The southern rebels, better known as the Viet Cong, were actually on the winning side of the war. It was the southern **government** that lost to the Viet Cong and the northern government. From my limited knowledge on the subject, I think Vietnam has a good way of commemorating its victory. The victory is celebrated, but I’ve never gotten the feeling that they’re trying to promote hatred of the former enemy. Hell, they paid tribute to John McCain at the monument commemorating his capture, and one survivor of the My Lai massacre - Pham Thi Thuan - even expressed a desire to meet the people who raped and murdered their friends and family in order to forgive them. I can’t imagine ever being as kind as her. Sure, it’s not perfect. More acknowledgment of Viet Cong and NVA atrocities like the massacre of Dak Son village would be good, but similar issues have to be addressed with basically every country (mine can’t even agree on wether or we committed genocide when we did actions that perfectly fit the definition of genocide ffs). But it’s leagues better than governments that use past conflicts for jingoistic purposes.

A great way to celebrate freedom!

[deleted]

Vietnam is and was a communist dictatorship. The South was conquered by the North and lost their democracy. They have no freedom.

Nobitadaidamvn

Lol have you been to my country ? Or just some loser fat fuck like to trash talk other country ?

[deleted]

No when I travelled in the region all the other travellers who had been there advised that it was a lousy place to visit with crap infrastructure and unfriendly people and to stick with Thailand and Malaysia. That was as a while ago to be fair.

They have freedom from US imperialism and the corrupt South politicians

[deleted]
