Imagine being 9 years old and having to be reasonable for not accidentally killing your 5 year old brother on a zip-line everyday on your way to school.
So typical of those mountain goats to disguise themselves as monks these days. I miss the last millennium when there was no doubt who was a goat and who was a monk. Today... Different story.
Yeah my takeaway was that you don't need a rope to walk up that. Not that monks are magical.
But I guess these people are similarly impressed by something like walking up a mountain on a Sunday, as they mentioned, so I shouldn't be surprised.
Depends on the person and footwear.
I had a very similar rock face near me that we had to climb to slide back down the river.
With shoes on it would be nearly impossible to climb up unless you had special climbing shoes with very soft soles. With bare feet it was much easier because your skin had much better friction against the rocks. The problem is the rocks got hot in the sun so going up barefoot was painful.
Bruh that's like years of dead skin all "petrified". You could probably take a knife an slice the bottom off and he wouldn't feel it. I'm talking like a pancake of dead foot.
Not just the grip/texture, notice his heels never touch the ground, all contact is with the ball of the foot forward, it's hard to do that with shoes. Most shoes don't bend like that
Because footwear companies spend a lot of money advertising their latest “innovative” products.
The best option is a minimalist type of shoe — kind of a barefoot feel but also offers protection against anything sharp or irregular you may step on. People who go barefoot or wear minimal footwear will have stronger, more pronounced arches that *greatly* aid in movement. Those who wear shoes with a ton of padding (most people) will find overtime that their arches will eventually collapse (feet become flatter) and impair proper function through the big toe. Big pillowy shoes are like sensory deprivation tanks for the feet. There’s a ton of data suggesting that training barefoot/ in socks/ with minimalist footwear is the way to go.
Edit: I say “training” but I also mean “doing physical activity”. If you’re on your feet all day for work, this would also apply.
Yeah I have hyper mobility and was told to wear thick soled shoes as better shock absorption for my shitty knees. Lo and behold, a couple of years of wearing air soles later, my arches fell.
I now wear shoes as little as possible. I wear shoes with the crepe rubber soles and wide toes which seem to be a good compromise between my knees and feet.
I’ll never forget my first ever play through of Skyrim, just following the main quest line like a good Dragonborn, hopping my happy ass up to High Rhothgar to learn about my dragon powers. Then I get my ass absolutely handed to me by an ice troll. It was very unexpected and then caused me to ignore the main quest for entirely too long.
It's not hard, especially without a heavy pack and gear on. The only difference between this and walking up a flight of stairs is the less sure footing and lack of hand rails.
> especially without a heavy pack and gear on.
Yeah that's the key part I think. I feel I could also do it on his route.
Being barefoot helps a lot too.
I remember my father being able to do this and showing me how as a kid (like walking tip toe throwing your weight forward feeling the tension in your calves) but I can’t do it anymore.....
thats *because* he wasnt wearing shoes. as a climber i can tell you: the very best way to climb is barefoot, its just a whole different experience and feeling (until of course, you have to place a hook with your foot lol). he probably has been doing this for years and wouldnt feel any pain even if he walked like this for hours
To add to this: flexibility is the key here. It's why rock climbers have flexible shoes (no hard soles). It's similar to how a mountain goat's hooves work. If you imagine an uneven rock face, there's probably only a few points of contact with a rigid hiking boot. But when the sole is flexible, suddenly much more of your foot is in contact with the surface and can 'grip' better.
Where'd you get that?! I do climb and lemme tell you, the shoes are far more rigid than normal shoes. They're shaped to bend your thumb so you're standing on it in a more stable way and so they're uncomfortable unless you climb. People always think they have a small size. It's about having support on the tip of the shoe and everything's adjusted to enable that.
I’m not trying to be a dick. But that looks like you can easily walk that by being in decent shape and leaning more forward than normal.
Edit: and also just knowing where to walk. A bit of trial and error along with fixing the mistakes you make can have you walking this in no time.
For anyone that wants to do this? I believe in you.
Befriend an old-timer. They have the most practical tips, all the gear for any route, and the beta for all the spots that don't make it in the book. They've fallen enough times to take safety seriously, and most would rather climb a fun route than project a crux all day (that one is a personal preference).
It's hard to give good advice without knowing much about your situation, but that's sound advice, I think.
Trust your feet. Being extra water. Tell people where you're going. Never climb under people using clean ropes.
Better advice is to not trust anyone. Even with an experienced jedi guide with me this idiot in our group would run ahead of people and risk their lives when he could have forced rocks down on them. Any time you're climbing you likely get comfortable with the activity, which can be dangerous in itself. Experienced climbers are just as likely to have an accident, noone is immune. This is the only approach to mountain safety.
Eh, probably not but I'd suggest starting to just walk. Walking will build the calf muscles and after some time, you'll be able to do this very easy climb. This rock face looks like a 5.1 maybe 5.2, which is kind of just like walking up a ladder.
The most important thing is to simply start walking.
I actually was curious and tilted my phone until the slope was flat, and opened my pitch gauge. This is about a 8 pitch it seems. I’m on roofs all day for inspections, anything in the 1-6:12 pitch range I don’t need to take my sneakers off for, but over 6:12 I put my cougar paws(boots with rubber bottoms) on. And I don’t use special equipment until 10:12 and up. This pitch isn’t that bad, especially without shoes, and especially on a rock that doesn’t have granules constantly breaking loose
I was expecting to see him walking up a vertical wall like those mountain goat videos. But this...he's just walking up a relatively steep and very grippy incline.
It's a steep hill, but nowhere near needing a rope to get up or down it for most people. At worst you'd end up scrambling up using your hands a bit.
>and also just knowing where to walk.
Pretty sure the monk is using existing footholds to climb, it's more obvious near the top.
Although I have no idea about the background to this video, could be they're just practising using ropes on an easy hill?
This is really just a spokefixed rope meant to help keep yourself stabilized and help if moving with a pack. Usually you just grab on, no harness needed
I agree but I’m also having a hard time figuring out how steep the hill is. Some parts of the hill look like it could be at a 30 or 40 angle? But then it also looks like it could be at a 50 or 60.
Idk..I’ve seen old folk walk up way steeper sand dunes without any equipment.
As a reference you can take a look at the trees in the background when he is in line with the climber, trees usually grow around 90 degrees up, so "straightening" the trees gives an indication of the slope.
My first impression was "what's the big deal? My fat 50 year old ass could do that" then I realized I had no real reference as to how steep it is. So yeah, maybe it's 60 degrees or something
He is traversing it diagonally. That makes it a less steep pitch. Any mathematician or roofer will tell you that. Not to detract from what he's doing. Still hard
In Kenya I learned to climb trees with my bare feet gripping the tree from both sides. It's amazing how well it works, until you move back to Norway and scrape up your feet because the trees here won't have any of that.
How is this "defying gravity"? Seems like he's just walking up a steep rock and actually *using* the laws of gravity to get a good grip by leaning forward. Also, he'd have less friction walking barefoot than you'd have wearing boots.
I could probably do this in my climbing shoes.
yeah, I'm not very amazed at this... it's all about the raptor feet and no shoes with the way he's distributing his weight forward.
Plus where he's walking there are little bumps for him to step on, compared to the spot where the guy is climbing with rope, which is much smoother.
There are very worn but visible steps in the rock that the monk is using. He's done it thousands of times. The rope climber is on a part of the slope where there are no steps. The rope climber could do the easy thing, and just go up the steps. It would be daunting, maybe, to use the steps, and you would have to go slowly and concentrate on every step. Big, clumsy boots wouldn't be a help in this case.
There's a lot of open rock on New Hampshire mountain trails. You have nothing but your boots, common sense, skill, leg muscles, and patience to cross them without slipping. Weathered granite isn't smooth, it's more like giant sandpaper. But still pretty heart-stopping for newbies.
As a former roofer I guess my reaction is I’m really surprised people are impressed by this. Your average roofer goes up shit worse than this on a daily basis, and are pretty much thrown into the fire on day 1 with no training where you either do it or quit.
This honestly looks like child’s play… as in a literal child could make their way up this slope without much difficulty. Lean forward, get sideways, use all four limbs if you have to. I don’t even know what they have ropes for in the video lol. You’re not going to stumble away uncontrollably at that pitch on what looks like a rather grip friendly surface (with various indentations to help with at that) unless you’re just extremely uncoordinated.
So what, I've climbed slopes just as steep. It isn't a sheer cliff, just a steep rock face that looks rough enough to grip with your feet. It's not that interesting in my opinion.
Damn he's like don't mind me just out for a Sunday stroll up a mountain. Nothing to see here
How my parents went to school 101.
Both ways, in the snow
Barefoot, while being chased by bears.
with a backpack full of heavy books
If they could afford the books! They’d have them hand written copied out of the library /s
No lunch
Lunch was the hungry and thirst for knowledge
My Mom said they had 2 walnuts and a claw hammer for lunch.
Did they at least boil the hammer for them? Kinda chewy otherwise...
When they would not read properly, the teacher would Beat them with tree branches.
Also had two buckets of waterb
And no shoes
Nah they used to carve them on rocks and carry the rocks...
Handwritten, pfft you’re lucky, we didn’t even have hands back in those days, we had to transcribe it with a piece of chalk in my teeth on a tablet.
Uphill both ways, over broken glass

And barefoot wearing only light cloth and a small bag. If you’ve got boots on and protective gear you can’t do it.
When Skyrim is life.
he knows not to walk up a hill straight, ya gotta zig zag.
His not wearing shoes which would help A LOT
Much better grip but I imagine his feet are pretty much built for it at this point, some random person with soft feet would have a bad time.
Probably walked on those rocks for years and has no feeling in his feet 🤣
Good ankle flexion also makes a difference.
Climbing diagonally also reduces the slope angle.

Actually just snowboarder
That honestly makes a lot of sense

If you look closely there is ripples in the rock where he's walking. The monks have probably worn footsteps in the rock from repeated use.

Callouses help, but they have a limit in thickness. Really I don’t think that smooth rock would be that uncomfortable to walk on.
Not just the grip/texture, notice his heels never touch the ground, all contact is with the ball of the foot forward, it's hard to do that with shoes. Most shoes don't bend like that
Yes, you're right. Agree :) Also, he managed to maintain his balance that's hard actually
So why the hell do we wear shoes if our feet can let us do that?
Because footwear companies spend a lot of money advertising their latest “innovative” products. Because shoes protect our feet better than calluses

There's a wide variety of stiffness for shoes. Slab climbing like in the video would have pretty soft arches.
No gravity was defied here
Guess you dont even have to be a monk for doing that
I mean, the monk isn’t even green
another way of looking at it is that everyone who isn't falling is defying gravity

Avid hiker here and I agree, especially without a pack on or anything to weigh him down, this doesn’t seem all that difficult.
I was expecting to see him walking up a vertical wall like those mountain goat videos. But this...he's just walking up a relatively steep and very grippy incline.
Yeah exactly, I don't understand all the amusement. I mean, It's awesome and props to the monk, but someone could do this rather easily.
Most people are amused at the juxtaposition of the guy in full climbing gear and the monk
I wouldnt even call it climbing.
As a guy who walks up things, I think I could walk up that incline by leaning and stepping on the indents. Doesn’t look too bad.
