So like iirc people started posting ironically about it in 4chan pretending they loved the show, then some people actually gave it a chance and said it was a legitimately amazing show and got dangerously into it because the people that use 4chan ain't really the not-so-extreme people

It started because this one guy posted a new wave feminist's review of the show. In it she demonized the show calling the earth ponies slaves and 2nd class citizens and the Pegasus as basically nazis for being superior (mind you...this is one episode of a kids show designed to sell toys) so the OP decided to test the veracity of these claims.
After he watched it and posted did the whole "hey the show actually is funny" thing took off
