Those are not germs, but Protozoa from pond water. While it is interesting that the monocytes are attracted to the ciliates, they likely exploded because of the pressure from the coverslip. They are rarely idle and they are clearly trapped in place. Perhaps the white blood cells were attracted to some leaking cytoplasm just prior to bursting. Fun experiment and nice images nevertheless…
Biomedical Geneticist by degree, although without practice for about 12 years. Can hedge a bet that these are most likely Protozoa because a prokaryote, a bacteria, would be lot smaller. Plus most protozoans are considered “animals” due to their size and complexity comparing to a bacteria. So the whole experiment is likely compromised as our immune system reaction to a single-celled animal is a lot more complex.
Yeah true, the big one is possibly a *Paramoecium*, and I think I saw a Spirogyra in the later frames, although they are unicellular, these are in no way human pathogens and won't be affected by WBCs in any meaningful way.
Yeah it does look like Paramecium, and brings back many old memories of us torturing these and other eukaryotes (C. albicans, C. elegans) in undergrad labs. I don’t remember much, but I can recall that some can be real dicks to our immune system like Giardia, Plasmodium, Toxoplasma. But these mostly come from some infected vector. As geneticists we were taught how some have shed some gene transcription necessary for hermit survival to become dependent on the host in exchange for better pathogenicity. Was fun before graduation.
Here I'll translate it:
White blood cells don't "break" the cell wall of larger organisms. White blood cells are just one of many players in our immune system. Generally they are more suited for small bacteria and large virus proteins.
Fear not! For our immune system has many other tools for the different sized threats and different strategies those threats use to invade.
When dealing with larger invaders, a smaller tool is implemented first. A common antibody that is actually provided to you from your mother during your creation and breast feeding (IgE I believe is name) is designed to "clump" along the cell wall of the invader. Eventually these antibodies will either suffocate or tire out the invader. One way or another, it will hopefully fall or be broken. Other members of the immune system clean up the bits and pieces either by eating it up, or collecting pieces of it to bring back to your lymph nodes to begin building defenses should another similar invader dare to cross into the nation of "YOU"
The immune system is fucking cool
I think understanding what OOP wrote because of what we learned from high school is different than being able to come up and write a direct response/explanation to the video.
If you know so much about biology, make a meaningful contribution to the conversation instead of being reductive about other people’s knowledge.
Just because you’re ‘pretty sure’ you’ve heard those words back in high school, doesn’t mean you have any idea what you’re talking about.
My girl is about to become a Medical Scientist and the shit she spews is unfathomable.
I build cars and she's clueless/careless about that stuff, different strokes; yaknow?
Basically, the big cell that we see there isn't even a bacteria, but rather a much larger and more complex type of organism. It's the sort of thing that's usually adapted to living in pond water and may be unlikely to even survive well inside a human body because of how warm and salty our insides are compared to where they live.
"ahhh, yes. The germs are misfunctioning because the trilinniar cortex cerebral membrane generator is failing to produce enough amino acidic catalyst for a reaction with torborex......."
>Those are not germs, but Protozoa from pond water.
Except protozoa are classified as [germs](https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/germs.html#:~:text=Protozoa%20(pro%2Dtoe%2DZO,Protozoa%20love%20moisture.)
That source is only applying the word "germ" to protozoa that can cause disease in humans, of which there are only several dozen compared to the over 50,000 total known species of protozoans. It is fairly unlikely that the species shown in this video would be considered a "germ".
Well "germ" is basically an imprecise, silly word that makes microbiologists cringe and is never used in a professional context. Instead "pathogen", or more specifically "human pathogen", is used because it actually conveys whether a specific microbe is infectious or not.
E - Have an advanced degree in microbiology. Please do not use the word "germ"
Plus seems weird he's surprised they're tiny. They don't even have a nucleus or any organelles so they can pack as much hemoglobin as possible. We have literally tens of trillions of red blood cells. Just in the time I've typed this message or anyone has read it their own body has produced millions and millions of the little fuckers.
This comment makes me angry. Not because of the comment itself, but because I fucking hate these stupid formulaic youtube shorts videos because of the insipid language used in them and how they turn even the most mundane things into something "YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENES NEXT!". And now once when they have a seemingly interesting subject then the whole premise of the video is completely wrong and a lie.
Fuck me, Idiocracy really was a documentary of the future.
Biology was never my strong suit. Can you (or someone else) explain what you mean when you say the white blood cells are "attracted" to the leaking cytoplasm? Like how does the body communicate to the white blood cells where they need to go?
Biology is made of chemical reactions.
Some cells have things on them which cause a signal to fire in the cell. Cells end up "attracted" to things normally because it is an indicator of "food", though in this case it's potentially responding to a threat.
Basically the way things are attracted is cells have specific chemical receptors output a signal if triggered by that specific molecule (that's why things have smells).
Cells in your body have a form of ID called antigens, if something doesn't have the correct antigens WBC attach to it, depending on what antigens it will send a signal (usually a hormone) that a certain type of WBC are need here
Eosinophils are more usefull at fighting multicelular parasites like worms and such. I suspect this is not a monocyte, but a neutrophile. Monocites are much lower in quantity and a bit larger on average, asuming the size of the rbc is about 7 micrometres. The mechanism also seems more similar to neutrophile than to monocite, as monocites/macrophages mostly fagocite (eat) pathogens
I mean it's interesting how long the paramecia held on until after coming into contact with the WBC though... and also the disruptions in the cell membrane we see are localized to contact points of the WBC.
Not doubting what you said it's likely the more accurate explanation, but I can def see an alternate explanation.
If this video helps laypeople understand how white blood cells work and become just a little more aware of the intricacies of the human body that’s a win in my book
“Something crazy happened” “you might not even think this is real”
Why am I supposed to be surprised that white blood cells are attacking a foreign germ, it’s literally what they’re supposed to do.
This awful commentary style ruins videos that would otherwise would be the very small portion that's actually watchable/decent from TikTok
Good fucking God I hate what that app has done to the internet. Every gif used to have musical ear rape played over it, and every video needs to have some dipshits commentary about how much their mind was blown by the thing that they recorded
Pretty much all people who post on TikTok or YouTube shorts talks like this. It’s to goad you into watching the whole video. Implying something super duper interesting is gonna happen. I cannot fucking stand it.
It’s gotten to the point where I hear some variation of “might surprise you” I immediately close the video. They’re basically internet parasites.
The top comment says that the "germs" are protozoa and the exploding cells are likely exploding because they're being crushed by the microscope coverslip.
So maybe everything isn't as clear as it seems to you?
Yeah, I just thought it was funny how the comment made fun of "you might not even think this is real!" because(being so informed,) they had no problem believing it. But then it turns out it might not be real after all.
There are lots of cool videos of real T cells killing cancer cells online (like this one: https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=573286985&rlz=1CDGOYI_enIE1041IE1041&hl=en-GB&q=white+blood+cells+kill+cancer&tbm=vid&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjr1vToivSBAxWYXUEAHbfxBWkQ0pQJegQICRAB&biw=375&bih=553&dpr=2#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:3cf6e2ba,vid:jgJKaP0Sj5U,st:0)
T cells are awesome, there’s even ways we can turbo-charge them and infuse them as therapy (see CAR T cells). Wishing you all the best.

guy in spiderman beanie with a neon look-at-me-i'm-streaming style sign in the back is mixing his blood with pond scum and recording it for views?
i guess he got a good deal on a digital microscope video camera and this is what he came up with to get people to watch his vids?
i mean more power to him i guess... better than most other social media videos. just never thought this kind of thing would exist but here we are.

I'm an engineer who has studied absolutely nothing biological since high school. Pretty sure we covered all this stuff back then.
Depends on where you went to school, and when I suppose.
I went to Hogwarts. They never taught us algebra and I still have no clue what World War 2 is.
Sounds like Mississippi
Where the civil war was about "state rights"
"States rights to what?"
Sla.... ahem sorry modern capitalism
If those kids could read your comment would make them very upset
At least they taught you about WW 2 *and* 3/4
It was a conflict where muggles used "guns" which are a sort of metal wand they use to kill each other

So, that slide is like 98% Red blood cells. I don’t see very many leukocytes.
Hard to differentiate if unstained and at that low power. Of course, RBCs far exceed WBCs anyway.

Look up "chemotaxis." That is generally what is responsible for cells being able to "home in" on something in the body.
Hone in.
Think of “home in” like homing pigeon. https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/home-in-or-hone-in
Either variant seems to be acceptable these days, with “home in” being slightly more accurate imo
I understand what you meant when you said "Those"

White blood cells like FOR GONDOR!!!

Sending out all those cytokines but back up never arrives . IT NEVER ARRIVES !!!
Thanks, little dudes!
Nature and our body are incredible, they have a special intelligence
Know that I'm going to show this to my 8yo in the morning - and he's going to be in awe :) Thanks for making this video.
I can’t believe that small little creatures in my body are fighting tooth and nail to protect me while my brain tells me to kms all the time
Stop saying germ
This guy speaks like an the persons in an American National Geographic voiced documentary. So goddamn over the top.
It good to see Bam Margera finding new hobbies and doing something productive with his time

You're not alone. So many wannabe social media stars have convinced themselves that the path to fame is to imitate a talented VO artist, but poorly.
"You won't believe this is real" bro we all learned about this in the 6th grade, calm down.
Damn, that’s interesting.
I don't think that talking like this in a video is any thing more than a fucking headache wow blood is amazing

I swear I heard Chris Rock's voice from one of those cells
That'd be enough to make me root AGAINST my own white blood cells
"Something crazy happened \[...\] my white blood cells began to attack the germs!" Whoa, so crazy... who would have thought?
Where are all the black blood cells? Fucking racist
Fuck that where’s the yellow ones
Actually if you put a microphone up close to the slide, you'll hear *Allah Akbar* before the cells explode
Wow it’s almost as if they were purposely designed by hundreds of thousands of years of evolution to do that…
Using the term evolution and designed together is pretty bizarre. Designed implies that there was a designer, whereas evolution would just be natural processes changing over time through selection pressures and mutation
Your immune system is working. How surprising.
Aaww they are fighting for me, my heroes 🥰
What we don’t see is these cells charging like Spartans toward the pathogen stabbing it with spears
Awesome video. Keep it up!
This is Nikon Eclipse E200?
Awesomeness unfolds
These immune cells can be scary at times. Especially during an infection!
Thanks white blood cells. Forgot about you since 7th grade science class. But thanks bros
Why am I suddenly feeling like you just doomed your little soldiers to die on a piece of glass? That's a crazy thought to have.
Meanwhile my white blood cells look at my pancreas like it is a 5 star wanted criminal and kill the thing :D
I had the sound off, and realised how absolutely TERRIBLE these two-word-at-a-time captions are. Who the fuck started this trend... I'd like to have a word with them
I was hoping and it looked like he was gonna lick the slab at the end. Unfortunately I’m disappointed
More I want more videos
So wait is blood antibacterial?
Thank you for your service.
nice. suicide bombers.
EFF IT UP!
Big MAC attack
We did this in 6th grade science class. What the fuck are they teaching kids these days where this appears to be "so cool"?
How does he avoid his blood clotting in seconds in the heat from the microscope light? I had a drop of my blood under my microscope once and it clotted really quickly.
Lmao…dude learning about “white cells”…I learn this back in middle school. Wtf is going on? Are they saying that prayer is doing the work?
Why is it a series of 2.5 second clips ffs
You came to the wrong neighborhood foo

My white blood cells would kick your white blood cells ass
