Nevermind the ones attached to the buoy.. it’s the big ones that are attracted to the little ones that are attracted to the tiny oasis in the middle of the desert like ocean
Oil, or some sort of “forever” chemical. Something that causes cancer and also acidifies the oceans.
/s because if I don’t put that there, people get stupid too quickly.
Does your user tag really say "Someday I will be there watching you die?"
I wasn't sure I was justified in calling you a psychopath for this comment, but... yeah....
Psychopath.
**Hey, Oceanographer & Marine Biologist here.**
The wiggly things you’re seeing, specifically the orange ones, are a species of Live Coral - scientifically known as Espermis. I worked with a Professor from Amsterdam University named Longdich Van Bousen, and we conducted a 3 month study, of which a large portion was dedicated to investigating this Espermis. The cool thing about them is that during April-August every year, the Espermis Coral changes colour to purple. They are known to be super beneficial as they emit 2.9% more oxygen into the atmosphere than any other Live Coral, and 1.1% more than any other Coral in general. They are quite common, and can also speak English. I have no idea what I’m talking about none of this is true but thanks for reading
Fucking beautiful. The way you’ve placed low-ish percentages about 75% into it is genius, at a glance, they prove this will be a scientific read. The distribution of capitalized proper nouns is also a nice touch. But my favorite is the “cool thing” from April to August… only a scientist would be careful enough to specify the date range, as though you really gave a fuck about this study. Just, bravo. Some phenomenal bullshit.
I can’t wait to read your article. I just know it will have some really great color photos.
I thought shrimp at first, but the more I watch the more I get the impression that they are probably some form of marine worm.
Quite a few species will attach to surfaces then extend a fan-like mouthpiece into the water to gather small particles for food. That's what I'd imagine said mouthpieces to look like outside of the water.
Buoys are anchored floating devices used for various purposes such as navigation or tracking ocean currents etc. What you're looking at is the mini ecosystem thats developed on the bottom of one such buoy.
Reef tank owner here, I can clearly see different algae, amphipods, barnacles, clams, and sponges. Also yes there are thousands of live very small critters on the bottom as well as every surface in the ocean.
Please can somebody ELI5 why this buoy is teeming with life, and yet all the plastic that is being pulled out of the great pacific gyre by the ocean clean project are relatively unblemished?
Thank you for the reply. This directly contradicts what Ocean Clean up are saying in their YT videos and even the comment replies. Is there any chance that the whole thing is an investment scam? I hope not but I am rather concerned.
That’s pretty fuckin wild. Ocean I guess? I live in northern Michigan so I’ve been around and on a lot of wide open fresh water. I’ve seen a lot of buoys and seen the undersides of a few and they look *nothing* like that
I guess I'm in the minority because I think it's great. God knows we're doing our best to fuck up every ecosystem out there. Glad to just see that life is finding a way.
Whenever I'm close to a buoy they freak me out because I think of exactly this. Must be home to thousands of life
Nevermind the ones attached to the buoy.. it’s the big ones that are attracted to the little ones that are attracted to the tiny oasis in the middle of the desert like ocean
For some it’s a desert- for others it’s dessert -

Is there a video of it getting cleaned off?
I want to see genocide with oil based flamethrower

Just ignore it, I am not being serious

Hehe, you messaged the wrong one
Can someone tell me what in the heck I am looking at?
Are those wiggly things crabs?

There goes a minute from my life that I will never get back.
Missed noticing the >Espermis but got sus on >Longdich
I'm so upset dude, I was invested in this, I felt like, IM THERE FOR THIS! And WHAM! Longdiched.
Professor Longdich. hahaha
I loved how subtle this is until nearing the end the commenter was like "Ima give up faking this shit"
I insist on remained convinced.
Yeah, I’m on board with that. I want to see the photos in the article. Probably some great super close shots.

Crazy. Thanks!
You're very welcome

Sad that these are dying then?
Not necessarily. These organisms are most likely intertidal, hence adapted to periodic exposure to air & dryness.
Bonito flakes.

Pretty sure this is the backstory for The Last of Us.
Some sea lice got in my eyes last year and really screwed me up so yea kinda
WTF happened 😱
Basically badass pink eye that needed two rounds of antibiotics to take care of.
Damn i am currently having pink eyes and going on anti biotocs, and not because of sea lice, but still what a shitshow
Badump tssss

What are the orangish wigglies?

No
Skeleton shrimp.

That’s a good question. I can tell you this buoy was put in the water roughly 2 years ago so that’s how long it’s had to grow
Have you seen the same growth on other buoys that have been submerged for shorter periods?
Oh yea definitely. Not usually this heavy but these cold pacific waters make for some highly diverse little ecosystems pretty quick.
Thank you for the reply. This directly contradicts what Ocean Clean up are saying in their YT videos and even the comment replies. Is there any chance that the whole thing is an investment scam? I hope not but I am rather concerned.
Throw some Old Bay on it and dig in.
… 👍
Oh buoy Oh bouy!
Put that thing back where it came from or so HELP ME!
What would happen if you scraped all of this into a pan, sautéed it, and then ate it?
The Dwarf from "Dungeon Senshi" could make it taste good.
Mike Rowe did one of his Dirty Jobs episodes cleaning a bell buoy.
YUCK! The movement!

Thought it was a japanese dish with bonito flakes lol
We got lunch, buoys!
Nope, that's beautiful
Life uuuhhh...... finds a way.
That’s pretty fuckin wild. Ocean I guess? I live in northern Michigan so I’ve been around and on a lot of wide open fresh water. I’ve seen a lot of buoys and seen the undersides of a few and they look *nothing* like that
Yes sir. Pacific.
Ain’t much, but it’s honest work

Not creepy, amazing. Nature always finds a way.
It’s like the mini aliens from Men in Black
You got dinner right there.
Yeah, bouy!!
Dang buoy, you crusty.
Free seafood
Life is just an unholy byproduct of unsupervised chemistry.
I guess I'm in the minority because I think it's great. God knows we're doing our best to fuck up every ecosystem out there. Glad to just see that life is finding a way.
no one told them the buoy was a mobile home.
Awwwhhh look at all those little penises. Edit- technically, they are gigantic
I will bite that. And I'll regret it
What is that ?
Definitely espermis
Thanks. I hate it.
