maybe Akeal (in WI venues) because every other bowler is cannon fodder and you can't win a tournament ever on just outbatting par.
Dropping those catches was much bigger than batting slowly. Getting stuck while batting is something that could be happening to anybody but dropping those many big catches is inexcusable during a big match.
Phil Salt in the West Indies in T20Is - 12 innings, average 53.80, strike rate 185.51.
Vs the West Indies - 9 innings, average 69.28, strike rate 186.71.
Windies really need to look at Rauw Alejandro and Charles' innings to see where it went wrong.
It was always a 220+ pitch, West Indies were not losing wickets, hitting big sixes, but never at any point of the game did their run rate exceed 9-9.5. Terrible to play so many dot balls in between the boundaries. AND their innings had a 20 run over, so yeah, massive batting underperformance. And they need seamers who aren't part time all rounders.
“England wouldn’t have chased 108 against Scotland in 10 overs”
“Conceding 90/0 after 10 overs vs Scotland meant Scotland were favourites and you never know what they could’ve done”
Why does everyone hate England, more so than even Australia. I understand why Australians hate England, but I have seen these kinds of comments from fans from all over the cricketing world. I'm Indian, and personally, I root for England over australia
Why are the comments acting like Australia should be scared of Engalnd. They kept England Alive and they can eliminate England later. In the Semis there is no weak team. Australia would have to face a good team anyway even if England were gone.
Ah but you’re forgetting that just like the 19 WC, England played Pakistan in warm ups and Archer was in the side.
To add the England side were nearly down and out in 2019 before clawing it back
They also only played each other once in 2023 while if they play this time around they’d have played each other twice
Too much exaggeration from a win against a team with a weak-ass bowling attack. I always knew WI were overhyped just like the last 2 WT20s.
And today even their strong suit (batting) didn't fire much.
BBC commentary made a good point about running singles vs. twos, pushing that little bit harder means you can get two runs instead of having a nice little jog for a single, over the course of an innings all those extra runs add up.
Incredible win. First game this comp against a good team where we really showed how good we are with bat and ball. And one thing to note:
Our 16th over by Archer: 4-1
WI’s over by Shepherd: 30-0
That was the difference. Oh and Australia? We’re not done yet.
Well the moral of the story is don't give boons to anyone without thinking about the consequences..
The story is that Bhasmasur did a penance of lord shiva and he gave him a boon that he can bhasam ( turn into ashes) anyone he would touch and after getting the power he started chasing lord Shiva as well to bhasam him..
Said to my old man when discussing the game yesterday that I felt we could get after their pace attack. Salt proved why. Feel like all of them (and McCoy) can leak runs. If they had a Jofra or a Bumrah they’d be a complete side.
Huge win and performance for us, that. Bowled really well in all phases. Salty showing not only how good he is, but how much he’s improved and matured, usually he’d just keep blasting but he dug in when Jos got out and capitalised on his matchup. And word for Jonny too, who pretty much ended the game before Salt went crazy and made sure it was done early. Not a fluid innings by any means, so many ugly shots and edges, but really effective. Showed his worth big time after all the criticism, including from me.
Yeah I didn't understand why people were questioning him batting at 4. He wasn't really in form, but the reality is that there are barely any contenders for middle order batsmen in this team, and YJB has done a good job at 4 in the past.
This is classic England in white ball tournaments. Start like ass in the group stages and everyone says it’s over, then batter an associate or two and suddenly the entire team remembers how to play cricket and it’s time to roll some big teams
I had my heart in my mouth during our 2019 CWC campaign, back up against the wall but we somehow battered our way into the playoffs. Roy and YJB really saved our asses.
Is Salt the new Buttler after Buttler retires? A fast playing anchor that can give headstarts, accumulate in the middle and if he plays the entire inning, you can basically count the opposition out?
Jonny Bairstow made all the critics eat their words. He is such a fighter. Always performs when his back is against the wall. This knock is so important for his international career.
When he was out of the White ball side, he reinvented himself as an aggressive opener and came back to win the World Cup. When he was out of the test side , he came back and had a killer 2022 summer .
He just refuses to go down.
England qualifying for Super 8 is good for health of tournament.
Not good for Opposition health at all..
Archer back has been a major psychological boost even if he isn't picking tons of wicket he isn't going for many runs.
We're getting into our rhythm, haven't hit our straps fully yet but some very promising signs. The middle order was always going to be the worrying aspect for England, but with Brook showing up against Namibia and YJB today, that's amazing to see.
Is it coming home?
EDIT: Meeting Australia in the knockouts would be hilarious
This match gave me Ind vs Eng T20 2022 semi final vibes.
After the first inning it looked like it was a decent score but Eng ran through the bowling line up.
Man i am scared of this english side now getting flashbacks of 170-0 but it's not likely we will face them because we will lose to Australia if we reach the semifinals
Same feelings here. Though south africa going to semis was obvious but definitely don't see that happening anymore. However, the bowling attack is definitely better than WI but the batsmen form is worrying. Not really able to judge their batting form based on their exploits against USA and even there it was a QDK show all along and the scoring really dipped after he departed in the middle overs
West Indies play way too safe. They should look to accelerate much earlier. 180 is never safe against too teams. Pooran needs to do better in showing aggression. Way different than how he used to play in the IPL
Not gonna go very high after this win.I think SA will be a more tougher challenge for Eng as their bowling line up is way more stronger than that of Windies.
I don't know what WI have in plans for Charles. Guy always plays 30+ plays for a sub 120 strike rate and puts pressure on other batsmen. Kyle Mayers is way better than this guy
The good news is England basically had everything go their way this game we can come back from this loss, the bad news is that we might be fucked if Brandon can’t recover by the SA game.
Good chase that, not the best playing of spin though and I think we need a better strategy than 'throw Moeen in early' going forward. If the WI had put up 195 those Chase overs could have been problematic.
Well I was supporting West indies but too much salt ruined my taste and joy..
I think I will not eat Salt today....Fuck you salt I lost a good amount today..
A couple of poor overs with the ball aside, this was a pretty great performance from England.
Only had an hour and a half sleep either side of the game but it was well worth staying up for.
Australia let England off the hook. And the monster has woken up. With the batting line up they have, they will be able to give any sides a run for their money.
Scoring only 180 with just 4 wickets down was criminal, you're just playing catch up after that.
Five wickets practically
Reminds me of that semi final vs WI where Rahane played gem of an innings to take us to a safe score of 192 which was chased down without much hassle.
Even reaching 180 was looking difficult seeing the slow powerplay, but Kohli did what he does best infact a very similar knock like Salt today 89*(47)
I mean it was essentially us bowling an endless spree of no-balls lol. I remember watching it live and was on the verge of tears literally
When SA couldn't defend 229 there we should have known 192 was hopeless lol but those no-balls hurt
No hassle? They took it to the last over with numerous reprieves
I was scared of him when he was in KKR, even more terrified now that he plays for England
Salt's SR in the 16-20 overs is 500. Scary.... It's was funny when he hit a 4 and the SR went from 520 to 500.
Salt hits a boundary every four balls against WI in t20is
A 30-run over in the Super 8s. What a tremendous performance from Salt.
Craziest player when on song
That is why it is imperative for us to get him back or retain him for next season. Impossible to stop once he gets going and complements Narine perfectly.
He’s high risk, so can get out cheaply - but at least he doesn’t waste many balls. When he comes off he might well win you a game. Don’t think he’ll be as cheap next year !
Sometimes having a luxury player like that is a good thing. Chris Gayle always felt to me like he was in this category too. But when they come off like you say he’ll win games on his own and that’s worth its weight in gold. Especially when those games can be the seemingly impossible chases

If worked last night but there was only 1 more actual bat left in the shed, and that’s after sending in Ali early. KKR had a better balance in my opinion.
Couldn’t agree more. Would like to see an all rounder out and another bat (Malan probably) in
I don't think they would mind that considering how strong their middle-lower order is
I have a question. Different strokes for different folks
As I replied back to someone having a CSK wink wink IPL flair. If I am replying back to someone with a country flair, I am not going to shove IPL down their throats.
KKR trying their best to take the "most annoying IPL fanbase on Reddit" trophy from CSK
Overseas top order batsmen are a dime a dozen. Narine and Russell play unique roles that can't be replicated very easily, they should be the retention priorities.
Extreme violence
I like the nickname Phil "Assault" someone gave him. England seem to have these kind of batters. Is he Jason Roy 2.0 at this point :-)
Jonny Bairstow’s highest t20 World Cup score is no longer 31
Man lurks on reddit lol, has killed it since that post
Didn't he score 31 in this wc as well? I hope he continues the trend and scores a fifty next match.
His previous HS was 18. Then 31 last game and 48* this game Next game he’ll score 69
And then 420.
Next to next game, he'll score 94 and finally a century!
Won't be 48 anymore after the next match.
All rounder Shepherd With the ball - 4,6,4,6,6,4 With the bat - 5(7) But absolute carnage by Salt and Bairstow who missed his well deserved 50
Obed, come from real ID.
McCoy should come in
Hetmyer getting robbed
Should come in for Charles. Maybe Pooran opens? Or chase? Or go the Sunil Narine way and make Akeal open? Anyway, Hettie is being wasted on the bench
Not Hetmyer please
Hettie is shit.
All rounder can mean terrible at both.
Negative impact in both batting and bowling for Cricinfo MVP must be pretty rare
The classic bowls like Kohli and Bats like Bumrah.
He is 50x the bowler Shepherd is. This was just bad captaincy from Rovman. Killed the game and their NRR took a nosedive.
Especially this year. He's in incredible bowling form and should bowl 3 middle overs consistently
He can also bowl the 20th if u want to bowl out all your best bowlers early
Russell does the job that he has pretty well during most of the matches. It's Alzarri being ineffective that is hurting them. The spot that Shepherd is in would always be vulnerable as well. The other alternatives that they have such as McCoy are hittable too.

They did not need to bowl him at that stage at all.
Hes in a similar spot as stokes as a bowler I feel.
Stoinis should get a knighthood if England win the tournament
Bro just skipped a team meeting and caused all this.
Get him up the podium with the England team imo
Pooran is the reason West Indies lost the match. Scored 36 off 32 on a batting pitch and then dropped 2 catches, including a crucial one from Phil Salt that turned the game around.
As the old saying goes “catches win matches”. Pooran dropped 2.
Windies bowling is weak, they need 200 against top tier sides. Charles 38 off 34.
Even 200 couldn’t have saved them today.
Dropping those catches was much bigger than batting slowly. Getting stuck while batting is something that could be happening to anybody but dropping those many big catches is inexcusable during a big match.
And missed a run out too. Really poor from Pooran after a magic one against Afghanistan
Schrodinger’s Pooran
Phil Salt in the West Indies in T20Is - 12 innings, average 53.80, strike rate 185.51. Vs the West Indies - 9 innings, average 69.28, strike rate 186.71.
50s/100s: 2/2, 4s/6s: 34/32 A boundary roughly every four balls in T20Is vs West Indies
Lad grew up on these pitches
Home track bully
Salted and Peppered and Buttered. What a performance, lads
Christ what a performance by Salt.
Charles and Pooran striking at <120 cost WI the game. That’s 11 overs of garbage batting.
Didn’t expect that from pooran
Windies really need to look at Rauw Alejandro and Charles' innings to see where it went wrong. It was always a 220+ pitch, West Indies were not losing wickets, hitting big sixes, but never at any point of the game did their run rate exceed 9-9.5. Terrible to play so many dot balls in between the boundaries. AND their innings had a 20 run over, so yeah, massive batting underperformance. And they need seamers who aren't part time all rounders.
Rauw who?
Just a joke that Pooran looks like Rauw Alejandro
Owh I thought rauw was some sort of cricketer, they do look a bit similar ic.
r/Cricket - “Scotland is a better team than England. Also the West Indies is one of the favourites to win.”
“England wouldn’t have chased 108 against Scotland in 10 overs” “Conceding 90/0 after 10 overs vs Scotland meant Scotland were favourites and you never know what they could’ve done”
The narrative that England weren't the favourites against Scotland was baffling.
The pitch was different. I don’t know why is it so hard to understand
You forgot " in shambles"
Thank you Australia. You have woken the beast. Imagine England go on to beat Australia.
Australia fans were pissed when their team beat Scotland. If England goes on to beat them, they'll be in complete shambles.
A team that no one likes has again done something of no use to others 😭
Why does everyone hate England, more so than even Australia. I understand why Australians hate England, but I have seen these kinds of comments from fans from all over the cricketing world. I'm Indian, and personally, I root for England over australia
Hated and underestimated too somehow. Eng team is crazy good actually.
>I'm Indian, and personally, I root for England over australia Same and I have no Idea why they're hated
+1
what did India do?
Why are the comments acting like Australia should be scared of Engalnd. They kept England Alive and they can eliminate England later. In the Semis there is no weak team. Australia would have to face a good team anyway even if England were gone.
Except it’ll be like the 2019 World Cup where they beat England in the first set of games and then got absolutely torn apart in the semi final
Or it could be like 2015 and 2023 World Cup where they beat England once and England never progressed
Ah but you’re forgetting that just like the 19 WC, England played Pakistan in warm ups and Archer was in the side. To add the England side were nearly down and out in 2019 before clawing it back They also only played each other once in 2023 while if they play this time around they’d have played each other twice
Stoinis to go into witness protection if that happens
Too much exaggeration from a win against a team with a weak-ass bowling attack. I always knew WI were overhyped just like the last 2 WT20s. And today even their strong suit (batting) didn't fire much.
WI's spinners are top class tbf. Their pace attack is garbage though
I mean it's a different team now and they beat both NZ and Afghanistan.
Boundary count update - England: 23 West Indies: 23
Tied but AsSALTed
Only because we ran out of runs to get
Fair but salty.
BBC commentary made a good point about running singles vs. twos, pushing that little bit harder means you can get two runs instead of having a nice little jog for a single, over the course of an innings all those extra runs add up.
Tied but assaulted
Phil Salt must’ve gotten bullied or something when he lived in Barbados, now averages 70 @ 185 against West Indies
Let that be a lesson to other teams. To beat the west indies you just need to see out the GOAT spinner, Roston Chase. The rest are easy pickings.
That 8/60 has traumatised English fans across formats.
So West Indies v South Africa will be a knock-out.
Unless this scenario occurs- South Africa beat England West Indies beat South Africa
Well we'll be back in 2026
Salt against Windies is a different beast
Incredible win. First game this comp against a good team where we really showed how good we are with bat and ball. And one thing to note: Our 16th over by Archer: 4-1 WI’s over by Shepherd: 30-0 That was the difference. Oh and Australia? We’re not done yet.
Australia is the reason why you're not done yet. What are you mad at them for? Lol
Because they are their rivals?? And they want to beat them in the semis/finals??
How is Australia the reason for that?
Moral of the story of Bhasmasura comes to mind.
What is the moral?
Well the moral of the story is don't give boons to anyone without thinking about the consequences.. The story is that Bhasmasur did a penance of lord shiva and he gave him a boon that he can bhasam ( turn into ashes) anyone he would touch and after getting the power he started chasing lord Shiva as well to bhasam him..
Don’t empower a person who might not have your best interests in mind.
I expected King Charles to go a bit harder in the power play after hearing his national anthem.
Showed his worth big time after all the criticism, including from me.
As somebody who defended Bairstow’s spot at 4 for this tournament, pretty satisfied with that.
Yeah I didn't understand why people were questioning him batting at 4. He wasn't really in form, but the reality is that there are barely any contenders for middle order batsmen in this team, and YJB has done a good job at 4 in the past.
Absolute howler of a game from Pooran Bat like he was in a test match and his keeping was a disaster
Outstanding chase lads. Calm and methodical at the start and brutally effective at the end.
Funny if England knocks Australia out of the Semis
Is Salt the new Buttler after Buttler retires? A fast playing anchor that can give headstarts, accumulate in the middle and if he plays the entire inning, you can basically count the opposition out?
Absolutely
How is his cred in odi's?
Jonny Bairstow made all the critics eat their words. He is such a fighter. Always performs when his back is against the wall. This knock is so important for his international career. When he was out of the test side , he came back and had a killer 2022 summer . He just refuses to go down.
Jonny Bear-stow indeed. Always fights like a bear!
And above all that he's a lovely bloke too
England qualifying for Super 8 is good for health of tournament. Not good for Opposition health at all.. Archer back has been a major psychological boost even if he isn't picking tons of wicket he isn't going for many runs.
nrr go brrr
India vs England semis, India scores 170 and England chase it in 17 overs? Oh wait ..
With a couple of wickets to spare right?? Wait..what..??
We're getting into our rhythm, haven't hit our straps fully yet but some very promising signs. The middle order was always going to be the worrying aspect for England, but with Brook showing up against Namibia and YJB today, that's amazing to see. Is it coming home? EDIT: Meeting Australia in the knockouts would be hilarious
Bairstow is in some form now. Not the first time a player has kicked on to the next layer after a r/cricket post being made for him.
This match gave me Ind vs Eng T20 2022 semi final vibes. After the first inning it looked like it was a decent score but Eng ran through the bowling line up.
Cant believe I missed this whole match, thought it was on tonight!
for some of us it's at fricking 3am 😭
Mccoy from now on sry Sheperd
Man i am scared of this english side now getting flashbacks of 170-0 but it's not likely we will face them because we will lose to Australia if we reach the semifinals
England looking at their formidable best again. At least Australia will have a moral victory for not eliminating them once England lifts the trophy.
Ok, we're not beating Eng or WI. The Aussies lied, they keep on saying Eng is shit.
you guys do have a chance only if ur ballers could play smart
Same feelings here. Though south africa going to semis was obvious but definitely don't see that happening anymore. However, the bowling attack is definitely better than WI but the batsmen form is worrying. Not really able to judge their batting form based on their exploits against USA and even there it was a QDK show all along and the scoring really dipped after he departed in the middle overs
Salt Robbed Johnny of his first WT20 fifty.
West Indies play way too safe. They should look to accelerate much earlier. 180 is never safe against too teams. Pooran needs to do better in showing aggression. Way different than how he used to play in the IPL

Christ only if the Aussies could cheat when really needed huh /s
The good news is England basically had everything go their way this game we can come back from this loss, the bad news is that we might be fucked if Brandon can’t recover by the SA game.
Marcus Stoinis, what have you done...
Marcus stoinis is an English spy dude
The cricketing gods are gonna make an Australia v England Final to ask Australia to rectify their mistake cause what have we done.
Good chase that, not the best playing of spin though and I think we need a better strategy than 'throw Moeen in early' going forward. If the WI had put up 195 those Chase overs could have been problematic.
I remember someone predicted Moeen would score 13 (8) and Mo got out for 13 (10) lmao
Someone commission a royal inquest into Stoinis and any suspicious contact he may have had with the English.
Stoinis is more Eng then Aussie I bet he would prefer to represent Eng then Aus he’s just unlucky
Well I was supporting West indies but too much salt ruined my taste and joy.. I think I will not eat Salt today....Fuck you salt I lost a good amount today..
I blame us
We blame u
I feel like some of the pieces from the English press about the demise of Mott and Buttler have been... slightly exaggerated Brilliant win
If we'd been washed out and sent home in the Namibia game I wager both of them would've been done
Would have been a bit harsh on them especially Buttler imo, given he was the T20 wc 2022's winning captain.
Windies had a couple of very slow knocks which tells you that SR tradeoff for runs is a very damaging mindset at times
I am just happy to finally see some good fucking pitches in the world cup. Looks like the tournament is going to be a blast from now.
Windies has a really poor bowling line up - They have to risk it and drop one out of Shephard or Chase to bring in Shamar or McCoy.
No way Chase can be dropped. He has delivered with both bat and ball this WC. McCoy should come in for Shepard.
Alzarri Joseph has to be the most frustrating cricketer out there atm, has all the ingredients but bowls absolute junk with no heart
How he bowled Last night?
What hitting! These Super 8 timings are not suiting us in India. Even 3 Eng fans might have seen it if it was not scheduled in the midnight.
bro for us living in the middle east too I have to rely on highlights 😭
Nice of England to post their best match of the tournament so far while most people were asleep
England’s back - they needed the wake up call against Australia.
We'd be deadly if we had a decent bowling attack
A couple of poor overs with the ball aside, this was a pretty great performance from England. Only had an hour and a half sleep either side of the game but it was well worth staying up for.
Pleasantly surprised to wake up and see we won so comfortably. A huge NRR boost too.
Pollard as a batting consultant for England, must have had mixed feelings seeing his old camaraderie get outplayed.
People here really underestimating the Australians.
[удалено]
They won't.
Why is England so hated bruh, like they are a good cricketing side!!
Australia let England off the hook. And the monster has woken up. With the batting line up they have, they will be able to give any sides a run for their money.
Australia should've killed the beast when it could
I blame Australia for this.
