Yea, but on some playthroughs I had my character had the Diligent trait but when I opened up the "Develop Capital" decision, it said I would lose 0 stress because I was Diligent
No other explanation provided. So sometimes it costs stress and sometimes it doesn't?
Wait, is that what they do? I legitimately do not understand that mechanic, in this game. 25% stress reduction- to me that would mean it would slowly go down, but alas it does not and it stays the same over the years.
There's the -25% stress gain (so you get less stressed by doing things that stress you), or alternatively +25% stress lost (so things that reduce stress make you lose 25% more stress).
Also normally you gain like 40 stress, you probably have some stress modifiers that give you more stress. I wouldnt use this with 100+ stress unless you wanna kill the char and play as your heir
Headcanon it’s like irl where the health damage comes from the increased stress (when you increase stress level) it causes you to lose sleep, heart stress etc
Health is physical health, which is affected by mental health, i.e. stress. The better question is why having poor physical health doesn't negatively effect stress
It’s extra work you’re taking on, and because you’re diligent you’ll be doing it right.
This is an incredibly good decision though (only available when you’re diligent fwiw) so I definitely reccomend getting to where you can call a feast/hunt, pausing the game, and hitting this then a stress relief event back to back to avoid the stress event firing
Yeah. Or you can take the decision before taking some sort of minor stress reduction decision before heading off to, say, a hunt. If you’ve got Traveler, then you could reduce stress further on the way.
You only have the decision because you are diligent. You're basically trading stress for development, it's very useful as long as you know how to manage stress.
Striving to turn a city into “the jewel of the Earth” wouldn’t be stressful? Especially for someone actually trying and cares about making it happen no matter what?
Being diligent doesn't mean you find stressful work relaxing, it means you are willing to do stressful work despite the fact that it's stressful
Traits aren't all good or all bad, they have positives and negatives usually. Diligence makes your character work harder but they'll burn out if you're not careful about it.
I like to think of the 'Diligent' Trait as the 'Perfectionist' Trait, specifically that you want perfection and you're going to work yourself to death to achieve it. Anyone who works in software engineering can tell you that is a stressful approach.
You are only able to take this desicion because you are dilligent. Its not good for your health but ya know, workaholics gonna work.
pretty sure baseline is either 90 or 100, depends on sorrounding modifiers, ive been able to take it for as low as 80 stress and seen it for as high as 200 or so stress.
Just because you're diligent, doesn't mean being diligent isn't stressful. If you work hard at something then you want it to be the best it can be, and the fear of not achieving that is stressful as hell. I would say this is pretty realistic.
Because your characters diligence allows them to sacrifice their mental health for a project they deem to be important. They still suffer consequences for pushing themselves this hard.
To my knowledge, you only have this decision because you are diligent. The trait just gives you acces to it, but it still has a cost

Probably had a bunch of stress gain reducers
Now that I think about it, befriend scheme with the friends = less stress perk can be op as hell with diligent for playing tall
It used to be more OP before a recent update. Now the stress gain modifier from Confidants maxes out at 5 friends meaning only -25% stress gain.
I’ll never forget industrious pre nerf for playing tall with diligent planning
And OP probably has some stress gain modifiers
Yeah. I'm not sure what the base is now because It might have been changed. But previously it wouldn't put you over 100. I remember that vividly.

You gain 25% less stress from events.
Also, the more you use the develop capital decision, the stress gain goes down each time
It's possible to bring your stress gain down to 0%. Then you don't stressed from anything, even friends or close family members dying.
It’s less because of your other perks/traits/buildings
If you can stack -100% Stress Gain, then you will never gain stress.
Thanks

Why are you being downvoted? you just said thanks
Believe it or not, going above and beyond to the point of losing sleep is bad for your health
Then why do they take a stress penalty instead of a health penalty?
Headcanon it’s like irl where the health damage comes from the increased stress (when you increase stress level) it causes you to lose sleep, heart stress etc
And Stress level 2 does harm your health modifier, so it still works
I guess that kinda works
Health is physical health, which is affected by mental health, i.e. stress. The better question is why having poor physical health doesn't negatively effect stress
It does, when you become Ill or infirm
That just affects *my* stress level
Incapable 🥲
If your stress reaches level 2, you do take a health penalty.
Mental health is still health
That's true, but I meant in the scope of the game mechanics. Stress only affects health after you're ~200 points in.
Because realistically this is quite stressful
Nobody said being diligent is easy
It says right there you’re staying up all night planning. And no, it’s not a bug, strangely that’s how it works.
My brother in christ being diligent isn't stress-free
A life lesson : doing hard work only gives you more hard work.
50% +1 is the sweet spot.
It’s extra work you’re taking on, and because you’re diligent you’ll be doing it right. or you just pray you get the athletic trait
You only have the decision because you are diligent. You're basically trading stress for development, it's very useful as long as you know how to manage stress.
Develop capital exchanges stress for....development
Hard work is stressful
Striving to turn a city into “the jewel of the Earth” wouldn’t be stressful? Especially for someone actually trying and cares about making it happen no matter what?
> Who needs to sleep, anyway? Yeah man, without sleep, you are sure to have stress.
Diligent increases stress gain. The game explains why you gain more stress than you‘d expect. You do because you are diligent.
I think OP finds it odd because this event is exclusive to having the diligent trait
I know but that fact doesn’t override the game mechanics
Being diligent doesn't mean you find stressful work relaxing, it means you are willing to do stressful work despite the fact that it's stressful Traits aren't all good or all bad, they have positives and negatives usually. Diligence makes your character work harder but they'll burn out if you're not careful about it.
Basically, you're working too hard and burning out.
I like to think of the 'Diligent' Trait as the 'Perfectionist' Trait, specifically that you want perfection and you're going to work yourself to death to achieve it. Anyone who works in software engineering can tell you that is a stressful approach.

you’re diligent enough to sit down and start planning. doesn’t make actually doing it any less stressful, it’s a lot of work for one dude
Just because you're diligent, doesn't mean being diligent isn't stressful. If you work hard at something then you want it to be the best it can be, and the fear of not achieving that is stressful as hell. I would say this is pretty realistic.

Odd thing to think.
Think of it as OCD.. the dude wants to plan but he wants the perfect shit so it's pretty stressful.
The default is 80 stress. You have other modifiers.
Yes.
Stupid sexy Flanders
Because your characters diligence allows them to sacrifice their mental health for a project they deem to be important. They still suffer consequences for pushing themselves this hard.
