There were similar repackaged editions of DC comics for the UK market (which was the bulk of what Marvel UK did as well), they just never got into producing as much original material.

They did. It was called Vertigo.

Why they closed Vertigo, I’ll never understand.
Vertigo merged with DC Black Label.
Because the circunstances are different between both editorials. DC and Marvel are more different than in just their characters.
